2 IEditoril We re more visible, but IT IS beyond dispute tht we re now much more "visible" - the Chirmn's expression. The pre-seson tour by the Swedish plyers ws in the min successful, lthough the crowds of fns did not exctly fll over themselves to wtch - hrdly surprising in August. Looking t the lrge list of mjor fixtures for the cmpign, inflted by the Olympics nd by the thirteen mtches ginst Chin, there is dnger of overkill. Those of us on the lst tour ppeled for t lest one rest dy. We hve it, but we hve ll the extr mtches. One well-known ntionl sporting gency hs lredy hinted tht they regrd such high number of mtches s."circus". The response by the fns to the forthcoming tour hs been superb. To her the crowd ror on the occsions when our plyers do well nd t the "exhibition" mtches t the end of the evening is proof tht the Chinese rtistes re fully pprecited. Hving rrnged two Chinese tours in 8 months, there is dnger tht the fns re not going to be esily ttrcted to events feturing only Europen plyers like the Leeds Msters plnned for Februry t Preston. At lest there re two breths of fresh ir for the English Top - one-dy event nd bck to points. No-one else hs to my knowledge, tken up the ll-points gmes - I think it is ded nd buried. Ftigue is one of the biggest problems for the professionl plyers on the big tours. I understnd tht Don Prker, the Englnd cptin will rigidly enforce fternoon rest periods for the Englnd squd on the Chinese tour. Otherwise, there is dnger thn the fns wtching the second hlf of the tour could be wtching some jded plyers in both tems. Ech time tble tennis is fetured on television mjor networks the boost we receive is immeditely pprent. Squeezing in three sun-drenched weeks in the Spnish sunshine fter the Swedish tour I met five different people from Britin who reclled seeing the Englnd nd Sweden mtch televised from Bletchley on August 9. No doubt our sponsors Leeds Permnent Building Society re delighted t the television exposure before the strt of the seson. And now we hve news tht the preliminry Englnd v Chin mtch t Aylesbury on October will be cnned for showing t Christms - one of the pek viewing times of the yer. If one or two more tble tennis TV trnsmissions cn be rrnged for the second hlf of the seson, we cn be sure tht new record for the cmpign will hve been set. However, the problem of stopping the decresing membership is still with us. The very first report I hve from the legues on the number of registered plyers shows smll drop, but we need mny more reports from nnul meetings t legue nd county level to ssess the sitution. 3 IThe Murice Goldstein eulogy He certinly \Ns "Mr Tble Tennis" by RABBI ANDREW GOLDSTEIN LOOKING through some ppers, I cme cross n old Tble Tennis Mgzine tht hd fine tribute to Murice Goldstein: "Who cn now remember tble tennis world in which there ws no Murice Goldstein? Since the dys of "et's whiskers", the silent cinem, nd when our gme ws still swddling, Murice hs been with us. He becme secretry of the Birminghm Legue some yers go in succession to Mrjorie Hydon (Adrin's sister, Ann's unt). And he grew up s Birminghm grew into tody's gint with between five nd six thousnd members. He ws n Engind trilist in the thirties; connected with the Interntionl Federtion; with both pre-wr nd post-wr county chmpionships; member of the Ntionl Executive nd multitude of other committees. He hs orgnised more tournments nd interntionl mtches thn ny other single person is ever likely to do. For yers Murice Goldstein hs strode quietly cross Himlyn rnge of chievement while lesser men hve gone mountinclimbing on molehills. Men hve come nd men hve gone but Murice hs gone on nd on scrificing himself to tble tennis. Lord knows how he hs done ll tht he hs done. A bt supplnted his violin bow. His golf clubs (nd hndicp) fded out. The gmes cme lmost before fmily business. He hs tired the nights with uncesing service." Tht ws written by Leslie Woollrd in 9 when In Hrrison nd Dine Rowe were Englnd No. 's (though I notice Rlph Cunnion there t No.8). If Dd hd orgnised more tournments thn nybody else in % just think of it yers lter. I'm not sure Leslie Woollrd got it right for I've been told he ws secretry of the Birminghm & District Tble Tennis Assocition in 9 - the Wrwickshire Assocition in 97 - nd member of the Ntionl Executive from 9. Fbest hour He ws mde President of the English Tble Tennis Assocition in 97 nd perhps it ws the World Chmpionships in Birminghm in 977 tht ws his finest hour. He ws rightfully given the O.B.E. the following yer. Sid Woollrd - the gme cme lmost before- fmily business. It lso cme in mny wys before his fmily - the scrifice ws his, but lso ours - prticulrly our lte mother who lso contributed so much to his success. Tonight t the Memoril Pryers I will recll some of his other chievements - his crftmnship s tilor - his crickethis dncing - the Jewish Lds Brigde - but I know tht most of you re here to honour "Mr Tble Tennis" s he becme ffectiontely known. So once gin I sk the fmily to wit while. Murice Goldstein How mny stories you could ll shre nd tell of his exploits! Mybe you could write them down nd we could do book in his honour. Like my brothers our intimte involvement with tble tennis ws some yers bck - yers of nswering your phone clls, opening the door, stmping letters, tking trys of te flights up to the office - nd clening trophies.. Lights out I select stories of silver cups in my recollection to encpsulte the mn. The first when I ws boy when the Midlnd Open ws t the Old Friends Institute in Moseley Rod. Ply hd to finish nd Pddy O'Grdy switched off the lights t 0 o'clock. We were llowed to complete the finls illeglly behind blckened windows down in the gym. At lst it ws over nd ll the clening up needed to be done - s usul just Dd nd I nd couple of other mugs! Letting ourselves out of the bck door into the drk bck streets, we wlked right into the rms of policemn. "Open your cse sir"... it ws full of silver cups! I think Dd took me home before going on to the police sttion. And of course, there they knew him well - for often they visited our home in the wee smll hours for te nd cht - for Dd ws lwys t work nd the lights ever on. And the lst episode - the dy, two months go when we found him t Blenheim Rod suffering the effects of strokes. Yet his cr ws loded with trophies. Tht morning, prtilly or lrgely incpcitted, he hd forced himself to get redy for yet nother tournment in Coventry. How he pushed himself through illness, tiredness - nd pin! Stupid t times - selfish but ever devoted to the gme he loved. How fitting tht the lst gme of tble tennis he plyed - I think - ws in Wtford to lunch the English Vets Assocition. He prtnered the lte Ivor Montgu. They lost. Ivor could hrdly see the tble let lone the bll - but Dd could still hit few. A fitting end - Ivor Montgu nd Murice Goldstein - one lst gme - now both re gone - nd the gme itself hs lost two of its founding fthers. And murice, the mn. Shy humble - honest- never seeking