2 Ashley Zacharias captures 2013 Sand Golf Championship September , Frontier Sand Golf Provincials at Frontier was a two day, 36 hole championship. Once the competition was completed, Waldheim had finished sixth overall in the team championship. Individually, the winning boys score was 149, a challenge for anyone not used to playing on a soft sand greens course. Cody Field was CVAC s best male golfer, shooting a 189, followed by Joel Schultz, Andrew Pauls and Brody Nickel. On the girls side, Ashley Zacharias, to her surprise and everyone s delight, captured the SHSAA provincial championship! Shooting 96 and 100 over the two days for a total of 196, she finished seven strokes ahead of her nearest competitor. Erika Zazula finished eleventh after two day of competition. Congratulations to everyone, especially Ashley, on their results this fall and good luck in the future! We hope sand golf play continues as long as we have sand courses in our district and we encourage young players to give it a go. Ashley Zacharias CVAC District Sand Golf championship September 18, Waldheim The 2013 district sand golf championship took place in Waldheim on Wednesday, September 18. Although it was a bit cool, there was no wind, so play was pleasant on the pretty fall-coloured regional golf course. Waldheim had the only team entered, so the male players focused on their individual games, working to post one of the lowest four scores to join their two female players on the school team. Joel Schultz shot 105, winning the CVAC championship. He was followed by Cody Field, Andrew Pauls, and Brody Nickel. On the girls side, Ashley Zacharias posted a 100, winning the CVAC girls championship. Erika Zazula finished second, improving her score throughout the day. 3 CVAC Senior Grass results September 19, Valley Regional Golf Course The 2013 CVAC grass golf championship was held at the Valley Regional Golf Course in Rosthern on a cool September 19. With 35 boys and 5 girls entered, the numbers were down from the last few years, a concern which will need to be addressed in the future. Regardless, the players present bundled up and headed out, starting from either the first or tenth tee. On the girls side, we had only two schools represented: Rosthern Junior College and Stobart Community School. It takes only two girls to make up a team, so we had a competition for both individual and team categories. In the end, Lyndsey Hildebrandt from RJC captured individual honours shooting a score of 90, followed by her teammate Ashley Kowalczyk who finished with a 95, giving RJC both the individual and team championship. The top three individual golfers advance to the provincial finals. After 18 holes, there was a tie for third between Kirsten Cameron and Crystal Seeseequasiss, both from Stobart, adding extra drama in the battle for third place. An extra playoff hole resulted in Kirsten being eligible to compete at the provincial championship representing CVAC the following weekend. On the boys side, the skill level was wide ranging, but our top golfers made it an interesting competition. It takes at least three boys to make a school team, and this year we had seven schools in the running. At the end of tournament play, Roderick Smallchild from Constable Robin Cameron Education Centre (CRCEC), the winner of our junior boys championship two days earlier, had also captured the senior championship, shooting an 83, identical to his score posted in junior competition. He was followed by Justin Laskowski from VCA, our previous junior boys champion, who carded an 84 after taking an unfortunate triple bogey on the last hole. Austin Reimer from Rosthern rounded out our top three with an 87, but due to his inability to attend provincials, Addison Dasiuk from Warman High moved on to represent CVAC, with a score of 89. In the team competition, it was not close as CRCEC swept away their competition. Reuben Gamble and Tyrell Mike s scores of 91 combined with Roderick s score to give CRC an impressive 265 team total. Provincial Golf results September , Goodsoil The provincial golf championship, held at the Northern Meadows Golf Course at Goodsoil this year, is a two day, 36 hole event. The weather was excellent and the course was beautiful! The winning scores were shot, interestingly, by siblings from Prince Albert s Carlton High with a girls score of 151 and a boys score of 144. The RJC girls team finished sixth overall, with Ashley shooting 205 and Lyndsey carding a 208. On the boys side, Justin Laskowski led the CVAC golfers with a 77 on Day 1, and a 163 overall. Addison Dasiuk followed with a 165. With an 83 on Day 2, Roderick Smallchild finished third with a 175, followed by Reuben Gamble s 179 and Tyrell Mike s 207. All our male golfers are eligible to return next year, so our CVAC team s performance should be even better. Congratulations to everyone who took part this year and we look forward to seeing you next year at Delisle. 