2 2008 SEASON OUTLOOK The Presbyterian College volleyball team enters its third season under the direction of head coach Chris Belshe, and the program is looking to continue to experience the growth it has seen under Belshe s influence. The Blue Hose return five starters and nine letter winners from last year s squad, which finished its first year at Division I with a record of The returning players include three year starters Rachel Lewis and Justine Lanchester, and the Preseason All- Big South selection Kelsey McKee. Seniors Amanda Davis and Heather Swain bring their experience back to the court, along with sophomores Elizabeth Heineman, Amanda Kettles, Ashley Dunlap and Carolyn Fabros. The 2008 squad has 19 studentathletes, and is comprised of four seniors, two juniors, six sophomores and seven freshmen. This is a very deep, yet amazingly experienced group, said Belshe. We have twelve student athletes who have a solid amount of experience at the college level. We return three sophomores who played in every single game for us last year and we also have a couple of seniors who have played in almost every game since they arrived on campus as freshmen. The Blue Hose are looking to raise the bar again in 2008, bringing in nine new student athletes. With intense and competitive practices, and a wealth of experience and ability, the PC volleyball team is ready to take the court this season. Setter After three highly successful seasons, PC prepares to hand the setting duties off to Lewis one last time. Playing in all 33 matches last year, Lewis will continue to guide the PC offense this fall. She looks to become the most prolific setter in the history of PC volleyball, as she is currently 150 assists short of becoming the alltime career assist leader. This is Rachel s fourth year running the offense here at P.C. and as a coaching staff we are excited to see how Rachel will use her three years of experience to continue to move this program forward, remarked Belshe. This year the Blue Hose also add depth to the setting position. Dunlap returns to back up Lewis, along with transfer Kilee Ruppe and freshman Maritere Nazario. Outside Hitter While the program suffered a significant loss with the graduation of Lauren Mason, the outside hitter position will be the deepest position in The Blue Hose add three true outside hitters, plus an additional three student athletes who have the potential to play in the frontline. The keys to the position will be the development of Swain, who had a very strong offseason, and the immediate impact of transfer Lisa Shelley. Both have collegiate experience that will help the Blue Hose offense. Freshmen Alesia Paul and Haley Thurmond will also be key contributors to the outside 2

3 hitter position, and the development of freshmen Rachel Rutan and transfer Sarah Twitty will provide even more competition at outside hitter. This is the first year since I took over this program that we have significant depth on the outside. We have several players who will compete everyday for the opportunity to be able to play this year. It is a very unique position to be in and I am excited to work with our outsides on a daily basis and see how they respond to the intense competition for playing time, said Belshe. Middle Blocker PC returns two experienced middles in Lanchester and McKee. The pair saw action in all 33 matches last fall, and will continue to provide the strength at the net for the team. Middle blocker is a position that will be instrumental to the program s continued success and I expect the returning middles to drive our offense, said Belshe. Justine has been a force for this program since she was brought here three years ago, and after a great sophomore campaign we look to Kelsey to continue to improve and begin to become a go to player for us. After an impressive freshman campaign on the right side, Kettles will also see action in the middle this year. Her height and blocking fundamentals will be invaluable in helping the offense score points. Freshman Paige Palanica also brings experience to the middle. Defensive Specialist/Libero The Blue Hose return the bulk of their defense in 2008, looking to Davis, Heineman and Dunlap to provide consistency and leadership for the team. At the libero position, Heineman s ball control and overall strength will help her control the defense and serve receive. Dunlap and Fabros both made great progress in the offseason and will aide Davis in giving PC a tremendous amount of experience in the backcourt. Freshmen Lindsey Harris and Weldon Deas both bring depth to the defensive specialist position, giving the team a very strong defensive base. We have some great defensive players, said Belshe. All across the backrow we have ball control, experience and leadership, which should definitely make an impact this year. Schedule The PC volleyball schedule in 2008 features several strong non-conference opponents along with the full slate of fellow Big South teams. The Blue Hose will travel to tournaments at Georgia Southern, Mercer and Western Carolina before starting their conference schedule at the end of September. I am really excited about our schedule because it gives us great competition while allowing us to stay within a close radius of campus, said Belshe. Playing programs like Auburn, Furman, and UNC Charlotte, along with the great teams in our conference, will make it very challenging to win 20 matches again this year, but we look forward to the challenge. 3

