1 Title: Big Idea: Fit for Life Physical Education Lesson Plan 9-12 Unit Cluster Enduring Understandings Physical activity involves using movement and motor skills throughout your life. How to apply specific movements, concepts, principles, strategies and tactics to variety of physical activities. We need to be physically active. Physical fitness contributes to quality of life. There are personal and social behavioral expectations in physically active settings. Physical activity provides a variety of opportunities for enjoyment, challenge, self-expression and /or social interaction. Lesson Essential Question(s) How do I make motor skills and physical activity an integral part of my life? What concepts, principles, strategies and tactics do apply to specific physical activity? What can I do to be physically active throughout my life? Delaware Physical Education Standards Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities. Demonstrates understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply to the learning and performance of physical activities. Participates regularly in physical activity. Achieves and maintains a health-enhancing level if physical fitness. Exhibits responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings. Creates opportunities for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and/or social interaction through physical activity. Lesson Summary First Class Warm up- approximately 7 minutes Preassessment (mini tennis)- approximately 5 minutes Teaching the proper backstroke technique- approximately 5 minutes Start in ready position, turn body towards the ball as the racket is placed in back-swing position with both hands on it. Then, swing racket towards the ball as weight is shifted towards the front foot. Simply follow through to end the stroke.

2 Practicing Backhand Form- 5 min. Re-playing mini tennis using the proper technique- approximately 8 min. Cool down and putting equipment back in place- approximately 7 min. Second Class Backhand Stroke Skills Test Mini tennis Students will know correct position for a backhand stroke the importance for a follow through Students will be able to demonstrate the proper technique for a backhand stroke use the skill in a physical activity setting Time: 2 classes- 45 minutes each Materials and Preparation 25 Tennis Racquets 15 Tennis Balls Resources and Web Links Sports and Recreational Activities Twelfth Edition Teaching Steps Warm-up- stretching and light jog (5 minutes) and review of previous class Activity- see below (perform a skills test to each student following the rubric below- second class) Closure- wrap-up Assessment(s) for Lesson Backhand Stroke Skills Test- see bottom Tennis Quiz- see bottom, can be used at anytime after the basics have been taught Teacher Notes Warm up (approximately 7 minutes): The students will complete two full laps around the gymnasium or tennis courts followed by various stretches for muscles such as the deltoids, latts, biceps, triceps, hamstrings, quads, etc.

3 Preassessment (approximately 5 minutes): Before giving instructions on the proper technique, I will have the students play a game of mini tennis to see what they all ready know about hitting a backhand shot. This will allow me to observe form and technique to identify problem areas. Rules for mini tennis: Mini tennis is played the same way as regular tennis except the boundaries are between the service lines and the alleys are not used. This game is used for control over the ball and accuracy on where to place the ball without worrying about speed which could interfere with learning control. Backhand shot is very commonly regarded as a more difficult shot than forehand and many people have a lot of trouble with it. We will talk about right-handers but the same point stands for left-handers too. When a right-hander does something like pick up keys, open the door, or clean up the table with a cloth, he usually does that on the right side of the body. We unconsciously move our body in a position that it's comfortable for our right hand. And that is usually slightly on the right side. And since we have been doing that for years we develop very good eye-hand coordination on the right side. We can judge distances much better slightly on the right side than on the left where we rarely do any actions with our right arm. Backhand shot is on the left side and we don't have a good feeling for that side; not only with our arm and hand but also judging distances and coordinating our arm. That's why we need to take some time and get used to doing things on our left side with the right arm. Number 1 reason why the tennis backhand shot is usually weaker than the forehand we hit it fewer times! As soon as you started to play tennis you might have felt that your backhand shot is a little weaker than your forehand and you tried to play as many shot as possible with your forehand. You might have hit 3 times more forehands in your tennis career than backhand shots. Repetition is the mother of skill. It's not the backhand shot that is weak, it just hasn't received the same amount of training as the forehand shot. Practice form- no tennis ball Play mini tennis using backhand stroke. Closure: The backhand stroke is not an easy skill to master, but practicing and making that side of your body stronger will greatly help. The advantages to knowing how to you use the backhand stroke in a game are very good! Keep on practicing, tomorrow we will have our skills test that will be done exactly the same way as the forehand stroke.