fvour - lwys doing fvours for others- most unsocible- nd yet when relxed the most socible of beings. Why did people keep inviting him when he rrely reciprocted? Why - even when he ws t his most mddeningdid his smile nd twinkle in his eyes win you over? Why did his nurses in his lst desperte two months, fll in love with him? How mny meetings, how mny club dinners, how mny lifts did he sk you for? How mny times did you hve to push his cr? How mny times did he give you good dvice or lend you quid or two? How mny trins did he miss, flling sleep often wking in Crewe not Birminghm? The miles he trvelled - the gmes he wtched - the legue tbles he compiled. Never stili A mn of restless energy, never still for long. In hospitl they were worried tht he didn't seem to sleep much - but we told them he never did. Holidys - in Hmmy's cottge - ment couple of nights sleep to ctch up on the previous fortnight with n hour or so night -,- then dys spent digging nd lying crzy pving nd nights doing his books. The lst thing he did in hospitl on the lst dy before he slipped into unconsciousness ws to hoover the wrd. Leslie Woollrd - yers goconcluded his rticle with: "Nture must hve frmed THIS TRIBUTE ws delivered by Murice's son Andrew t the funerl service on My 9 in Birminghm Murice to be kingpin of English tble tennis. His qulity is rre. His service nd quiet modesty unequlled. And s history stggers out of legend, he is still - bless him - with us yet." Now Murice Goldstein is no more - legend in his lifetime, clerly - but let history record the story nd the memory of mn who devoted much of his life without ever seeking rewrd - to the gme he loved. Just think of the plesure nd stisfction his orgnistion gve - to countless men nd women. Recll lso the round shoulders - the humour the smile in his eyes nd on his lips - the wrm personlity. How devstting it is to be without him - my God grnt us strength to crry on his work. It is our sdness to hve lost him - thnk God for hving known him - nd for the good influence he brought to ll our lives. 5 The Seoul Olympics tble tennis debut Crl clinched wild crd by TED WALLBUTTON, Chief Executive ETTA. CARL PREAN the Englnd Number Tble Tennis plyer from Ryde, Isle of Wight gined wild crd entry to the Seoul Olympics. 0 yers old Pren hd been in second reserve position fter nrrowly missing selection from the Europen qulifying tournment but ensured his entry by series of gint killing results. After beting World Chmpion Jing Jiling (Chin) in the Leeds Euro-Asi Tournment in Jnury he helped Englnd to silver medl in the Europen Chmpionships during Mrch. He ws the most successful plyer in Pris, beting World Number Jn Ove Wldner (Sweden) nd top Europens Andrei Mzunov (USSR) nd Erik Lindh (Sweden). A reminder Pren gve timely reminder to the Olympic selectors by beting the new Europen Chmpion Mikel Appelgren (Sweden) nd Wldner, gin, to win the ATSV Srbrucken Jubilee Tournment. The British squd for this inugurl tble tennis ppernce in the Ol} mpics comprises English plyers with Pren joining Desmond Dougls, Aln Cooke nd Skylet Andrew in Seoul. Editor's note: In fct, to put it bluntly, it ppers tht Crl Pren plyed so well.fter the Krlsrue Olympic trils tht the ITTF hd little option but include him in the Seoul prty. CARL PREAN, Isle of Wight our professionl for Srbrucken in the Bundeslign West Germny. Seoul reporting restricted REPORTING world-clss tble tennis from brod this seson will include the world chmpionships in Dortmund, West Germny for the regulr trio of Richrd Eton (The Times, etc), John Woodford (Dily Telegrph) nd Johnny Lech (News of the World). But the Times nd Telegrph reporters did NOT operte from Seoul. There re severl resons for this - one is tht every sports journlists wnts to be there; the plces re llocted very crefully. Both Richrd nd I were offered plces but for me the prices were sky-high nd for Richrd, his wife Anne is expectin~ the birth of his second child during the Olympics. ~o it is nticipted tht the tble tennis news from Seoul will rech the British Press vi the Reuter gency nd other interntionl gencies. For this mgzine, I hve no doubt tht chirmn John Pren will be working hrd t his typewriter when he gets bck from Seoul to give us more detiled version of tble tennis's Olympic debut. JW. DESMOND DOUGLAS crried the British flg furthest in Seoul. After six wins in row he lost to Erik Lindh nd Jing Jiling, just filing to rech the lst eight. Aln-Cooke won five. in row but lost to Tibor Klmpr. (cnt from next col) dding to their collection of trophies. The Men's Singles title went to Mrk Rndle fter -, - defet of tem mte Andy Withers but Gry Lewsey of the Midlnd surprised some before going out in the semi-finls to Withers. The closest finl of the evening proved to be the ldies where Sndr Roden repeted her erlier defet of Suznne Airey fter sving mtch point in the second gme to give the Ntionl Westminster nd Wles its first title. Both Doubles titles went to Brclys with Rndle nd Withers defeting Dvies nd Hndshw in the Men's event nd Helen Brdwell piring with Andy Withers to defet Geoff Dvies nd Kim Mudge in the Mixed Doubles. BARCLAYS AND MARK RANDLE ON FORM by Gordon Bker THE first Interntionl Tble Tennis Chmpionships for employees of institutions offering bnking services were promoted by the Isle of mn Tble Tennis Assocition nd held in Dougls from - My. The lte withdrwl of tems from Mlt nd the Isle of Mn somewht reduced the Interntionl flvour but the remining tems from Englnd, Wles nd Irelnd provided fiercely contested tournment which, undoubtedly will develop in future yers. The Tem Chmpionship, plyed on the Europen Legue formt of men nd womn, proved rther strenuous with 7 sessions of ply over two dys but produced some very tight mtches, prticulrly t the crossover stge, nd some surprises. Roy Copes from the Northern Bnk of Irelnd showed, in the very first session, no respecter of personlities by inflicting rre defet upon Mrk Rndle of Brclys Bnk whilst Sndr Roden representing the Ntionl Westminster Bnk (Wles) indicted her intentions with first session defet of Suznne Airey of the Midlnd Bnk nd continued in the second session with convincing defet of Helen Brdwell of Brclys. Also t this stge Grhm Prr nd Pul Rushton of Ntionl Westminster (Englnd) produced very good doubles win over the experienced pir of Geoff Dvies nd Chris Hndshw from Lloyds Bnk whilst on n djcent tble Sndr Roden nd In Ldbrooke inflicted the only defet on Andy Withers nd Helen Brdwell of Brclys. After the group mtches nd the first cross-over gmes, s expected Brclys nd Lloyds emerged to contest the first two plces. Geoff Dvies opened Lloyds ccount with good win over Mrk Rndle but Andy Withers levelled the scores with convincing defet of Chris Hndshw. In the criticl ldies singles Helen Brdwell produced n outstnding disply of ttcking Tble Tennis to defet Kim Mudge nd set Brclys on the wy to the title with finl - scoreline. The finl four tem plces were filled by Midlnd B, Leeds Permnent A, Leeds Permnent B nd the Provincil Finncil Trust. The finl dy of the event sw some tremendous bttles for the Individul titles nd Brcly;; (cnt in previous col)

