2 NET DOMINATOR Practice Plan- Session 1 Theme of this camp: MATCH PREPARATION Warm-up Drill Objective Tim e Skipping Side Step To teach the players the skills that link to technical development To develop quality movement skills laterally 1 min 3 min Technical/Game Development (Players in Groups of 4 with Assigned Coach for Day) Drill Objective Time Continental Grip Skills Warm-Up Warm-Up Ball Recognition Up and Down River Volley to Volley To establish quality continental grip skills that will help in developing the slice BH, volleys & feel for underspin. To warm up strokes, players must go to the net on short ball moving forwards. To get the players competing and allow the coaches to evaluate game skills; observe slice, volley skills in competition & open environment To establish good continental grip skills for quality volley technique 5 min 5 min 15 min 10 min Carioca and Sprint To develop quality movement skills forwards 2 min Volley Progression Live Ball To focus on good volley technique with a continental grip in open environment. Work specifically on movement of stepping out with outside foot and stepping forward with inside foot. 10 min Tag Complex Coordinatio n To warm the players up physically and mentally To develop complex coordination skills 5 min 5 min Athletic Development: Overhead Carioca Overhead ½ Court Approach Pass Teach players to move back for overheads with arms up. Work on balance and strength. Develop confidence in overheads using continental grip. To teach players how to transition to the net, to find the strike zone on the approach and control the volley to a target. 5 min 10 min 15 min Reaction Catch To improve reaction speed and anticipation skills 5 min Break Total Time During break, coaches divide players into two equal teams 15 min 1 hour 15 min Total Time 20 min

3 NET DOMINATOR Practice Plan- Session 2 Theme of this camp is MATCH PREPARATION Junior Team Tennis - Team Competition Drill Objective Time 1. Discuss Theme Match Preparation 5 min 2. Dynamic Warm Up Coaches get players warmed up for Match Play 3. Serve & Return To work on developing the basic foundation of serve & return patterns in a closed environment 10 min 15 min 4. Organize Teams Players come up with team name, cheer 5 min 5. Team Line Up Line both teams up like college dual format. Coaches announce the doubles matches. 6. Doubles Coaches review doubles positions, roles prior to playing. The team match starts with a doubles match. Coach encourages players to attempt serve and volley tactics. Players play 2 rounds of doubles matches. Matches are timed to allow for the coordination of multiple matches. 7. Singles At the completion of the doubles matches, send out players to compete in singles. 5 min 40 min 20 min 8. Camp Wrap Up/Review Character Theme/ Homework Bring the parents and player together to the side of the court and show the homework assignment for the players (see camp curriculum) 20 minutes left open for water breaks, transition time between drills, etc. 10 min Total camp = 3.5 hours

4 Warm-up Skipping Objective: to teach the players the skills that link to technical development. Execution 1. Line the players up on the 60 baseline 2. Skip to the net while facing the net 3. Skip forwards with height at least 10 skips 4. Skip sideways to the net 1. Left / Left 2. Right / Right Observation Coordination of Arms: Both arms close to the body Use of opposite arm to foot Both arms help the player gain height as skip. Athletic position: Head and shoulders level and eyes forward Back straight Quiet feet, with strong push off the ground Athletic position Arms and the legs do not cross the midline of the body (Note that the picture shows the player s knee crossing the midline). Knees and elbows are at 90 degrees to the body. Coordination Dynamic Balance Lower Body Upper and Lower Body

5 Warm-up Side Steps Objective: to develop quality movement skills laterally. Execution: Start at the 60 doubles sideline, move across the court to other sideline 1. Side steps with arms held out wide at shoulder height, 2. Move across court and back four times Observation Athletic Position Head and shoulders level and eyes forward Back straight. Dynamic Balance Arms & Feet: Both arms stretched out straight at shoulder height and at the side of the body Both feet pointing straight ahead. Upper & Lower Body

6 Warm-up Tag Objective: to warm up the players physically and mentally. Execution: 1. Groups of 4 players, each on 1 court with a coach 2. Players move twice around court slowly as a group to warm up 3. Tag: the teacher identifies a leader in each group who will be the tagger 4. Define the space within the doubles area of the 60 court for the tag game 5. Play 3-4 rounds 6. Once a player is tagged they have to stand still until all of the players have been tagged by the team leader Observation Change of Direction: ability of players to change direction quickly (links to changing direction quickly and recovery in the game). ability of players to keep head level and eyes forward with a good posture Agility Dynamic Balance

7 Warmup Carioca and Sprint Objective: to develop quality movement skills moving forward Execution: 1. Start on the 60 doubles side line, facing the net 2. Two carioca stepskeeping the chest facing the net 3. Turn and sprint through the other 60 doubles side line 4. Repeat with players facing the net. Start carioca with other foot and move back to the side they started on Observation Carioca steps head level and eyes forward. chest, shoulders and hips face the net while the legs cross over Coordination Dynamic Balance Sprint: Use of arms to increase the leg drive. (This will increase the speed of the legs.) Speed

