The Respnse Frms (questins and puzzles) check yur understanding and appreciatin f the sprt r physical activity. INTRODUCTION Tennis is amng the mst ppular sprts in the United States. It is played by amateurs and prfessinals, children and adults wmen and men.it can be played fr sheer enjyment r in fiercely cmpetitive turnaments, such as the famus Davis Cup, Wightman Cup and the Wimbledn turnament. Like badmintn it requires agility, speed and almst cntinuus mtin n the part f the player. It is ften recmmended as a gd means f aerbic exercise. HISTORY OF TENNIS The game that we knw as "tennis" tday (fficially knwn as "lawn tennis") was created by a British citizen, MajrWalter C. Wingfield, wh intrduced the game t Britain in The fllwing year saw the intrductin f the already-ppular game t America. Hwever, the real histry f tennis apparently ges back far beynd Majr Wingfield's day. A versin f tennis was played in ancient Greece and in France in the 1400s. The first tennis turnament was played at Wimbledn in England in While Wimbledn is still cnsidered the mst famus and prestigius tennis turnament in the wrld, the Davis Cup andwightman Cup turnaments are als imprtant annual events. 2 HOW THE GAME IS PLAYED A tennis game always starts with the serve. The server stands behind the base line n the right side f the curt. The ball is tssed int the air and hit diagnally acrss the net int the ppnent's curt. The ppnent then has t hit the ball after the first bunce, and return it back acrss the net t the server. A "fault" is cmmitted when the server hits the net with the ball r when the ball is hit utside the service curt. The secnd time a server tries t serve and fails, "a duble fault" ccurs. The ppnent autmatically gains a pint after a duble fault. Faults can als ccur when the server tuches the base line r any ther part f the curt with his/her feet while serving. A "let ball" is a serve that tuches the net but lands in the crrect place. This type f ball des nt cunt; the server must serve again. A ball that tuches the net during play is called a"netball." Net balls are legal and must be played. Once the first pint is made, the server then serves frm behind the left base line. The server cntinues until the ppnent wins the serve r until a fault ccurs. The first pint in a tennis game is 15, the secnd is 30 and the third is 40. The final scre (r furth pint) is the GAME POINT. A player must scre fur pints in rder t win a game. In a tie garrue, bth sides r players may scre three pints, r (a 'DEUCE"). If a player r side wins tw mre pints after adeuce, the game is wn. 3 a pint after a deuce, the game returns t again. The scre "LOVE" means zer.if a game has the scre 30-1ve. it means the scre is 30 t zer. Nbdy knws why the term "lve" is used in tennis, but it is generally believed t have riginated frm the French wrd "l'uve," which means "egg." An egg is rund like a circle" hence its assciatin with a zer. /, {, t a E! f lilr- -I- -\- A SET means that ne side r player has wn six games. The winner f the set must win by tw games. A MATCH means that tw ut f three sets have been wn. PLAYING TECHNIQUES FOREHAND DRIVE THE SERVE There are fur types f serves in tennis: the flat serye, the slice serve. the kick serve and the American twist. While the slice is the mst cmmn and effective serve, all fur types f serves demand a cntrlled tss and gd fllw-thrugh. T execute the serve prperly, the playerraises the racquet back t a pint where it reaches ver his r her right shulder. The player's elbw is kept straight in the air. The prper stance is straight, nt bent at the waist. The ball is then tssed up int the air. As the ball cmes dwn, the server mves frward and strikes the ball with the racquet, driving it ver the net tward the ther player r players. This mve is ne f the tw main strkes used fr returning the ball after ne bunce. When the ball appraches the player's racquet-hand side, the frehand drive is usedbasically, as a way f blcking the ball. The wrist maintains a firm psitin and keeps the racquet face pen. All cntact with the ball shuld take place in frnt f the player's bdv. 4 BACKHAND DRIVE This mve is the ther main strke used t return a ball after ne bunce. In the backhand drive, the ball ges t the ppsite side f the racquet hand. The player mves the arm acrss the bdy and, as with the frehand drive, maintains a firm wrist and elbw. Again, cntact with the ball is made in frnt f the player's bdy. VOLLEY The famus Martina Navratilva nce ffered this advice abut the vlley: "Keep it shrt and simple." The player's knees shuld be bent and legs slightly apart while the weight f the bdy is frward. The elbws shuld be turned in tward the bdy as the bdy pivts and the shulder turns tward the ball. The pwer f the vlley cmes nt frm the swing, but frm a firm wrist, gd timing and the ability t keep ne's bdy weight frward. LOB The lb features a shrt backswing, zn pen racquet face and an upward mtin. The fllw-thrugh n this sht is shrter than n ther shts. The gal f the lb is t hit the ball ver the ppnents head in rder t drive him/trer back in the curt. SLICE The frehand and backhand slices are used t make the ball spin and bunce crkedly. In the frehand slice, the player's shulders shuld turn as the racquet is brught back abve the level f the ball. The racquet head is tilted upward at this pint, while the player's weight is kept frward. Ideally, the fllw-thrugh n this sht is kept shrt.
