The University of Hawai i men s volleyball team will close out the regular season with a pair of Mountain Pacific Sports Federation matches against No. 14 California Baptist, Friday, April 8 and Saturday, April 9 at the Stan Sheriff Center. Both matches begin at 7:00 p.m. Saturday s match is Senior Night and at the conclusion of the contest, Sinisa Siki Zarkovic, Kolby Kanetake, and Brandon Hiehle will be honored during the traditional senior ceremony. The Rainbow Warriors (14-11, 9-11 MPSF) enter the series having already clinched the No. 7 seed in next week s MPSF Tournament. The Lancers (14-14, 6-14) are tied with CSUN and UC Irvine and are battling for the final spot in the eight-team tourney. UH dropped a pair of matches to No. 7 UC Santa Barbara last week and slipped one spot to No. 9 in this week s AVCA rankings. The Warriors have secured the No. 7 seed in this year s tournament and will face the No. 2 seed next Saturday in a quarterfinal round match-up. The top four spots are up for grabs entering the final week of the regular season. Currently, top-ranked BYU and third-ranked Stanford share the MPSF lead at 17-3, while UCLA and Long Beach State are tied for third at UH is a combined 1-7 against those teams with its only win over UCLA. MIDDLE OF THE PACK: UH has solidified its spot in the conference standings this season and its record proves it. Against teams 1-6 in the standings, the Warriors are 2-10 with wins over Pepperdine (Jan. 16) and UCLA (Feb. 5). Against teams in the bottom half (8-12), Hawai i owns a 7-1 mark with its only loss to USC (Feb. 15). SAVING THE BEST FOR LAST: Senior outside hitter Sinisa Siki Zarkovic is having the best season of his career in 2016, leading the team with a 4.01 kill average while hitting at a.308 clip, both career-bests. Earlier this season, he became the 16th player in school history to reach 1,000 career kills and his 1,256 kills ranks eighth all-time. The Belgrade, Serbia native has double-figure kill totals in 21 of 25 matches this season, with six over 20, including a career-best 25 kills on back-toback nights versus UC Irvine two weeks ago. He also boasts a career-best average of 1.57 digs per set and his 2,831 career kill attempts ranks fifth all-time. His 4.01 kills per set average ranks third in the MPSF and ninth nationally. DIGGIN IT: Senior libero Kolby Kanetake is slowly moving up the charts on the school s all-time digs list. His 757 career digs is third all-time behind only career leader Ric Cervantes (936) and Alfred Reft (815). The Honolulu native is averaging 2.29 digs per set during his career which ranks sixthbest. In 24 matches this season, the senior has 214 digs for a 2.38 per set average which ranks second in the MPSF and 14th nationally. Last season, Kanetake recorded 305 digs (2.88 avg.), which tied for the second highest single-season total during the school s rally-scoring era. QUITE FRANKLY: Freshman Nainoa Frank has assumed one of the starting middle blocker spots having made six straight starts. Last weekend, he recorded eight kills each against UC Santa Barbara and did not commit an error in 24 combined swings, hitting.800 the first night and.571 in the rematch ( ,.667 for the series). In fact, he hasn t committed an error in his last three matches and has only one in his last five (54 attempts), including a current streak of 34 errorless attacks. The Kane ohe, O ahu native had his most productive offensive outing in the UC Irvine opener with 10 kills on 13 swings, hitting.692 and also served up an ace. In the rematch, he posted his highest blocking total of the season with five stuffs. On the year, the freshman leads the team with a.527 hitting percentage and is averaging 1.61 kills and 0.78 blocks per set. JOLTIN JOE: Freshman setter Joe Worsley has taken over the starting setter role having made seven straight starts and nine total this season. As the starting setter, Worsley has led the Warriors to their top two percentages this season at CSUN (March 11) and.475 versus UC Irvine (March 26). During the team s recent four-match win streak, Worsley directed UH to a.396 clip while averaging 10.8 assists per set. Senior Sinisa Zarkovic benefitted the most during the win streak with a 4.82 kill average on.444 hitting. Following the two-match series sweep of UC Irvine two weeks ago, Worsley was named the Off The Block National Freshman of the Week after averaging 10.0 assists per set and leading UH to a.387 combined hitting percentage. FROSH SENSATION: After a phenomenal start to the season in which