17 CHRIS BELSHE Chris Belshe enters his third year as the head coach of the Presbyterian College volleyball program and continues to lead the Blue Hose through the transition to Division I. In his two years at PC, Belshe has compiled a record of 29-38, with a record of at the Division I level. In 2007 Belshe led the squad to an impressive overall record of 20-13, and a 6-8 record against Big South opponents. Belshe also guided the team to tournament championships at Jacksonville, Wilmington and Western Carolina. By winning 15 straight matches, the 2007 squad moved into second place in the record books for longest winning streaks. The Blue Hose also went undefeated in the month of September and remained unbeaten in 26 straight sets, setting a new school record. Under his influence, the team went 4-0 in five game matches and was one of four schools in the Big South to have a 20 win season (with Liberty, Winthrop and High Point). Belshe is excited about the support and the direction in which the program is headed. Presbyterian College has created an environment of strong athletics and academics so that our student-athletes can really excel, not only on the court but in the classroom. The discipline, work ethic and passion it takes to be a Division I athlete carries over into all aspects of life, and I truly believe all our athletes will be well-prepared for anything they will face in the future. Belshe s first year at PC was severely affected by injuries, and the 2006 squad still managed nine wins. Freshman Julie Hollrah was named to the South Atlantic Conference s All-Freshman team, and setter Rachel Lewis was selected to the Preseason All-SAC First Team. Belshe came to Presbyterian with a veritable background of volleyball coaching experience, having coached at the club, high school and collegiate levels. Prior to joining the Blue Hose, Belshe was the assistant coach for the Spanish River High School boys volleyball team in Boca Raton, Fla. and helped lead the Sharks to a state tournament title. In the fall of 2005, Belshe was a volunteer at Lynn University, training individual student-athletes and organizing practices. Belshe spent almost four years with Illini Elite volleyball club in Bloomington, Ill. and coached at various age levels, ranging from youth to elite high school teams. Three of his teams reached the USAV Junior Olympic Nationals. His 18-and-under squad qualified twice, becoming the first 18- and-under Illini Elite team to qualify for Nationals in All together, Belshe coached the 18-and-under Illini Elite club team from November of 2003 through July of 2005, garnering a slot every year in the list of top-10 regional teams. More impressively, every senior on his 18-and-under team committed to play NCAA Division I volleyball. A native of Wheaton, Ill., Belshe attended Illinois State University and graduated in 2005 with a degree in Finance. He and his wife, Jen, reside in Simpsonville, S.C. 17

18 Assistant Coach MEGAN TRIMPE Megan Trimpe enters her second season as the assistant coach for Presbyterian College s volleyball team. Trimpe s on-court responsibilities are working with the setters, while also serving as Recruiting and Academic Coordinator. A native of Bloomington, Ill., Trimpe graduated Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from Illinois College with a degree in English with a concentration in Creative Writing. She was a four-year letterwinner as a setter on the volleyball team at Illinois College and she holds the career assist record (4,747) for the Lady Blues. Trimpe gained international experience playing a semester at the University of Nottingham while studying abroad. Trimpe also serves as an Assistant Sports Information Director, and is the contact for volleyball and men s and women s tennis. Assistant Coach SCOTT SCHWEIHOFER Scott Schweihofer begins his first season with PC volleyball. Schweihofer s primary duties will be scouting, community involvement and summer camps. From Marysville, Mich., Schweihofer comes to Presbyterian after serving as a student assistant at Michigan State University for one year. He was part of a Spartan staff that compiled a record and advanced to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen in He has also worked several summer camps, including Michigan State, Nebraska and Penn State. Schweihofer spent two seasons (05-06) coaching at Marysville High School (Marysville, Mich.) at both the varsity and junior varsity level. He led the J.V. team to a 12-7 record in 2006, while also helping the varsity team to a 16-7 record and the state championship. 18

In 1880 the Clinton High School Association became first Clinton College, and then in 1890 the Presbyterian College of South Carolina. Coeducational instruction occurred from the start. 