4 CVAC runners medal at Provincial Cross Country October 12, Medstead Jayson Childs of Clavet Composite School won the provincial gold medal in Junior Boys Cross Country competition at Medstead on October 12. Jayson was 34 seconds ahead of the second place runner. Jayson also won the provincial gold medal in the Midget Boys division at last year s provincial competition. Congratulations, Jayson! In Midget Girls competition, Hanley s Kaycee Schroeder finished second, while Jasmine Fehr from VCA finished fourth, only three seconds behind Kaycee. Individually, CVAC runners did not place in the top 10 in the Senior Girls, Senior Boys or Junior Girls races. In the Midget Boys race, Rosthern High s Austin Grimer finished sixth, 21 seconds behind the first place finisher. Jayson Childs The top ten CVAC competitors in the Midget, Junior, and Senior categories were eligible to move on to the provincial finals. Team-wise, CVAC did not place in the top three at any of the competition levels, something we will be working on. In team results by classification, Borden placed seventh at the 1A level and Delisle placed second at the 2A level. 5 CVAC Cross Country October 2, Delisle The CVAC cross country meet took place on a windy, cool/cold Wednesday in early October hosted by Delisle Composite School. Over 450 participants showed up to take part in this well-organized event. CVAC introduced a revised athlete recognition format for cross country this year. As before, the top ten finishers in each category Atom, Pee Wee, Bantam, Midget, Junior, and Senior received ribbon recognition, with the winners in each category also receiving CVAC medals. This year, school-based team trophy plaques were awarded in each category, with schools needing a minimum of four competitors in a category to be eligible for the trophy. Aggregate trophy plaques were also added, one awarded to the Atom/Pee Wee grouping and another awarded to the Bantam/Midget/Junior/Senior grouping. These will be revised next year to become: Atom/Pee Wee/ Bantam and Midget/Junior/Senior groupings, better aligning with the SHSAA structure and our schools. Individual winners from the District meet: Atom Boys Dawson Lennea, Valley Manor School Atom Girls Carissa Norsten, Waldheim School Pee Wee Boys Dawson Klinger, South Corman Park School Pee Wee Girls Brenna Paquin, Warman Comm Middle Bantam Boys Cohner Saleski, Valley Manor School Bantam Girls Tseganesh Killoh, Warman Comm Middle Midget Boys Austin Grimer, Rosthern High School Midget Girls Kaycee Schroeder, Hanley School Junior Boys Jayson Childs, Clavet Composite School Junior Girls Emma Pidwerbesky, Borden School Senior Boys Justin Yahyahkeekoot, Stobart Comm School Senior Girls Leah Pomedli, RJC Winners in the team competition: Atom Pee Wee Atom/Pee Wee Aggregate Bantam Midget Bantam/Midget/Junior/ Senior Aggregate Valley Manor Elementary Warman Community Middle School Delisle Elementary School Valley Manor Elementary Delisle Composite Borden School There were no Junior or Senior team winner as no school had the four runner minimum. 6 Stobart Community School wins Boys 1A Soccer gold October , Middle Lake SHSAA soccer playoffs began on a relatively pleasant mid-october weekend with no snow on the ground, a major change from last year. At the Boys 3A Regionals in Prince Albert, Warman was unable to advance to the provincial championship in Saskatoon. A similar fate awaited VCA and Martensville at their 2A Boys Regionals as they were defeated in the first round, halting their advancement to provincials in Muenster. At their 2A Girls Regional playoff, Martensville did win their first round game, but both RJC and Martensville were unable to advance to the provincial championship in Yorkton. Girls Soccer In the Girls 1A Regional playoffs, VCA, Stobart, and Delisle advanced to the provincial championship in Lake Lenore, with VCA as a regional champion. At provincial quarter finals, Delisle fell 6-0 to Middle Lake and Stobart lost a tight 1-0 match to Lake Lenore, but VCA defeated Herbert 5-0, advancing to the championship semi-finals. In the consolation side playoffs, Delisle defeated Stobart 4-3, advancing to the consolation final. VCA lost their semi-final game to Lloydminster, putting them into the bronze medal game. In the consolation final, Delisle led at the half, but lost to Herbert 5-4. Playing in the bronze medal game, VCA went to a shootout before falling 3-2 to Lake Lenore. Boys Soccer In the Boys 1A Regional