Gray, from Tulsa s Holland Hall, recorded a 30-9 record in his first year of collegiate competition. Gray went 13-3 in the fall tournament season and posted a 17-6 record in the spring duel season. His 30 wins put him in a three-way tie for fourth place on the school s single season wins list with Louie Pranic ( ) and Nenad Toroman ( ). In the fall, Gray began his collegiate career with eight-straight singles victories. Tulsa Ends 2005 Ranked Nationally The University of Tulsa men s tennis team ended their season ranked No. 48 according to the Final Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings. TU finished the season with a record. In the ITA Central Region rankings Tulsa was ranked No. 3 as a team. TU Misses NCAA Tournament Despite Tough Schedule Despite having its first winning season since , the Golden Hurricane men s tennis team failed to receive a bid to the NCAA tournament. Tulsa played 15 teams that received bids to the 64-team field, as well as 12 top-50 ranked teams. The Hurricane posted a 5-10 record against these teams, including wins against Louisville, ORU, SMU, TCU and Southwest Missouri State. The Hurricane finished the season with a record and a ranking of No. 48, its best since Golden Hurricane Ends WAC Tournament Run in Semifinals The No. 48-ranked Tulsa men s tennis team traveled to Honolulu, Hawaii for the 2005 WAC Championships, April TU went 1-1 in the tournament, defeating No. 65 Fresno State in the quarterfinals, 4-2, and losing to No. 30 ranked and tournament No. 1 seed, Boise State, 4-2, in the semifinals. Gray Reaches 30 Wins Freshman Will Gray won two matches at the WAC Championship Tournament to increase his single season win total to 30. Soriano registered 24 wins in his first season mainly at the No. 3 ladder position. Freshman Andy Connelly (Oklahoma City, Okla.) and junior Diego Camacho (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) were named to the second-team all-conference doubles team after posting an 18-6 doubles record. 2 Tulsa Men s Tennis TU Loses Close One to Oklahoma State The Golden Hurricane won the doubles point against No. 14-ranked Oklahoma State before dropping the first four ladder positions to the Cowboys and falling, 4-3, on Wednesday April 13. The match was televised on Cox Channel 3 in Tulsa. TU gained doubles wins from the duos of Diego Camacho and Andy Connelly as well as Lucques Maasdorp and Ricardo Soriano. Singles wins came from Federico Soriano and Camacho. Maasdorp Scores TU s Only Win Against Sooners Looking to win its fourth straight match, the Golden Hurricane met a road block as it met the No. 48-ranked Oklahoma Sooners. TU lost the match 6-1. Junior Lucques Maasdorp (Patterson, South Africa) won TU s only singles match of the duel by defeating Lee Gregg, 7-, 6-4. Maasdorp also teamed up with freshman Ricardo Soriano for Tulsa s lone doubles win as they beat Alexei Ivanov and Federico Chavarria, 9-7. The Ides of Texas Tulsa has faced eight Texas-based opponents, posting a 4-4 record. The four losses for TU came against top-50 Texas teams-texas, Rice, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and Texas A&M. Tulsa evened that record as they defeated SMU and TCU by scores of 4-3. SMU was ranked #46 and TCU #39. Tulsa s other two wins against the state of Texas came against Texas Southern and Lamar. Revenge is Sweet After having been knocked from the Indoor Regional Qualifier by Arkansas in October, the Golden Hurricane defeated the Razorbacks, 5-2 on March 30. Freshman Ricardo Soriano clinched the victory for TU in the third set of his match against Matt Roberts. Golden Hurricane Has Tough Road Against Top-30 Teams The Golden Hurricane played an outstanding and highly competitive schedule in , after winning their first seven matches, Tulsa went 0-8 against top-30 teams. Tulsa lost to their first top-30 ranked team when it lost three heartbreakers by the score of 4-3 against #26 Arizona, #19 Auburn, and #14 Oklahoma State. TU kept it close with #22 Tulane and #27 Wake Forest before losing 5-2. The Hurricane has been swept by two teams, #28 Texas and #17 Texas A&M. Most recently, the Golden Hurricane lost to #30 Boise State, 4-2, in the semifinals of the WAC tournament. TU goes 2-1 at Blue Gray Tennis Classic The Golden Hurricane men s tennis team went an impressive 2-1 at the Blue Gray Tennis Classic, as the loss came in the semifinals to #44 Texas A&M- Corpus Christi. In the first round, TU downed the #75-ranked Colorado Buffaloes, 5-1. TU swept the three doubles matches to win the doubles point and won four singles matches, with Achim Roth, Aleksander Charpantidis, Frederico Soriano and Will Gray capturing the victories. In the quarterfinals, TU faced No. 59 Fresno State, defeating them, 4-2. Fresno State won the doubles point, with TU winning at the No. 2 ladder position with Diego Camacho and Andy Connelly. In singles, TU got wins from Charpantidis, Federico Soriano, Gray and Camacho. TU faced TAMU-CC in the semifinals, falling 4-2. TAMU-CC won the doubles point by sweeping the action. TU gained singles wins from Ricardo Soriano and Diego Camacho. Golden Hurricane Handle Bradley and Memphis On February 5, after losing the doubles point to Memphis, TU rallied and swept all six singles matches, to win the duel match, 6-1. The lone doubles win came from Achim Roth and Aleksander Charpantidis who defeated James Spence and Scott Felsenthal, 8-6. Singles wins came from Roth, Charpantidis, Ricardo Soriano, Federico Soriano, Will Gray and Diego Camacho. In the nightcap against Bradley, the Golden Hurricane won, 5-2. TU won the doubles point with wins by Roth and Charpantidis as well as by the duo of Camacho and Ricardo Soriano. Tulsa won four of the six singles matches, including wins by Charpantidis, Ricardo Soriano, Will Gray, and Lucques Maasdorp. 