6 Europen Youth Chmpionships, Now Sd Five bronze medls for Englnd by PAUL ELPHICK in Novi Sd NOVI SAD, YUGOSALAVIA ws the choice for the st Europen Youth Chmpionships held over the period 0 July -7 August. Englnd's honours in sering het were bronze medls won by the Junior Boys Tem, Brdley Billington, Mtthew Syed, Michel 0' Driscoll nd Chris Oldfield nd by Cornwll's top Englnd Cdet,.Neil Bevn in the Cdet Boys Singles. JUNIOR BOYS TEAM EVENT Englnds second stge drw could not hve been better pired with Polnd nd the Netherlnds - or it would pper so! Hollnd desptched Polnd to the tune of. nd Englnd then thrshed the Poles -0, so it ws shoot out between Englnd nd Hollnd for semi-finl spot ginst the powerful top seeded Soviet Union. Englnd strted splendidly Mike defeting the Dutch no Dnny Heister -7, -, but then Mtt suffered his first defet t the hnds of Brt VnHren, the top Dutch plyer, nd 8. Englnd fell - behind when Brd lost to Trinko Keen nd it ws left to Mtt to stedy the ship with comfortble two stright victory over Heister. So Englnd hd t lest bronze medl nd semi finl tilt t the holders Soviet Union but the schedule probbly denied Englnd of better coloured medl. At 8.0m next morning the three Englnd heroes of the night before were bck on the tble for their tough semi finl. Most of the lds hd only hd bout hours sleep certinly not enough before Europen semi finl - not only were they physiclly exhusted but lso mentlly too, nd it definitely showed t the strt of the Soviet mtch. After the first mtches Englnd hd won 'just the sets, ~J<ld tking Dmitrij Mzunov to in the third nd Mtt losing out t 7 in the third to the sme plyer. The whole Englnd bench lept from their sets to cclim memorble point but Vrdnin found some incredible shots to sntch it from Mtt t -0 leving the finl mtch score t - to the Soviets. A bronze medl ws rel credit to the tem fter the disstrous showing the yer before in Athens. JUNIOR GIRLS TEAM EVENT Englnd hd only mtches in their opening group fter the withdrwl of Portugl. Englnd hd to ply Norwy nd the Soviet Union. Englnd defeted Norwy - to qulify for the second stge with Andre Holt winning both her singles with comprtive ese. The only blemish on the scoresheet crne when Julie Billington lost - - to the Norwegin no Mrinne Blikken. The second mtch ginst the Soviets would determine who would qulify s group winners. The Soviets hd brought n unknown quntity in Veronik Krestininov, chopper, who duly defeted Julie nd. Andre levelled the scores when defeting Armine Mkinjn 7, 0. The doubles proved to be decisive the Soviet piring winning nd. Andre then plyed Krestininov, won the first 8 held mtch points through deuce in the nd, lost it nd fell prt in the rd. 7 Ping Pong Corner Continuing the. sg of the denigrtion of our Olympic sport by clling it "ping-pong"... Crmet Botin, Severino Bllesteros's fincee hs spoken out on his hte of losing t sport. Ping-pong is bd enough but the prefix "just" mkes such sttement even more nnoying to the point it would be nice to be ble to sy to these people "Are you wre tht tble tennis is n Olympic sport?". SURELY it is time on this forthcoming Chinese tour of Englnd to try nd get the BBC TV sports producers to remke the fmous "00 Gret Sporting Moments" of tble tennis tken t Brighton in the mtch between Teng Yi nd Li Chenshi. It ws shown gin on July 8 t prime time just following the British Open Golf finl round. I ws courtside on tht occsion long with mny reders of the mgzine. 8 IChirmn John Pren sys The progress continues "I READ more bout Tble Tennis during this summer," wrote friend, "thn I used to ll seson." Certinly we hve remined more visible thn in the pst. The Englnd-Sweden mtches in August gve us good strt s we prepre for the new seson. It ws good to present the Europen Chmpions nd our own top plyers in Swindon nd Andover- possibly the first interntionls plyed there. Milton Keynes is no strnger to top clss tble tennis. A splendid collbortion hs emerged with the locl Council which s brough much fine tble tennis to the community nd the spot hs benefitted s result of some rousing promotions. The first mtch ws televised on BBC Grndstnd getting two good uninterrupted sports of bout one hour in totl with much good ply. Ironiclly, we gin lost '- just s in Pris. This time we pulled bck from 0- to - nd we hd every chnce to win the remining two mtches. So it ws gin rther exciting with Tble Tennis s the undoubted winner fter very good evening. We plyed the remining two mtches on two tbles, in prt to give the plyers some useful pre-olympic prctice, but minly to introduce our own specttors to two-tble ply which is the wy ll Germn Legue mtches re 'plyed, often to very good crowds which we would love to hve here rther more often. There is lwys something going on nd, whilst they re knocking up on the other tble or picking up the bll, you cn wtch the other. Hving seen number of Bundeslig Mtches, I must confess I found their formt enthrlling - fter the initil cclimtistion to something quite different. The Swedes proved yet gin mgnificent tem, even without Wldner who hd to sty t home with suspected glndulr fever. Appelgren nd Lindh were frequently quite brethtking. Des plyed s well s ever nd the younger plyers plyed better nd better s the tour progressed. The Olympics hve brough well deserved nd much needed recognition to the sport nd together with this erly Swedish Tour we hd good spots on Television lmost dily, t ny rte in the South, feturing our 'plyers. TV AM crried good item nd News Progrmmes lso showed some interest. I recll one highly encourging period when we ppered for seven successive dys in one shpe or nother or something went into the cn for future use. Soon fter you red this the Englnd - Chin mtches will begin. Demnd nd interest ws remrkble. Tht is why more thn dozen mtches will be stged. It will be n excellent Chinese Tem. If we cn get few good results, we shll be ner our mbition of world clss tem. When you red this, the Tble Tennis prt of the Olympics will hve ended. I hope it will ll work out well nd give the whole sport ll over the world the lift it needs. I hope prticulrly tht more of the world's plyers will prticipte next time, thn men nd 8 women, which is our megre rtion in Seoul. President Ogimur nd his tem will be bttling for tht objective during the preprtions for Brcelon. lhope we shll see tem event which is so much of tble tennis trdition. Unfir We got the mximum number of permitted men to Seoul vi the qulifying stges, but sdly no women nd this ws blow to us, which we must rectify in time for Brcelon. Perhps by then Europe will hve evolved better qulifying process thn we hd lst time. This seemed to combine high expense with unfirness, sitution Sebstin Coe will find fmilir. The lloction of plces itself ws unfir to Europe, where, for ll the undoubted excellence,of the top Asin