3 Handbook for Teachers The lessons for each age group are on separate discs in the DVD box set. Each age group also has its own section in this handbook. Teach tennis with confidence This innovative teaching support has been developed to empower primary school teachers to deliver tennis with confidence. It demonstrates how tennis can be taught to 0 mixed-ability pupils in a school hall. Demonstrating the activities Some teachers may be concerned that they do not have the necessary skills to teach some of the more complex tennis activities. We have recruited one of the country s leading schools tennis coaches to demonstrate all the activities. This allows you to watch the demonstrations with the pupils then teach the activities to the class. The school hall You need to use the school hall for each 5-week block of lessons. The demonstrations of the drills, skills, games and activities on the DVDs are played to the pupils in the school hall. Therefore when you book the hall, you also need to book the TV and DVD player, or an interactive whiteboard/projector. A note about aerial shots In order to demonstrate how to set up activities, we provide shots of the hall from above, giving you an aerial view. However, we have only used half the hall and 5 pupils so that everyone can clearly see what is required. You will have 0 pupils in your class, but we are confident that the aerial shot will give you all the information you need to deliver the tennis activities to the whole class in a safe and fun way. the DVD Menu screen Introduction This section is an introduction to the DVD for teachers. It explains why the DVD has been developed and gives a preview of its contents. Please watch this introduction without the children before you start the lessons. Inclusion This section is also for teachers. It demonstrates how the contents of the DVD can be adapted for children who are less able or have additional learning needs. Please watch this introduction without the children before you start the lessons. Taster/Assembly This is the first section to show to the pupils. Many children have never seen tennis played, let alone played it themselves. This musical section shows teenage children having fun on a tennis court. We hope it enthuses and inspires the children to enjoy what s ahead! He then demonstrates the first activity. At the end of it, he points to the class and says: Now it s your turn. The teacher The teacher then directs the whole class to follow the activity, and leads the pupils through it. Key teaching points The key teaching points of each activity are highlighted on the screen. They will remain there until the class is ready to move on to the next activity. At this point, the teacher directs the children back to the screen and presses PLAY on the remote control. At the bottom right-hand side of the screen there is a progress bar that indicates how many activities remain in the lesson. Each lesson includes a warm up, agility, balance and coordination skills (ABCs), a main theme and a game. ABCs - Agility, Balance and Coordination a B C Agility: In tennis, the player must be able to move around the court efficiently and effectively, being quick but always in control. Each lesson plan features: key An overhead photo of the hall: Diagrams for cone layouts: A key to show you what equipment to provide and whether pupils need partners or teams: Racket Ball Bucket Cone Partner Teams Teams 6 7
