1 BOUNDBALL STUDY GUIDE Name Date Period Introduction Boundball is volleyball but the ball MUST BOUNCE every time before playing it. There are many similarities such as the skills, the rules, and the scoring. The nets are lowered and the game can generally be played on a tennis court. This game can be used as a lead up to volleyball and is especially enjoyable to beginners. History Research was done in an attempt to find where this game came from. No luck as of yet Does anyone know where Boundball came from? Object of the Game The object of boundball is to reach 25 points before the other team does. A team must win by two (2) points. For example: if the score is 25-24, one more point must be won by the team with 25 in order to win that game If the team that has 24 points wins the rally and ties it up at 25-25, one team must score two consecutive points to win. Each team must keep track of their score. All players will call the score before they serve. In P.E. we will play a game until 25 (win by 2) and if time allows, we will begin a second game. When a second game occurs but, due to time cannot be completed, the team with the highest combined score of the two games will be the winner of the match. Games will continue until the teacher blows the whistle to end class. Volleyball Skills Allowed Serving Passing/digging Setting Spiking (hitting/attacking) Volleyball Skills NOT Allowed Blocking Skills and Techniques: The Serve: Serving is the skill used to put the ball into play. The basic rules of serving are simple: do not step on the boundary line, remember to let the ball bounce first, and get the ball over the net and in bounds. It is OK for the serve to hit the net; the ball is still live as long as it goes over the net. The underhand serve is the best type of serve allowed in boundball. The ball is held in the non-dominant hand down and in front of the hitting arm (dominant hand) even with the bellybutton. The server takes a backswing with the hitting arm, drops the ball to let it bounce, steps forward toward the ball with the nondominant foot, swings the hitting hand forward and strikes the ball. The most effective way to make contact is with a fist, using the heel of the hand and the clenched fingers. Strike the ball behind and underneath it. Follow through with the hitting hand and arm in the direction you want the ball to go in. 1

2 The Forearm Pass or Bump: The bump or pass is used for receiving serves and spikes. When the ball is served, the player who will pass the ball gets into position behind and under the ball but be sure to leave enough room for the bounce. Keep your feet apart and knees bent. The arms come together with the elbows, wrists and hands together evenly forming a solid platform. The ball bounces off the platform (any point between the wrists and elbows) and is directed toward a target up near the net where the setter is positioned. The passer should always follow through with his platform in the direction that he wants the ball to go in. The purpose of the pass is to get the ball to the setter who will then direct the ball to the attacker. The Overhead Pass or Set: The primary purpose of the set is to set-up an offensive attack. It is usually the second hit on the offensive team s side. The first ball is bumped or passed however a set (aka an overhead pass) can also be used to receive a serve and the second hit should be a set. The setter will be the person in the position in the middle at the net, the middle front position. When setting, the player positions him/herself under the ball after it bounces with knees and hips slightly bent. His body is perpendicular with the net. The ball is received into open hands at the forehead. The ball contacts the pads of the fingers and thumbs, no palms. By pushing the ball and straightening the hips, knees and arms at the same time, the ball will go in the air along the net so it can be spiked. A setter s hands should always follow through in the direction he/she wants the ball to go in. The Spike: The spike (also called a hit or attack) requires a player stand or jump and hit the ball over the net. Generally, a spike is hit with an open hand. In beginners, the ball often goes out of bounds or into the net. Practice in the arm swing and contact are required to spike correctly. A spiked ball, hit properly should go down. A spiker should always be sure to watch their hand make contact with the ball in order to avoid miss hitting it or missing it altogether. Make sure you let the ball bounce before you hit it. Scoring Rally scoring will be used for boundball. Rally scoring means that a point is scored after every play. After every play a point is awarded to the team that won that rally. Whoever earns the point gets to serve. If your team served and your team earns the point, the same server continues to serve until the other team earns a point. At that time the other team would get the serve and keep it until your team earns a point. Each team will rotate when they regain their serve back from the opposing team by scoring a point. 2

