Find us on Facebook! Panther Tennis ISB Panther Tennis is a year-long program taking place over 3 sessions. Each session is 8-12 weeks long. Individual training/lessons may also be scheduled. The training takes place on site at the International School of Bangkok. Panther Tennis News Season 16/17-1, Issue 3 Noop s Notes October 4, 2016 Dear Players and Families! Time is going so fast and we have already passed the half-way mark of Season 1. Unfortunately, there have been several class cancellations during the past two weeks due to rain. To make up for missed lessons, players are welcome to join additional classes during the coming weeks. We ask though, that you inform us ahead of time, so we can make sure there are enough coaches available. Both Oct 1 st and Oct 8 th are big tennis days for us, as our U13 boys and girls are participating in both BISAC singles and team tournament. The U13 Boys team tournament will be held at ISB on Oct 8 th. This is a great opportunity to come out and support our Panther players and to watch many good players from the region s many international schools. Inspiration We will be using all of our courts on Oct 8 th ; the A team tournament will be at the 7-courts complex and the B team tournament at the new sports complex. Coach Noop
By Coach Chairat Learn-to-Play During last week the children have learned to understand serving (drop-hit serve, volley serve). They did very well! This week we continue working with the serve and will advance to serving by using the side stance, tossing, making a contact point up high and follow-through. At the end, we will simulate a game and correct the players to help with technique and mental skills. Competitive By Coach Net & Coach Noop Mini & Cubs During the 6 th week, we will be focusing on how to improve the tactics during points. We are preparing for the tournament on Oct 15 th, so that the players are able to think before playing each point. This way the game will be more fun as Nunc well as more cursus challenging magna for them. quis We will also start using the orange balls during practice. Jr Panther & Elite We are focusing on how to improve and correct some general technique for the players. For each technical skill, it takes reminding and time. Each time we correct, we make it clear what should be changed and why. We are then working on connecting these technical changes to their game so they don t lose self-confidence when making changes. Players trying out for Varsity tennis are working on consistency and better placement. 3 Player Profiles 1. Name, grade and years playing tennis? Mathieu Le Feurve, 11 th grade, playing regularly for 6 yrs. 2. What do you like most about playing tennis? Tennis is a sport I can play for the rest of my life. I enjoy the pride and the sensations I receive after a satisfying tennis session. I also like how tennis is an individual sport as I am therefore completely involved during play and am alone struggling for control of the ball. After moving to Thailand, I decided I wanted to be proficient in one sport and that had to be tennis. 3. How did you start playing tennis? When I was 5 yrs old and we moved to Washington DC and my parents didn t know what to do with me, I spend my summer weeks at tennis camps. First at Sidwell International school and then at St Albans. It was though, in Belgium a few years later that I started playing regularly. 4. What is your favorite subject in school? I like more mathematical oriented subjects including physics and mathematics. I also enjoy economics as it incorporates math as well as social studies, another area that I enjoy. 5. What other sports or activities do you do? Another sport I love and am quite good at is skiing. With my family, we usually go skiing every year. The downside is that it is complicated to go skiing when we live in Thailand. There is no ski slope at my doorstep, like there are tennis courts. 6. Where have you lived so far in your life? Belgium, WA DC, Thailand. Summers in France & Italy. Competitive: Panther Elite Coaches Motivation: Mathieu is the one player who keeps practicing w PT almost 3 yrs. Upon return this season, he has shown more confidence, intensity and discipline. We wish him to keep working hard to show us a great tennis Varsity tennis match this year! 7. What makes a good tennis coach? A good coach should be tough, make me run and push my limits. At the same time, a coach should be patient and repeat the same things over and over again until they become routine. A coach should not be viewed as a teacher, but more as someone whom one can rely on at times and still laugh with. 8. What makes a good friend? A good friend is always there when you need him. A friend is supposed to make you laugh, be trustworthy and be someone with a similar personality as you so that you can both relate to each other and enjoy similar activities. 3