3 Tulsa Men's Tennis Team Loses Heartbreaker to #26 Arizona The #46-ranked University of Tulsa men s tennis team dropped a close duel match to the #26-ranked Arizona Wildcats, 4-3, at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center, Jan. 29. In a battle of ranked doubles teams in the No. 1 ladder position, #18 Roger Matalonga and Colin O Grady defeated #41 Achim Roth and Aleksander Charpantidis, 8-5. TU s Diego Camacho and Andy Connelly won in the tiebreaker over Bruno Alcala and Daniel Andrus, 9-7. In the No. 3 ladder position, Paul Warkentin and Christen Claudio narrowly edged Lucques Maasdorp and Will Gray, 8-6. Arizona won the doubles point giving them a 1-0 lead in the duel. In singles, Will Gray (Tulsa, Okla.) kept the duel close as he defeated Christen Claudio 6-2, 7-6 (4), tying the score at 1. After a tough first set, Ricardo Soriano posted a 7-6(4), 6-3 win over Bruno Alcala, to give tie the duel match at 2-2. Federico Soriano kept the Golden Hurricane in the duel as his three-set victory, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, over Paul Warkentin, tied the match at 3. Camacho lost the match in the No. 5 ladder position to give the Wildcats the edge in the match. TU Upsets #39 Louisville TU added to wins as the Hurricane defeat cross-town rival Oral Roberts, 7-0, New Mexico State, 7-0 and upset #39 Louisville, 4-1, improving to 7-0 after the first two weeks of season. In singles action, Aleksander Charpantidis (Wroclaw, Poland) played in all three matches at the No. 2 ladder position and finished with a 3-0 record, improving his record to 12-5 on the season. Diego Camacho, Will Gray, Andy Connelly, Lucques Maasdorp, Federico Soriano and Ricardo Soriano all went 2-0 over the three-match span. Achim Roth lost his match to #124 ranked Damar Johnson of Louisville. In doubles action, the team of Camacho and Connelly went 3-0, Maasdorp and Gray went 2-1, while Charpantidis and Roth went 2-0. Camacho Named Western Athletic Conference Men s Tennis Player of the Week Tulsa junior Diego Camacho (Santa Cruz, Bolivia) was named the first Western Athletic Conference Men s Tennis Player of the Week for the week of January Camacho, a junior from Santa Cruz, Bolivia, participated in all four dual matches in the first weekend of action for the Golden Hurricane, winning all four of his singles matches, losing only 12 of 60 games. In doubles action, Camacho and Andy Connelly finished a perfect 4-0 as well. Tulsa has Excellent Opening Weekend The Golden Hurricane kicked off the 2005 season in dominating fashion, as Tulsa posted three consecutive shutouts of Texas Southern, Lamar and Creighton winning those three matches 7-0. To close out the fourth match of the weekend TU defeated Southwest Missouri State, 6-1. Junior Diego Camacho and freshman Ricardo Soriano went 4-0 during the weekend, while Will Gray and Lucques Maasdorp went 3-0. Achim Roth, played in the number one position all weekend and finished 3-1, as the lone defeat of the TU team came in Roth s match vs. Jiri Spousta of Southwest Missouri State. Aleksander Charpantidis, Andy Connelly and Federico Soriano went undefeated as well. In doubles action TU was just as successful, losing only one of the 12 matches. Camacho and Connelly paired up and went 4-0 on the weekend. Gray and Maasdorp combined forces for a 4-0 record as well. Ricardo and Federico Soriano posted a 2-0 record while TU s number-41 ITA ranked duo of Achim Roth and Aleksander Charpantidis went 1-1. The one loss for the team came against Jiri Spousta and Pavel Hanek of Southwest Missouri State. Gray Wins Copper Bowl Junior Tennis Championships Freshman Will Gray (Tulsa, Okla.) claimed the Boys 18 title at the Copper Bowl Junior Tennis Championships in Tucson over the holiday break. Gray was unseeded in the tournament but defeated five seeded players on his way to the title. In the finals, Gray defeated Kyle Baker, 6-1, 7-5. The event featured 900 of the nation s top players. It is the world s second largest juniors tournament. Westbrook Finishes 14th Season as Head Coach Vince Westbrook finished his 14th season as the head men s tennis coach at The University of Tulsa, as well as his 10th as the director of the Hurricane tennis programs. The men s team was ranked as high as No. 37 in and finished with a record. Westbrook has compiled a career record at Tulsa with the men s program, the most wins ever for a Tulsa coach. He completed his head coaching duties with the women s team in 1998 with 52 wins.
