Forehand low crosscourt net from defensive (Square) stance: downward feed This task will introduce some of the playing basics and encourage the following Starting in a defensive square ready stance Striking from in front of the body with a racket leg lunge Coordination of the hit and lunge land i.e. hit land Change of grip to ensure greater success Stable recovery and early preparation for next stroke/move The player will master forward movement from a low square stance to a shuttle struck around knee to waist height. The movement will start from mid court and the player will move quickly forwards, racket out in front, leg out forward as part of the lunge contact Overhead hand feeding will be used. It is expected that the shuttle will travel crosscourt, upwards and over the net. Recovery should be in an upright position and into a forward attacking stance in preparation for the opponents net or lift. Assessment criteria Forehand low forward lunge with long step lunge. 6/10 over the net and travelling crosscourt Initial quick start movement from square stance Racket out in front during movement and combined with racket leg out in front Change of grip towards backhand grip Stable recovery into upright forward attacking stance Badminton Ireland Page 1

3 Coach note to ensure success Quick initial footwork; chasse style Grip to be changed to ensure the strings face upwards on contact : similar to backhand grip with thumb across the bevel. Contact with foot out in front ; get it over with foot Contact is a small rebound tap action Contact before or as foot lands between knee and waist height : encourage Hit Land Foot landing at or just after impact Coach note for feeding and initiating movement Feeder stands on the service line and throws straight into the court The target area for the feed is about 1m inside the side lines Overhead downwards throw : show shuttle take back throw F Player initiates split step as feeders arm prepares backwards. Backhand defensive stroke and sideways movement (right & left leg lunge) This task will introduce some of the playing basics and encourage the following Starting in a Square Defensive ready stance Early body preparation and anticipatory skills Use of split step to aid fast movement Early racket preparation and changes of grip to aid success The player will start in the midcourt non-racket leg on the centre line and adopt a Square defensive ready stance. Over arm Throwing hand feeding will be used for this assessment, ensure the feeding allows for and encourages split step start. The shuttle should travel over the net and land around the service line area. The exact height and distance travelled are not assessed at this level. Encourage a grip change in order to open the racket face Backhand block: note grip change in preparation for low block, racket face open Shuttle close to body Shuttle further to side Badminton Ireland Page 3

5 Two movements are preferred depending on how far to the side of the player the shuttle is. All movements to start with non-racket leg out then step over (if required) or coach as fall onto the racket leg as recovery Assessment criteria 6/10 going over net and landing in target area Square body position, Use of split step Early racket preparation, grip change Single step or pivot onto none racket leg for wider strokes Shuttle close to body Sideways lunge onto non-racket leg F Feeder stands over the service line Throws downwards Shuttle further to side Step onto racket leg then pivot onto racket leg as controlled wide lunge Start in square defensive stance Coach note to ensure success Holding with a sideways or thumb grip in order to open the racket face All movements start with a timed pretension / split step prior to stepping out onto the non racket leg For wider shuttles encourage a step over onto the racket foot Change grip to present racket face so that shuttle travels upwards. Move thumb around grip Early preparation is vital -small backswing preparation After contact, take a short chasse recovery step with racket leg Badminton Ireland Page 4

6 3 Hitting downwards with an overhead forehand This task will introduce some of the playing basics and encourage the following Moving backwards in preparation for an overhead stroke Racket preparation for power/deception Striking downwards whilst rotating in the air The player will master a backwards movement to return a shuttle from above their head with a forehand action. The feed will replicate a high lift from the net area or a high serve. The starting stance will be a forward attacking stance in preparation for an opponent s net reply. The initial movement will be with a turn and backwards chasse in a sideways stance It is important to start the racket preparation as soon as the body movement begins. The racket should be prepared so that it is slightly in front and above head height. The non racket arm must be upwards in front of the body. Badminton Ireland Page 5

7 Assessment criteria 6/10 going over net and landing in the mid court Early racket preparation, racket above head, elbow back, non racket arm upwards Loading of the back leg and pushing upwards off the court Body rotating in the air and landing with a wide balance stance Non racket arm curls upwards in recovery Coach note to ensure success Movement from base, chasse, scissor kick chasse back to base (1-2-3). In moving back first sideways turn, then chasse back to prepare for striking Racket preparation so that the racket can be seen at all times / small touch of racket with non racket hand / strings pointing downwards, racket held around head height Non racket hand upwards/pointing at shuttle Elbow pulled backwards in preparation to aid power Push upwards with rear leg to get off the ground Arms curl during the follow through Badminton Ireland Page 6

