2 THE TEAM a) Each team consists of six (6) players with a maximum of two (2) substitutes. b) In the case of mixed volleyball, there may be no more than three (3) males. c) For a game to start a team must have at least four (4) players. THE GAME a) The duration of a game is 50 minutes. b) Each team is permitted three (3) contacts (in addition to a block) before returning the ball over the net. c) The ball may not be carried, thrown, lifted or pushed - it must be hit cleanly. d) A player may not have two (2) hits in a row except when performing a block. SERVICE a) Both feet must be behind the baseline before serving. b) The ball is permitted to hit the net and go over during service. c) Points are won on a rally point system regardless who is serving whoever wins the rally wins the point. d) When a team receiving wins the right of service it shall rotate one (1) position clockwise. GENERAL a) The ball cannot hit the roof or any obstacles / fixtures outside the court perimeter. Doing so will result in loss of point or service. b) Any person contacting the centre net during the course of play shall result in the opposing team winning serve and a point. c) The dividing net between both courts cannot be jumped into. This is a safety issue and not allowed. UNIFORMS All players of the team must have matching t-shirts by the commencement of week three. Shirts must have sleeves. No singlet tops, muscle tops or denim is permitted on the court at ANY time. Nor shall any footwear which is not deemed to be a sports shoe. Penalty - 1 point per offending player. 1.

3 FIVE BASIC SKILLS 1 2 The game consists of 5 basic skills: SERVE The act of putting the ball into play, executed from the backline, over the net by an overhead or under arm action. Men are not allowed to handball the serve. Women are allowed to handball if they wish. RECIEVE First touch of the ball, usually executed with the forearms (dig) set using fingertips or bunt, the object being pass the ball to a frontline player close to the net. 3 4 SET The act of setting the ball up for an attacking hit by volleying the ball into the air, using the fingertips. The ball may spin in a forward or backward rotation. SPIKE The most common attacking shot, the player jumping up to hit the set into the opponent s court. 5 BLOCK A defensive action performed by jumping up with both hands above and over the net attempting to prevent the spike from entering the court. 2

4 GENERAL PLAY Front court players: Only the three (3) front court players are allowed to attack the ball at the net. Backcourt players: Backcourt players are not permitted to pass the three (3) metre and spike or attack the ball into the opponents court this means blocking aswell. However they are permitted to enter the front and set the ball for an attacking shot. Centre line: Players are not permitted to step over the centre line, if the foot or hand clearly passes the centre line this will be deemed a foul, as long as part of the foot or hand touches the centre line this is ok. Roof: the ball may hit the roof on your side if it does not pass the vertical plain and stays on your side play is allowed to continue. The ball is not permitted to hit the roof on your side and carry over the net into the opposition s side. Lines : if any part of the ball touches the lines it is classified as in. Blocking: Blocking is an action of interrupting any flights of the ball when it is coming from the opponent s court. Blocking can only be performed by a player(s) on the frontline. Any player participating in a block which contacts the ball shall have the right to make a second contact. Such a second contact however shall count as the first of three hits allowed by a team. If the ball touches one or more players in a block, it will be counted as only one hit for the team, even if the contacts are not made simultaneously by the players participating in the block. The hands of the blocker(s) may reach over the net provided the opposing team have made their allotted three contacts with the ball. When the ball, having touched the top of the net and the opponents block, returns to the attacker s side, the players of this team have the right to another three hits. Antennas: The ball must pass inside both antennas and is not allowed to hit the antennas at any time or pass outside the antennas. Always return the ball to the opposition under the net. Do not kick the ball under the net as this is a safety issue. GAME FEES The game fee is set at $60.00 per team, regardless of how many players are in attendance. The game fee MUST be paid prior to the commencement of the game. Play will not start until the game fee is paid, however the clock will start at the correct time. 3.

5 REGISTRATION The entry fee of $60.00 per team must be paid by the given date. The registration fee is a once-only fee for each season and ensures all players are registered players of the YMCA Leisure City hardcourt volleyball competition. LATE ARRIVALS If a team does not have at least four (4) players present and the game fee is not paid in full, then the team will be penalised one (1) point for each minute that the team is not ready to commence play. Once a team does have four (4) players present then a late player may enter the court when the rally is over and a sub is called. If at least four (4) players are not present by the end of the first 15 minutes, then the game is deemed a forfeit. FORFIETS A team forfeiting a fixtured game runs the risk of being replaced in competition. Any team forfeiting a game automatically incurs a forfeit fee of $60.00 which is to be paid before that teams next fixtured game. A team forfeiting two (2) games in a row will be removed from the competition. GAME CHANGES Game changes are not allowed. If a team is unable to play a fixtured game, they will incure a forfeit fee of $60.00 which is to be paid before that teams next fixtured game. This ensures all teams complete their full complement of games for the season, and to assist in player qualifications towards finals. 4.

6 FINALS A finals fixture will be distributed approximately three (3) to four (4) weeks prior to the last game of the season. The top four (4) teams in each grade will play-off in finals which will be played over a two week period. A team may not forfeit a finals game. To be eligible to play in finals, a player must have played at least five games of the season, excluding byes and wins on forfeits. A team may only participate in finals if they are completely financial. Any game fees owing and forfeit fees must be paid in full at least two (2) complete rounds before finals commence. UMPIRES Players should respect the decision of the umpire as being final. The only person that may approach the umpire is the team captain. Any disputes are to be lodged with Management at the end of the game and only by the captain. POINTS SYSTEM WIN 4 Points DRAW 2 Points LOSS 1 Points forfeit / BYE 4 Points Rules valid as at January
