Shawn Johnson Live Stats...Huskers.com The 12th-ranked Nebraska women s gymnastics team gears up for the Big Ten Championships this Saturday at the Devaney Center in Lincoln. The meet is split into two sessions, with Nebraska, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State and Penn State competing in the evening session that is scheduled to start 4:05 p.m. (CT). Iowa, Illinois, Maryland and Rutgers will compete in the first session which is slated to begin at 11:05 a.m. (CT). Both sessions will be televised live on Big Ten Network. The Cornhuskers (15-3, 7-2 Big Ten) enter the championships as winners of three consecutive meets, including a victory in last week s B1G Five Meet in Columbus, Ohio, to qualify for the evening session. NU s team score of was its second-highest score of the season and second-consecutive week at or above As a team, the Huskers set season-highs with scores of on beam and on floor. Following Saturday s performance, Nebraska s Regional Qualifying Score (RQS) is up to Husker gymnasts Hollie Blanske and Grace Williams were named first-team All-Big Ten this week, while Jennie Laeng and Danielle Breen earned second-team All-Big Ten honors. This is the second-consecutive firstteam All-Big Ten honor for Blanske after she was named second-team All-Big Ten in The honor is the first All-Big Ten award for Williams, Laeng and Breen. It s an incredible accomplishment to be named to these all-conference teams, Nebraska Coach Dan Kendig said. The quality of gymnastics in the Big Ten Conference keeps getting stronger and stronger, and this is quite an honor for all four of our gymnasts. At the B1G Five Meet last week, Breen won her second all-around title in three weeks, tying her career high with a score of Breen also picked up an event title on beam, which she shared with teammate Megan Schweihofer, with both scoring 9.925s. Williams shared the bars title with a score of 9.875, while Blanske and Laeng tied for the floor exercise title with scores of Nebraska finished third at the Big Ten Championships last season with a score of The Huskers have won 24 conference championships in program history, with the last coming in NU has produced 108 individual conference champions, including Laeng, who was the 2015 Big Ten co-champion on bars, and Blanske, who was the 2013 Big Ten co-champion on vault. Also competing in the evening session is Michigan, which has won the last two conference championships meets, and Minnesota, which won the 2016 regular season title with a perfect 9-0 conference record. Michigan State, Ohio State and Penn State round out the lineup for the evening session. NU will begin the meet on floor before moving to vault, uneven bars and balance beam, with byes in the third and sixth rotations. The meet will be televised live on BTN and streamed on BTN2go.com with Dean Linke and Shawn Johnson on the call. Live scoring will be available for the meet at Huskers.com. Tickets are good for both sessions and are on sale now. Fans are asked to pick up a wristband before leaving the first session to be allowed re-entry. Huskers Earn All-Big Ten Honors Nebraska senior Hollie Blanske and sophomore Grace Williams were named first-team All-Big Ten, the conference announced Monday. Junior Jennie Laeng and sophomore Danielle Breen earned second-team All-Big Ten honors. This is the second-consecutive first-team all-conference honor for Blanske after she was named second-team All-Big Ten in The award is the first All-Big Ten honor for Williams, Laeng and Breen. Breen Leads Huskers at B1G Five Sophomore Danielle Breen continued her strong performances last Saturday at the B1G Five Meet in Columbus, Ohio. 5 s, y ) o n s t r s s a o y h ll n NEBRASKA WOMEN S GYMNASTICS MEET NOTES THE LAST TIME March 23, Big Ten Championships - Nebraska (1st/8) Paced by a then-program-record on vault and nine titles in four events and the all-around, the No. 9 Nebraska women s gymnastics team captured their third-consecutive conference crown with a at the 2013 Big Ten Women s Gymnastics Championships. NU s score was a conference championship school record and gave Head Coach Dan Kendig his 14th conference title at Nebraska. The Huskers crown marked the first time the program has earned three-straight conference titles since Emily Wong earned her second consecutive Big Ten all-around title, posting the second-highest score at a conference championship meet in school history (39.725). Wong took or tied for top honors on uneven bars (9.925), balance beam (9.90) and floor exercise (9.975) en route to top honors at the meet. Joining Wong at the top of the podium were five additional Huskers. Janelle Giblin, Hollie Blanske, Brittany Skinner and Jessie DeZiel all tied for the title of conference vault champion, posting