The Committee Mark Russ Chairman, Treasurer and Tournament Officer I was asked to get involved with the Junior County 4 years ago as both my children were playing for the County as well as training to play at the highest level possible. At that time I was Head of Sport at a local school and love all sports. More recently, I was lucky enough to become a house husband as one of my children is home schooled to allow him to train full time for badminton. My life is now almost exclusively taken up with badminton! Not only do I help my children with their badminton career I took on the Chair of the Senior County last year so that we now have a unified approach from Juniors through to Seniors and Veterans. I am passionate about badminton and work tirelessly to pass on my love for the game to as many people, young or old, as possible.
The Committee David Taylor Secretary This is my first season with the committee and I look forward to working with the team to support and grow badminton for the children of sussex. I have spent the last five years sitting in a mixture of too cold or very stuffy sports halls watching badminton. My advice to new parents; get a good cushion and warm jacket! I believe the county should be open, transparent and approachable so please fee free to me at SussexBadSecretary@outlook.com or call me on
The Committee Sara Foster Safeguarding Lead I am a Student Services Director at a local school. As part of this role she is trained to be the Designated Safeguarding Lead (Level 3). As the Safeguarding Lead, I will be helping Sussex Badminton by sharing my knowledge and expertise to help ensure child welfare is at the forefront of every thing we do.
The Committee Claire West Match Secretary I have arranged fixtures for all age groups for Sussex County Juniors since I also arrange additional inter-county quad or 1 to 1 friendly matches to give all squad members the opportunity to play for Sussex and build their tournament confidence and motivation. I enjoy engaging with other fixtures' managers and have built up good relationships with many of them. The main complexity of my job is pin pointing match dates. I have to factor in all the BE, other and even international tournaments to try to ensure I am not excluding any players from competing in external tournaments. I am an avid supporter of Sussex Badminton and enjoy being able to contribute to our children enjoying, thriving and competing in this sport.
The Committee Chris Byerley West Sussex Representative My role on the Sussex Junior Committee is currently West Sussex Representative, but prior to this I was for a time the Chairman of the Committee. I have been a Badminton England qualified coach for 40 years and have run Worthing Juniors for the last 38 years. I started playing badminton when I was 19 and play for Arcadian Badminton Club in the Worthing, Bognor and Brighton leagues as well as playing for Sussex in the Masters. I have enjoyed my years of playing and am pleased to give back to the sport by way of coaching young people. My aim is to help them improve their game, whilst having fun and developing a love for the game.
The Committee Neil Warwick East Sussex Representative & County Development Officer My role on the committee is as Liaison Officer for East Sussex. My responsibility is to ensure information relating to Badminton in Sussex is communicated to Clubs, Coaches and Sport Centres in the East of the County. I am passionate about my sport and want to ensure juniors have the best opportunities to play within our County whatever their level of play. Last year I also took on the role of County Development Officer with the responsibility of developing our younger County players aged under 11. My job is to liaise with coaches and clubs to encourage them to put forward players who they think might benefit from additional practice within our County Junior structure. We know there are good players out there but the job is to find them.
The Coaches Zeyar Win Under 12 s Coach Zeyar Win is a highly experienced Level 3 coach with many years of county junior and senior coaching experience. He returns to the county coaching team this year, taking responsibility for the U12 squad this season. Zeyar is a highly valued tutor and assessors for Badminton England and has delivered many coach education courses throughout Sussex, Kent, Surrey, Essex and Middlesex. Currently Head Coach at The Fast Step Academy, he has worked tirelessly to give children and adults the opportunity to play badminton in a fun learning environment through his network of clubs, schools, adult education and personal coaching.
The Coaches Karen Chapman-Gain Under 14 s Coach From the age of 13 I started to play Senior County Badminton representing Sussex for over twenty years. At the age of 15, I was already playing U18 International Badminton and at that age won my first major international title becoming European Junior Mixed Doubles Champion, which I successfully retained two years later and added the Ladies Doubles title and the team event of which I was a regular member. At the age of 17 I was selected to represent our National Team obtaining my first international cap in Canada and winning my first international title in the ladies doubles. From there I continued to play international badminton for many years obtaining 50 International appearances and travelling the world, it was at this age I suffered a severe knee injury which lead me to specialise in Ladies and Mixed doubles. My most notable achievements would be as follows: Commonwealth Games Mixed Doubles Gold Medallist, Ladies Doubles Bronze Medallist and Team Gold. European Ladies Doubles Gold Medallist. All England Mixed Doubles Runner Up and World Championships Mixed Doubles Bronze Medallist. I was very fortunate then to get involved in coaching and management. Working with our National U18 squad for two years and then getting the opportunity to coach and manage our senior international squads at two Uber Cup Championships and two European Championships. Highlight of that career was being asked to Coach and Manage our 1998 Commonwealth Games team in the four year preparation and competition of which the team were very successful. I feel that I am still privileged to have the opportunity to help the next generation to achieve and enjoy the sport as much as I am still doing.