8 4 Overhead movement into the high backhand court: Round The Head (RTH) (Shadow only) This task will introduce and encourage the following Quick starting movements from defensive square and forward attacking ready stances Dynamic footwork : push up, jumping, turning, landing Use of arms and legs for balance Recovery footwork as preparation for the next shot The player will master quick dynamic backwards movement into the high backhand court. The movement will start from mid court in either a square defensive or forward attacking stance. Movement required Player starts just inside backhand court in an attacking stance i.e. racket leg lead Non racket leg moves out towards backcourt Hop and then pivot turn Chasse if required Push up off racket leg to start jump Player rotates whilst in the air Non racket arm curls in follow through to aid body recovery Legs land with wide base Recovery is with a running style or chasse style depending on time to move to the next stroke Assessment criteria Initial quick start movement from starting stance Racket prepared overhead early in movement Body pivot turns and then rotates with push up off court Stable wide landing and recovery towards the starting position. 9 Coach note to ensure success Quick early preparation of the racket so that it travels over the players head. High non racket hand during movement and prior to striking. 3 phases of movement : step outwards and backwards with the non racket leg hop on the non racket leg then pivot turn onto the racket leg push upwards off the racket leg Recover towards the middle of the court with running style or chasse style depending on the stroke played and the time the player has to recover and move to the shuttle Badminton Ireland Page 8

10 5 Overhead movement into the high forehand court: Sideways / Block jump (Shadow only) This task will introduce and encourage the following Quick starting movements from defensive square and forward attacking ready stances Dynamic footwork : push up, jumping, landing Use of arms and legs for balance Recovery footwork as preparation for the next shot The player will master quick dynamic backwards movement into the high forehand court. The movement will start from mid court in either a square defensive or forward attacking stance. Movement required Player starts just inside forehand court in an attacking stance i.e. racket leg lead Racket leg moves out towards backcourt, racket prepares early above the shoulder, similar to overhead hitting Quick powerful chasse footwork Bend of the legs to sink into the court then push upwards Player stays sideways with the chest facing the side of the court Racket reaches upwards and outwards Legs land with wide base Recovery is with a chasse style Assessment criteria Initial quick start movement from starting stance Racket prepared overhead early in movement Chasse jump approach Body stays sideways with push up off court Stable landing and recovery towards the starting position with chasse steps. 12 6 Movement review : f/h and b/h : starting, moving, stopping and recovering This task will review movement into both the forehand and backhand court as assessed in the White and Yellow Teicnic awards. The following basics will be reinforced and assessed Starting in a Forward Attacking and Defensive Square ready stances Initiating movements with split step/pretension movement The use of running, chasse and lunge movement styles Early racket preparation at the initial start of the movement and the ability to prepare for a variety of anticipated strokes The aspects of stopping and recovering to positions that relate to the stroke played and as early preparation for the next anticipated movement/stroke The coaching/learning concept of starting / moving / recovering as The review will ensure that the player is competent in moving forwards into the forecourt from both the forward attacking stance and the square defensive stance. All movements will start with a split step / pretension action to ensure quick reactive movement. The racket position at the start and during the movement will be assessed. The recovery into a stance corresponding to the stroke played will also be reviewed. 13 Starting and Recovery Stances Defensive Square Stance To be used when the shuttle is above the net level in the opponents court and can be struck downwards by the opponent. It is used to move quickly sideways to cover a fast downward stroke after playing a high serve, flick lift or defensive clear. Forward attacking stance : FH side To be used when the shuttle is below the net level in the opponents court and cannot be struck downwards by the opponent. It is used to move quickly forwards to anticipate an opponents stroke to the net area after playing a block, downward stroke, or net shot. Forward attacking stance : BH side To be used when the shuttle is below the net level in the opponent s court and cannot be struck downwards by the opponent. It is used to move quickly forwards to anticipate an opponent s stroke to the net area after playing a block, downward stroke, or net shot. Badminton Ireland Page 12

14 7 Moving forwards, backwards and recovering in forehand court (Shadow) This task will introduce the player to combined footwork movements using techniques from this and the previous two levels. It is not immediately physically challenging but good techniques must be observed throughout all the movements. Assessment criteria The ability to combine forwards and backwards movements The use of the split step, chasse, lunge, jump and landings The ability to start and recover into appropriate stances Early preparation of the racket in a way appropriate to the stroke played Shot sequence: FH Lift-FH Block Jump Down Hit-FH Net Movements The movements will be in two elements as shown below. Forehand side of the court Forehand net early racket out in front, chasse/run forwards, lunge, front foot pointing forwards, recover back to defensive sqaure stance after lift High Forehand - backwards chasse keeping body sideways (no rotation), early high racket preparation, wide landing Ready postions between movements These are be thought of as 'Recovery and Early Preparation' stances. The player should imagine playing a net lift Recovery into a square defensive stance to prepare for a smash Imagine that the opponent has hit a fast flat straight clear Move quickly sideway and backwards with chasse footwork, jumping up and out to the side Imagine playing a fast overhead clip downwards Recover towards the middle of the court into a forward attacking stance. The player should move forwards and imagine playing a net shot Recovery into a forward attacking stance behind the service line to anticipate an opponents net reply Imagine that the opponent has hit a net flick towards the high backhand court Move quickly backwards with a round the head style footwork Imagine playing a straight defensive high clear Recover towards the middle of the court into a square defensive stance. 16 9 Footwork Patterns This task will introduce the player to footwork tasks that are initially challenging but easily mastered through repetition and simple practice. Assessment criteria Move from the back of the court to the service line as shown below with a correct fluid style.
