Taylor Root (410, 5.06) FIRST SERVE After giving League-leading Milwaukee all it could handle last Friday night, Loyola opens a busy week with a Tuesday night match against Cleveland State. It will be the Ramblers first look at the Vikings this season, who currently sit in second place in the standings. Loyola wraps up the week with a pair of short road trips to Valpo and UIC. Muscat arrived in Rogers Park after a two-year stint as an assistant coach at Missouri, where he helped the Tigers advance to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament last year. He began his collegiate coaching career in 2007 at Stanford, under the guidance of legendary coach John Dunning, after a stellar playing career at UCLA (Class of 2001), where he was part of two national championship teams (1998, 2000). He got his first coaching win on Sept. 4 against Montana State and brings a 4-13 (.235) record into play this week. THE CLEVELAND STATE SERIES Tuesday night will be the 41st meeting between the conference foes, with Loyola holding a lead in the all-time series. Loyola has gotten the better of the Vikings, historically, in Rogers Park, winning 13 of the 16 meetings. The Ramblers were dominant over a 10- year period from , winning all 10 meetings here while dropping just three sets in the process. However, since Cleveland State broke through in 2005, the teams have alternated wins in the Windy City, with LU earning an impressive 3-1 win in this fixture last season. THE VALPARAISO SERIES Loyola and Valparaiso get together for the 38th time on Friday night with the Ramblers holding a edge in the all-time series. However, Valpo has had the better of the rivalry lately, winning 10 of the last 11 meetings, including a 3-0 sweep in the first meeting this season. Loyola has beaten Valpo just once since the Crusaders joined the Horizon League for the 2007 season, earning a five-set win in the final match at Alumni Gym last season. Sarah Dooms had a match-high 13 kills to lead Valpo in the first meeting on Sept. 24. Laura Purcell had nine kills and five blocks to lead the Ramblers but hit just.000 (9-9-31). THE UIC SERIES Saturday afternoon s clash with UIC will be the 59th meeting between the city foes with the Ramblers holding a lead in the series. However, Loyola is looking to snap a three-match losing streak to the Flames after UIC notched its first-ever season sweep of LU last season and tacked on a tough four-set win earlier this season at the Halas Sports Center. Kelsey Safranek hit only.096 but still managed a match-high 17 kills to lead UIC in that match. Laura Purcell and Mary Kate Styler combined for 28 kills to highlight the Loyola offense. HAPPY BUS RIDE Loyola killed two birds with one win, notching its first Horizon League win and its first true road win of the season with a 3-1 win at Wright State. The Ramblers hit a seasonbest.291 and received 17 kills from Laura Purcell en route to the victory. THE KIDS CAN PLAY Loyola s early-season lineup has been dominated by freshmen, as the Ramblers have routinely featured four rookies on the floor at the same time. The group has slowly matured through the first half of the Horizon League season and has accounted for a majority of the team s scoring with the five freshmen notching 457 of the squad s 680 kills this season (67.2%). PLENTY OF PURCELL Freshman hitter Laura Purcell has established herself as one of the Horizon League s top newcomers and has been the leader of the Rambler offense for much of the year. The Louisville, Ky. native drilled a season-high 19 kills against Youngstown State and pounded out 17 more in Loyola s win over Wright State. In all, Purcell has led Loyola in kills in 12 of its 17 matches this season, including all eight conference matches.

Built in 1923, the venerable old Alumni Gym housed the Rambler volleyball program since its inception, with its low ceiling and cozy bleachers creating a daunting homecourt advantage that helped LU post a (.711) record from Loyola will play in Halas this season before moving into Gentile Arena in STYLER STYMIED BY HORIZON LEAGUE Freshman Mary Kate Styler has put together a solid rookie season thus far, however, like many freshmen, has experienced some ups-and-downs. While she has reached double figures in kills in 10 of her last 12 matches, her efficiency has gone down a bit in Loyola s seven Horizon League matches, as illustrated below. Purcell currently leads all Horizon League freshmen, and ranks seventh overall, with 3.10 kills per set with Styler checking in third among freshmen with 2.74 kps. Only once in program history (accurate stats available from 1988-present) has a freshman led the Ramblers in kills, with Sarah Poglits accomplishing the feat in Listed below are the best offensive seasons by freshmen in Loyola history (sorted by kills per set) and where Purcell and Styler rank. Languido recorded a career-high 34 digs in Loyola s narrow loss to Green Bay, a performance that ties her with Alyse Serritella for second on the Ramblers singlematch list, and has recorded an impressive 5.32 digs per set in Horizon League play this season. Overall, Languido ranks fifth in the Horizon League with 4.29 digs per set for the year, a position that moves up to second in conference matches. DIANA BACK IN THE SWING OF THINGS For just the third time this season, Diana Schulte played all six rotations and recorded seven kills last Friday against Milwaukee. Battling an injury that sidelined her for three weeks and limited her to back row-only duties for seven matches, Schulte was hitting for just the third time this year and first since the DePaul match on Sept. 3. Loyola s top returnee and one of the more dynamic hitters in the Horizon League, Schulte gives the Ramblers more firepower on the outside. WROBEL RUNNING THE SHOW Fellow freshman Vicki Wrobel has also performed admirably this season after being thrust into the setter role due to Natalie Fiore s injury. Wrobel dished out a season-best 51 assists in Loyola s win over Oakland and has shown steady improvement as the season has worn on. She notched a pair double-doubles recently, capped by equaling her season-high with 13 digs in the win over Wright State. In addition, Wrobel has also given the Ramblers a presence at the service line as her 24 service aces (0.39 aps) are tops in the Horizon League.
