1 Philosophy Statement We believe that through athletics, students learn many important lessons in life. Teamwork, self-discipline and control, leadership, integrity, overcoming obstacles, handling success and failure, and the joy of competing are but a few of the things taught by participation in athletics. Specifically, tennis is an important part of the athletic program at Wenatchee High School. It is our goal and tradition every year to run a successful program and help build the confidence of the players which hopefully transfers to other areas of life. It is our belief that it is better to be at the top or tend towards the top than to be at the bottom. To that end, it is the job of the coaches to take players where they are and move them as close as possible to their maximum potential over the course of the season. Winning is a natural by-product of improving players. In particular, our goals every year can be divided into three different areas: Personal Goals: Team Goals: 1. To give players the tools and the opportunities to succeed. 2. To teach honesty and good sportsmanship in all situations. 3. To take on challenges and to find joy in competition. 4. To learn that hard work brings rewards. 5. To produce a state champion in singles or doubles. 1. To win state. 2. To win the Big 9 dual match season. 3. To take as many players as possible to state. 4. To teach team concept to players involved in an individual sport. Long-Term Goals: Eligibility: 1. To give players the skills and attitude to continue enjoying tennis beyond high school as a lifetime sport. 2. To give qualified players the opportunity to obtain tennis scholarships in college. 1. Have a current physical examination. 2. Both student and parent must sign an athletic contract. 3. Read and sign the safety guidelines for tennis. 4. Purchase an ASB card and pay a sports fee. 5. Players must be academically eligible to play as determined by the AD.

2 Attendance: 6. All athletes must be cleared through the Athletic office having completed the preceding requirements. All players are expected to be at practice daily and attend all matches unless excused by the coach. Tennis adheres to school policies regarding attendance. For example, if a player misses a class (unexcused) on the day of a match, the player will be ineligible to play. 1. If a player misses a day of practice (unexcused) he/she may be ineligible to play in the next match. 2. All players should be at practice by 3:30 unless otherwise excused. The coach will determine consequences for tardiness. 3. All players are required to stay throughout the whole match in any dual match with another school, unless excused by the coach. Remember, you are part of a team and your teammates need your support. Discipline: Profanity: Profanity will not be tolerated on the practice court, during matches or road trips. The player will be given one warning and then will be asked to leave practice that day. On the first warning the player will be required to sit out for 15 minutes. During a match the player will be given one warning then may have to forfeit the match. Racquet and Ball Abuse: Banging the racquet on the court surface, throwing it into the net or fence (or over it), and/or slamming a ball onto the next court or over the fence will not be tolerated. The same penalty system will be employed as with profanity. It is important that players learn to control their emotions. Sportsmanship: Good sportsmanship will be expected of all players. Examples of such will be demonstrated and talked about during practice and players will be expected to improve in this vital area. A coach-player conference will occur if any player chooses not to cooperate. Drug and Alcohol Abuse: School policy will be strictly enforced. Lettering: A player must play in at least six varsity matches in order to letter in tennis. Coach s decision may also permit a player to letter. A JV player may earn a varsity letter if he/she plays either singles or doubles at the No. 1 position in at least six matches. Junior varsity lettering will be at the JV coach s discretion. 3 to foster unity and teamwork Team Composition: WHS tennis consists of boys and girls varsity and JV teams. Varsity Tennis: The boys and girls varsity teams will normally consist of 10 players each. However, coaches may elect to carry one or two additional players. Players who wish to play varsity tennis qualify for open positions through a qualifying tennis tournament and by coach s observations. The qualifying tournament takes place at the beginning of each new season. Challenge matches are opportunities for players to advance to higher team positions in either singles or doubles, and occur periodically throughout the regular tennis season. Line-up placement is determined by player ability and performance; not by age or grade. Varsity teams turn out Monday through Friday from 3:30-5:15 p.m. at the Wenatchee Racquet and Athletic Club (WRAC). If necessary, a Saturday practice will be called to insure player eligibility for early season matches. If a player, because of performance, practice habits, absences/tardies, grades, behaviors, or attitude, requires replacement in the varsity line-up; the varsity coach has the discretion to make that decision. Junior Varsity Tennis: Boys and girls junior varsity teams will carry about 14 players each. Initial JV spots are determined by an annual qualifying tennis tournament. Challenge matches provide chances for players to advance to higher team spots. As with varsity players, performance, practice habits, absences/tardies, grades, behaviors, or attitude determine JV player inclusion, and line-up placement is determined by ability and performance. Junior varsity girls practices normally take place Monday through Friday at the outdoor WRAC tennis courts. JV girls practice from 3:30-5:15 p.m. The JV boys meet from 4:00-5:30 p.m. at the Walla Walla Park tennis courts. This is a new location for the JV boys. Due to current court limitation, adjustments will have to be made to practice and match times and sites. Participation Policy: Technical ability (strokes, ball control, net play, use of strategy) Competitive experiences in tennis (during season and out-of-season) Challenge matches Practice habits, absences/tardies, grades, behaviors, attitudes affect participation (potential removal from participation or removal from the team).

