2 Training &Development Program Getting Started Check the Schedules both on the Website and at the Bulletin Boards at the Court Sign up, both for Members and Guests, according to the Group you want to work out with. See Grouping Skill Levels. Thursday check in at the Rec Center front desk to receive your wrist band for the Clinic. Do this well in advance of the 11:30 start time. If the Clinic Schedule has less than 4 people signed up, the Clinic will be cancelled for that session. 4. A cancelled Clinic does not prevent people from self organizing for practice from 11:30 to 1:00. That is what Thursday afternoon is intended to accomplish. 5. Paddles are available for rent or purchase at sign in. 2
3 Safety First Training &Development Program Review the Program Schedule Be sure to have the proper shoes, ones that support your feet and are designed for court sports. Give any existing injury plenty of time and rest to heal before you resume play. Know how to get help quickly if you or a co-player are hurt or develop a medical problem. Have ICE # at sign in. Know there is a First Aid kit at the Operations Table. 4. Be aware of any obstacles in the area that you might run into or trip over. Do not jump over the court ball bumper stops. Never play on a wet court. They are extremely dangerous. 5. Check with your doctor regarding exercise and any physical conditions that exist or may have previously existed. Before Play: Warm-up: The main purpose of a warm-up period is to raise the general body temperature prior to playing. When the body temperature is raised it will increase your ability to perform the stretching exercises. The warm-up period should be approximately 5 minutes. Try a fast walk around the pickleball courts. Stretching: Following the warm-up period, begin a stretching program. This will increase your flexibility, which allows for better performance and decreases the possibility of injuries. Eye Protection: The use of proper eye protection is highly recommended for all players. During Play: Learn to return lobs correctly. Never back up on your heels. Instead, turn around and go back to get to the ball. Serious head injuries can occur if you fall over backwards. During play, if pain occurs, stop playing and ice the area of pain. Continuing to play will likely aggravate your problem. Age, experience, physical condition and athletic ability will impact the level of your game. Don t try to make plays beyond your abilities. After Play: Cool down and do a little stretching. This will help lower your body temperature and bring your heart rate slowly back to normal. 3
4 Training & Development Program How it works When: At the Rec Center every Thursday from 11:30 to 1:00. Thursday, at this time, will be devoted to Team and Training Partner Practice Who: Annual Members by Grouping. Visitors for a fee. Group 1 = Newcomers, Skill Level 1-5 Group 2 = Skill Levels 3 and up. How: Scheduled 2 weeks in advance so we know the # of participants and dominant skill Levels. See Drills and Thrills Sheet. See Sign up Process Why: To provide support for (self-fueled development, which means you self-assess and identify what you want to work on & we all help each other progress) utilizing proven methods advocated by the USAPA. To include Video Drills, Skills and Strategies provided by established instructors. The Developmental Volunteers are there to learn as well. They have agreed to schedule and to organize the process in order to introduce and foster a new dimension of practice into our Club s activities. 4

11 Train the Trainer - Introduction Teaching Pickleball to Beginning Players Draft May, 2015 The material contained on this site is meant for training purposes only. Pickleball Canada or the USAPA do not have certification courses for professional coaches in the sport of pickleball. Any individual that claims to be a certified coach is making a claim that is not supported by either Pickleball Canada or the United States Pickleball Association. The material on this blog is provided by Pickleball Canada for all coaches, teachers, recreation directors and players to use at no cost. All PCA asks is that any one using the material recognize the source. This package has been developed by Pickleball Canada to help instructors and coaches teach the game of pickleball to beginning players. This package can be used with players of all ages. The amount of material covered in one lesson may be varied to accommodate age and available court space. It is important that instructors try to vary the delivery so there is time for players to participate and practice. One of the best teaching strategies is to create an environment where players are encouraged to help each other in a cooperative manner. Players should feel comfortable asking questions, in fact, questions should be encouraged. We would like to thank all of you in advance for taking on the challenge of teaching the great game of pickleball. It is through the efforts of people like you that others will enjoy playing the fastest growing sport in Canada. This package is in draft format and will be updated as it is tested and instructors and students make comments.

13 Log on to this site: Training - Coaching and Tutoring For new players, the basics of the sport are easy to learn. Typically one session of three or four games is all that it takes. New players can readily expect more experienced players to be most willing to take the time to coach them through the initial steps. Once a new player is up and running, one-on-one tutoring can also be provided. This can be useful and effective when a player has been at the game for awhile and is wanting to improve his/her play. Just ask! And, from time to time, training clinics may be scheduled. Ask about these. From a self-help perspective, the links to the training materials and videos contained on this page may be of good benefit to both the beginner and to the experienced player alike who is wanting to improve his/her game.