countries, greter depth of excellence exists thn nywhere else. However, Olympic Tble Tennis is in n erly stge. It cn only go from strength 0 strength. The higher profile nd the incresing opportunities to see top clss tble tennis live nd on TV will in time encourge more to tke up the gme in competition ginst very mny other sports nd declining numbers in some importnt ge groups. Incresed membership remins No. priority. Our finncil sitution hs continued to improve. The turn-round hs been remrkble nd in some wys spectculr. Tht hrd decisions hd to be mde cnnot be in doubt. The mjority of our members supported wht hd to be done nd the success to which we cn now point is theirs more thn ours. Sg ending Thesg ofour crumbling offices is due to end this utumn when our hedqurters will move to reltively modern building in Hstings nd prticulrly fter the former offices re repired under our obligtions in the lese. We erned enough money lst yer to cover the costs which will be in excess of 0,000 - probbly more. When this is over, it will signl more firmly the rrivl of better dys.. Eric Lindh No report of such generlly encourging trends cn be complete' without once gin pying tribute to the support of the Leeds Permnent Building Society, not just finncil, but morl, s well s in mrketing mtters. They hve been tremendous. I hve done gret del of trvelling during the summer, visiting our members, renewing old friendships nd beginning new ones. I hve been impressed by the number of locl inititives, too numerous to mention here. Perhps Ron Applegte's coching scheme in Norwich with 0 youngsters does deserve specil mention. I know Donld Prker ws impressed nd delighted by this coching inititive. It shows wht cn be done. All over the country I hve found morle high nd enthusism greter. All over the country the sport is held in much higher regrd thn it ws yer or two go. Tht is good bse on which to build. Hve relly good seson. 9 IThe ETIA Annul Meeting Clm Wters t Chring Cross by TED WALLBUTTON, Chief Executive, ETTA COMPARED with the 987 Annul Generl Meeting, hedlined by John Woodford s 'Pren Tem Dodge the Bullets', the 988 meeting ws much more controlled nd clm ffir. Sme venue, mostly the sme fces, but politics gve wy to sport nd tble tennis ws even mentioned on few occsions. Sturdy 9 July t the Chring Cross Hotel the sport took good step forwrd to progessive unity. The 00 members present stood for moment's silence in memory of the lte President, Murice Goldstein BE, whose quiet presence hd controlled mny previous AGM's, then the Agend commenced with mtters rising from his lst such meeting. As ever, the report of the Mngement Committee gve gret del of opportunity for reviewing one of the most trumtic yers ever experienced in the ETTA's long nd chequered history. Mrs Jose Rnsome rised ple under the Development Deprtment report for urgent steps to be tken to bring more women into Tble Tennis nd invited ll interested members to ttend specil Women in Sport Seminr during August. John Jermyn (North Herts) echoed the overll sentiment by regretting the derth of informtion from the Membership Committee, but ws ssured by the Chirmn tht severl good ides hd been generted by the committee which were in the process of being ctioned. The vitl nd pivotl sponsorship of the sport by Leeds Permnent Building Society ws prised by Eric Hill of Yorkshire who mde the point tht the Leeds County Chmpionships ppered to be lgging finncilly behind the Leeds British Legue in support terms. The Chief Executive ssured him tht both bodies were regrded s being of equl, nd prime importnce nd the differing sponsorship sums reflected the fct tht the County Chmpionships did not py prize money. The review of performnce gve the opportunity for Peter Chrters (Reding) to congrtulte the Englnd Tem on their Silver Medl in the Europen Chmpionships, lthough he felt tht the Bronze Medl in the 98 World Chmpionships ws of equl merit. Ken Muhr (Milton Keynes) thought tht the number of student coches nd interest in coching ws flling nd ppeled for the reintroduction of Ntionl Coches but Sturt Sneyd (Vice Chirmn Coching nd Selection) refuted the rgument nd mintined tht the new coching structure ws proving highly cost effective. Points were mde, nd re-mde, but the Mngement Committee Report ws unnimously dopted. More peceful The Tresurer's report ws certinly given more peceful reception thn its predecessor, not surprisingly s he ws ble to report smll surplus for the yer s opposed to the mssive losses of 9/87. The proposition considered ws put on behlf of Ntionl Council nd ws intended to mke it permissble for one person to mnge two of the ETTA's deprtment. Under the current rules vcnt deprtment hs to be mnged by the Chirmn if he is unble to find suitble or cceptble Vice Chirmn to fill the post nd he explined to the SGM the difficulties nd hindernces inhernt in this. 11 IThe Leeds ntionl tem winners PLYMOUTH WOLVERHAMPTON PRESTON NOTTINGHAM Video - wonderful coching tool by DONALD PARKER, the Englnd cptin THE video cmer is n excellent coching id nd cn be used in mny different wys. In the prctise sitution it cn visully reinforce the coches verbl feedbck. Wht plyer thinks he is doing nd wht he is ctully doing cn be totlly different. To be ble to show this is of immense vlue nd lso to be ble to show subsequent development helps the grooving in of good technique. With the Englnd tem I hve found the best use is in the mtch sitution. Firstly, plyers cn wtch themselves ply nd see whether they plyed good tcticl gme, whether t ny time they took the pressure off, whether they plyed ny poor strokes nd whether indeed they behved in sportsmnlike mnner. Obviously there re other fcets of the gme tht cn be wtched, but prior to big mtch I hve found some plyers cn be helped psychologiclly nd tcticlly by being ble to wtch their lst encounters with their prospective opponents. Secondly I m ble to edit tpes nd the plyers cn hve copy of their mtches in whtever foreign tournment. Obviously in my position s Tem Mnger/Coch I m very dependnt on the Englnd plyers personl coches s it is vitl tht we ll work long the sme lines. The plyers' coches nd the plyers themselves wtch the videos nd I cn then discuss with them wht they hve seen nd we cn mutully gree on progrmme of prctise nd trining. Thirdly, during the tem event t the Worlds or Europens, we my hve to ply tem with whom we re not too fmilir. Tem events re plyed t the sme time nd therefore plyers re unble to observe their future opponents. With the video cmer we simply film one of their mtches nd wtch it in the evening while hving tcticl discussion t the sme time. This hs indeed proved to be gret help prticulrly for observing service techniques. Fourthly we obviously use the tpes on trining cmps so tht prospective Englnd plyers cn see the demnds of top level interntionl ply. Finlly, we do mke these tpes vilble to enthusists t very low cost. The first ttempt t this ws not s successful s current ttempts s lessons hve been lernt. A top