he earned national freshman of the week twice in the first month, opposite Stijn van Tilburg has cooled in the second half of the season before picking it back up over UH s last few series. The Amsterdam, Netherlands native blasted a career-best 27 kills on.479 hitting in the team s five-set win over UC Irvine (March 26). He has reached double figures in five of the past seven matches and is currently second on the team with a 3.41 kill average. He also leads the team with 17 service aces while also averaging 1.26 digs and 0.62 blocks per set. After reaching double figures in kills in his first seven collegiate matches, van Tilburg has 17 this season including two 20-plus kills. In his UH debut, van Tilburg had 14 kills, with no errors, in 15 attempts (.933) versus King (Tenn.) in the Outrigger Resorts Invitational. He has hit.400 or better five times. ROSE IN BLOOM: Reserve outside hitter/serving specialist Brett Rosenmeier has played a key role off the bench for the Rainbow Warriors this season including a pair of matches on the road against UC Santa Barbara last week. In last weekend s series, the freshman tallied seven kills a piece, including hitting.364 in the rematch. Two weeks ago versus UC Irvine, the Virginia Beach, Va., native served up his first aces of the season, tallying two in the opener and three in the rematch. For the year, Rosenmeier has appeared in 16 matches, averaging 0.90 kills and 0.51 digs per set, while hitting.279. PROTECT THIS HOUSE: The Warriors snapped a five-match Stan Sheriff Center losing streak with a pair of wins over UC Irvine two weeks ago. 3 HEAD COACH CHARLIE WADE 7th season Alma Mater: CS Fullerton, 1991 In six seasons as head coach of the University of Hawai i, Charlie Wade has led the Rainbow Warriors to one NCAA Tournament and four Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Tournament appearances. Last season, UH had one of its best seasons in school history, finishing with a 24-7 mark - the most wins since and reaching as high as No. 1 in the nation - a first since The Rainbow Warriors received an at-large bid to the NCAA Play-In Match, their first national appearance since In 2014, Wade guided the Warriors to a mark and a record in the MPSF, which surprisingly was not enough to qualify for the postseason tournament. The season included five wins over teams ranked in the top four nationally, including two-match sweeps of No. 3 UCLA and MPSF champion and No. 2 BYU and a win over NCAA semifinalist Penn State. After rebounding from a disappointing 7-20 season in 2012, Wade guided the Warriors back to the postseason in 2013 and not for a controversial call at match point in the fifth set against the Cougars in that quarterfinal match, UH may have pulled off the most improbable upset in tournament history. In 2011, Wade guided the Warriors to their second straight MPSF Tournament appearance and finished fifth in the final league standings. Prior to Wade s arrival, UH had missed postseason play the previous two seasons and suffered through three straight losing seasons. In his inaugural year as coach, Wade led the Warriors to a mark and a trip to the MPSF Tournament semifinals for the first time since UH doubled its win total from the previous year and snapped a two-year postseason drought. UH sports all-time records of (.674) overall and (.668) in MPSF play since REPRESENTING THE USA: Junior outside hitter Kupono Fey and setter Jennings Franciskovic had quite a summer, touring with the U.S. Junior National Team to a pair of international tournaments. Fey and Franciskovic helped Team USA claim silver at the 2015 U21 Pan American Cup in Canada and an 11th place finish at the U21 World Championships in Tijuana, Mexico. The duo spent nearly two weeks training at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Lake Placid, N.Y. before making the trek up to host nation Canada for the Pan Am Cup, where they lost to Brazil in the gold-medal match. After a few weeks off, the pair returned to U.S. MJNT action, at the FIVB World Championship in Mexico but landed in the toughest opening pool, dropping three-straight matches to Russia, Argentina, and Poland. Team USA rallied in the consolation pool to take 11th, its same finish as THE BEST IN THE NATION: Through 15 home matches this season, Hawai i is averaging 3,589 per contest, second nationally to BYU (3,998). UH drew a season-high 5,436 against No. 1 UCLA. Last season, Hawai i regained the title as national attendance leader (3,671), the program s highest average since 2006 (4,231).
