True Tension Professional A *MSRP $3, *The True Tension Professional is a model that I have modified to include sixteen (16) racquet supports. In addition to the supports I am using clamps with no slots to minimize string damage. As of this writing it is unclear if the basic machine is still available. Page 1 of 1
Mounting System The True Tension machine uses a solid annular plate on which several racquet supports are mounted. This eliminates any racquet distortion and allows for installation tensions of about 85% of that requited on other machines. The standard configuration is four (4) supports. On the Professional model there are sixteen (16) supports with two (2) of those being outside the head. This position eliminates any rotation of the racquet when installing the final cross strings at the throat of the racquet. Racquet Rulers are affixed to the plate which makes centering the racquet precise. The side supports are padded where they contact the racquet. The supports at 6 & 12 are wide and use a screw down cap to lock the racquet firmly in place. These supports are also on the plate and are easily moved to accommodate any racquet. The plate is mounted on a solid metal tray which rotates on a bearing on the stand. The support assembly is very heavy. I have a similar machine (Professional) that has a plastic tray that I used for tournament stringing because of the lighter weight. The tournament machine is currently fitted with the newest model of the Wise 2086 Tension Head. Setup is quick and secure. The support is most critical. Page 2 of 2
Tensioning The tension head is a crank activated system that includes a pre-stretch feature in pounds as opposed to a percentage of tension setting. This allows for more precise tensioning and stability for each string. The tension is set using a crank type knob with an indicator on the top of the tension head in both pounds and kilograms. Also on the tension indicator is the corresponding setting on conventional machines. So, if the reference tension is 60 the True Tension system will be set at 51. My Racquet Record software calculates the correct tension settings for both the main and cross string based on racquet specifications. Setting the tension is as easy as turning the crank. Setting the pre-stretch is accomplished with a smaller knob and dedicated indicator. The tension head is of a self aligning design that clamps only as tight as required for the string being tensioned. The tension head is machined with a pattern that precludes any string slippage. The tension head has a small knob that makes one handed operation easy. The tension head is locked by two (2) locking pawls, one at pre-stretch and one at full tension. These locks contact a large diameter wheel that is designed to pull the string at the correct speed. This is important with some newer string materials. The tension spring is of the tension type which means it gets longer as tension is increased. Many lock-out machines utilize compression springs that are not as precise and/or durable. Do to the lack of racquet distortion the cross string tension is set at about 70% of main string tension. A major feature of the tensioning system is the string guide capability. This guide directs the string straight from the grommet reducing friction to nearly zero! Page 3 of 3
This design eliminates the problems encountered when stringing racquets with large hole openings, i.e. Prince O Port Technology. Page 4 of 4
String Clamps String clamps are machined aluminum and come in several configurations. I use clamps with no slots (fingers) for main string installation. With a solid clamp very little clamping force is required. This is desired when stringing natural gut and many multi-filament strings. The clamps for cross strings come in two (2) configurations, one with four (4) broad teeth and one with five (5) narrow teeth. The string pattern dictates which clamp will be used. The clamps are machined with a non-slip pattern. The clamps ride on glide bars that are attached to the top support plate making the distance from the glide bar to the string very short which contributes to stiffness of the clamp unit and no drawback. A cross string glide bar is required. Clamp pressure is adjusted with a hex wrench, however, the design of the clamp makes adjustments infrequent. The clamps are the fit into configuration which means the clamp shaft slides into the tubular base. The bumper is very thin and should be replaced with a thicker one if you can. The clamp faces are textured for a firm grip on the string. The locking action is a lock-over type as opposed to a frictional lock. The throw of the paddle is quite long which, until you get used to it, makes you wonder if it is going too far. It is not. The lock is firm but is easily unlocked when wanted. I found the clamps to be very effective and easy to use but adjusting them is an issue when brand new. The adjustment knob is difficult to rotate. Use a piece of old string to adjust clamping force. You probably will not need to make many adjustments, however. Page 5 of 5
Tool Tray The padded 200 square inch tool try is located exactly where it should be. Right in front of you! It is big with plenty of room for anything you need quick at hand. The tool tray is an integral part of the entire system and adds considerable weight to the machine. Table Brake The table brake is simply a set screw that contacts the center tube and locks the table. This is not very fancy but there is very little requirement for it due to the string guide feature. The Machine Stand The machine stand needs some assembly which is easy with the included tools. The assembled stand is a rugged and stable piece four sturdy legs. There is no leveling device on the legs. A piece of advice: set the height as close to your desire height as possible before you put anything else on the stand. It is almost impossible to adjust the height when the table and tension head is sitting on it. Page 6 of 6
Assembly The machine comes in two (2) sturdy boxes. As expected the machine components were very well protected. It is not surprising that you will want to assemble the stand first. Great packaging! There is a small box inside a larger box that contains all the hardware, adaptors, spare contact pads, tools, and the owner s manual. The included tools should be all you need. Other Stuff The True Tension system was designed by John Balaban and I have been using this system for well over twenty (20) years. Certainly I have made some modifications to my machines but generally I have had all these years of trouble free use. The system is different and not for everyone. I have had the opportunity to use the best machines in the world and the True Tension Is one of them. I am not certain of the status of current machine availability. Page 7 of 7

TOTAL RECOVERY Most of the information and images are pretty clear, however, one section of data I take is the Total Recovery data. I believe this is important data because it shows the effect of machine differential when the cross strings are being installed. Why? Here is what I derived from this data: A machine with a broad differential will pull, momentarily, tension to keep the tension head at the tension setting. When this occurs the cross string does not have the restoring force to pull back that tension resulting in a Recovery Total of greater than 100 percent. Remember, that is 100 percent of the width increase so in most cases it will have a minimum effect on the racquet Head Width W/Cross Strings Inches Total Change Total Recovery Cross 4 Installed % Cross 8 Installed % Cross 12 Installed % Cross 16 Installed % Last Cross Installed % Page 10 of 10
