The Beach will host the Gauchos on Thursday, March 15 at 7 p.m. inside the Walter Pyramid, before traveling to Santa Barbara for a Friday, March 16 contest at Rob Gym at 7 p.m. PROMOTIONS The first 150 students with a valid I.D. who come out to the Walter Pyramid to cheer on the Beach for Thursday s match against UC Santa Barbara will receive a FREE LB Nation water bottle. IN THE RANKINGS Long Beach State is ranked No. 1 in the country after opening the 2018 season with a perfect 17-0 record which is the best start in program history. UC Santa Barbara moved up to No. 12 in the rankings after having won its last five matches. The Gauchos are now 9-5 on the year and 2-0 in Big West action. The Beach remain the only unbeaten team in Division I-II. LBSU s 17-match winning streak is the second-best in program history coming in behind the squad s 22-match winning streak which spanned two seasons. The Beach have won 24 straight matches inside the Walter Pyramid, which is the second-longest home winning streak in program history. As a team, Long Beach State is leading the nation in two statistical categories. The Beach lead the league in hitting percentage (.406) and opponent hitting percentage (.168) Outside hitter TJ DeFalco became just the 21st player in Long Beach State men s volleyball program history to reach the 1,000 kill mark after recording eight kills against Stanford on Jan. 26. DeFalco has now accumulated 1120 career kills to rank 18th all time at LBSU. Junior setter Josh Tuaniga has now racked up 3,047 career assists and is ranked seventh all time at Long Beach State. Kyle Ensing currently leads the team with 192 kills to average 3.56 per set which ranks him seventh in the Big West and 16th in the country. LAST TIME OUT The top-ranked Long Beach State men s volleyball team earned a 3-0 [25-18, 25-16, 25-14] victory over Mount Olive on Wednesday night in a total team effort. With the win, the Beach improve to 17-0 on the year which marks the best start to the season in program history. Long Beach State rolled past Mount Olive hitting.391 to the Trojans.078. The Beach dominated in all facets of the match as they held the advantage in kills (36-23), assists (35-21), aces (9-1), digs (28-21), and total team blocks ( ). The Beach utilized 13 different players in the match and were led by junior outside hitter TJ DeFalco who finished the match with 12 kills, three digs, three service aces, one block and a.611 hitting percentage ( ). Also contributing offensively were juniors Louis Richard and Kyle Ensing who each tallied seven kills in the contest. Richard s seven kills marked a new career-high for the product out of Los Angeles, Calif. The offense was paced by junior setter Josh Tuaniga who dished out 23 assists over two sets of action. He split setter duties with freshman Carlos Rivera who finished the match with nine assists, to tie his career-best. Defensively, Long Beach State got another excellent performance from freshman middle blocker Simon Anderson who led the team with five block assists. Meanwhile, senior libero Matt Butler registered a seasonhigh six digs from the backrow. Long Beach State opened the first set knocking down four straight points, but Mount Olive bounded back and evened the score at 8-8 before taking an 11-9 lead. The two teams battled each other for a few points before the Beach found their stride and went on a 7-0 run to jump out in front With a comfortable lead, LBSU went on to take the first set The second set was close early on as the Beach and Trojans exchanged leads three times before Long Beach State took control of the set. The Beach used several small runs to open up a seven-point lead (21-14) as they cruised to a victory. Long Beach State went into the third set with a 2-0 set lead and quickly jumped out in front 6-2. Freshman outside hitter Ryan Poole who made his collegiate debut in the second set, recorded his first-career kill in the third to put the Beach up If that weren t enough, Poole had the opportunity to play against his older brother, Robert Poole, a senior opposite on Mount Olive. With the Poole brothers both on the court, Ryan finished the match with three kills and one block assist, while hitting.500 (3-1-4). With a convincing lead, freshman outside hitter Ethan Siegfried came in and put the match away as he knocked down back-to-back service aces to give Long Beach State a victory. The Gauchos are 9-5 overall and 2-0 in Big West Conference action. UCSB is led offensively by Kennan Sanders and Corey Chavers. Sanders leads the Gauchos with 4.27 kills per set, while Chavers leads the team with 175 total kills. Randy DeWeese is the Gauchos setter as he has dished out 446 assists for an average of 8.58 per set. DeWeese has also been solid at the net with a team-leading 46 total blocks as he averages 0.88 per set. Defensively, UC Santa Barbara is paced by Grady Yould s 2.50 digs per set and Connor Drake s 1.05 blocks per set. SERIES VS. UC SANTA BARBARA Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara will meet for the 91st and 92nd time in program history and the Beach lead the all-time series Long Beach State has won the last four contests against UCSB as the Gauchos are looking for their first win over the Beach since When playing at LBSU, the Beach lead the series 20-14, and when playing at UCSB, Long Beach State holds a edge. HOT START Since the start of the 2018 season, the Beach have been unstoppable posting an impressive 17-0 record with 14 three-set sweeps. The hot start has cemented the 2018 squad in the Long Beach State men s volleyball record book as they are off to the best start in program history. Previously, the 1992 team held that honor as they kicked off the year with a 16-0 record. HOME SWEET HOME Over the last three seasons, Long Beach State