1 The United States Tennis Association (USTA) in cooperation with the Professional Tennis Registry, United States Professional Tennis Association and the National Recreation and Park Association offer new and existing teachers a competitive edge in their community when they participate in a USA Tennis Recreational Coach Workshop. At a Recreational Coach Workshop, a specially trained certified teaching professional will lead active on-court sessions on: Running effective team practices The rally based approach to coaching Teaching large groups Proper use of teaching aids All while placing emphasis on the fun and social aspects of tennis! If you hire seasonal tennis instructors, parent and high school coaches, others interested in teaching new players of all ages, then hosting a Recreational Coach Workshop is perfect for your tennis program and your community. The USTA will conduct a limited number of these workshops nationwide and applications are filled on a first come, first served basis. 2 In order to encourage the development of tennis, the United States Tennis Association, in cooperation with the Professional Tennis Registry, United States Professional Tennis Association and the National Recreation and Park Association, is pleased to conduct a nationwide training program for people teaching and coaching players at the recreational level. If your city, park, or community tennis association is interested in hosting one of these workshops, you should complete the attached Host Site Application and return it to the USTA National office. Please note: Dates and locations will be scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis, although we will attempt to cover the nation geographically. We strongly suggest a minimum of 25 people for the workshop; (This number provides a realistic example of how large groups can be taught and managed. It also justifies the expense of providing a national trainer.) This workshop serves as the required on-court portion of the Human Kinetics online course, Coaching Youth Tennis. The USTA will pay the host site for conducting the workshop based on the number of completed participant evaluations returned to the USTA. 6-hour workshops: 12-hour workshops: $10.00 reimbursement per participant $15.00 reimbursement for USA Tennis NJTL workshop participants $12.50 per participant $17.50 for NJTL participants WORKSHOPS Each city can apply for one or more of these two courses: A. The 6-hour workshop is an excellent introduction to the topics listed below and is a valuable refresher for those with teaching experience but who seek more current methods and effective tools. The six-hour course will provide a basic overview of the following topics: Large Group Teaching for Youth and Adults Team Practice for Youth and Adults Tennis Technique Current Trends and Progressions Teaching with the Rally Approach Effective Use of Teaching Aids

3 B. The 12-hour program will last two days. Each participant will cover the basic 6-hour material and have the opportunity to practice teach and role play in adult groups consisting of other peer teachers. TRAINERS Our faculty of National Trainers is based throughout the country. The USTA will assign trainers based on reasonable time and travel requirements. If a host site makes a special request for a trainer outside the general geographic area, they may be responsible for the travel cost difference. A complete list of National Trainers is available upon request. MATERIALS Host sites will receive certain materials for use and distribution depending on the make up of the group of participants. 4 HOSTING YOUR WORKSHOP When your application is received, your date will be confirmed and a National Trainer will be assigned. We will send you a promotional flyer that you can customize and print to promote your workshop, along with a planning chart and timeline to assist you in preparing for your workshop. We suggest that you prepare a registration form that offers a discount for early registration. For example: provide a discounted rate of $20.00 if registration is received before May 1st (or 21 days prior to your scheduled date) and $30.00 for registration after the May 1st deadline. This policy will encourage early registration and allow you to make proper plans for materials and facilities. The length of the workshop should be six hours dedicated to on-court training. Any time for lunch should not be included in your total contact hours. We encourage host sites to provide lunch for participants and include the cost as part of the registration fee. EXPENSES The host site is responsible for all local workshop expenses. The workshop coordinators can be compensated for their organization and administrative time. Based on the number of participants, the coordinators could retain what is remaining after all expenses are paid. The USTA will pay the trainer honorarium and expenses for workshops of 25 or more pre-registered participants. If you will not meet this 25 person minimum, you must contact the USTA at least 21 days in advance to cancel the workshop so the trainer can be notified in time to make the appropriate travel and scheduling changes. Any changes after that date must be approved by the USTA National Office.

5 Things to consider before deciding on your workshop date, time, and location: 1. Will you be able to secure 25 workshop participants? 2. Will you have a registration table set up with participant kits and name badges prepared? 3. Is there an indoor facility as backup in case of rain? 4. Is there an area to get people out of the sun and off their feet for breaks, discussion periods, and lunch? 5. Does your date conflict with any major event in your community? 6. Are water and restroom facilities close by? 7. Will you provide lunch?
