The Rockets travel to Muncie, Ind. on Thursday, Nov. 2 to take on Ball State at 7:00 p.m. before a Saturday evening match at Buffalo at 6:00 p.m. For the third straight week and the fourth time this season, Maurissa Leonard was named MAC West Defensive Player of the Week. She averaged an even 6.00 digs per set over the weekend, tallying 22 against Eastern Michigan and 26 against Central Michigan. She started both matches off strong, registering 10 digs in the first set both nights. Welcome to the Club In the first set against Eastern Michigan last Friday, Saige Thomas recorded the 1,000th kill of her career, becoming the tenth player in school history to reach that benchmark. The termination came at a crucial point, bringing the first frame to a set point that helped put Toledo in a good position to win the set. This year Thomas is averaging 2.84 kills per set and has averaged 2.54 per set during her career as a Rocket. Tournament Time Entering this weekend, the Rockets are holding on to the eighth and final spot for the 2017 Mid-American Conference tournament. Should Toledo advance on to postseason play, it would be the second straight year it has earned a berth in the MAC Tournament. Coming into Thursday s match, UT is tied with Northern Illinois with a 6-6 mark in conference play and Central Michigan trails close behind at 5-7. CMU owns the tiebreaker over Toledo and NIU currently does as well, but with three interdivisional matches remaining for the Rockets there is plenty of time to lock up a trip to Oxford. Last Time Out In its final two home matches of 2017, Toledo defeated Eastern Michigan in straight sets, 3-0, before falling to Central Michigan in a five-set thriller the following night. Saige Thomas tallied 14 kills against the Eagles while both Annie Beasley and Rachel Vidourek added nine apiece. Carly Townsend tallied 42 assists, a team-high this season for a three-set match. Maurissa Leonard had 22 digs and Andrea Stephenson added 11, while both Vidourek (.421) and Beasley (.400) both had efficient nights offensively. Seniors Thomas and Beasley led the team with 19 and 14 kills, respectively, while Zoe Birnbrich added 11. Carly Townsend tied a season-high with 52 assists, and three Rockets reached double-digits in digs: Maurissa Leonard (26), Andrea Stephenson (15), and Lauren Bakaitis (12). For the weekend, Thomas led the team with 4.12 kills per set and Beasley hit a team-best.396. Leonard averaged 6.00 digs per set and Townsend averaged assists per set. By the Numbers Leonard is inching closer to becoming the all-time digs leader at Toledo. She has 1,615 during her career, just 121 away from tying the career mark set by Lora Sarich (1,736). She is also just 31 away from breaking her own single-season record she set in 2016 (569). She has now had at least 500 digs in each of her first three seasons. The junior libero has also climbed up the national ranks lately. Leonard has averaged 7.26 digs per set in her last six matches and now ranks eighth in the country in total digs (539) and second in the MAC. Her 6.26 digs/set in league play rank only behind NCAA digs leader Kallie Seimet from Bowling Green. Beasley (.346) and Vidourek (.322) are fourth and sixth, respectively, in the MAC in hitting percentage. Beasley is also on pace to break UT s single-season hitting percentage mark (.336, Dakota Harkins in 2013). Carly Townsend missed most of 11 matches in September due to an injury, but since returning to the starting lineup on Sept. 28 she has averaged assists per set. Her 52 assists against Central Michigan last Saturday tied a season-high. Thomas had 33 kills last weekend, the most in a conference weekend for her this season. Zoe Birnbrich is coming of her best weekend of the season; she hit.341 and averaged 2.12 kills per set and a team-high 0.88 blocks per set. Earlier this season against Western Michigan, Beasley recorded 10 total blocks, just the seventh double-digit block game by a Rocket in school history. Last Meeting with Ball State Earlier this season, the Cardinals were Toledo s first MAC victim in a match UT won 3-0 at home. Saige Thomas had a great night, tallying 15 kills to lead all comers; her individual termination total was the highest for UT this season in a three-set match. She had three blocks on the night, one of four Rockets to have at least that many: Rachel Vidourek had six, Carly Townsend had four, and Annie Beasley had three. Maurissa Leonard had a team-high 18 digs and Rhyen Neal recorded 10, her third double-digit dig output of the season. Townsend also tied for the matchhigh with 35 assists. Last Meeting with Buffalo You d have to go back to 2016 for the last meeting between these two teams. Almost a year to the day, Nov. 5, 2016, the Rockets and Bulls played five sets at Savage Arena in a match Buffalo would go on to win, 3-2. Saige Thomas led the team that night with 13 kills, Rachel Vidourek had 12, and two former rockets each had 11: Mary O Connor and Gracey Tuifua. Carly Townsend added 51 assists to the cause. Western Michigan has done it twice and Kent State did it once. Home Sweet Home The Rockets just concluded a four-game homestand that ended a stretch in which they played eight of ten matches at home. The last time they played eight of ten matches at home at any point was in Dual Threat When Beasley won MAC West Defensive Player of the Week honors on Oct. 8 she became the first MAC player this season to earn both Offensive and Defensive POTW awards. The Indianapolis, Ind. native was named Offensive POTW back on Sept. 18. The last player to win both Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week in the same season was NIU s Jenna Ratdke in Keep It 100 With Toledo s 3-0 win over Kent State on Saturday, Oct. 14, head coach Greg Smith won his 100th match at Toledo, the fastest head coach in program history to reach that benchmark. Keeping Em Close to Home Head Coach Greg Smith and the Toledo Rocket Volleyball program made it an emphasis on keeping players close to home as seven players on the roster live within 150 miles. There are 10 players that grew up within 200 miles of Toledo. Toledo Runs in the Family For freshman Chloee Kleespies, playing Toledo Volleyball runs in the family as Chloee s older sister, Cassie played for the Rockets from 2008 to MAC Championship The 2017 Mid-American Conference Tournament will be held on the campus of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, November 16 through November 19 at John D.
