K-12 Adapted & Partners Aquatics : A Program For Students With and Without Disabilities Alike! Emily Fitchwell Amanda McMillen
Partner s Aquatics Program Overview What s Partner s Aquatics? Partner s Aquatics is a district wide course for students with intellectual and or physical disabilities, our Swimmers. Additionally, students without limitations join the class to be peer Partners. Partners: High school students (grades 10-12) interested in pursuing a career in education/special education, medical related fields, and students who genuinely enjoy helping others. Swimmers: Students ages 6-21 with cognitive and or physical disabilities. Partner Program Application Weekly Schedule: Mondays and Fridays: No swimmers, partners participate in a games/sports/fitness activities OR participate in group lessons to learn strategies and skills to work with individuals with various needs. Tuesdays: Elementary Autistic Support Students grades (K-3) Wednesdays: Middle School Life Skills students grades (7-8) and High School Life Skills students grades (9-12) Thursdays: Elementary life skills students grades (4-6) These students have really touched me in so many ways. One student is just so happy and is always smiling. Another student is so kind and caring, and would give you the shirt off his back, he makes you want to be the same way.
Why Partner s Aquatics? Everyone Can Swim: This is a Win-Win for ALL Students Involved For Our "Partners Swimming is F U N! Students step out of their comfort zone Learn that they can develop the skills to meet the needs of our swimmers Leadership skills The true price of leadership is the willingness to place the needs of others above your own. Great leaders truly care about those they are privileged to lead and understand that the true cost of the leadership privilege comes at the expense of self-interest. Simon Sinek Students gain self-confidence, empathy, patience, acceptance, interpersonal skills, listening skills Improving their overall Emotional Intelligence Students learn how to develop their own lesson and co-teach a swim class Partners Lesson Plan Template Students learn about different cognitive, social, and mental/emotional disabilities throughout the school year For Our Swimmers Swimming is F U N! Swimming is Therapy Students gain physical, social and emotional skills that can be applied throughout their lives Students gain self-confidence, selfmotivation and empowerment Students develop lifelong friendships Swimmers have transformed into Partners over the years Students progress through 6 swimming levels through the American Red Cross learn to Swim standards ARC Swim Levels 1-6 ARC Competency Rubric Some people may call them challenged, some may refer to them as disabled; however, I like to call them my friends. Friends who do not judge me, friends who always have a smile waiting for me when they see me, friends who like me for me
A Safe Environment Creates Trust! -We offer CPR/AED/First Aid trainings every other fall/spring for teachers and paraprofessionals. -There are 2 certified lifeguards on duty (high school students) every class. It is also important to keep your lifeguarding and CPR trainings up to date in the event that lifeguards are absent. *Training your partners CPR/AED/First Aid, how to respond if a student has a seizure or spinal injury in the water, and basic rescue techniques at the beginning of each school year is recommended. -We are lucky to have an amazing team of teachers and paraprofessionals who actively swim with their class and are stationed throughout the pool deck to monitor the students. Without their commitment and support, this program would not be possible. Teacher and Paraprofessional Responsibilities Emergency Action Plan -Swimmers progress through a life vest, floatation belt and must pass a shallow/deep end swim test in addition to the ARC learn to swim standards. If I am being honest, at first I did not know how to interact with the swimmers and I felt a bit afraid; they seemed so different than me. But, as time went on I came to realize that even though they are different, it did not really matter because we are all different in our own ways. They are teenagers just like me. We all have obstacles we have to overcome and battles to fight in life.
Basic Components to Start the Program : Equipment: Life vests, floatation belts, pool rope to divide deep end from shallow end, kick boards, swim toys Some form of assessment to monitor student progress Swim test all students who do not wear any form of floatation device Up to date Aquatic Facility and team of operators. Lifeguarding and CPR/AED Certifications highly recommended Support from School Administration and the Community at Large Communication with teachers and parents regarding medical conditions and individualized education plans Working with special education team of teachers and paraprofessionals to actively work with students while in the water Consistent mentoring of high school partner s throughout year to help build their confidence and communicate expectations to ensure the safety of all individuals in the aquatic environment Sign contract with clear expectations Clear consequences for failure to abide by contract Train partners and support staff how to work with individuals with special needs and basic swimming skills to model throughout the school year
Assessments in Adapted Aquatics Let s take a minute to look over an assessment I use with my students. Competencies How competencies are utilized for student assessment How competencies have changed American Red Cross Assessments How I use the Red Cross as my framework and then adjust my techniques as needed Assessments can be simplified and adapted to meet the needs of your students Assessment Resource:
The 5 Golden Rules of Teaching Swimming to Students with Special Needs 1. Routine : Students need a strict routine in order to feel comfortable and safe in the environment they are in. Warm-up Laps Skill Development Games & Activities Free Swim *The basic routine you create should remain the same the entire school year. High School Partner Describing Daily Routine
2. Suitable Tasks including Free Time Skills and tasks should be adapted to the individual needs of the students Short, concise instructions Breaking skills down into smaller pieces and making slow progressions in order to get it built into their muscle memory Before attempting to teach swimming via traditional strokes, it s important to make sure that each child masters basic water skills like breathing, maneuvering underwater, and flotation. These skills will not come naturally for many children, which is why a patient, consistent teaching method is best. ( MODEL, PROMPT, PRAISE, REINFORCE, MODEL AND PRAISE AGAIN!!

CUES to USE Words and phrases that help students relate or understand. Glide like a PENCIL Float like a starfish Airplane arms
CUES to USE Words or phrases that have a fun sound or rhyme Tickle, T, Touch your legs arm movement for elementary backstroke Make a Pizza, Cut it in half (math), Take a bite Arm movement for breaststroke Bend knees, Make a V, Leg movement for breaststroke (1,2,3 represents glide)
3. Parent Involvement / Community Support Engaging parents into your program is key to long term success. End of the Year Awards Day Field Trip Opportunities with elementary/middle/high school Involved with Special Olympics Events (swimming, bowling, track & field) The local swim club has also helped us fundraise for equipment.
4. Visual Aids Utilizing visual aids is vital for non-verbal communication skills. Students are better able to connect with the task they are being asked to perform and are less likely to feel frustrated and anxious.
Sample of Visual Aides FRONT GLIDE
Sample of Visual Aides Tickle- T -Touch Bend knees, Make V, Straight
5. Appropriate Partner to Swimmer Ratio Partner to Swimmer ratio should be 1:1 but no more than 3:1 to avoid distractions. Partners need to feel involved and fully engaged with the child they are working with.
Thank You! Questions and or dialog about our adaptive programs and how to improve them? I am glad I took a chance and tried something new that I never thought I would do. Little did I know that it would have such a big impact on me. One bit of advice I would give to someone is to try new things; you never know what you might get out of it!
