06 Years & Under Day Wednesday June nd Opening Ceremony Highlights A highlight for the opening ceremony was getting all Region Teams to stand up and everyone clapped for them making every team feel special. It s really nice to welcome regions from other places in the Territory to the Top End. We were very lucky to have some nice dry season weather for our. The speech made by Mikaela Sager the student MC for the Opening Ceremony was very inspirational. Student Tennis Tales PARRS REGION TEAM: Tayla Gossow and Tegan Genockey: My favourite part about today is when we did the skills session and we had to partner up with new people from other teams. I met two people from Katherine who seemed very nice. I m looking forward to the excursion to the museum even though we go there every year and there are some people in our team who have not been there before. There is a crocodile there names Sweetheart and I can t wait to see it. I was very surprised at the sugar session because I didn t expect how much sugar was in the flavoured milk. I will now try to rethink my drink.
06 Years & Under Day Wednesday June nd REGION TEAM: Julia Van Den Berg and Maya Kruger: This morning we did a skills session with Pat Coburn from Tennis NT which I really enjoyed because we got to practice our skills and get better at them before our matches. I liked learning about the sugar because it was interesting to see which drinks had more sugar than others. We all thought the redbull had the most but the strawberry milk had more sugar. This year, we are only playing one set per game and I like this format better because we get to play more people. So far we have played well, we won our doubles and I won my singles against the Alice Springs Black team. So far, the tournament is running smoothly and there is a lot more shade than in Palmerston last year which is better. KATHERINE REGION TEAM: Teri Mlilo and Summer Lowe: Today at Tennis we got to meet some new people from Darwin Region and Alice Springs. I ve liked playing against different people. Also being in a new place other than Katherine is such a good feeling and a good change/scenery. It s been really good to play against people here who are good spirited because If you happen to lose they don t make you feel bad about it. Our team has come up with some strategies and tactics. This has been really good as it has brought our team together. I look forward to the rest of the tournament and having fun. REGION TEAM: Liam Coach and Ryan Cook: This morning we had a sugar PD and learnt about how much sugar is in drinks. Then we did a skills session learning about wide and low base and did drills about moving around the court and side to side. We played PARRS this morning. We played some good points. We did win 6 4 but it wasn t our best tennis. I am really looking forward to playing against the Darwin Region because there are some players that I know in that team from other tournaments that I have played in.
06 Years & Under Day Wednesday June nd ARNHEM REGION TEAM: Lachlan Connell and Oliver Davey: Last night when we arrived in Darwin we went to King Pin to have some Dinner and play some games. We are staying at Kormilda College whilst in Darwin and there is no aircon but at night it gets really cold. There are 5 of us in a room. I have won all of my games so far today and I definitely played my best. We are lucky enough to have nice sunny weather to play tennis and are versing the Katherine team next. After the museum today we are going to go back to king pin and play laser tag. We are super excited to go.
06 Years & Under Day Thursday June rd Excursion Day Highlights The highlight for the excursion yesterday was looking at all the big boats and the big crocodile. Student Tennis Tales PARRS REGION TEAM: Riley Tripelett and Oscar Russell: It s been good to play new people because I made a new friend from Alice Springs named Lachlan. I have improved my serve from the mix and match games we did this morning and have played some very close games in singles. We had lunch as a group and we ate a roll, muesli bar, some shapes and a juice. The PARRS, Arnhem, Katherine, Darwin and Alice Springs Officials played doubles against each other during lunch and all of the students got to watch. This was funny because my mum and coach was one of the people playing. It was funny watching Daniel Parker serve and all the students cheering. I am looking forward to seeing who wins and who gets in the Bruce Cup team. REGION TEAM: Clancy McCormick: This morning I have lost both of my matches. I didn t think I played that well in the doubles but I had a much better game in my singles and was a big improvement, even though the score card didn t reflect how well I actually played. This championship has been a good opportunity to meet new people and meet up with some of the friends I have already made from other regions. Nick Sullivan: The tennis championship has been really fun so far. It s been really fun meeting new people that I didn t know before and it s good that Arnhem land gets to come because they haven t been to many sports this year. I look forward to playing the rest of my matches.
