FIRST-TIME MASTERS 1000 FINALISTS SEEK CINCY TITLE No. 7 seed Grigor Dimitrov and unseeded Nick Kyrgios will meet at the Western & Southern Open on Sunday in the biggest final of their respective careers. Not since Guillermo Canas defeated Andy Roddick at 2002 Toronto have two first-time ATP Masters 1000 finalists met for an ATP Masters 1000 title. The Bulgarian and Aussie are also contesting the first ATP Masters 1000, Nitto ATP Finals or Grand Slam championship match between players born in the 1990s. Dimitrov lost three ATP Masters 1000 and two Grand Slam semi-finals before breaking through Saturday with a 7-6(4), 7-6(10) win over John Isner. The 26-year-old has been broken once all week, posting four straight wins for the first time since starting the season Dimitrov has won one ATP World Tour 500 and five ATP World Tour 250 titles, while Kyrgios has won one ATP World Tour 500 and two ATP World Tour 250 titles. Both Dimitrov and Kyrgios are 23-6 on hard courts in 2017, tying them with Roger Federer and Jack Sock for most wins on the surface this season. Kyrgios, who also won his semi-final in two tiebreakers, bids to become the first unseeded Cincinnati champion in the Open Era and the first unseeded ATP Masters 1000 champion since David Nalbandian at 2007 Paris. The World No. 23 would be the lowest-ranked Cincinnati champion since No. 49 Tom Gorman in 1975 and ATP Masters 1000 champion since No. 26 Ivan Ljubicic at 2010 Indian Wells. Kyrgios, 22, is the youngest Cincinnati finalist since Novak Djokovic in 2009 and would be the youngest Cincinnati champion since Andy Murray one year earlier. No. 3 seeds Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares face No. 5 seeds Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut in a doubles final featuring the last two US Open champions. Either Murray or Mahut will win his 20th ATP World Tour doubles title. Murray also seeks his first ATP Masters 1000 title. Herbert and Mahut are 5-1 in ATP Masters 1000 finals, including a title last week in Montreal. SURPRISE SEMI-FINALS TO PRODUCE NEW CINCY CHAMPION A new Western & Southern Open champion will be crowned among No. 7 seed Grigor Dimitrov, No. 14 seed John Isner and unseeded players Nick Kyrgios and David Ferrer. Isner and Ferrer have played for the Cincinnati title before, finishing as runners-up in 2013 and 2014 respectively. Dimitrov and Kyrgios, on the other hand, have never reached an ATP Masters 1000 final. Isner and Dimitrov will meet in Saturday s first semi-final. Neither man has lost a set this week, with Isner s dominance dating back exactly one month. The Newport and Atlanta champion is 12-1 in matches and 24-2 in sets since July 19, holding in 134 of 137 service games (98%), saving 14 of 17 break points (82%) and hitting 238 aces and 27 double faults (9-to-1 ratio). Isner is 3-5 lifetime in ATP Masters 1000 semi-finals, while Dimitrov is 0-3. In the 2016 Cincinnati semi-finals, Dimitrov held two game points for a 5-2 third-set lead before falling to eventual champion Marin Cilic. Kyrgios faces Ferrer with a spot in his first final of 2017 on the line. The Aussie eliminated No. 1 seed Rafael Nadal on Friday, making 2017 Cincinnati the first ATP Masters 1000 event without a Big Four semi-finalist and finalist since 2012 Paris. Ferrer was the 2012 Paris champion, marking the only ATP Masters 1000 title won by any of the Cincinnati semi-finalists. The 35-year-old dropped to a 12-year low No. 46 in the Emirates ATP Rankings on July 17. Ferrer is 12-2 since then, and this week became the oldest Cincinnati semi-finalist since 1970 champion Ken Rosewall. Four of the last five Grand Slam champions are represented in the doubles semi-finals on Grandstand. Wimbledon champions Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo meet US Open champions Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares. Then, Roland Garros champions Ryan Harrison and Michael Venus take on 2016 Wimbledon champions Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut. DOUBLE-HEADER AWAITS NADAL ON NO. 1 ANNIVERSARY It took Rafael Nadal a record 160 weeks to rise from No. 2 to No. 1 in the Emirates ATP Rankings on August 18, Nine years later, Nadal is back at the same event on the same day of the week that he became the top men s tennis player in the world. Nadal defeated Nicolas Lapentti in the Western & Southern Open quarter-finals on Friday, August 1, 2008 to guarantee that he would pass Roger Federer in the rankings later that month. The Spaniard clinched the No. 1 ranking once again in Cincinnati this week when Federer withdrew from the