1 2015 USTA GEORGIA 55 & OVER COMBO STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS To: From: Re: USTA Team Captain Lindsey Davila, Southern Combo Doubles State League Coordinator 2015 Georgia Combo Doubles State Championships We are extremely happy that you and your team have chosen to be part of the USTA Georgia 55 & Over Combo Doubles State Championship. We are looking forward to a fun weekend and providing the opportunity for your team to advance to the Sectional Championships. The 55 & Over Combo Doubles State Championship will be held Friday, September 18 th through Sunday, September 20th. If we have 4 or less teams in a level, we will attempt to play on Saturday and Sunday only. This packet has all the information you will need to register your team. Please review the enclosed materials carefully. The tournament will be held at the Ann and Doc McCluskey Tennis Center on clay courts (and hard courts if needed) and the Coman Tie-break Procedure will be used in all tie-break situations (see attached explanation.) Please remind the players they are playing on their 2014 YEAR-END RATINGS. A lunch will be held at the Ann and Doc McCluskey Tennis Center on Saturday, September 19th between 11:30 p.m. 2:00 p.m. If you have questions please contact your local league coordinator. 2 2015 USTA GEORGIA 55 & OVER COMBO STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS INFORMATION SHEET When: September 18 20, 2015 Where: LaGrange, GA Levels: 55 & Over Men and Women 6.5, 7.5 & 8.5 Registration: Friday, September 18, :15 7:45 Ann and Doc McCluskey Tennis Center Captain s meeting conference call Wednesday, September 7pm Format: Play Begins: Awards: Round robin Friday or Saturday at 7:45 a.m. All players on the Champion and Finalist teams who are covered by the entry fee will receive an award. 3 Coman Tiebreak Procedure Try it, you ll like it! Switch sides after 1 st point to the deuce court. Then switch sides every 4 points thereafter. Each player serves on the side they serve from during the set. THE COMAN TIE-BREAK FORMAT: The Coman tiebreak procedure is identical to the regular tiebreak procedure except that the players change ends after the first point and then after every four points, and at the conclusion of the tiebreak. Set Tie Break: First to win 7 points by 2 wins the Game and Set 3rd set Match Tie Break: First to win 10 points by 2 wins match. The player whose turn it is to serve shall serve the first point from the deuce court. After the first point, the players shall change ends and the following two points shall be served by the opponent(s) (in doubles, the player of the opposing team due to serve next) starting from the add court. After this, each player/team shall serve alternately for two consecutive points (starting from the ad court); changing ends after every four points, until the end of the tie break game. Switch sides after points 1,5,9,13,17... and at the conclusion. Principle Advantages Fairness By changing ends more frequently, the effects of the elements (sun, wind, etc.) are distributed more evenly between the two opponents as opposed to playing six consecutive points before changing ends. In doubles, the server will always serve from the same end of the court, rather than having to serve from both ends.

5 DIRECTIONS FOR COMPLETING REGISTRATION FORMS Step 1: Complete the form 55 & Over Combo Team Information Sheet. 1) Write the name of your local league in space next to Local League. (Do not write the name of your team or your facility.) 2) Write your team s level in the space next to Combo NTRP Team Level. 3) Write your team number in the space next to Team #. 4) Place a checkmark next to the appropriate division, Men or Women. 5) In the Players column, write the name of the captain on the first line. If original captain is not the acting captain for the State Championship, list the acting captain s name. Enter all players by last name first. All players other than captain should be entered alphabetically. Step 2: Include a copy of your roster from TennisLink. (captain must be logged in to do so) Step 3: Entry Fee is $30 for each player, with check made out to your local league. Step 4: Deposit Fee is $100 per team, with check made out to USTA Georgia. Teams who fail to complete all scheduled matches will forfeit their entry fee and deposit, and will be subject to sanctions during the next league year. At the conclusion of scheduled matches, all deposit checks will be destroyed.