06 Years & Under Day Thursday June rd REGION TEAM: Jett Hansen: Yesterday after we finished at the museum I went back home to my billet family s house and played on their tennis court. We then cooled off and went swimming in their pool afterwards. I was also lucky enough to go to my cousin s house in the city to watch the State of Origin and my team won. I have played doubles today and we won 6. We have been cheering for our Alice Springs teams. The weather today is much cooler than yesterday so it makes it easier to play. Archie Donohue: After tennis yesterday I got to go to soccer training with some of the Darwin and PARRS kids. I really enjoyed the sugar PD yesterday and this morning we did a mix and match serving activity, we had to serve the balls to try and hit our bags that were sitting in the service box. If we hit the bag we got to remove it from the court and the aim was to have no bags left, demonstrating accuracy with our serve. ARNHEM REGION TEAM: Jaxon Garrahy and Tom Jackson: When we arrived at the Gardens Tennis Centre we warmed up on the courts and we did the mix and match. The mix and match was fun because it helped me to aim with my serving and people game me some tips to improve my aim and I got to meet some new people. Our tennis has improved as a group over the last days and we have been doing really well with our games. Out of all the games we have played we have won all of them overall. Last night we went to laser tag and it was awesome. Today my legs are a bit sore. Tonight we are going to the Casuarina Shopping Centre to check out the shops. KATHERINE REGION TEAM: Ethan Harris: It has been so fun so far, especially with the sugar PD yesterday and the skills development. The mix and match was really good this morning and being able to meet new people and see others that we have met before from last year or the Katherine Open. I ve been staying with friends at the esplanade which is really good as it is very close to the tennis courts. I think our team has been playing really well together and yesterday we won most of our games. Eoin McMahon: This morning we are back at the Gardens Tennis Centre and its much cooler today. It has been fun so far and we got to mix in with people from the other regions in a mix n match activity. I have done this activity before with Pat in Katherine so I knew exactly what to do, so that made it more fun and a bit easier. I have been playing my best and really enjoying the tennis.
06 Years & Under Day Friday June 4 th Student Tennis Tales KATHERINE REGION TEAM: Eugene Bolton and Dawnellen Batkin: The sportsmanship at this championship event has been really good, which makes me feel happy and excited to play tennis. I have really enjoyed mixing with the other teams because they are competitive and have all been really friendly and nice. I am looking forward to heading home after the closing ceremony so I can sleep in my own bed. I am looking forward to the closing ceremony so we can congratulate people on their efforts this week. By watching other people play I have become more confident in my backhand and overall my skills have improved because I have had the chance to play more tennis. It has been really fun. ARNHEM REGION TEAM: Daniel Connell: Yesterday we played against all teams and came out on top. It was a lot of fun. We went shopping at Casuarina yesterday afternoon and I bought a new hat. My favourite thing from this championship has been meeting new people from the other teams. I have really enjoyed playing against Katherine because they are really nice and show great sportsmanship. I am looking forward to the closing ceremony this afternoon and seeing which teams are the winners. REGION TEAM: Tom Van Haaren and Roxanne Lillico: It s been a pretty good experience and there has been some good sportsmanship and rivalry between the teams. Everyone has been keeping their cool in the matches. It s really good that there are scoreboards on each court so we don t lose track of the score and there is plenty of iced water in the eskies for when we finish our games. There is plenty of shade for each of the regions so we can rest when we have finished and not have to sit in the sun. My highlight has been seeing the other kids from the other places I rarely go to and seeing my friends from Darwin. It s been good to meet some new people also. I m looking forward to hearing who has won and who has been selected because every kid has worked hard with their tennis.
06 Years & Under Day Friday June 4 th REGION TEAM: Hamzah Elmaghraby: I have played well throughout the competition because my forehand has been really good and has gotten better. I ve really liked the snacks we have had for morning teas each day because one of the boy s grandma cooked potou for us. There have been some really nice people from the other regions here at the event which makes it an enjoyable and fun experience. PARRS REGION TEAM: Corey Pollock and William O Donnell: I have enjoyed all the challenging matches that I have had to play. This year the tennis is different because it is at the Gardens which gives us more space. I m really glad to be representing PARRS and I feel very special wearing our team shirt. I m also really glad that Div is playing with a hard ball this year. I was really happy to use my brand new tennis racquet at this championship. I can t wait to see who gets selected to represent the NT at the Bruce Cup. Overall my experience over the days has been great and I have only lost match.
