1 2017 CAPTAIN'S MEETING NOTES (Mixed 18 & Over Championships) Welcome Congratulations and welcome to the Mixed 18 & Over Sectional Championships. USTA League in the Pacific Northwest has over a 34,000 participants. You are a very elite tennis population and should be proud of the accomplishment of getting to sectionals!! Outdoor Site Highlights Tennis Hill water, ice, bananas, restrooms North Courts water, ice, bananas, portable restrooms or walk to Woodlands Golf Course (about a 5- minute walk) Athletic Trainer available at both sites. They can tape, provide medical assistance, evaluation and treatment of injuries, application of first aid and recommendation for exercise or physical measures for minor injuries. They do not offer massages. If needed, they will perform different massage techniques as part of a treatment regimen but not as a stand alone service. Please go see them if you need any help. If you cannot find them, come to the tournament desk to inquire. Warm-Up Courts Must be reserved with Sunriver Homeowners Association at (541)

Be very mindful of bikes, walkers, kids, dogs, etc. Very busy time of year! Only park in designated paved parking areas. No parking on sides or roads or unpaved areas. Police will issue parking tickets. If there are no parking spots available at Tennis Hill, there is another parking spot by the pickleball courts just a block away. Please pick up all trash on and off courts and dispose of properly. Remember we are guests of SROA! Weather Update Weather looks great! 2017 Sectional Changes No more player party so you get an extra night to party with your teammates in your house! o Instead, Village Bar & Grill is offering just sectional players Happy Hour drinks at ALL hours and for those under 21, they will provide you with ½ off appetizers. Only those under 21 can take advantage of ½ appetizers and only those 21 or over can take advantage of Happy Hour drinks. o Rat Hole Brewery will offer 75 cents off Micro Brews and Well Drinks o Wear your Sectional Championship T-shirt or show your USTA Membership ID card to take advantage of deal. Glass trophies for winners and finalists for all rostered players (better trophies!) More availability of trainers and staff (better service!) Pre match instructions: Line-Up Cards now given out at tournament desk. o Double check line-up card before turning it in o All players need should be on site ready to play before turning in line-up o Once line-up is turned in, there are no changes Page 5 of 5

3 o Be sure to write legibly and do not use nicknames or shortened versions of names please be consistent with the roster names when completing the scorecard/lineup Report to tournament desk 30 minutes before scheduled time of match and submit scorecard/line-up. o The 30 minutes is highly recommended to keep matches moving so we don t get behind. The default clock does not start until the actual match time or when a court is available, which ever is later. Matches will be called on a followed by basis captains and their teams must keep in touch with the tournament desk in case their matches can be called earlier than the scheduled time. Scoretenders/scorekeepers must be used and you will be told by the tournament director which side of the scoretenders/keepers to use as each team s match is called. Post match instructions: Winner must report scores and return balls and opponents please confirm scores. Both team captains must sign scorecard after all team matches have been completed. Standings/Scores These will not be posted on site. You can access the up-to-date standings and scores on tennislink.usta.com using your mobile device, tablet, or computer. Instructions will be available at each tournament desk if needed. If you look online and see an error in the scorecard, text or call TD to let him know. FINALS We will get matches in as soon as we can so you know who wins each flight. Flight winners will play each other in the Finals. Once both flight winners are determined in each division, the primary and secondary contacts from each team will be texted confirmation of the Finals match. The Sectional Champion will receive awards, a Championship banner, and of course an automatic birth into the Mixed 18 & Over National Championships to be played this fall. National Championships are all same weekend (November 3-5) at Mobile Tennis Center in Mobile, AL; Court Surface: Hard Players must have 3 matches, 1 can be a default, to qualify for National Championship Remember, whichever team wins will have to move up or split up next year! T-SHIRTS All t-shirt exchanges can be done at North Courts only.

If you did not, then you can opt in with the code PNW M18 to The USTA website and TennisLink will be down on Thursday, July 19. It should be back up early Friday morning. Social Media Contest: Want to win a $100 Tennis Warehouse Gift Card? Check in on Facebook or Instagram using #PNWSectionals. We are looking for your best off-court photo (preferably a fun shot with your team). Our USTA staff will pick our favorite photo from the event and give away a prize to the winner. Sportsmanship: We want to hear great stories of sportsmanship this weekend. TD has some pins to give out to players who show great sportsmanship. Each tournament desk has a sheet you can fill out to nominate a player. T-Shirt Design Contest Winner: A special shout-out to Hoover Li of Portland, OR - he was the winner of our T-shirt design contest this year. We received many great entries. Captain Check-In Reminder to stop by SHARC to pick up your captain bag, extra local league awards, folder, and other important information on Thursday, July 20. You can come anytime between 6:00-8:00pm to do this. So stop by when you first arrive in Sunriver, or come by after dinner whatever works best with your schedule, as long as it s between 6-8pm. When you get to SHARC, let the front desk know you are there for the USTA Check-In, and they will buzz you into the meeting room area to the left of the desk. NO ON COURT OFFICIALS No on court officials this year. Tournament Site Staff will be working the desk and roaming the courts helping make sure we stay on time and there are no issues. If questions come up, please flag down a staff person in a bright green STAFF shirt. They can contact the TD or Referee if necessary. They can also help get line assistants if needed. They are not supposed to help with lines, foot faults, etc. If any line call issues, Line Assistants can be called (1 rep from each team) and stand at the net post. They cannot make a line call or foot fault call. They can confirm or over-rule a line call when asked Page 5 of 5

5 by a player. They can confirm an egregious foot fault. Line Assistants may not interpret any other rule of tennis and should stand quietly at both ends of the net. If two Line Assistants disagree on a call a let is played. Edwin Jaffarian, Head Referee, will be available to answer general tennis rule questions or concerns. He will not be roving on Friday and Saturday, but he will for Sunday Finals. He may also go on court at his discretion at whatever site he is at. Should you need some help about a rule clarification please stop play, find a tournament staff person, and they will contact me (TD) or Edwin for clarification.
