1 Somerset at The Plantation October 2018 NEWSLETTER Tennis Newsletter Tennis Director Somerset Michael Brandon Mike is a certified member of the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA), the world's oldest and largest association of tennis teaching professionals. He has achieved, the highest rating of ELITE PROFESSIONAL from the USPTA. Tennis Rules & Regulations The Plantation Tennis program is an amenity provided to the residents for enjoyment, friendly competition, a possible stress reducer and a healthy activity to enhance your overall well-being. While participating in our tennis program, it's important to follow the rules and regulations for everyone's safety and to ensure a fun, friendly atmosphere. Please click here to view the updated Tennis Rules and Regulations. Reminder: Smoking or use of tobacco products is prohibited on the tennis/pickleball courts, or surrounding spectator areas.
2 Lessons Racquet Restringing Let's get those tennis games up and in shape! Form your own small group and take a clinic or a private lesson to address your areas of concern. Lessons will help to improve your weaker areas and build on your strengths. Lessons will help your tennis game - that we can assure you! Please contact Tennis Director Mike Brandon at mbrandon@evergreen-lm.com for lessons. Private and group lessons accessible upon request. Bring in your racquet to have it inspected for restringing. REMEM- BER that racquets should be restrung at least three times per year. A properly strung racquet will aid you in ball striking, and arm troubles will also benefit with new strings. Mike s Corner I have posted on the tennis bulletin board (court 1) two different tennis tournaments. The Landings (Fort Myers) is hosting one towards the end of October and Academia Sanchez- Casal (Naples) is hosting a November 2-11 tournament. Both tournaments are open to all different levels of play. I am accepting entries for our November 3 rd Tennis fund raiser. This fun doubles event will feature different partners via a blind draw. If you are a new tennis player we will provide courts and low compression balls for you to enjoy this event. The event will run from 8:30-11 a.m., entry fee is $12 per person with all proceeds going to Madisen s Match which supports the pediatric and adult cancer treatment programs of the Lee Health Foundation. Please see or Mike. League Season is here! All home matches are posted on the tennis bulletin board. Come out and support your teams! Here is an interesting snippet from an article in The New York Times: Playing tennis and other sports that are social might add years to your life, according to a new epidemiological study of Danish men and women. The study found that adults who reported frequently participating in tennis or other racquet and team sports lived longer than people who were sedentary. But they also lived longer than people who took part in reliably healthy but often solitary activities such as jogging, swimming and cycling. FUTURE EVENTS: I will be hosting a Wilson Tennis demo day in January. Last year Somerset hosted this event which was the largest turnout for Wilson for the year. In early December we will be hosting a Grill and Chill Tennis Happy Hour Mixer. We will have a Somerset Club Tennis Ladder (LADDERO) that will include both doubles and singles. The singles will be a half court diagonal format which will reduce the running and increase the hitting during each point. Details for these events will soon follow. Sincerely, Mike Brandon Tennis Director
3 . Tennis Mixer Starting October 2, 2018 Must RSVP to Cyndi & Ron Myers at or call K & Health Day Saturday, November 3 Please contact Mike Brandon at mbrandon@evergreen-lm.com if interested in participating on the tennis event. Spaces are limited!
4 Somerset at The Plantation October 2018 NEWSLETTER Pickleball Did you know? Pickleball Court Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in America with 2.8 million players. It uses skills from tennis, badminton and ping pong. First Come, First Served Limit one game to 11 (when people are waiting to play) Players waiting to play, line paddles up in sets of 4. Rotation continues as long as people are waiting. ONLY Players, Paddles, and Balls are allowed on courts. Courts use for Somerset Residents and invited Guests only. A Somerset Resident must be on the courts with guests. Smoking or use of tobacco products is prohibited on the tennis/pickleball courts, or surrounding spectator areas. Why is pickleball: A Game for Everyone According to USAPA.org, there are over 15,000 indoor and outdoor courts in the United States; and at least one location in all 50 states. Pickleball is being introduced to kids in teenagers in physical education classes in middle and high schools. And though the sport has become more competitive through the years, many players enjoy the social aspects of the game and the ability to stay active in their own towns and communities. Guest Policy Guests are all individuals who are not residents of Somerset at The Plantation. A maximum of three (3) guests per residential household are allowed on Pickleball Courts. A resident must be on the court with guest at all times.
