Nejc Zemljak has directed the Warrior offense to a.327 hitting percentage with assists per set. SERIES RECORD Long Beach State trails in its all-time series with Hawaii, The Warriors swept the season series last year as they defeated the 49ers, 3-1 and 3-2, in Honolulu. LAST TIME OUT LBSU earned a split in a pair of non-conference matches at the annual Active Ankle Classic Presented by Woodfin Hotel Cypress last weekend. The 49ers dropped a five-set heartbreaker to No. 14 Lewis before bouncing back for a 3-1 win over 10th-ranked Penn State. The Beach was up 2-1, but couldn t finish off the Flyers in the loss. Game scores were 20-25, 25-18, 16-25, 25-23,

2 PAGE 2 HEAD COACH ANDY READ Second Season Andy Read enters his second season as the interim head coach at Long Beach State after spending the previous 13 years as an assistant to Alan Knipe. Read will serve as the interim head coach at LBSU through the 2012 season while Knipe is at the helm of the United States Men's Volleyball Team. Read is no stranger to men's volleyball and has been a head coach once before, leading UC Irvine from Read is known for his knowledge of the many technical intricacies of volleyball. In 2010, Read's first year at the head of the LBSU program, the squad finished with a overall record. Dean Bittner was named to the AVCA All- America second team, while Bittner, Antwain Aguillard and Dan Alexander also garnered All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation honors. In addition, three 49ers made the MPSF All-Academic Team. As an assistant to Knipe for the 49ers, Read worked primarily with the setters. He tutored Chris Seiffert, a three-time All-American and a former starter on the United States National Team, and Tyler Hildebrand, also a three-time All-American. Read has also coached several USA Developmental Teams including seven players from the 2008 Gold Medal USA Olympic Team. Two summers ago, Read guided the USA Boy's Youth National Team to a 10th-place finish at the World Championships in Italy. During the summer of 2008, along with Long Beach State assistant coach, John Hawks, Read led the Boy's Youth National Team which went undefeated at the NORCECA Championships in Miami, Fla. Read was also the head coach for the USA Men's Junior National Team in 2006, guiding the squad to a second-place finish at NORCECA and a berth in the Men's Junior World Championships in Morocco. At the World Championships, the USA team finished seventh (tied for the best finish ever by a USA Men's Junior Team), and along the way defeated then reigning champion Russia in straight sets. In January 2005, Read was named the USA Development Coach of the Year, after serving as head coach of the USA Boy's Youth National Team that earned a gold medal at the NORCECA Youth Championships in Mexico City with a record of 6-0. The team won its last 17 games in a row en route to earning a berth in the 2005 Boy's Youth World Championships. Prior to the 2004 season, Read was an assistant on the U.S. Men's Volleyball team that competed in the World University Games in Korea. Read helped lead the squad, that included former 49ers, David Lee, Scott Touzinsky, and Tyler Hildebrand, to a third-place finish. In the summer of 2001, Read served as the head coach for the U.S. Junior National Team which traveled to Brazil. Former 49ers Scott Touzinsky and Jeff Wootton were members of that U.S. squad. Read was the head coach of the U.S. Youth National Team from , while also assisting the USA Volleyball staff at the 1999 World Cup in Japan. In addition, he was an assistant coach for the World University Games in 1995 and Prior to his stint at UC Irvine ( ), Read was an assistant coach at Pepperdine from In his final year at Pepperdine, the Waves captured the 1992 NCAA National Championship. Read's connection with Long Beach State began when he was the head coach of the Marina High School boy's team from , where he coached 49er head coach Alan Knipe. Aside from his coaching duties, Read also serves as a science teacher at Westminster High School. Read, who resides in Garden Grove, graduated from Biola University in 1981 with a degree in biological science. Brad Hemmerling paced the 49ers with 17 kills and nine digs. Taylor Crabb added 13 kills, six digs and four blocks, while Antwain Aguillard finished with 11 kills. Mike Klipsch also registered a double-double with 57 assists and a career-high 15 digs. Against the Nittany Lions, Long Beach State put forth a strong team effort to come away with a 25-21, 25-21, 27-29, victory. Jim Baughman had 13 kills, while committing just two errors on 23 attempts for a.478 hitting percentage. Antwain Aguillard had a double-double with 11 kills and a career-high tying 11 blocks, while Brad Hemmerling chipped in 12 kills. Taylor Crabb also totaled 10 kills and six digs and junior Ryan Meehan posted a.583 (8-1-12) attack percentage. IN THE POLLS The 49ers remained at No. 5 in the AVCA Division I-II Men s Coaches Top 15 Poll, released March 14. USC earned the top ranking with 15 first-place