qulity mster tpe is used, second genertion tpes only re sent out to purchsers nd the cmer is not on "Auto Focus" which cused "blurring". As the gme ws on first the erly editions of the ntions hd nothing to write bout except the Cooke defet, but tht is the wy the Cookey crumbles! However, by the time the tems reched Andover, tiredness ws pprent, Jorgn Persson pulled out with blistered toe nd Englnd were clerly in with chnce, lthough Persson did not impress throughout the two mtches t Bletchley nd Swindon. Pren nd Cooke both hd difficulties finding their best shots in the first two clshes lthough Cooke bet Persson. It ws t Andover ll cme right - Cooke fought like demon t the tble nd t the bck of the court to stop Mikel Appelgren whilst Pren hd n stonishing scoreline to topple Lindh's unbeten record 0,0,0! Tht one hd chirmn John Pren riveted to the scene, lthough he did not pper to be "bubbling like n electric kettle" s reported in the Sundy Times (Richrd Eton) tht dy! Dougls lost to Lindh, but in the very lst mtch of the dy, our wondermn from Wlsll, finlly demolished Appelgren - Dougls hd my vote for Mn of the Tour for Englnd, Erik Lindh for Sweden. NEW BOND There is no doubt tht the tour hs helped to cement strong bond between tble tennis plyers nd the ssocitions of Englnd nd Sweden. This sitution hs been helped by the fct tht the Swedes see the Englnd men's top trio s the strongest for 0 yers, so ny mtches between Englnd nd Sweden provide the best possible mtch-ply prctice for ll the plyers. Englnd, Sweden Bletchley Desmond Dougls, Nicky Mson nd Aln Cooke ll scored once for Englnd in the opening mtch of the tour nd it ws Dougls who cme within two points of forcing drw in the finl mtch of the night, losing -9 in the third gme to Mikel Appelgren. The mtch finished t p.m. too lte for most of the ntionl press to crry the result. Nicky Mson who gined plce in the Englnd tour prty in the bsence of Skylet Andrew in Chin, opened his ccount losing to Erik Lindh, but in the second hlf Mson displyed his fighting spirit with gret victory over the young John Fllby -9, -9, helping to put Englnd bck to -, fter Sweden hd gined -0 led. Aln Cooke who hd erlier lost to Fllby, returned to the tble to overturn the 9 Europen chmpion Jorgen Persson in rel thriller. Crl Pren, hours before his st birthdy showed flshes of brillince, but t no time did he seem likely to sweep the floor with the Swedes s he did in Pris t the Europen Chmpionships..Summing up the mtch, the Englnd plyers bsiclly struggled in the erly stges nd cme bck smrtly in the middle of the evening, but could not quite hold the dvntge long enough to hold the Swedes to even scores t the end. 14 ICentre of Excellence Hed Coch A coch who mkes chmpions By JOHN WOODFORD HANS SOOVA, the highly respected Yorkshire coch who cme to Englnd in 9 from Estoni is the mn most likely to produce the next English Europen junior chmpion, junior or senior - tht is the view of mny in Yorkshire. His record is exceptionl. He hs coched plyers who hve plyed for Englnd nd I m told hve reched No. spots on English rnking lists, 8 hve become ntionl chmpions. Hns is hed coch t the Yorkshire nd Humberside Centre of Excellence t Frnley Prk High School, Leeds. He sid recently "t the centre I hve superb tem of workers including coch Sylvi Brodbent - everything depends on tem work" he dded. "Young tble tennis plyers these dys hve mny more nd better fcilities thn when I first strted fter coming to Englnd in 9" he sid, "sponsorship is very much better t ll levels but the young plyers re nowhere ner s dedided s they were fifteen yers go". Windows Hns plyed tble tennis in Brdford for fifteen yers before he becme coch in 97. In the erly dys he wtched people plying tble tennis through the windows t Brdford YMCA before be plucked up the courge to tke prt. Once he strted to get involved he lernt English very quickly. Refugee IJrior to rriving in Englnd he ws refugee being moved from cmp to cmp by the interntionl refugee orgnistions where he mde his first bt from wood out of Red Cross prcel! Hving mde his first bt, he pinted it blck nd the pint never dried - bt with n unusul grip! In those fr off.dys he never plyed with new bll. He picked up the crcked ones nd used sticky tpe to ptch them up! So much for our modem plyers pinfully sorting their wy through boxes of perfect blls before mtch. When he took tble tennis lessons in Germny before coming to Englnd the price ws one cigrette for ten minutes nd two cigrettes for hlf n hour. How times hve ch,mge.d. Hns comments "I hve spent so mny hours plying nd coching tble tennis, but it is the sport I love nd it hs been good to me." Csul Amongst group of young Yorkshire plyers in the top brnches of the Englnd junior nd cdet rnkings re two strs to wtch - Michel O'Driscoll nd Chris Oldfield. O'Driscoll from Mirfield ws the plyer with his delightfully csul style who shocked his two top rivls Brdley Billington nd Mtthew Syed into defet to win the Leeds Junior English Open t Bridlington in My - O'Driscoll I suspect hs lernt lot from Hns Soov. Editor's note: "Tble Tennis News" is indebted to the "Yorkshire Evening Post" for some help with this story which took up hlf pge in tht newspper one evening lst June. Hed *Coch t Leeds - Hns Soov,000 fns for Chin tour RECORDS will certinly be broken when the -mtch tour by Chin strts before the BBC television cmers t Aylesbury Civic Centre on October. Six dys lter the show tkes to the rod for wht cn only be gruelling mtches in thirteen dys strting t Newcstle nd finishing t Hlifx on November. The twelve centres to be visited re Newcstle, Bridlington, Mnchester, Birminghm, Brentwood, Ipswich, Estleigh, Folkestone, Estbourne, Weston-super-Mre, Hinckley nd Hlifx. Reports from the venues suggest tht some my ttrct crowds of,000 fns - Folkestone who hve the dvntge of professionl orgniser - re expecting tht number nd re flying the tems from Estleigh erly on the morning of October 0, to Lydd irport in Kent. The Englnd tem is expected to be t fullcstrength with the Olympic four - Desmond Dougls, Aln Cooke, Crl Pren, Skylet Andrew, with the possibility of Nicky Mson nd other top Englnd plyers getting gme. Chin will hve (of course) s their leder nd plying cptin Chen Xinhu, now resident in Mnchester, plus the world No.7 Wng Ho nd the current mixed doubles world chmpion Hui Jun. As TIN went to press, it ws not known who will be in the Chin No. berth. POSTAL STRIKE THE postl strike nd its bckwsh hs hindered the production of this first issue of TIN, printed for the first time by BELMONT PRESS of Northmpton, whose co-opertion hs been first clss. In ddition to the strike nd the new printer, three of the Hstings stff nd myself grbbed. the "slot" opportunity fter the Swedish tour to tke holi-. dys in Spin - so four resons why our new publiction dte of the list of the month ws n lmost impossible trget to hit. I regret tht the record mount of dvertising nd the post strike hs cused number of contributions to be omitted - Jw.