tournament due to a back injury. For Nadal to return to the Cincinnati semi-finals, he must defeat fellow Spanish left-hander Albert Ramos-Vinolas this afternoon and either Nick Kyrgios or Ivo Karlovic this evening. Karlovic led Kyrgios 4-3 and the Spaniards had not begun their third-round match when rain ended play on Thursday. Should Karlovic beat Kyrgios, the 38-year-old will be the oldest Cincinnati quarter-finalist in the Open Era and the oldest ATP Masters 1000 quarter-finalist since the series started in Already in the quarter-finals are Americans John Isner and Jared Donaldson, who will meet on Center Court. QUERREY AMONG SIX AMERICANS IN ACTION IN CINCINNATI 1) Six Americans, led by World No. 20 Sam Querrey and #NextGenATP wild cards Stefan Kozlov and Tommy Paul, take the court for their opening-round matches Monday at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati. 2) Querrey, the No. 15 seed, begins his bid for a third ATP World Tour title this year and second of the summer hard-court swing when he meets the 19-year-old Kozlov on Center Court Monday afternoon. Last year, Querrey defeated Kozlov in the QF at 's-hertogenbosch on grass in their only previous meeting on the ATP World Tour. This will be Querrey's 11th appearance in Cincinnati, reaching the QF in 2007 (l. to Blake) for his best performance here, and is lifetime. He swept all nine of his matches in Mexico this year, capturing his 9th and 10th career ATP World Tour titles at Acapulco (d. Nadal) and Los Cabos (d. Kokkinakis), respectively. Last week, Querrey lost to Kevin Anderson in the R16 at ATP Masters 1000 Montreal. Kozlov, ranked No. 133 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, is making his main draw debut in Cincinnati after failing to get out of qualifying in He advanced to the R16 at s-hertogenbosch as a wild card (d. Brown, l. to Karlovic) and London/Queen s Club as a qualifier (d. Johnson, l. to Cilic), but is just 2-8 overall on the ATP World Tour in ) American qualifier Christopher Eubanks, coming off a career week in his home city of Atlanta last month, meets Frenchman Gael Monfils for the first time in the featured evening match on Center Court. The 21-year-old Eubanks advanced to the QF in Atlanta (d. Fritz in R32, Donaldson in R16, l. to Harrison in QF) in his first ATP World Tour event of 2017 and third of his career, all in Atlanta. He reached a career-high No. 348 in the Emirates ATP Rankings on July 31 and is currently ranked No. 374, the lowest-ranked player in the field. Monfils, a quarter-finalist here in 2011 (l. to No. 1 Djokovic), is 10-8 lifetime in Cincinnati. The World No. 21 bounced back from a R32 loss in Washington (l. to 200th-ranked qualifier Bhambri) by reaching the R16 last week at the ATP Masters 1000 Montreal (d. Nishikori in R32, l. to Bautista Agut). 4) A second all-american first-round matchup is slated to kick off action on the Grandstand Court when Donald Young faces Tommy Paul for the first time on the ATP World Tour. Young is bidding for his first match win in four tries at Cincinnati (2008, l. to Monfils; 2010, l. to Gulbis; 2012, l. to Levine). Ranked No. 57 in the Emirates ATP Rankings, Young has dropped three of his last four matches since defeating Tim Smyczek in the 1R at Atlanta (l. to Lacko in R16 at Atlanta; d. Smyczek in 1R, l. to Nishikori in R32 at Washington; l. to Paire in R64 at ATP Masters 1000 Montreal). The 20-year-old Paul is competing in Cincinnati for the first time following back-to-back QF appearances in Atlanta and Washington. He reached his first career ATP World Tour QF in Atlanta (d. Chung in R32, d. Jaziri in R16, l. to Muller in QF) and followed that up by reaching the QF in Washington (d. No. 17 Pouille in R32, No. 21 Muller in R16, l. to No. 9 Nishikori in QF). Paul reached a career-high No. 174 in the Emirates ATP Rankings on August 7. 5) The second afternoon match on the Grandstand Court features Fabio Fognini taking on Daniil Medvedev in a first-time encounter. Fognini advanced to the QF at Cincinnati in 2014 (l. to Raonic) and is 4-6 lifetime. The Italian No. 1 won his fifth ATP World Tour title in Gstaad (d. Hanfmann) last month and followed that with a SF showing in Kitzbuehel (l. to eventual champion Kohlschreiber). Medvedev, making his Cincinnati debut, advanced to the QF in Washington (d. Dimitrov in R16, l. to eventual champion A. Zverev in QF) but fell in the 1R to Adrian Mannarino last week at the ATP Masters 1000 Montreal. The 21-year-old Russian advanced to his 1st ATP World Tour SF and final at Chennai (d. Sela after saving 1 MP, l. to Bautista Agut) in January.
