1 Selection Criteria Junior National Team 1. Introduction- Junior National Team 1.1. Being selected as a member of a National team representing Canada is a great honour. Badminton Canada (BCan) recognizes the importance of the next generation of young Canadian badminton players and assisting in their development. BCan has established a goal of providing more support and guidance to these athletes with the vision of greater success on the international stage The Junior National Team will be sub-divided into two separate groups Junior National Team (U15, U17 and U19 age groups) Junior National Development Team (U11, U13 age groups) 1.3. Only athletes who have been named to the Junior National and/or Junior National Development Teams (referred to as JNT combined unless otherwise indicated throughout balance of this document) will be eligible to compete in the Junior Pan Am Championships and/or Junior World Championships 1.4. Athletes will be named members of the team in June 2018 and will remain members of the National Team for one full calendar year, through the 2019 Junior National Championships (May 2019) All benefits and costs associated with membership on the JNT will be outlined in early Introduction- Pan Am Junior Championships 2.1. Participation in the Pan American Junior Championships is important for Badminton Canada for the following reasons- It provides a benchmark to compare the level of junior development in Canada with the rest of the Pan American Zone It is an excellent development experience for athletes and coaches It brings key ranking points opportunities for BWF junior rankings

2 It is important politically for Badminton Canada to remain active in key BWF international competitions There may be funding opportunities available to Canada from the Badminton Pan Am Confederation (BPAC) 2.2. Tournament play at the Pan American Junior Championships includes one Team event (Sudirman Cup style: 1MS, 1WS, 1MD, 1WD, 1XD) and Individual play in all disciplines. For Individual play, each country is restricted to 4 entries in singles and mixed doubles and 2 entries in doubles per age category Athletes who are selected to be part of the Canadian Junior Pan American team (Team and Individual events) may have to attend a mandatory pre-competition staging/training camp immediately prior to the Junior Pan American Championships. Should the camp be held, if a player is unable to commit to attending the duration of the training camp and the competition, they will be considered to have declined their invitation to participate in the event 2.4. Athletes who decline their invitation to participate in the Junior Pan American Championships and/or training camp will not be eligible for selection to the 2018 Junior World Championships 3. Introduction- World Junior Championships 3.1. Participation in the World Junior Championships is important for Badminton Canada for the following reasons- It provides a benchmark to compare the level of junior development in Canada with the rest of the world It is an excellent development experience for athletes and coaches It brings key ranking points opportunities for BWF junior rankings It is important politically for Badminton Canada to remain active in key BWF international competitions With Canada hosting the 2018 World Junior Championships, it provides an opportunity to show that Canada is an exceptional host of major international events 3.2. Tournament play at the World Junior Championships includes one Team event (Sudirman Cup style: 1MS, 1WS, 1MD, 1WD, 1XD) and Individual play in all disciplines. For Individual play, each country is restricted to the number of entries as per BWF regulations based on the previous World Junior Championships results Athletes who are selected to be part of the Canadian Junior National team may have to attend a mandatory pre-competition staging/training camp immediately prior to the Junior World Championships.