15 British Legue Promoted by the English Tble Tennis Assocition Ormesby cpture Chen Xinhu by MIKE LOVEDER NEW Premier Division chllengers Ashford my hve filed in their bid to recruit Aln Cooke (who is rumoured to hve price tg of 00 per mtch), but they now hve four top 0 stndrd men hving succeeded in recruiting Dve Hnnh nd Nicky Mson. Aln Cooke left Ormesby to ply in Sweden bck in 9 to replce the then World Chmpion Stelln Bengtsson t Flkenberg. Ormesby hve since seen considerble turnover in No plyers. In 9/87 they signed up John Hilton. On his deprture they gined Scotlnd's Dve Hnnh nd this seson they re reported to hve chieved wht is possibly their best signing to dte in the form of the tlented Chinmn Chen Xinhu. It seemed therefore little ironic tht one of the seson's first fixtures ws to be Ormesby vs Ashford, but I'm told tht this hs been postponed until Februry. Dougls retined Des Dougls left Borussi Dusseldorf in 98/8 fter 7 yers there. Since then he hs spent two yers with GKN nd is now expected to sign up for second ses<;m with Bthwick Tyres, with Kevin Stchell promoted to No in the tem. The trnsfer of Nicky mson from Bth to Ashford could mke the Avon tem hve to work hrder thn expected to retin the Legue chmpionship. Grove I hve retined their top two plyers for third seson. Jimmy Stokes nd John Souter my well be plesed tht the trnsfer mrket hs been busy nd they my see themselves sneking wy with the title, hving been the runners-up for the lst two sesons. Support from Brdley Billington nd Sen Gibson mkes this one of the youngest fittest tems. It does seem to me tht the title chse my well be closer this seson nd there could be few drws in prospect to keep things interesting to the end. Ashford werescheduled to entertin Bth on 8 September. Now I her tht this fixture will be plyed on Jnury 989 to see sprkling strt to the New Yer. Following the withdrwl of Rotherhm from the Premier, Tony Tylor is reported to hve signed for Butterfly Crdiff, to replce Nigel Tyler nd to tem up with Crl Morgn. So the ccents will not sound quite so Welsh in future! Cndidtes Three tems I see s relegtion cndidtes t present re Armd 00, Chn Construction nd Kingfisher Reding I (in lphbeticl order!) Kingfisher Reding do not yet look like Premier tem lthough I'm told they re still recruiting. Nevertheless they could survive nother seson BLAST FROM THE PAST The newly-formed Division I South is shping up into tough re. Promotees C&L RUislip look like fvourites if they cn hold their tem together. At the time of writing they hve Nigel Tyler, Andy Cunninghm, John Tylor nd Tony Strk. However it won't be esy if Dgenhm FC hve their wy - now they ARE tht minty bit stronger. In 98 Dve Wells ws No for Ellenbro' in the Premier. I gther he hs now returned from Hollnd nd, hving previously been mong the top in the country, it should not tke him very long to repper in our ntionl rnkings. Another blst from the pst comes to TSP Lrkhll who hve signed up Mlcolm Sugden who I thought hd premturely retired from competitive ply. They seem to hve lost the unpredictble Ru Bole nd I her Percy Collino is getting itchy feet. Ifhe trnsfers to Rejects I s rumoured it will hve the effect of pushing Gry Spencer down to No in the tem under the new rules. Mybe he'll enter the occsionl tournment to get rnked higher! Tem Rmlos Essex hve their Mx Crimmins regulr squd rernked nd look likely to hve their work cut out this seson. Doleq Crpets, with two promotions in s mny yers, hve recruited Mike Owens but they won't be quite the sme without Brin Jenes. Plymouth Bulldogs look solid nd they hve gined the tlents of Gry Lmbert t No. Horshm Dolphins lose Steve Hollowy but hve helthy squd to chllenge for the title honours. The north Division I North looks like one-horse rce from the registrtions seen so fr. Grove II could win this division brely rising swet! it does pper tht the min bttle is likely to be for the runner-up spot. Britnni Ipswich, City of Leeds nd MBS St Neots ll seem to be in with chnce lthough the outstnding registrtions could revel gret del. Brdford Investments Unity hd good squd lst seson nd nother of similr strength could overturn most tems in this division. Grove II's strs could I suppose be forced to 'ply up' in the event of ny Grove I injuries nd in this, perhps unlikely, event the division could be opened up. Mike Loveder With Alison Gordon, Mx Crimmins, Joey Kennedy nd Kenny Jckson, Ashford II look set to run wv with Division II South. Mo;e bout this nd other tems in the November issue. The Plyer of the Month wrds, introduced in 98, live on. Wtch this spce for 'Strs on Sundys'! Dvid Hnnh DAVID HANNAH, the undisputed Scottish chmpion lives in Surrey. Under new Scottish regultions he now hs to trvel to Scotlnd more frequently to ply in the mjor Scottish TTA events. STOP PRESS: Hnnh ws seriously injured plying footbll in September is out of ll sport until Christms! Schildkrt distributed by Butterfly

17 IThe Leeds County Chmpionships More tems thn ever! THE number of tems continue to increse. There re 0 more in the 988/9 progrmme, bringing the totl to 7! It is helthy sign tht the Junior Section is now the lrgest with 0 tems. Lively discussion ensued t the Chmpionships Conference concerning Avon's proposl tht ll mtches be plyed in weekend sessions. It roused keen interest nd received good mesure of support. Associtions were pprehensive of costs which might be involved nd there ws concern t the prospect of rrnging suitble nd conveniently situted venues to provide for the Divisions. The outcome of vote did not bring bout chnge of Rule. But obviously there is more interest in plying over weekends t centrl venues. Since Conference some Associtions hve been exploring such possibilities for the coming seson. John Pren,Ted Wllbutton nd myself encourged Counties to give more publicity to improve the imge of the Chmpionships nd secure more coverge for the sponsors. Ted Wllbutton will be gld to receive copies of Press cuttings. Conference greed re-numbering of Divisions so tht First Divisions follow those of Premier sttus. 18 IEnglnd Junior Top The Andre Holt ht-trick by MIKE WATTS FOR the third successive yer, Andre Holt of Lncshire ws the overll winner of the Junior Girls section of the Junior Top on April - t the Stntonbury Leisure Centre nd sponsored by the Borough of Milton Keynes. In the Junior Girls, everything hinged on the mtch between Andre nd Julie Billington (Derbyshire) who is now bck to something like her old form fter missing most of the previous seson with wrist injury. Julie won the first gme nd led 0-8 in the second win here would hve given her the title. Andre however fought bck mgnificently to level the mtch nd then took the third. Erlier Julie hd lso ruined the title spirtions of both Clire Potts (Cheshire) nd Debbie Toole (Yorkshire). Andre finished unbeten hving hd to chnge her rubber when the Lentec 'Swing' ws bnned t the Europen Chmpionships in Pris. Fvourite In the corresponding Boys event, Michel O'Driscoll (Yorkshire) strted fvourite in the bsence of Brdley Billington (in Belgium) nd Mtthew Syed. He did win the event, but ws given scre lte on when, fter winning his first nine gmes, he first lost to Neil Bevn (Cornwll) nd then to Thoms Cutler (Middlesex) to leve him level with Neil Pickrd (Norfolk) but winner on the fct tht he bet Pickrd. Pickrd himself ws involved in n mzing gme with Adrin Thorp (Stffordshire) in Round 7. The pressure The first gme ws won comfortbly by Pickrd who then relly turned on the pressure to led -0 nd then -. Thorpe to his credit ws not prepred to give up nd begn