Player Profiles 1. Name, grade and years playing tennis. Emina Udagawa, grade 3, 2 months. 2. What do you like most about playing tennis? Playing matches. 3. How did you start playing tennis? My Dad plays tennis. 4. What is your favorite subject in school? Why? Reading because it is fun. 5. What other sports or activities do you do? Ballet, piano, choir, Orff, Japanese. 6. Where have you lived so far in your life? Born in Thailand. I visit family in Japan and America every summer. 7. What makes a good tennis coach? Helping students when they make mistakes. 8. What makes a good friend? Someone who you play with and is nice to you. Learn-to-Play: Grade 3-5 Coaches Motivation: Emina is a new player and after she took some time to investigate the group, I can say she is very confident and has a good attitude for playing tennis. I hope she will be the player who can develop to the next level soon. Meanwhile at the LTAT (Lawn & Tennis Association of Thailand) Our coaches are becoming ITF Level 1 Certified! Which coaches can you spot? 4
U13 Girls By Pajarachuta Harinsuit With 32 girls tennis players at Harrow this past Saturday for U13 Bisac Singles Tournament, our ISB U13 girls team had good experience playing against many other teams such as BPS, SHW, NIST, HARROW, RIS and KIS. Our girls gained points in every game we played and demonstrated outstanding skills. Our players were very cheerful, worked hard and they supported each other which showed the great spirit of our team. Coach Net was there with us and gave supports to our players, he made sure that everyone was ready to play. The ISB U13 girls who participated are: Min, Paritta, Renata, Jinjutha and Carole with their esteemed Coach Nett. Way to go girls! ISB is proud of you! By Hilde Tellman & Yukiko Saito U13 Boys 5 On October 1 st, our ISB U13 Boys participated in the BISAC singles tournament at British Patana School with 75 participants from 6 international schools. All the ISB U13 boys demonstrated great sportsmanship and provided the supporters with wonderful tennis. They cheered, congratulated and supported each other like true teammates. Besides a great opportunity to play against fantastic opponents, the day gave the boys a chance for teambuilding. The strength of this year s team is their tenacity and endurance. Andreas moved very easy around the court and looked focused and ready to win his matches. Hiroki had some very long rallies, where he most of the time won the point. He never gave up. Victor s volleys were strong and his placement of the ball made the opponent run. Teetouch sat up his racket fast and repeatedly demonstrated his great serve. TT finished 3 rd in his box! Ken was fighting to get every ball. His forehand was definitely strong today! Leo showed some great ground strokes and did very well on his serves. Mee had some excellent winning points and stayed focused during his match. Samuel kept fighting on court, even when he injured his foot. Impressive!! Amazing ground strokes, high and deep. Non had good winner shots and he made his opponent run a lot. He kept calm in the important points. Chad s tactic was to hit deep and if the opponent return short, he finished the point by putting the ball away. Had some really nice and long rallies. All in all, the boys had a great day. They played against some of the best in Bangkok in their age group giving them the opportunity to really improve their tennis game. Well done boys! ISB is proud of you!
Panther Tennis Parent Committee Dear All, For the past the few weeks, the PTPC and Bob have been busy seeking candidate choices for our Tennis Advisor position, and also defining the scope of work we would like to see achieved. Tennis Tidbits Choosing Raquets for Kids Summarized from: tenniscompanion.org While choosing a raquet for kids is less complex than for adults, it s still not an exact science. There are some basic guidelines one can use. To get started use these basic height and age recommendations: Age Height Racquet Length 6-8 yrs in 23 in 9-10 yrs in 25 in 10 & up 55 in + 26 in You can prevent injury by not having a racquet that is too large. Grip Sizes Grip size refers to the circumference of the racquet handle. It is fairly simple for kids as most manufacturers produce a 4 in grip size as standard for all kids racquets. If you think the grip is too small, the easiest is to simply add an overgrip. Find the full article here Part of this research process included Bob and us "pounding the pavement" to look at how some of the successful local tennis academies are run and organized. We talked to two competition-level academies; a respected Japanese group in the Sukhumvit area and an American-style camp not far from Nichada, both who were very gracious in sharing valuable insights with us. Bob also attended a weekday-morning adult tennis camp at BPS to learn more, as we hope to start a similar activity for our Panther Tennis parent players here on our courts soon! Stay tuned as we will have more updates. Good to Know! Andy Chan Oct 6 & 7 th Panther Tennis groups as usual, despite parent-teacher conferences. Oct 8 th ISB will host the U13 Boys Team Tennis tournament and the Panther Tennis group classes are cancelled. Oct and Oct Panther Tennis is on break and group classes are cancelled. Nov Panther Tennis will move to the uncovered courts near Field D, as Panther Swim Fest will be going on. Contact Panther Tennis panthert@isb.ac.th Panther Tennis ISB 6