4 Coaches reserve the right to place qualified players on the teams without going through the qualifying process. AVAILABILITY -- a most important factor: players with jobs, involvement in other programs or outside activities, etc., may be removed from the team if these conflicts prevent consistent participation in practice or regular season matches. Qualifying begins the first week of practice so that it can be completed during the first two weeks. Coaches will determine which players may qualify for varsity and junior varsity teams. Players must be available to participate in challenges (including Saturdays) or lose the opportunity to move up. Player Cut Priority Policy: 1. First year seniors who have little or no tennis experience. 2. First year juniors who have little or no tennis experience. 3. Beginning sophomores or freshmen who have little or not athletic, especially tennis, experience. 4. Students who miss too many practices during qualifying or during the tennis season. Academic Challenge: To receive Academic Challenge credit, a player must participate in 80% of practices. Athletic Office Fax: (509) Address: 1101 Millerdale, Wenatchee, WA Wenatchee School District High School Tennis Safety Procedures The following procedures are to be followed in the case of injury to a student which requires emergency attention. Coach stays with student and begins first aid/ CPR, if necessary. Coach calls 911 on cell phone, or coach directs a student or fellow coach, if! available, to call 911. If no cell phone is available, a reliable student or coach will go quickly to WHS! Athletic Office (if accident occurs at WHS) to call 911.

5 Coach tells available student or coach to let 911 operator know if student is! receiving CPR. Coach instructs student or coach to stay on the telephone line and give! information to 911 operator, and to not hang up until the operator tells! him/her to hang up. Coach continues first aid procedures or CPR, if necessary, until emergency! personnel arrive, begin giving medical attention, and relieve the coach of! his/her duties. Coach notifies parents by phone. Directions to WHS tennis courts from corner of Russell Street (Millerdale) and Miller Street. Travel west on Millerdale to the WHS west-end student parking lot! entrance. Turn left into the student parking lot and proceed to the area west of the athletic! facility (new gym) and east of the WSD Bus Barn. Tennis courts are located behind and between the WSD bus barn and the WHS! athletic facility. Directions to the Wenatchee Racquet and Athletic Club (WRAC) outdoor tennis! courts from the corner of Russell Street (Millerdale) and Miller Street. Travel west on Millerdale to Lambert Street. Turn right (north) on Lambert and proceed to Cherry Street. Turn left (west) on Cherry Street and continue to the stop sign at Western Ave. Turn left (south) on Western Ave. and proceed around the curve onto #2 Canyon! Road going west. Pass the Racquet Club apartments on the left and continue to 1909 #2 Canyon! Road. The outdoor WRAC parking lot is just past the Racquet Club apartments on the! left. Courts are adjacent to and south of the parking lot. Coaches Responsibilities: Coaches will have a first aid kit at each tennis practice site and at all match! sites. That kit will include student emergency forms and an Athletic Office! emergency phone number card. Each coach will have an Emergency Action Plan readily available at all practices! and matches. Each coach will have a daily written lesson plan that includes periodic water! breaks.

6 Emergency Procedures in case of lightning: At WHS tennis courts: Coaches will stop practice at the first signs of an approaching weather system! that threatens lightning. Coaches will have students quickly pick up their belongings and hurry to the! WHS athletic facility using the south-side doors to that facility. Coaches will supervise students indoors until practice resumes one-half hour! after the last thunder was heard or until parents have picked up all! students. At the Outdoor WRAC tennis courts: Same as above except students and coaches will quickly move into the outdoor! court tennis building and remain there until practice resumes one-half hour! after the last thunder was heard or until parents have picked up all! students. Common-sense Practice, Playing, and Match Rules: Racquet or ball abuse: students are never to throw racquets or bash tennis balls! at other players, fences, over fences, or at nets. Never jump over the tennis nets. Students should not run across other players courts. Ball retrieval should! only happen between points of adjoining courts, and players on those! courts should be asked politely to retrieve errant tennis balls. No profanity, abusive language, or rude behaviors will be tolerated. Excellent sportsmanship is expected during practices and all matches. Players are expected to be on time and prepared for practices or matches. Players are expected to work hard with good attitudes and behaviors during! practices and matches. Players are expected to wear appropriate tennis shoes, socks, and apparel! during practices and matches. During matches, all Wenatchee High tennis players are expected to wear proper! tennis uniforms and/or warm-ups. All players are expected to remain at the practice or match site during the entire! practice or match. The only exceptions would be with coach s approval. Drug and alcohol use is prohibited. All players are expected to be excellent representatives of Wenatchee High! School, the WHS tennis program, the Wenatchee community, and their! families.