3 Game play To begin a game the team that won the coin toss (or rock, paper, scissors) will select serve or side. If choose serve, that team serves first the other team will choose what side of the net to play. After a game to 25 both teams will change sides of the net. If team A served first in game one then team B will serve first in game two. If a game 3 is needed, captains will repeat the coin toss (rock, paper, scissors) to determine serve and side. Each team is allowed up to three hits to send the ball back over the net to the other team. It is recommended that each team try to use the pass, set, and hit method. This will encourage offensive and defensive strategies to be used. A team does not have to use all 3 hits. It is fine if the ball goes over on the first or second hit. A team may not use more than 3 hits. No one can touch the net. ANY TIME A PLAYER TOUCHES THE NET it is a violation and the opposing team will receive the point and the ball to serve. You also may not REACH OVER the net to play a ball when the ball is in play on the other side. This is a violation and will result in a point for the other team. If you try to save a ball going over the net on a bounce from your side, it is fine to reach over the net to poke it over. If you swing to hit a ball and the follow-through of your arm goes over the net, this is legal also. It is always OK for the ball to touch the net. If the ball touches the net and goes over, it is a playable ball. To initiate play, use the serve. First you must bounce the ball on the ground and attempt to hit the ball over the net. It is legal if the ball touches the net and goes over on a serve. The opposing team should try to play the ball. The server must serve from behind the end line (the back of the court). If the server steps on or over the line it is a foot fault. The other team wins the point and the serve and will rotate. After the serve crosses the net the other team must let it bounce and then try to pass it. It is strategically better to use all three hits to set up an attack versus hitting it over on the first hit. The passer after it bounces, passes to the setter. The setter lets it bounce and sets it to the hitter. The hitter lets it bounce and spikes it over the net. The other team must let the ball bounce and then play the ball. As long as the ball bounces within the lines of the court (including on the line) it is playable. In other words, if a player spikes the ball and it bounces inside the court and then goes way outside the boundary line, the defense must try to get to the ball and play it before it bounces a second time. As long as the first bounce on your side of the net is in bounds, a team may play the ball all the way up to the fence or another court. What will END A PLAY (aka Dead Ball) and result in a point. 1. More than 3 hits to get the ball over the net. 2. A ball landing out of bounds before bouncing once in bounds. 3. A ball bouncing twice or more than twice. 4. A missed serve. 5. A player touching the net. 6. A player reaching over the net to play a ball on the opponents side of the net. 7. An illegal hit (catch, carry, throw, dunk, etc.) 8. A ball bouncing over the net. A person must hit it over the net. 9. A kicked ball (nothing below the waist is legal). 10. A ball that touches a player before bouncing. 11. A ball that touches the fence or enters a neighboring court. 3

4 Officiating In physical education, each team will be responsible for self-officiating. Therefore, it is important to be honest about calls. Players who commit fouls are expected to call their own mistakes. Or if the other team calls the foul, it must be honored. This includes any net violations (touching of the net). When there is a disagreement on a play, a replay should be called. Safety Rules: 1. Pay attention 2. No touching the nets (leaning, sitting, etc.) 3. No jumping over the nets 4. No kicking the balls 5. Call ball when a ball is rolling onto a court and DON T JUMP when you hear ball 6. Stop play when teacher blows the whistle 7. No jewelry 8. Always warm-up Playing Area The only lines on the tennis court that are important in boundball are the boundary lines, the lines surrounding the outside of the court. The rest are insignificant in this game. If a ball touches a line, it is considered inbounds and playable. A server must serve from behind the baseline/endline. You may not step on or over the line when serving. When receiving a ball, the first bounce must be in bounds. If the first bounce goes in and your teammate plays the ball and then it bounces out of bounds, it is still a playable ball. Your team still has two more hits to get the ball back over the net and in bounds. As long as the first bounce on your side of the net is in bounds, a team may play the ball all the way up to the fence or another court using the three hits to get it over. Options for set up depends on the number of people on each team.