votes, while BYU was second. Hawaii dropped one spot to No. 10. RECORD WATCH Senior Mike Klipsch ranks fourth in the 49er record books with 3,771 career assists. Klipsch was the 2008 MPSF Freshman of the Year after leading the nation with assists per set. As a sophomore, he finished fourth in the MPSF and the country with apg. Senior Antwain Aguillard is also in prime position to finish his two-year career among LBSU s best in hitting percentage. Aguillard is currently third with an impressive.443 clip. ALL IN THE FAMILY Troy Crutchfield, the son of 10th-year 49er assistant coach John Crutchfield, is a member of the UH men s volleyball team. Troy attended Wilson High School and Long Beach City College before making his way to Honolulu. He has appeared in four matches for the Warriors this season. BAUGHMAN LEADS THE WAY Junior Jim Baughman hasn t missed a step in his transition from outside hitter to opposite. Baughman currently leads the team with 3.71 kills per set. He has registered doublefigure kills 14 times, including five 20-plus kill matches. Baughman finished with a season best, and was just one shy of his career high, with 22 kills vs. UC Irvine (Jan. 7). BLOCK PARTY Senior Antwain Aguillard has led or tied for the team lead in blocks in 12 matches this season. Aguillard is averaging a team-best 1.19 blocks per set and tied his career high with 11 at Pepperdine (Jan. 12) and vs. Penn State (March 12). He also added 11 kills against the Nittany Lions for his first double-double of the season. 3 PAGE 3 BREAKOUT PERFORMANCE After appearing in just three matches, junior Brad Hemmerling earned his first career start against Pepperdine on Feb. 23. The Yorba Linda, Calif., native made the most of the opportunity, pounding down a then career-high 16 kills, while committing just one error for a.625 hitting percentage. Hemmerling has remained in the starting lineup since then and has reached double-figure kills in six of the last seven matches. He topped his career best with 17 kills in a five-set loss to No. 14 Lewis. MORE FROM MEEHAN Junior Ryan Meehan has been a consistent force in the middle for Long Beach State. On the season, the Dana Point, Calif., native has averaged 1.22 kills and 1.11 blocks per set, while hitting.464, which tops all 49er starters. Against No. 1 USC, Meehan finished with a careerhigh 10 kills. CRABB STEPS UP Freshman Taylor Crabb has made an immediate impact for the 49ers this season. He has been a fixture in the starting lineup ever since his 10-kill performance off the bench sparked Long Beach State to a 19-25, 22-25, 25-14, 25-20, victory over UCLA. Crabb has posted seven consecutive double-figure kill matches with 11 at UC San Diego, 10 vs. Pepperdine, a season-high 16 against USC, 13 at UC Santa Barbara, 13 at UCLA, 13 vs. Lewis and 10 vs. Penn State. On the year, he is averaging 2.07 kills and 1.04 digs per set. BACK ROW BATTLE Senior Kirk Francis has earned the start at libero in 14 of the last 15 matches and has registered a team-high 2.49 digs per set. He compiled a career-best 22 digs in a five-set loss to topranked USC on Feb. 25. He has reached double figures five other times. DOUBLE-DOUBLE Senior Mike Klipsch has recorded four double-doubles on the season. His first came in a fiveset win over third-ranked UCLA (Jan. 21) as he finished with 46 assists and 10 digs. Klipsch also accomplished the feat at UC San Diego (37 assists and 13 digs), vs. USC (59 assists, 10 digs) and vs. Lewis with 57 assists and a career-high 15 digs. Jim Baughman also notched his first double-double of the season with 21 kills and 10 digs against the top-ranked Trojans. He added another at No. 8 UCLA with 21 kills and a careerbest 14 digs. Antwain Aguillard was the third 49er to register a double-double with 11 kills and a career-high tying 11 blocks against Penn State. AGUILLARD GARNERS NATIONAL RECOGNITION Senior Antwain Aguillard was named the Sports Imports/AVCA Men s Division I-II National Player of the Week on Jan. 31. Aguillard led the 49ers to a pair of three-set victories over Pacific and then No. 2 Stanford. Against the Tigers, Aguillard racked up a season-high 12 kills. He committed just one error on 18 attempts for an impressive.611 hitting percentage. Aguillard continued his stellar performance against the defending national champion Cardinal as he compiled five kills and six blocks. On the weekend, Aguillard averaged 2.83 kills and 1.67 blocks per set, while hitting at a.517 clip ( ). ALL-TOURNAMENT Jim Baughman was named to the Gaucho Invitational All-Tournament Team after helping the 49ers to a fourth-place finish. Baughman concluded the weekend with team-highs in kills (34), attempts (62) and kills per game (4.86). He also ranked second on the squad with a.403 ( ) hitting percentage. 49ER TRADITION Long Beach State men s volleyball is rich in tradition with one national championship (1991), seven conference titles and seven NCAA final four appearances. The 49ers have also advanced to the MPSF Tournament 15 times, including eight of the last 10 years.
