Elmer also leads NU with service aces. Saleaumua Does Everything for NU NU Coach John Cook has labeled Jennifer Saleaumua the Huskers top all-around player, and the sophomore outside hitter is proving why during Big 1 Conference play. In league matches, Saleuamua has quietly taken over the team lead in kills per game (.) and digs per game (.7). Saleaumua ranks fourth in the Big 1 in digs per game. Saleaumua posted a career-best digs against Kansas State Oct. 11, then bettered the mark with 7 digs against Missouri Oct. 1. Saleaumua has posted double-figure kill totals in 1 of s last 11 matches after reaching the mark just once in NU s first six contests. She tallied a then-career-best 17 kills Sept. 17 to help defeat Texas A&M in a come-from-behind victory. Oct. at KU, Saleaumua recorded 1 kills on a. hitting percentage. NU s average of. service aces per game ranks second in the Big 1. In conference matches, the Huskers lead the Big 1 with. service aces per game. Nine Huskers own a service ace, and six have at least 1. Sophomore middle blocker Melissa Elmer leads NU with aces, followed by freshman setter Dani Busboom with. Sophomore setter Michelle Lynch has. tied the 1-year-old school record for service aces in a three-game match with 1 at Texas Sept.. Lynch led the effort with five aces, while sophomore outside hitter Jennifer Saleaumua and freshman middle blocker Christina Houghtelling each had four. Super Jump Servers Opponents have had a difficult time handling the Husker jump servers. Sophomore setter Michelle Lynch, freshman setter Dani Busboom and freshman middle blocker Christina Houghtelling have tallied of s 1 service aces. Busboom () and Lynch () rank second and third on the team, respectively, while Houghtelling is sixth. Two factors make the mark all the more impressive Houghtelling has played in just of NU s games, while Lynch did not jump serve in s first nine matches. Aces Up, Blocks Down is averaging. blocks per game in after leading the nation with at least.17 blocks per game in each of the past three seasons. However, the Huskers serving may be partly responsible for the dip in blocking numbers, as NU is averaging an impressive. service aces per game. Aces/Blocks Comparison As NU s service aces per game have gone up, their blocks per game have gone down. Years sapg bpg Block Party entered its Oct. match against Kansas averaging. blocks per game after posting at least.17 blocks per game in the previous three seasons. However, a dominant performance at the net against the Jayhawks pushed the Huskers over. mark. followed the KU performance with a solid 1 blocks against Kansas State Oct. 11, and NU ranked ninth int the Oct. 1 NCAA statistics. The Huskers totaled a season-high team blocks against Kansas, which is the best mark by a Big 1 team this season. The total was the most by a Husker team in matches. 5 Page NU All-American Amber Holmquist in blocks per game last season, leads NU and ranks first in the Big 1 and fourth nationally with 1. stops per game. Elmer had a career-high 1 blocks against Kansas. Cook s Winning Ways Coach John Cook has been amazingly successful during his four seasons at the helm, posting a record. Cook picked up his 1th victory as head coach Sept. when NU defeated New Orleans, -. Cook s only losses in his first three seasons were to 1 NCAA champion Stanford, 1 NCAA runner-up Long Beach State, NCAA champion USC and NCAA semifinal participant Hawaii. Cook has lost just two Big 1 Conference matches, going 7-1 and winning three league titles. Cook was the AVCA Coach of the Year in after leading to a - season and a national title. He was also named the 1 Big 1 Coach of the Year. In 1, NU posted a 1- mark and advanced to the NCAA semifinals. Last season, also finished with a 1- record and advanced to the NCAA regional finals. The Huskers have won three Big 1 titles under Cook. Youth Movement With a lineup low on experience and depth at some positions, s freshmen have been asked to play immediately. Setter Dani Busboom (Cortland, Neb.), middle blocker Christina Houghtelling (Cambridge, Neb.), outside hitter Dani Mancuso (Omaha, Neb.) libero Amanda McCormick (Muncie, Ind.) and right side hitter Kelsey Fautsch (Chisago Lakes, Minn.), a redshirt freshman, have all contributed significantly this season. Busboom has played more than any other freshman in the Huskers - offense, sharing the setting duties with sophomore Michelle Lynch. Busboom is averaging. assists per game and has made an impression at the service line with aces, which is second on the team. Mancuso, an Omaha Gross graduate, earned her first career start Sept. against New Orleans, replacing the injured Jennifer Saleaumua. Mancuso made the most of her opportunity by pounding a match-high 1 kills while swinging at a. clip. She also started against Georgia Tech and produced five kills. Mancuso is averaging 1. kills per game. Houghtelling has been a part-time starter. She came off the bench and pounded nine kills against Georgia Tech, then started against Texas A&M and recorded eight kills and a match-high five blocks. Houghtelling had four kills and four service aces against Texas Sept.. She is averaging 1. kills per game. However, she did not play against Oklahoma and Kansas because of knee problems, and she played in only the first two games against Kansas State Oct. 11 and the first three against Missouri Oct. 1. Fautsch is one of two right side hitters in NU s - offense. Fautsch averages.1 kills per game and is hitting.7. McCormick started the first match of her career Oct. 1 against Missouri and accounted for 1 digs, which ranks third all-time at. Even some of the upperclassmen who are are in the starting lineup are experiencing their first significant playing time. Junior outside hitter Ally Rebholz saw limited action as NU s third outside hitter in and 1. Lynch is setting for the first time after playing the role of serving specialist last year, and senior libero Jenae Dowling has seen a huge increase in playing time after playing sparingly as a defensive specialist during the past three seasons. Looking Back: Missouri, Missouri came back from a - deficit to defeat eighth-ranked, -, -, -, -1, 1-, Wednesday night at the NU Coliseum, snapping its -match losing streak against the Huskers. With the loss, fell to 1- overall and 7- in the Big 1, while Missouri improved to 1- overall and 7- in the league. The loss marks the first time since 17 that, which fell to Kansas State last Saturday, has lost two straight conference matches. It also marks the first time that NU has lost back-to-back matches since the 1 season. The contest was also the first time since 1 that held a - lead in a match and lost. bested Missouri in every statistical category except blocks, but the Huskers committed a season-high hitting errors and swung for a.11 percentage.