The Coaches Will Hilton-Jackson Under 16 s Coach My Name is Will Hilton-Jackson and I have been an avid badminton player since I was just nine years old and representing Sussex from ten years old. In preparation for the London 2012 Olympics in June 2009, I was invited to join the High Performance Squad at Wimbledon. Wimbledon was used as one of the Olympics training grounds and I was lucky enough to be a part of, and to train and compete against the UK s best players. I trained full time and pushed my singles career into the next level by finishing in the elite training squad by achieving top 20 in the men s singles category. I have played in many tournaments all over the UK, so bring a wealth of experience to my coaching sessions. I decided to stop playing professionally in 2012 and concentrate on giving back to the young up-andcoming players in Sussex. I have been part of the coaching team at Horsham Arun Performance Centre since 2006 and am now Head Coach. I have also been worked with many schools, colleges and sport centres across the county. It is very rewarding to see the young players come through and develop in their skills and abilities as badminton players. I hope to continue helping players achieve their goals and be successful in the sport and I look forward to working with the coaching team and future squads at Sussex County Junior Badminton.
The Coaches Anna Brownlie Under 18 s Coach I was brought up in a badminton family, so the sport has been a very large part of my life. From an early age I played in Badminton England Tournaments, trained hard and represented my county. Whilst in the Juniors, I represented England in the Four Nations Tournament. Many (many) years ago I played at the All England Badminton Tournament. I qualified for this by winning national grade tournaments played in Wimbedon. As a level two coach, I enjoy coaching at Burgess Hill Juniors. This is my second season coaching the oldest county age group. We finished 9 th in the end of season Inter Counties Tournament (ICT) something to build upon this season!!

Badminton England Tournaments The Shires Badminton League was set up in Until 2002 there were only approximately 8 members of the league, mainly from central England. At the start of the season, a further seven counties were added to the league and by the season the count had risen over twenty-five. This season there are thirty-seven counties competing. During the entire history of the league so far, matches have remained the same, even with the introduction of Rally Point rules, which was adopted in Teams consist of 4 boys and 4 girls, playing a total of 20 matches, each match being the best of 3 games. The contest starts with 4 mixed doubles matches, followed by 4 boys singles and 4 girls singles running concurrently. Each player then plays two level doubles matches (cross over doubles 1v1, 2v2, 1v2, 2v1), making 4 boys doubles and 4 girls doubles and 20 matches in total. The Shires League Finals have taken place during April / May since 2003 and each final has attracted the top eight teams in the league. At first the finals were held at Babington, Leicestershire, but in recent years we have gone for Hertfordshire Sports Village and Walsall University. Dates for this years finals; U12s - 21/05/2017 U14s - 28/05/2017 U16s - 23/04/2017 U18s - 14/05/2017

Heather Olver, Olympian Heather Olver Inspired By Local Sussex Coaches When one of Heather Olver s coaches wore a Team GB top to training many years ago, little did she know it would create a dream that would lead the young badminton star all the way to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Childhood coach ignited dream which led Olver all the way to Rio When one of Heather Olver s coaches wore a Team GB top to training many years ago, little did she know it would create a dream that would lead the young badminton star all the way to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. Olver started playing the sport at the age of six under the guidance of Bruce Peapell at Waldron Junior Badminton Club before becoming part of the Badminton England programme at the age of 11. Now 19 years later, Heathfield s Olver has achieved her dream of qualifying for an Olympic Games and is heading to Brazil alongside her women s doubles partner Lauren Smith Like so many children growing up in East Sussex, Olver s love of badminton was sparked by former Waldron Junior coach Peapell and the world number 25 was among those who recognised the role he played in their lives at the party organised when he retired in Coaching inspiration And the 30-year-old spoke with real passion when she discussed the important role played by the various coaches on her journey to Rio She said: My very first coach at the age of six was Bruce Peapell and he was just fantastic and was so encouraging and made me love the game. I was so fortunate all the way through because I had [world bronze medallist and current Sussex Coach] Karen Chapman and [former England international] Tanya Woodward who were fantastic female coaches that were really helpful.
