Loyola-Chicago 10-4 / Lewis 10-4 / Ohio State 9-5 / Grand Canyon 7-7 / Ball State 9-5 / 21-6 IPFW 5-9 / Lindenwood 5-9 / Quincy 1-13 / Scouting Ball State The Cardinals (7-3, 3-0 MIVA) extended its winning streak to six after picking up conference wins against Quincy and Lindenwood on the road. The match against No. 1 Loyola will mark the second time this season that Ball State has hosted the No. 1 team in the country - the first time in school history that has happened in one season. The Cardinals are ranked seventh in the country in blocking with a 2.88 average led by MIVA Defensive Player of the Week who has a 1.41 blocks per set average. Sophomore Marcin Niemczewski leads the offense for Ball State with a MIVAbest 3.67 kills per set average. Seniors and head up the block for Ball State with 1.41 and 0.95 blocks per set, respectively. Junior libero David Ryan Vander Meer has collected 86 digs on the year for a 2.26 digs per set average. Scouting Loyola The Ramblers (11-1, 4-0 MIVA) are coming off wins against Grand Canyon. Joseph Smalzer s 20 kills in Loyola s first sweep of Grand Canyon was not only a season-high for the senior, but also for the team. Smalzer and Thomas Jaeschke lead the offense for the Ramblers with 132 and 122 kills each so far on the season. Smalzer is a threat from behind the service line with 33 aces on the season and a nation s-best 0.87 aces per set average. Series with Loyola Loyola holds a advantage in the series against Ball State which dates back to the 1996 season. Last season the Ramblers were 2-1 in matches against the Cardinals including a 3-1 win in the MIVA Semifinals. And Then There Were Four Heading into Thursday s match, there are four teams left in the country that are undefeated in conference play: Ball State, Loyola, Harvard and Penn State. Leske Earns Defensive Player of the Week - Feb. 18 Senior middle attacker led the blocking unit in wins against conference opponents Quincy and Lindenwood to extend Ball State s winning streak to six matches. He collected 11 total blocks in the two contests. Record Watching Senior setter moved to sixth in program history after his 35 assists performance against Lindenwood on Feb. 15 to give him 2,316 career assists. Niemczewski is just the second MIVA player to earn national player of the week accolades this season, and is the first Ball State men s volleyball player to earn the AVCA s top weekly honor since Ethan Pheister picked it up during the 2010 season. The award marks the 13th time a BSU student-athlete has been recognized as the AVCA National Player of the Week. Vander Meer earns the MIVA nod for the first time in his career and he is the first Cardinal to be recognized by the conference this season. The junior got under a career-high 22 digs against the Mastodons which was the first time a BSU men s volleyball player had over 20 digs since Billy Ebel tallied 20 against Grand Canyon on Jan. 21, Nights in Fort Wayne Three Cardinals earned double doubles against the Mastodons on Jan. 31 and 11 career bests were set on the night. Marcin Niemczewski led the way earning career-highs in kills (22), attempts (50), assists (2), digs (16), assisted blocks (7) and total blocks (1). was credited with a career-high 10 assisted blocks and finished with a career-best 12 total blocks. Shane Witmer and finished with career-highs in attack attempts with 35 and 13, respectively. The Doctor Is In Junior libero David Ryan Vander Meer got under a career-high 22 digs against then-no. 14 IPFW. The junior passed 29 balls on the night committing only one error. Vander Meer has 88 passes this year for a.932 reception percentage. Newcomers Earn Playing Time Fifteen Cardinals saw time in Ball State s 3-0 win against McKendree on Friday, Jan. 24, including five newcomers. Sophomore setter Hiago Garchet and freshman setter Connor Gross both got to play a set each against the Bearcats. Garchet picked up 10 assists while Gross added six. Sophomore outside hitter Mike Scannell had an efficient night with seven kills off nine attempts for a.667 attack percentage. Freshman middle hitter Alex Pia played two sets and earned two kills, a dig, a solo block and two assisted blocks. Freshman outside hitter Brendan Surane added two kills. Switching it Up Junior outside attacker Shane Witmer transitioned to a new role for the Cardinals in matches against Sacred Heart and Saint Francis - the libero position. In his two matches at libero, Witmer picked up 12 digs. The junior passed 56 balls with two reception errors. Preseason Nods The Cardinals saw several preseason honors bestowed on its senior leaders. Matt Leske and were named Off the Block/Springbak, Inc., Preseason Second Team All-Americans. Leske was also named to the Preseason All-MIVA Team. earned a spot on the inaugural Lloy Ball Award Watch List. The Cardinals earned 17 votes in the AVCA Division I-II Coaches Top 15 Poll and were picked to finish tied for fifth in the MIVA as voted on by league coaches. How the Stats Stacked Up After 2013 The Cardinals finished the 2013 campaign ranked first in Division I-II in blocks per set (3.05) and digs per set (10.74). and patrolled the middle with Leske ranked first (1.43) and Owens ranked fifth (1.33) in blocks per set. Owens also turned in a.402 season hitting percentage in 2013 which was the second-best in the nation.

Additionally, Pia and Surane have seen action as members of the USA Youth National Team. Reigning Wisconsin Player of the Year and state champion Connor Gross joins the team as well as transfer Hiago Garchet to compliment McIlvaine in the setting position. Garchet spent time on the Brazilian Youth National Team as well as participating in the Brazilian National Tournament.