23 The Presbyterian College Athletic Department is recognized as having some of the finest athletic facilities in the Southeast. The 16-sport athletic department s athletic facilities include the 2,500-seat Ross E. Templeton Physical Education Center, Callaway Tennis Courts, Edens Field at Martin Soccer Stadium, the PC Baseball Complex, and the PC Softball Complex. Ross E. Templeton Physical Education Center The facility bears the name of the late Ross E. Templeton 24, distinguished alumnus and business leader of Charlotte and Clinton, who was a life-long devotee of PC sports. Completed in 1975, the facility serves as both a sports and academic center. The Furman Pinson Arena seats more than 2,000 spectators for men s and women s basketball as well as volleyball. In 2000, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Staton provided a new floor for the facility. Ample classrooms, multi-purpose space, and equipment serve the physical education instruction program. Adjoining Templeton Center on the Templeton Weight Facility right is the new Johnson-Callaway Center, an 11,500-square-foot addition containing men s and women s locker rooms and 10 coaches offices. Located directly behind this facility is the Kemper D. Lake, M.D. Sports Medicine Center which houses PC s Sports Medicine staff who maintain the health of all Blue Hose athletes. The Mabry-Smith-Yonce Center is the 6,000-square-foot facility adjoining to the left of the Templeton Center that was built in This facility provides meeting space for student organizations, alumni groups, athletic teams, and special events. It also includes a kitchen, restrooms, and a storage area. Templeton Weight Facility Located in the Templeton Center, the new weight room which opened in October of 2004, replaced the facility s racquetball court that was no longer in service. The 38 x 70 addition provides an additional 2,660 square feet of weightlifting area for the college s 16 varsity athletic teams. The original weight room, located at the east end of the Furman B. Pinson Court, provides 2,400 square feet Edens Field at Martin Stadium of workout space that will give the Blue Hose athletic teams the flexibility to work out in both weight room facilities while avoiding scheduling conflicts. The new weight room includes custom equipment designed and installed by ArrowHawk of Laurens, S.C. Templeton Tennis Center Located next to the Ross E. Templeton Center, the Templeton Tennis Center is home for the nationally ranked Blue Hose men s and women s tennis programs. Templeton Courts has served as host for several regular season and postseason events, including hosting the SAC Tennis Championships from Martin Stadium Martin Soccer Stadium, seating approximately 400, was constructed in 2000 by the Kenneth Martin Family, of Greenville, S.C. Dr. Robert M. Edens 77, of Columbia, S.C. provided the soccer playing field. The facility is home for the Blue Hose men s and women s soccer programs which have received national recognition over the years. 24 PC Softball Complex PC Softball Complex The PC Softball Complex is located on the 31-acre Young Intramural Park. This facility is home to the Blue Hose Softball program and was built in 1997 when the sport was still at club level. The facility has a new scoreboard located behind the rightfield fence which was donated by Pepsi-Cola of Greenville, S.C., prior to the 2005 season. Behind the scoreboard are batting cages, while the complex also has three other softball fields which can be used for practice or tournament competition. The complex has served host to many tournaments, including the Food Lion/ SAC Tournament from and in Johnson Field at Old Bailey Stadium Johnson Field was named for Walter A. Johnson, who came to Presbyterian College in 1915 when he was 22 and served as coach and athletic director for 43 years. President John McSween dedicated Bailey Stadium at the opening home football game of the 1928 season. The 3,000 seat facility, which is now used as the home site by the Blue Hose men and women s lacrosse teams, resulted mainly from a $10,000 gift from W.J. Bailey, Clinton banker and industrialist, as a memorial to his son William Cyrus Bailey, The Bailey Foundation provided for the Johnson Field at Old Bailey Stadium renovation of the track and stadium in The facility served as the home field for the Blue Hose football program from its opening prior to the 1928 season until the first two games of the 2002 season. During that time, the Blue Hose compiled a record of PC Baseball Complex The Presbyterian College baseball team plays its home games at one of the most attractive facilities in South Carolina, the PC Baseball Complex. The Complex is located at the eastern end of the college campus and was built in the late 1980 s. The facility has served as host to numerous postseason events at the collegiate and high school level over the years. The complex boasts a covered batting facility down the first base line and a 10-inning scoreboard located behind the leftfield fence. Bailey Memorial Stadium During the 2002 season, Presbyterian PC Baseball Complex College opened the new 6,500- seat Bailey Memorial Stadium. This state-of-the-art facility features a multi-level press box, a spacious field house, and concession stands for home and visiting fans. Guarding the entrance to Bailey Memorial Stadium is a 15-foot statue, which was graciously donated by Mr. Irwin Belk, of the Blue Hose mascot, nicknamed Cyrus Bailey. Scotsman Club members will have the opportunity to watch exciting Blue Hose football from the loggia level, which has open access to the home stands and a superb view of the playing field. The third story of the press box is the president s level. Special guests will enjoy Blue Hose football from the plush surroundings of the private president s box. Also located on this level is the game operations box, home and visiting radio booths which are located on each end of this level, and the sports information box. The top level of the press box is the film level, which offers coaches boxes and a filming area for both teams. The playing surface, Claude Crocker Field, is made of bermuda grass. Located at the west end of Crocker Field is the Yonce Field House. The 9,000-square-foot facility houses both home and visiting football teams with locker room facilities. Bailey Memorial Stadium 24