8 Warm-up Complex Coordination Objective: to develop complex coordination skills. Complex coordination means doing one thing with one part of the body while doing something else with another part. It is an athletic skill that is vital to becoming a good tennis player. Execution: 1. Two players face each other about 4-6 feet apart 2. Player A starts by tossing one ball with the right hand for player B to catch with the left hand 4. Player B then passes the ball from the left hand to the right before tossing it back to Player A.s left hand. 5 The ball should be tossed to the side of the body 6. Add a second ball. PROGRESSIONS: 1. Increase the number of balls to 3 and then 4 2. Introduce lateral movement while tossing the balls Observation Speed of coordination: how quickly the players can get to four balls indicates the level of their complex coordination skills. Complex Coordination Observation Ready Position: players should have a good athletic base (feet a little more than shoulder width apart, with knees bent) Their hands are out to the side, and the players should catch between their hip and waist Balance

9 Development Reaction Catch Objective: to improve reaction speed and anticipation skills (Reaction catch is a skill that can be developed at a young age). Execution: 1. Player A holds a ball in each hand at shoulder height and drops one randomly 2. Player B is 6 ft. away and sprints forward to catch the ball after one bounce 3. Player B moves back after each successful try OR lowers arms nearer to the ground Progression: Player B adds split step before Player A drops ball; Player B takes 2-3 steps forward, split steps, turns and catches ball to side & front of body. Observation Reaction Catch. Reaction and quick movement forwards Catch with hand on appropriate side of body Reaction Speed Coordination

10 Technical/Game Development Continental Grip Skills Warm-up Objective: For coaches to observe continental grip skills and for players to warm up making contact with the ball using a continental grip. Execution: 1. Two players start on each service line- one behind the other (players are on both sides of the court) 2. Player A feeds the ball to Player B 3. Player A moves behind Player C 4. Player B makes contact and sends the ball back to Player C 5. Player B then moves behind Player D. 6. This drill has a ping pong like rotation *If need to regress, have players in 2 s hit with partner cooperatively using continental grip Observation Continental Grip: are the players able to control the head of the racquet above the hand while having a continental grip? GAME: 1. Longest Rally- which court can get the most balls over the net without missing. 2. Game to 11. Coordination Observation Control of the Ball to a Target : players should learn how to generate pace using their legs and core, not by increasing the size of the swing. Work with the players to set the racquet out in front of their body and transfer their weight through the shot using their legs to send the ball back to the other side. Upper/Core/ Lower Body

11 Technical/Game Development Up and Down the River Objective: to get the players competing and allow the coaches to evaluate game skills Execution Observation Skills 1. If preferred, create two full 60 singles courts using throw down lines (lines run along the net post to create the new singles sidelines) 2. Play games to 7 points, playing down the line 3. Once 50% of the teams finish- the lead coach will yell bump (winners up, challengers down) HANDS: Grips, Preparation, Swing Paths FEET: Are the players willing to move forward? EYES/MIND: Contact between the hip and the shoulder the strike zone? Balance Coordination Agility Balance Coordination Lower and Upper Body Ball Recognition Observation / Player HANDS: GPS? P1 - P2 - P3 - P4 - FEET: moving forwards? EYES/MIND: Strike Zone?

12 Technical Development Volley to Volley Objective: to establish good continental grip skills for quality volley technique Execution Observation 1. P1 and 2 stand across from each other at the net grip choked up on the racquet and nondominant hands behind their backs 2. As each player progresses the hand can slowly be brought down from the throat to the handle. To isolate skill: Bring Players closer to net. P1 tosses to P2, P2 volleys across net, P1 catches; change roles. HANDS: Player has continental grip with racquet above the hand. FEET: Player maintains athletic base, split steps before volley. FEET: Player sets outside foot behind the ball then steps to the ball with opposite foot. EYES/MIND: Timing of Split Step Coordination Upper Body Balance Lower Body Reaction Speed Anticipation Observation / Player P1 - P2 - P3 - P4 - HANDS: Cont. Grip / Racquet above hand? FEET: Split Step Before Volley? FEET: Sets outside leg behind ball?

13 Technical Development Volley Progression Live Ball Game Objective: to establish good continental grip skills for quality volley technique Execution Observation 1. Players begin game from service line with a cooperative first feed. 2. Volley to volley game to 7 points. HANDS: Player has continental grip with racquet above the hand. FEET: Player maintains athletic base, split steps before volley. FEET: Player sets outside foot behind the ball then steps to the ball with opposite foot. EYES/MIND: Timing of Split Step Coordination Upper Body Balance Lower Body Reaction Speed Anticipation Observation / Player P1 - P2 - P3 - P4 - HANDS: Cont. Grip / Racquet above hand? FEET: Split Step Before Volley? FEET: Sets outside leg behind ball?

