1 2017 Spring Sports Information Updated Delaware NEW ATHLETE PHYSICAL FORM This form was included with the Sport Director packet. You may receive the updated form as well as the previous SODE physical when athletes update an expired physical or provide you a new physical. Both forms are acceptable. BLACKBOARD INSTRUCTIONS Blackboard instructions were provided to the Sport Directors for them to utilize to Increase and improve communications to everyone in this sport. Blackboard will allow you to send a text, and voice call all at one time to everyone who participates in your sport. Part of the expectations sheet has a contact information page that you will have everyone update so that we can have the most up to date and accurate information for communications. At the beginning of the season you will collect this information (when you are doing the Participant Expectations form) and this information will be put into the system. PARTICIPANT EXPECTATIONS 1. Insuring that everyone is informed of the expectations heading into the season. a. As a program we still see: i. Athletes and Unified Partners practicing without valid forms ii. Athletes and Unified Partners not practicing consistently, nor together, in order to be properly trained to compete iii. Volunteers and coaches not screened and certified as Class A volunteers. b. Our vision is to create a program in which athletes and Unified Partners have the opportunity to achieve their personal best by practicing together for 8-10 weeks and that all athletes, Unified Partners, volunteers and coaches are appropriately screened to ensure the safety of all involved. c. Last fall it was recommended that SODE staff create a series of expectations around athlete, coach and volunteer participation. These expectations have been approved by our Area Directors and leadership team members and have been attached. Our intent is to provide a baseline of expectation that allows our athletes, Unified Partners, coaches and volunteers to perform to the best of their ability while contributing to the best of their team. 2. These expectations are to be distributed and fully explained by the Sports Director and/or head coach prior to each sports season and typically at the first practice or meeting. 619 S. 2 2017 Spring Sports Information 2017 SPRING REGISTRATION DEADLINES 1. Spring Season timeline for Registration a. This document will show you when specific registration information will be due for the spring season. Your Registration Managers will be providing you with the Registration Forms in early April. All forms will be spreadsheets that you will type directly into and will be required to be submitted electronically. Instructions will be provided with the forms. 2. FINAL TEAM ROSTERS are due on May 8, 2017 a. ALL SPRING SPORTS will submit their final TEAM ROSTERS on May 8, By this point you should know who is participating and how your teams will break out. If someone has not attended practice by this point they will not be able to make the training requirements and should not be included on your rosters. IMPROVING ATHLETE PERFORMANCE We are a sports organization and ultimately we need to operate in such a manner that will prepare athletes to learn and perform at the best of their ability. Coaches must be willing to commit to developing themselves to ensure the success of the athletes. WEATHER RELATED PRACTICE MODIFICATIONS Coaches should anticipate extreme weather during certain times of the year. Attention should be paid to weather conditions 4-5 days prior to practice. In the event of forecasted extreme conditions that would prohibit a normal practice, coaches should determine viable alternatives such as: Indoor Training Options, Rain/Heat/Snow Date for that particular practice (Include in season schedule). Every effort should be made to conduct practices even when weather conditions are not ideal. However, in the event a practice is canceled for any reason, coaches must try to make that practice up to ensure athletes are adequately preparing for competition (8-10 weeks of training with at least one but preferably 2 practices per week). 2 Special Olympics Delaware

5 SPORTS INFORMATION FOR AQUATICS Competition Rules The Official Special Olympics Summer Sports Rules Revised Edition will govern all Special Olympics aquatics competition. As a national sports program, the United States Swimming rules for aquatics will be used. United States Swimming rules will be employed except when they conflict with the Official Special Olympics Sports rules. In such cases, the most current Official Special Olympics Summer Sports Rules will apply. General Rules: 1. An athlete with Down Syndrome who has been diagnosed with Atlanto-axial instability may not participate in the butterfly stroke and/or and any event with a diving start. 2. Coaches only allowed on the pool deck with the proper credentials Class A volunteer badge, Summer Games badge and an aquatics coaches pass (all 3). Coaches passes are very limited and will be provided by your Sport Director on a need only basis. 3. Events will be announced; if an athlete is not present at the start of an event than the athlete is disqualified. 4. An athlete may be disqualified for illegal strokes, starts and turns, and any unsportsmanlike behavior. All Events: 1. Standing on the bottom of the pool during freestyle events or the freestyle portion of the medley events will not disqualify a swimmer, unless the swimmer walks. 2. Standing on the bottom of the pool is allowed only for the purpose of resting. Walking on or jumping from the bottom will disqualify the swimmer. 3. Swimmers are not allowed to use the lines or wall to pull them forward. If they do, then that swimmer will be disqualified. 4. Swimmers must start in the water. If they start in the water then they must be holding onto the wall with at least one hand, (except in backstroke in which both hands must be holding onto the wall or starting block). 5. Swimmers must touch the wall at all turns and finish in the manner that is allowed for the given stroke they are swimming. 6. Coaches are allowed to assist the swimmers in maintaining their positions at the starting line. 7. Swimmers may be assisted from the water upon request. 8. No swimmer shall be permitted to use or wear any device that may aid his speed, buoyancy or endurance during competition (except during floatation races) such as webbed gloves, flippers, fins, etc. Goggles may be worn. 9. Starting devices may include starting system, whistle, or horn. Athletes with hearing impairments may receive hand signal starts from the starter or a designated official. It is up to the coach to inform the officials that this is required for the swimmer.