26 The Presbyterian College Athletic Department gives all varsity teams the opportunity to honor significant athletic accomplishments of an individual student-athlete by retiring the jersey worn during their career. As a matter of historical precedent, PC Athletics does not retire the student-athlete s number in any sport. Thus, any jersey number may be worn by a future PC student-athlete. Among all student-athletes to compete at Presbyterian College since 1895, only five Blue Hose student-athletes have had their jerseys retired. Dan Eckstein, Football, #40, 1968: Eckstein wore jersey #40 during his football career at PC. Eckstein was voted the South Carolina Player of the Year in 1968 and the South Carolina Athlete of the Year in In 1968 he was named to the Associated Press Small College All-American team and the NAIA All-American team. He capped the year off by playing in the Coaches All-America Bowl. Eckstein was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in 1968 and later authored The 41st Packer describing his experiences during his time with the NFL world champions. He made the Packers 40-man roster but was later cut. The team helped him land a spot with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League. field in the 1970 s. During his career David was named an NAIA All-American and in 1972 he was named the South Carolina Player of the Year. David rushed for 1,036 yards during his senior season in 1972, becoming the first player in school history to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark in a season. Wiley Adams, Men s Basketball, #20, 1987: Adams No. 20 is the only jersey that has been retired by the PC men s basketball program. A two-time NAIA District 6 Player of the Year (1986 and 1987), Adams was a first team NAIA All-American in During his senior season in he helped lead the Blue Hose to a 25-7 record and the NAIA District 6 Playoffs. Adams finished his career with 1,725 points. Rachel Sloan, Women s Basketball, #20, 2001: Sloan s No. 20 is the only jersey that has been retired Ecksteins by the PC women s basketball program. Sloan was a three-time All-American and was twice named the SAC Women s Basketball Player of the Year. She ranks fifth all-time in conference history for points scored and sixth in rebounding. Sloan was a Kodak All-American during her senior season in She finished her career with a program-best 1,889 points. Todd Cunningham, Football, #8, 2002: All-American quarterback Todd Cunningham s No. 8 is the third retired football jersey. A two-time SAC Offensive Player of the Year, Cunningham still holds the SAC record for career total offense yards with 11,578 and career passing yards with 10,937. He was a three-time All-American, and was a finalist for three years for the Harlon Hill Award, the top award presented to a Division II football player. 27 The Big South Conference is celebrating its 25th Anniversary in , a milestone coming on the heels of unprecedented achievements and unparalleled success in League history over the past few years. Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport... tomatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women s basketball and women s golf. The League received its first automatic bid in 1990 to the NCAA Baseball Championship. In 1989, George F. Buddy Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner. Under Sasser s leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men s basketball television package, from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell University, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing aufeaturing the Big South competing among some of the finest teams in the nation. In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had two individual National Champions, close to 200 All- Americans, has reached the Sweet 16 in men s soccer, women s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in men s soccer, men s basketball, women s basketball, baseball, men s outdoor track & field, and men s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship three times, had the No. 1 ranked men s golfer in the country, had the national team and individual scoring leader in men s basketball twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, and had an institution finish fifth in the NCAA Men s Golf Championships the Conference s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event. 28 In alone, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed three out of the last four years, while its playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifth-year of the Big South s football existence. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League s third Commissioner, and in his 12 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new levels. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years, he has brought television coverage to Big South women s basketball, baseball and softball for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages. Under Kallander s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in Kallander s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 500 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of a Conference blog and an online merchandise store. The Conference s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of Conference student-athletes are named to the Big South s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 gradepoint average, and the League has had more than 90 Academic All-Americans in its quarter-century of existence.