14 Athletic Development Skill Overhead Carioca Objective: to develop quality movement skills moving backwards to prepare for overhead Execution: 1. Players begin facing net. 2. Players turn and drop step backwards with both hands up. 3. Players can execute movement with racket to simulate hitting overhead. Observation Carioca steps maintains balance while moving backwards. Both hands up, shoulders turned toward net. Coordination Dynamic Balance

15 Technical Development Overhead Smash Objective: to establish good continental grip skills for quality overhead technique Execution Observation 1. Players are across net from each other with one at baseline and one at net. 2. Players at baseline cooperatively feed overheads to player at net. 3. Players switch positions after designated amount of time. See who can keep the longest smash rally going HANDS: player can maintain continental grip on overhead FEET: player can perform sideways cross-over (drop-step) with balance HANDS: player has both hands up Coordination Dynamic Balance Core Observation / Player P1 - P2 - P3 - P4 - HANDS: maintain cont. grip? FEET: Sideways X-over with balance? HANDS: Both hands up?

16 Technical/Game Development Approach and Passes Game Objective: to establish good continental grip skills for quality volley technique. P3 P4 P1 P2 Execution Observation 1. P1 plays P3 and P2 plays P4. 2. P1 and 2 are approaches. P3 and 4 are passers. 3. P3/4 feed the ball to short of the service line (Green Box Target). 4. P1/2 approach and play out the point. Lobs are allowed. First to 7. Then switch roles. 5. Team Singles FULL COURT. First to 7. EYES/MIND: player moves forward to short ball and contacts in strike zone? (between hip and shoulder) HANDS: player can maintain continental grip at the net with volleys and overheads. HANDS: Movement of the bottom edge of the racket to the target Reaction Speed Anticipation Footwork Upper Body Observation / Player P1 - P2 - P3 - P4 - EYES/MIND: forwards and contact? HANDS: Continental Grip at net? HANDS: bottom edge of racket to target

18 Technical/Game Development Serve and Return Patterns P1 P4 C P3 P2 Execution Observation 1. P1 and 4 are serving to the wide targets and coming forward to volley off the return down the line (Green Boxes) 2. P2 and 3 are returning CROSS COURT. 3. Coach is helping the Deuce returner (P2) with: - Split-Step - Outside Leg Load - Unit Turn with Shoulders - Weight moving through direction of the return. 4. Coach decides when to rotate players around every position. EYES/MIND: Player has a timely split-step? HANDS: player has an efficient unit turn? FEET: player can load on outside leg before weight transfer through the direction of the return with BALANCE? 19 Teachable Moments Match Preparation Objective: to work on thinking about ways to be prepared both mentally and physically before and after a match Character Theme Talking Points THROUGHOUT THE CAMP: 1. What did you do to prepare to come to camp today? 2. Who prepared your bag? Who got your snacks/water bottle ready? 3. How do you prepare for competition? 4. When does preparation begin? How much time are you awake before going to practice? Ask about times. (at least 1.5 hrs before) 5. How do you get in the right mind set? Is your mindset resilient and ready for adversity? 6. How much sleep did you get last night? Do you sleep more before a match? 7. What do you like to eat before you matches/practice? 8. Do you like to be rushed before a match? DURING TEAM COMPETITION SESSION: What do you need to have in your bag before going out to court?

20 Homework 1. Jump Rope Objective: to develop coordination, foot speed and endurance Execution: 1. Each player needs a jump rope of the right length 2. Player must learn to: i) jump rope 50 times with BOTH feet together MOVING FORWARDS ii) jump rope 50 times with alternate feet MOVING FORWARDS. 3. Player must learn to: i) jump rope 30 times moving to the LEFT with BOTH feet. ii) jump rope 30 times moving to the RIGHT with ALTERNATE feet Teaching points for players and parents The arms are close to the body The arms and legs are coordinated and the player has a rhythm Landing is on balls of feet with QUIET feet THE HEAD AND SOULDERS ARE LEVEL. 21 Homework 2 - Chest Throw Objective: to develop lower, core and upper body strength as part of development of the kinetic chain Execution: 1. Each player has a small soccer ball or basketball 2. Player is trying to throw the ball from the chest as far forward as possible in a straight line i. The feet should be shoulder width apart ii. The fingers of both hands should be behind the ball, and the elbows are bent at shoulder height iii. Both knees should be bent iv. Extend the knees, followed by the arms to throw the ball forwards from the chest as fast and far as possible v. Repeat the same action with the legs and arms, but this time the player turns around and tosses the ball as far as possible over the head and behind the body Teaching points for players and parents The player can extend the legs before the arms generates speed and distance of the ball towards a target Complex Coordination (development of kinetic chain) Upper, Core and Lower Body Dynamic Balance