playoffs, the RJC, Hepburn, and Stobart boys teams advanced (RJC and Stobart as regional champions) to play in the eight team provincial championship in Middle Lake. In the quarter finals, Hepburn was defeated by Cando 3-0; RJC was upset by Middle Lake 5-2, while Stobart defeated Regina Laval 6-1. On the consolation side, Hepburn was beaten by Regina, but RJC defeated Maymont, putting them into the consolation final. In the consolation final on Saturday, RJC defeated Regina Laval 4-3. On the champion side, Stobart continued their run, defeating Cando 2-1 and putting themselves into the final against host Middle Lake. In the gold medal game, Stobart defeated Middle Lake, as they did in their regional final, this time by a 3-1 score, capturing provincial gold! Stobart s Boys Soccer team, with coach Dave Mapletoft CVAC extends a heartfelt congratulations to the Stobart Rebels on their 1A Boys Provincial soccer championship! Congratulations to all the teams who represented themselves, their schools, and CVAC in all they did! Major changes in the structuring of SHSAA soccer this year: 1A soccer now refers to 7 v 7 soccer 2A soccer: 11 v 11 teams from schools with gender populations from grades below 250 3A soccer: 11 v 11 teams from schools with populations over 250 eligible students Page 6

7 Silver medals for CVAC football teams November 9, Watrous + Clavet With the crispness of fall in the air, SHSAA football playoffs began their search for their 2013 champions. In the 1A 6-man playoffs, returning powerhouses made it a challenge for teams on the rise. Hague fell to the reigning champions from Ituna/Kelliher, while Hanley, after routing Elrose in their first game, were defeated in a semi-final shootout with Lemberg. 2A 6-man football featured a very strong Rosthern High/RJC squad. They defeated Hudson Bay in their first playoff game, and followed up with a tough win against Wynyard in the semi-finals. Playing on the road versus Watrous in the provincial final, Rosthern fell behind early, worked hard to get back into the game, but came up short 44-32, capturing the 2013 silver medal. In 2A 9-man playoffs, Clavet faced down many challenges. In their first game, Clavet just slipped by Shaunavon Their second playoff match had a similar result, over Foam Lake. In the provincial final versus a powerful squad from Lumsden, they hoped to use home field to their advantage for the third time in playoffs this year. Unfortunately, they were no more successful than every other opponent Lumsden faced this year, falling Meanwhile, In 3A 9-man playoffs, a rebuilding Warman squad defeated Fort Qu Appelle in their first round tilt, but were unable to produce the same result versus a very strong team from Meadow Lake, losing CVAC is very proud of its football teams and the results they have produced. With the tremendous growth of football in our district, we look forward to continuing positive results from their playoff matches in the future. 8 CVAC teams medal in volleyball November To many student athletes, November means volleyball playoffs. CVAC has a number of strong volleyball programs, making successful playoffs runs a possibility for many of our schools. Girls volleyball In girls playoffs, Hepburn (2A), Waldheim (3A), and Martensville (4A) advanced to regionals after winning their conference, while RJC (3A), Stobart (3A), and Clavet (4A) advanced to regionals as the second seed from their conferences. At regionals, Hepburn and Waldheim won again, advancing to their provincial finals; RJC also moved forward as the third regional seed. At 2A provincials, Hepburn went in as a top four seed, but struggled with consistency, eventually losing in the quarter final playoffs. At the 3A provincials, Waldheim went undefeated, while RJC finished third in their pool. After winning their quarter-final matches, Waldheim and RJC met in the semifinals, with Waldheim once again victorious, winning in two tight sets. Unfortunately, in the bronze medal match, RJC was defeated by Lanigan, ending their season with a fourth place provincial finish. In the gold medal match, Waldheim met the host team from Watrous, whom they had defeated earlier during pool play. This time, though, Watrous, using the strong support of their home town fans, upset Waldheim 22-25, 25-15, and leaving Waldheim with silver medals around their necks. 