tremendous fight bck which finlly sw him level t 9 ll, nd then mzingly tke the next two points to bring off remrkble win. Unfortuntely for Thorpe, there ws not to be 'firytle' ending s Pickrd won close third gme nd Thorpe finlly hd to settle for th plce. Unbeten Irin Milehm (Kent) ws n unbeten winner of Cdet Boys with ten stright wins lthough he ws tken to 'deuce' in the third on two occsions on the second dy. He finished with two gmes to spre over second plced Mrtin Adms (Berkshire). Ktie Goodll (Yorkshire) won the Cdet Girls with only one loss but the surprise pckge ws yer old. Slly Mrling (Yorkshire) who finished second. Another yer old Nicol Deton strted brightly defeting top seed Helen Wright (Devon) in Round. This defet ws to prove costly for Miss Wright. With 9 rounds gone she ws level with Miss Goodll but then lost two stright to Miss Goodll nd Helen Potts to drop bck into th plce. Controversy lsefore the tournment strted there ws considerble controversy when two plyers Ellen Meddings (Yorkshire) nd Gry Knights (Derbyshire) were told by Referee Len Pilditch tht they could not ply with Lentec rubbers. Knights immeditely withdrew from the Cdet event but fortuntely there ws vcncy in the Junior Boys nd luckily Knights ws the next on the list so he competed t tht level. Miss Meddings continued in the Junior Girls nd, whilst she strted bdly, improved s the tournment went on to finish with wins. Our once ll conquering Veterns hve lso unccountbly slipped out of the top flight nd both these tems will figure in the new Division ctegory. Phyllis Luder is still in chrge of the Vets but new leder hs emerged to tke over the ~ Seniors, nmely Bill Wdling of Chelmsford, bck on the Mngement Committee fter too long wy. Bill ws Generl Secretry of the County soon fter I strted with the Juniors nd in 98 won the coveted Corti Woodcock Memoril Awrd. If nybody cn revive the flgging fortunes of our Seniors, Bill is tht person. At our AGM in My we lso welcomed bck Ron Mckenzie, former Senior Mtch Secretry, now Press nd Publicity Officer. Ron nd I hve discussed the mtter of this column nd it ws decided tht I should continue. Our Junior Squd hs the unfortunte distinction of being the sole representtives of the County in Premier Division. We re hoping to improve on lst seson's th spot nd to present chllenge to Yorkshire. With Grnt Solder, Dmin Hollnd nd Alison Gower still vilble, Lind Rdford to come in, nd choice between Alln Rdford, Steven Rnd, nd possibly Keith Buers for the No. boy position, we should hve resonbly strong line-up. Congrtultions re definitely due to Grnt Solder, firstly for rising to No. in the August Rnking List, nd secondly for being voted Essex Plyer of the yer nd receiving the Hrry Wlker Memoril Awrd. I should dd tht this Trophy is won on the votes of the plyers in the County nd for yer old to win it shows in wht esteem Grnt IS held. Cliff nd Lind Solder, his prents, hve shown wht sensible people they re by turning the trophy into drinks try. Wht shme it will only be in the Solder household until My 989! On September rd/th we re holding Junior Rnking Trils t our Hedqurters, Peniel Acdemy, in Brentwood. Hopefully some new strs will emerge. I m very plesed to welcome onto our Junior Sub-Committee one of lst seson's juniors, Brdley Clutton, who is very enthusistic nd helpful. It is nice to see young mn wnting to be involved in this wy fter this own junior creer hs finished. 0

20 Counties HERTFORDSHIRE John Wood GREAT! Gret! Tht ws our Keith Hrtridge from Welwyn nd Htfield, when he won the World Vetern Over 0 Consoltion Men's Singles Gold Medl t Zgreb, Yugoslvi in June. Keith who ws disppointed in being the only Hertfordshire plyer to be knocked out in the groups, ws lter over the moon nd on top of the World, when he defeted Rolf Gros of Germny in the finl in stright sets. In the semi-finl he bet Englishmn John Prtt from Buckinghmshire +8 in the third. Winning this World Crown rounded-off fbulous seson for Keith, where he won both the Men's nd Vetern's Singles titles in the Welwyn nd Htfield Legue's Closed Chmpionships, s well s winning the Men's Doubles with Dve Wilson. On top of these successes Keith's legue tem DeHvilnd, consisting of Dve Wilson, Kevin Hrber, Sid Tuvey nd himself, won the Division Trophy. Kcilll Hrlridsc HAMPSHIRE QUITE few chnges on the Hmpshire Committee from lst seson, some little puzzling. The Chirmn for the pst few sesons, Bsingstoke's Terry Duffield, did not signify to the AGM whether he wished to continue nd did not turn up for the meeting. For the first time I cn remember nd not, I consider, good thing, there ws vote for the Chirmn's post. This ws becuse Bsingstoke hd proposed Southmpton's Ron Wilshere s Chirmn nd <' ws duly elected. Tmmy Goss (nee Couplnd) is to run the Junior County Tem. How good it is to see young plyers, especilly femles, tking on these jobs. Fr too mny plyers tke lot out of the gme t this level, but few re prepred to put something bck into the gme. Well done girls!! Bob Cox is to run the Veterns Tem. 21 Counties LEICESTERSHIRE Tony Lillicrpp WITH certin mount of regret tht I write my first rticle for Tble Tennis News becuse it signls the retirement of my predecessor Terry Brown, both from the plying nd dministrtive side of our gme. Terry, tireless worker for both the Leicestershire Legue nd Leicestershire Assocition for mny yers nd one of the most cpble scribes in Tble Tennis hs decided the time is ripe for rest. DecIint' The grdul decline in interest in tble tennis witnessed in recent sesons would t lest in the Leicester Legue, pper to be slowing down with twelve full divisions, exctly the sme s lst seson, scheduled for the forthcoming seson. At the time of writing; I hve no informtion from either the Hinckley or Loughborough legues but my spies inform me tht both of these legues re expecting to be t bout the sme size s lst seson so perhps the hoped for revivl of locl tble tennis is on its wy. Titns Argubly the most coveted title in Leicestershire, tht of Leicester Legue division chmpions, sw Thorn Lighting emerge triumphnt from their seson long bttle ginst /87 chmpions Knighton Prk, thus ensuring new nme will pper on the Gollnd Shield for the 87/88 seson. These two titns of locl tble tennis went into their finl mtch of the seson, coincidentlly, ginst ech other, with Thorn needing to record t lest sets to secure the title nd Knighton Prk needing, it relly ws tht close. Prk's most successful plyer Kren Smith ws unvilble for this mtch so County number Dve Gnnon ws brought in. Prk rn up -0 led nd looked on course to retin their title when the turning point in the mtch cme. Trevor Kerry bet Dve Gnnon, John Hollnd bet Mrtin Pickles nd Lee Neill bet Phil Smith to bring the scores level. Gnnon nd Pickles mde the score - to Knighton Prk nd it ws left to Kerry nd Hollnd to pull the mtch out of the fire for Thorn by beting Gnnon nd Smith in the doubles. It ws fntstic mtch to wtch with few of the gmes going the wy of the previous legue encounter but Thorn won the division title for the first time in their history nd in doing so remined unbeten throughout the seson. NORFOLK Reg Hogg Welcome bck to the fold Cromer - smll legue who dis-ffilited couple of yers go. They re dvertising for new tems nd plyers so ll those who kept plying in tht legue under flse nmes for such tems s Fkenhm cn now revert bck to their proper nmes with no punishment. (ll right J.Y.?). The rod blocks on the A.0 hve been removed. Neil Pickrd going full time s T.T. plyer cme s surprise to us. He hs decided to give it try under YTS scheme for two yers. We ll