6 SPORTS INFORMATION FOR AQUATICS DEVELOPMENTAL RACES Unassisted Swims: 1. Athletes must swim the full distance with no assistance. 2. Coaches, lifeguards, officials and spectators are allowed to offer encouragement and direction to the swimmer. 3. Each athlete will be required to have an assistant of their own, to help with staging the start in the water. 4. The Coach may be in the water, but must be behind the athlete (to the start line) during the competition/race. Floatation Events (including back float): 1. Floatation devices shall be the responsibility of the athlete. 2. The floatation device must be wrap-around type so that if the athlete were too not able to hold onto the device, the device would still support the swimmer with the face out of the water. 3. These devices include vests and belts. Floatation devices such as kickboards, innertubes, or floats that wrap around the arms are not acceptable for use at any time. 4. Each athlete is responsible for having his/her own coach/assistant; this person shall be in the water with them. 5. The assistant may touch, guide or direct, but may not support or assist with the forward movement of the swimmer. COMPETITIVE RACES Relay Events: 1. There shall be four swimmers in each relay event. 2. Each swimmer shall swim one-fourth the distance of the total relay. No swimmer shall swim more than one leg of one relay. 3. A relay team that consists of swimmers of both genders shall compete as a male relay. 4. Relay members should exit the pool as soon as possible following the completion of their leg unless it will interfere with another team. If a swimmer must stay in the pool after their leg is swam then they need to be off to one side on the lane. 5. For the Medley Relay the order of the strokes are Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly and Freestyle. One swimmer of the relay team swims one stroke of the relay. If the wrong order is swum by the athletes the team is disqualified. Each stroke must be swum in accordance with its rules, including starts and turns. 6. In all relays the preceding swimmer must touch the end on the pool before the next swimmer can start. If the following swimmer starts too early than that team is disqualified. 7. Unified relays will consist of two athletes and two partners. 8. Swimmers in a Unified relay may be assigned to swim in any order. Freestyle: 1. Freestyle allows all strokes to be used, though the crawl is the most common and in most cases the fastest. Other strokes that are sometimes used in this category include sidestroke, dog paddle etc. 2. All the general rules apply to the swimmer.

7 SPORTS INFORMATION FOR AQUATICS Breaststroke: 1. The swimmer must use the Breaststroke kick with both legs working together at the same time. No flutter kick or other kick is allowed. 2. The arm stroke is to be done so that the swimmer is not pushing the water down along the long axis of their body below the shoulders except during the first stroke done under water after the start or a turn. 3. The swimmer is allowed one full pull and kick under water before their head breaks the water. 4. On each turn and the finish both hands have to touch at the same time on the wall, unless there is a physical reason for the athlete not to be able to do so, though they do not have to be at the same height on the wall. Butterfly: 1. The swimmer must use the dolphin kick, with both legs staying together. There are two kicks per arm cycle. The kick is when the hands enter the water and the other kick occurs when the hands leave the water. 2. Proper arm stroke is to be used with both arms working together at the same time. 3. Both hands must touch the wall at the same time in both turns and finishes, unless there is a physical reason that the athlete is unable to. Backstroke: 1. The swimmer may start using the starting block or hold onto the side of the pool for the start. 2. The swimmer may use any form of the backstroke to move forward. 3. The swimmer must not turn over more than 90 degrees during any part of the stroke except for the backstroke flip turn in which the swimmer may turn over onto his/her stomach and use one pull stroke before the turn. When the swimmer pushes off the wall he/she must stay on his/her back. 4. Dolphin kick may be used until the swimmer breaks the surface at which time the swimmer must continue the flutter kick. 5. At the finish the swimmer may not turn past 90 degrees until after he/she has touched the wall. Individual Medley 1. The order of the strokes in the Individual medley is Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, and Freestyle. 2. The strokes must be done in the above order or the athlete will be disqualified. 3. The athlete can not change to the next stroke until he/she has touched the wall and changed direction in the turn. 4. All rules pertaining to the individual strokes apply when that stroke is being swum.