identical scores of Wong and Jennifer Lauer tied three other conference gymnasts to earn the beam title at The Huskers kicked off the championship meet and took an early lead with a on bars. NU was paced by Wong, who earned a meet-best overall that included a perfect 10.0 from one of four judges. Nebraska displayed great focus and composure on beam in its second rotation, bouncing back from an early fall to capture a on the event. Wong and Jennifer Lauer led the way for the Big Red, each earning marks of 9.90 in their anchoring routines to tie for the conference title. The Huskers exploded for a season-high on floor in their third rotation, which tied for the secondhighest floor score at a conference championship in program history. Emily Wong led the way for NU, earning a perfect 10.0 from two judges to capture a career-high Nebraska took to vault in their final rotation of the evening, needing a stellar performance to overtake Michigan for the conference title. The Huskers delivered, earning a to seal their third-straight title. Four Huskers earned identical scores of 9.95 to tie for top honors in the Big Ten: Blanske, DeZiel, Giblin, and Skinner. Emily Wong earned the seventh-highest all-around score in school history, finishing with a to take top honors at the meet. The championship features a field of 36 teams determined based on their regional qualifying score and seeded by the NCAA Women s Gymnastics Committee. Included in the championship field are also 24 all-around competitors and 48 individual event specialists (all of whom are not on a qualifying team). NCAA Regionals will be held on April 2 at six predetermined campus sites. REVIEWING 2015 Nebraska went 28-9 in 2015, finishing eighth in the team competition at the NCAA Championships in Fort Worth, Texas. Three Huskers combined for four All-America Awards at the national meet, as NU made its 23rd overall appearance at the championships. The Huskers combined for 43 individual titles and numerous conference and national awards on the season, helping NU remain one of the nation s top programs. Senior Jessie DeZiel capped her career as one of Nebraska s most decorated gymnasts, grabbing two All-America awards to give her nine total for her career. She was named Nebraska s Female Student-Athlete of the Year. Hollie Blanske and Ashley Lambert also captured All-America honors for the Huskers. DeZiel, Blanske, Lambert and Desire Stephens each captured All-Big Ten honors, while Jennie Laeng was the Big Ten co-champion on uneven bars. Nebraska continued its strong work in the classroom, as nine Huskers were named academic All-Big Ten and six were named NACGC/W Scholastic All-Americans. 6 NEBRASKA WOMEN S GYMNASTICS MEET NOTES NEBRASKA HEAD COACH DAN KENDIG (23rd Year at NU/33rd Year Overall) When Nebraska Head Coach Dan Kendig was hired in 1993, his goals were to return the Nebraska gymnastics program to national prominence and to have Nebraska in a position to win a national title, while also maintaining the highest standards of academic excellence for Husker student-athletes. Kendig has not only accomplished those goals, but made them a standard for excellence in his 23-year tenure, as Nebraska is considered among the nation s elite in both the gym and the classroom. In the 22 seasons of the existence of the NCAA Super Six Finals, Nebraska is one of only six programs, along with Georgia, Alabama, UCLA, Utah and Michigan, to qualify for nine or more team finals, and the Huskers have earned NCAA Championship berths in 15 of the past 18 years. Under Kendig, 40 NU gymnasts have combined to earn 139 All-America honors since 1995, nearly 10 times NU s previous total during the program s first 18 seasons. At the conference level, the results are equally as impressive. Nebraska has won 13 of the past 19 conference titles, including an unprecedented six straight Big Eight/Big 12 crowns from 1994 to In addition, Nebraska has had at least one individual conference champion in each of the past 19 seasons and 10 all-around champions, while seven gymnasts have been conference newcomers of the year. Since Kendig arrived at NU, his teams have compiled an outstanding (.724) record, including a regular-season record and a postseason mark. He has also earned national, regional or conference coach-of-the-year honors in 10 of the past 19 seasons. Eleven of Nebraska s nation-best 15 CoSIDA Academic All-America awards in women s gymnastics have come under Kendig, while he has also produced two NCAA Woman of the Year finalists -- Shelly Bartlett in 1997 and Richelle Simpson in In addition, Kendig coached Joy Taylor when she became the 1996 CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Year, as well as Simpson, who was recognized with a 2005 NCAA Top Eight Award.