know tht it is very precrious occuption but his interest is there, the tlent is there nd by plying ginst the best in the lnd will find out whether he cn mke it. Good Luck. Phil Logsdon hs returned to Norwich full time from university nd should mke n impct on the locl scene. I hope to see him plying for the County s they hve difficult seson hving being promoted to the second division. He hs lso signed for the Britnni club of Ipswich in the first division British Legue. NORTHUMBERLAND Aubrey Drpkin AS YOU cn see I hve tken over s contributor from Puline Long who hs undertken this tsk successfully for mny yers. I m still very ctive in the locl circles being Chirmn of the County, writing on tble tennis for the locl newspper nd lso hving regulr Sturdy fternoon spot on Rdio Newcstle. The future for the County looks very promising with quite number of youngsters now mking excellent progress. I m delighted for young Brry Forster who is presently holding top plce in the Ntionl cdet rnkings. At n even younger ge level Andrew Wilkinson, Oliver Court nd Christ Dodd did us proud by winning the ntionl under knock out competition. We re still short of girl plyers but we re working on it. The summer seson, in which Gteshed Tble Tennis Club won the summer legue title, ended with tournment t Blydon Youth Club. Over sixty plyers entered on Sundy in August, not usully time of yer ssocited with tournments, nd Eddie Smith confirmed his top seeding by tking the title. Clre Mouzon of Ashington won the ldies chmpionship. Eight events were held nd nerly 00 mtches plyed during the course of the dy. The big event in October is, of course, the Englnd versus Chin mtch which tkes plce on nd October t Eldon Squre Recretion Centre in Newcstle to strt the Chinese tour. 22 ICounties STAFFORDSHIRE Jck Chlkley Perhps it is not surprising tht, fter the problems of lst seson, Stffordshire will not be entering senior side in the County Chmpionship. The filure to complete ll our fixtures lst seson prompted the committee to write to our leding plyers sking for their views on the future of the side nd whether they were prepred to commit, themselves to be vilble to ply for the County. We hd only replies. There ws only one decision possible. We believed tht the lessening of interesting in the County Chmpionship ws generl feture cross the country but Derek Sherrtt, who ttended the Chmpionship Conference this yer, ws surprised to lern tht, in fct, interest ws incresing nd severl counties were dding to their entries. We cn only hope tht yer or two out of the competition will led to rekindling of interest nd tht Stffordshire cn once gin tke their plce s one of the leding county sides. The AGM bck in June sw number of chnges on the committee. Arthur Thoms from Wolverhmpton tkes over s chirmn nd Dennis Butcher becomes coching secretry. Derek Sherrtt continues to crry the min burden s secretry nd the reminder of the committee continue in the existing positions. In the County Legue, both Wlsll A nd Wlsll B chieved 00% records in cpturing the top positions in Div.l nd Div. nd their C tem were prevented from mking it ht-trick of wins by n unbeten Wolves C side which topped Div. Congestion County Legue dtes for the coming seson re likely to be Oct.9, Nov., Jn., Feb. nd Mr.l8 with Dec.7, Feb. nd Apr. s possible lterntives. The County Closed Tournment hs been booked t Lilleshll for Mrch th difficult choice becuse of the congestion of events t tht time of yer. It clshes with the Clevelnd str, but the lterntive dtes, prt from Ester, ll clsh with the British Legue or other events closer to home. Crig Bkewell, who retined his county closed chmpionship this yer, chieved remrkble record lst seson by winning ll his mtches in the Potteries Premier Division progrmme. He completed the full progrmme of mtches nd is the first plyer in the Potteries to chieve such n impressive record, surely n outstnding performnce bering in mind the strength in depth of plyers in the Potteries Legue. Congrtultions, Crig. Finlly, reminder to ll press secretries within the County. News items which they wish to 'hve included in this column should be sent or phoned to me well before the end of ech month - tel. Stfford WARWICKSHIRE Geoff Tylor nd Neil Whetley THE end of lst seson ws very trumtic for both the Birminghm nd Wrwickshire Associtions with the deth of Murice Goldstein. Both ssocitions were thrown into chos. Murice ws both Mr Birminghm nd Mr Wrwickshire nd everyone knew of the work he did but not mny people knew the full extent of wht the jobs entiled. However with the ble help of Brin Lloyd nd Veronic Jckson both of the ssocitions hve formulted new committees nd I m sure it will be the strt of new er for them. The County A.G.M. ws held in July nd new fces re to be seen on the committee. The officers for the coming seson re President Stn Lenton (Coventry), Chirmn nd Ntionl Councillor Geoff Tylor (Coventry). Bob Montgomery (Coventry), Umpires Secretry - Mrs Dot Shewrd (Birminghm), Competitions Secretry - Jim Whitehed (Birminghm), Coching Officer - Don Richrds (Coventry) nd Coching Secretry - Chris Lech (Birminghm). Senior tems to ply in the County Chmpionships this yer will be much the sme s lst yer, the exceptions being we hve lost two of our leding juniors. They wnt to ply t higher level nd with our junior tem being relegted from the junior premier division the committee reluctntly greed to their requests. This yer we' hve two senior tems, two junior tems nd Vets tem. Another disppointment we hve hd during the close seson is tht we hve lost two of our Interntionl Umpires. John Devey nd Tim Huc hve decided to cll it dy. Tim is hopefully going into the Ministry. We wish them ll the best of luck in the future. On the plus side however we hve gined two new County Umpires - Bob Montgomery nd Reg Wrnes nd we lso hve nother Three who hve pssed the written test pper. The county still need more umpires nd test ppers cn be obtined from Dot Shewrd the umpires secretry. Birminghm held their A.G.M. in July nd the job of Generl Secretry is filled by Veronic Jckson (who ws ssistnt to Murice) nd Brin Lloyd s well s being the Chirmn hs tken on some duties s prt time dministrtor. A night legue will lso tke plce with ll mtches being plyed on one night, it will consist of mn tems nd ech mtch will consist of 7 sets - singles nd doubles. I her the Lemington Assocition re hopeful of their new hedqurters being completed nd in use by the beginning of the seson. They hve purchsed the old Lemington Boy's Club, the plce hs been gutted nd its plce will be two courts t which they cn ply theirtown mtches. Wrwickshire nd Coventry President Stn Lenton hs been in hospitl to hve n opertion nd fter post opertive infection he now seems well on the wy to recovery nd beginning to pick up his business nd tble tennis commitments. The Birminghm Assocition will be stging one of the Chinese tour mtches on the th October t the Cocks Moor Leisure Centre in the city. Tickets re priced t nd.0 nd re vilble from the orgniser Brin Lloyd on Birminghm (0) 7 0. It should be splendid evening nd we would like ll members to support it. Our tems ended the seson with the usul mixed bg of results. The Senior A tem's wins over Worcs nd Cheshire in their lst two mtches enbled them to nrrowly void relegtion from Div. A. No. Phil Gunn cpped memorble seson with wins in ech mtch to give him 9 win (out of) verge. BrryJohnson, who celebrted his 0th ppernce for the tem, won (out of ) s did Mike Browne (out of ). Despite two wins on the second weekend t St. Neots, thejunior A Tem lost their Premier Div. plce.