9 2015 USTA Georgia League Tennis State Championships Withdrawal & Cancellation Policy Tournament Withdrawal Policy Teams that withdraw twenty-two (22) days in advance of the start of the tournament will be reimbursed their security deposit and entry fee. Teams that withdraw within twenty-one (21) days of the start of the tournament and the posting of the draw will not be reimbursed their entry fee. Teams that withdraw once the draw is posted will forfeit their security deposit, entry fee and a grievance may be filed by the referee to the appropriate committee. Tournament Cancellation Policy During Round Robin Play Should inclement weather or other circumstances prevent the completion of all round robin play during the State Championship; the following procedures will be used to determine round robin winners: In the event that only one team in a round robin has a mathematical chance of finishing first, that team will be declared the winner of the round robin. If more than one team has a mathematical chance of winning their round robin, and the first place team has already beaten the other teams with a mathematical chance of winning, the 1 st place team would be considered the round robin winner. If a round robin winner cannot be determined, only teams with a mathematical chance of finishing first will receive an entry into a drawing. Undefeated teams will receive a second entry into the drawing. Once a winner is determined in each round robin flight in a particular level, each team winning their round robin will be put into a drawing to determine one state champion. During Playoffs Should inclement weather or other circumstances prevent the completion of all playoff rounds during the State Championship; the following procedures will be used to determine round robin winners: If cancellation occurs before or during the first round of playoffs, all group winners will receive two entries in the drawing and any best 2 nd place teams will receive one entry into the drawing to determine one state champion. Any winning team that has completed their first round match will also receive two entries into the drawing and the losing team will be excluded from the drawing. If cancellation occurs during the second round of playoffs, all teams that have not had their team match decided will receive one entry in the drawing to determine one state champion. Any winning team that has completed their second round match will also receive one entry into the drawing and the losing team will be excluded from the drawing. Once the finalists are determined, both teams will be told how the champion will be determined by the USTA Georgia Director of Leagues, should cancellation occur after the finals have begun play. If cancellation occurs once the finalists have been determined, but play has not begun, each team will receive an entry in the drawing to determine one state champion.

10 Frequently Asked Questions about the State Championships If you have a question about the 2015 USTA Georgia League Tennis State Championships; refer to this sheet as a handy reference. 1. Our team won both the winter/spring seasons and summer/fall, but a couple of our players were different. Can we take all our players? No. You must choose which season you are representing - winter/spring or summer/fall. Only those players on that roster, and who are otherwise qualified, may play. You cannot combine rosters. 2. How soon can we get our match schedule? The tentative schedule will be posted on the USTA Georgia Web Page ( or on TennisLink at least one week before the tournament starts. No schedules will be mailed to captains. At registration, captains will receive a final schedule that will replace the tentative one. 3. Why do I have to attend the captains meeting? On the captains conference call, we go over all the specific rules that apply for the tournament. All announcements concerning schedule changes are made at this time. The captains call is the only way we can ensure you are informed of changes or special situations you need to know about in order to make your tournament as smooth as possible. 4. Our team only has four players available. Will we have to forfeit all our matches? You must have a minimum of six players who can play all three positions, but if the Tournament Committee approves this prior to the tournament your team will be allowed to play with only 4 players for the entire tournament. These defaults would be subject to the default rule (see #5). 5. What is the Default rule for the State Championships? Any team defaulting a court for any reason will be fined $100 per court defaulted. The fine must be paid in the tournament room prior to the team s next match. If it s the team s last match of the tournament, they must pay prior to leaving. If a team does not pay the fine, a grievance will be filed against all members listed on the team information sheet, which could result in suspension from any USTA League play until the fine is paid. Any matches played during that time will be reverted to losses. The reason for this regulation is it s your team s responsibility to have players on every court at each match during a state championship. When a team defaults a line, it not only can affect the outcome of the tournament, but more importantly, it affects those players who showed up ready to play, only to find their opponents did not show. * Players must play at the level their rating was on the roster at the time of their local league play! If there was no local league play, players must use their 2014 Year-End Rating.