9 Boys volleyball In boys playoffs, Blaine Lake (2A) and Waldheim (3A) advanced to regionals, winning their conferences, while Leask (2A), VCA (3A), Langham (3A),and CRCEC (3A) advanced as either second or third seeds. At their regional playoffs, Hepburn (2A) and Waldheim moved on to provincials, which they were hosting, through the front door, winning said regional. Colonsay (1A), Clavet (4A), and VCA also advanced to provincials as, respectively, host, second regional seed, and third regional seed. At the 1A and 4A provincials, Colonsay and Clavet advanced to the playoff round, but were unable to defeat their quarter-final opponents. At 2A provincials, Hepburn won their quarter-final playoff match and stood on the brink of the provincial final, but were unable to close, putting them into the bronze medal match. Again, they were not quite able to finish it off, leaving them with the fourth place plaque. At the 3A provincials, both VCA and Waldheim advanced to the playoff round and won their quarter-final matches, pitting them against each other, this time in the semi-finals. Once again, Waldheim used its experience to their advantage, advancing to the gold medal match and putting VCA into the bronze medal match. VCA rose to the occasion, capturing the bronze medal with a and win over Beauval. Waldheim then stepped onto the court and defeated Sturgis and 25-15, capturing the 3A boys provincial championship in front of their home crowd fans. 10 CVAC Junior results Junior Golf September 17, Valley Regional Golf Course The CVAC junior golf championship took place on September 17 at the beautifully manicured Valley Regional Golf Course in Rosthern. Thirty-seven boys and five girls entered into the competition, a drop in numbers but not in enthusiasm. Introducing the double par maximum helped speed play and will remain in place in the future. Hopefully, it will be of less use as competitors continue to hone their skills. On the girls side, competition was quite close. Several struggled, while others played to their potential. In the end, we had a repeat winner from last year, as Nadia Jobs from Asquith carded a 59 over 9 holes, narrowly defeating Danielle Bertoncini from Venture Heights and Maycie Gardypie from Stobart. CVAC looks forward to seeing more girls entering into next year s competition. On the boys side, scores fluctuated wildly, as did the skill level. A quality winning score of 83 was carded by Roderick Smallchild from Constable Robin Cameron, followed by Thiessen Barker from Allan with a 90 and Tylin Cameron from Stobart with a 91. Everyone was quite thankful for the double par maximum (especially the coaches) as several players appeared to have the magical 144 as their goal. It would be great if the decreasing number of participants these last few years can be reversed. It makes it difficult for a course to set a day aside when the numbers are not higher than they were. We will need to look at booking a facility where it is not the financial loss for the course that it presently is. Regardless, it was a great day had by all. Congratulations to all who competed and we look forward to seeing many of you next year! 11 Junior Volleyball November 2, Langham + Colonsay CVAC junior volleyball playoffs ran the last week in October after a six-week season filled with league play and multiple tournaments. Girls volleyball On the girls side, junior playoffs opened with 25 teams competing at eight sites. After several closely contested matches, the top seeded teams moved on to the conference finals. From these playoffs, Colonsay, Waldheim, Warman High, and Dalmeny advanced to the finals in Langham on Saturday. Following the completion of a very competitive five team round robin, Warman defeated Langham 15-25, 25-14, and In the second vs third match, advancing to the final against Waldheim. In the championship final, Waldheim prevailed 21-25, 25-22, and 25-20, capturing the 2013 title. Waldheim s junior girls volleyball team with coaches Denise Harder (left) and Arla Schmidt (right) Boys volleyball On the boys side, 15 teams entered into the first round of junior playoffs, with 8 teams moving on to a conference final. From this second round of play, Hepburn, Langham, Dalmeny, and Vonda, the surprise of this year s play, advanced to the five-team final in Colonsay. After the five-team round robin battle concluded, Langham, Colonsay, and Vonda moved into the playoff round. Vonda continued its amazing run, sweeping Colonsay 25-14, in the semi-final, setting up a confrontation with Langham in the final. Their efforts fell just short, as the strong W.W. Brown squad from Langham captured the 2013 CVAC championship with a very exciting and victory. Congratulations to the Waldheim girls, the Langham boys, and everyone who had a positive experience with volleyball this season. The play continues to improve across the district as coaches and players work to develop their skills throughout the year. With the promise of more schools entering play next year, especially at the boys level, it should only get more exciting!