has put together a 34-3 record inside the Pyramid. That record is good for a winning percentage of.919. The Beach have not lost a home match since March 26, 2016 when they dropped a 3-0 decision to then-no. 2 UCLA. Since then, LBSU owns a 24-0 record when playing at home. CLOSING IN ON 300 With the 3-0 victory over Mount Olive last week, Long Beach State head coach Alan Knipe recorded his 295th career victory at the helm of the program. He is now five wins away from becoming just the second men s volleyball head coach in program history to reach the 300-win plateau. A GRAND TIME On Jan. 26, junior outside hitter TJ DeFalco became just the 21st player in Long Beach State men s volleyball program history to record 1,000 career kills. DeFalco has now racked up 1,120 career kills and moved into 18th all time at Long Beach State. HELPING HIMSELF TO THE TOP 10 Junior setter Josh Tuaniga continues to set the pace for Long Beach State this season as he has now accumulated 3,047 career assists as he comes in seventh all-time at LBSU. This season, Tuaniga has dished out 555 helpers to average per set. His average is good for second in the Big West and third in the country. He is just one of seven Long Beach State players to reach 3,000 assists in his career. ACES WILD TJ DeFalco is the team leader in service aces as he has racked up 25 aces on the year to average 0.46 per set. His aces per set average is good for fourth in the Big West and 13th in the nation. He has tallied a season-high four service aces on two occasions this season. In his career, DeFalco has recorded a total of 98 service aces to break into the top 10 at Long Beach State all-time. He is currently in sixth all-time. HITTING THE SPOT As a team, Long Beach State owns a.406 attack percentage which leads the Big West Conference and is tops in the country. The Beach are currently the only team in the NCAA to hit over.400. Josh Tuaniga is a big part of the Beach s offensive prowess as the junior setter has run the offense dishing out assists per set. In addition to Tuaniga pacing the offense, Long Beach State boasts four starters who are hitting over.400 on the year. Leading the way is freshman middle blocker Simon Anderson who is hitting.503 ( ). Behind him are Tuaniga (.482), redshirt junior middle blocker Nick Amado (.467), and junior outside hitter TJ DeFalco (.422). BLOCK PARTY Long Beach State has been solid at the net this season as the Beach average 2.34 blocks per set to rank fifth in the league and 15th in the country. Leading the way is redshirt junior middle blocker Nick Amado who is averaging a team-leading 1.04 blocks per set. Amado s average is good for fifth in the league and 19th in the country. CAN YOU DIG IT? The Beach are averaging 9.48 digs per set this season and are led by TJ DeFalco, Josh Tuaniga, and Jordan Molina. DeFalco has collected a team-leading 107 digs for an average of 1.98 digs per set, while Tuaniga is close behind with 102 digs on the year for an average of 1.96 per set. Junior libero Jordan Molina rounds out the Beach s top performers with 94 digs which is good for an average of 1.92 per set. The trio are ranked third, fifth, and sixth, respectively, in the Big West, as well as 36th, 38th, and 41st, in the country, respectively.

This year, the Beach welcomes Robert Kutsch and Tom Wade as the Class of The two major induction criteria for the Wall of Honor, as outlined by the committee are as follows: the player must have represented Long Beach State men s volleyball with unparalleled success or achievement and truly embodied the passion, commitment, and loyalty that encompass a 49er men s volleyball player. The pair will be inducted into the Wall of Honor, joining the current 27 members, on Monday, March 19 at the annual Randy Sandefur Memorial Golf Tournament at El Dorado Park. GENE POOLE Last week when Long Beach State hosted Mount Olive, freshman outside hitter Ryan Poole made his collegiate debut against his older brother, Robert Poole, who is a senior opposite for the Trojans. The younger Poole had a solid outing as he came off the bench and tallied three kills on four attempts with just one miscue to hit.500 in the match. He also added a block assist in the Beach s 3-0 sweep over Mount Olive. NATIONAL RECOGNITION For his excellent performance against No. 2 UCLA, junior outside hitter TJ DeFalco was named Sports Imports/AVCA Player of the Week. He led the Beach in kills (17), digs (12), and blocks (5) while hitting.419 ( ) for his 11th career double-double. DeFalco earned weekly honors for the third time in his career. It is the 29th time in program history an LBSU player has earned national recognition. ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS During the first week of the season, Long Beach State took part in the UC Santa Barbara ASICS Tournament where the Beach went 3-0 with victories over Princeton (3-0), NJIT (3-1), and Saint Francis (Pa.) (3-0). At the tournament, LBSU received a pair of solid efforts by TJ DeFalco and Josh Tuaniga which led to the duo being named to the All- Tournament Team. DeFalco finished the tournament with 34 kills (3.40 per set) and 19 digs (1.90 per set), while Tuaniga paced Long Beach State with 94 assists for a set average as the Beach hit.448 at the UCSB ASICS Tournament. STANDING ROOM ONLY In the Beach s match against No. 2 UCLA on Saturday, Feb. 17, the Walter Pyramid packed in 4,560 spectators to set a new men s volleyball attendance record. The new record obliterated the previous standard of 2,828 which was set last season at the MPSF Tournament when LBSU defeated Hawaii to capture the MPSF Championship on April 22. RECORD SETTERS Just a few weeks into the 2018 season and the top-ranked Long Beach State men s volleyball program shattered its own season ticket record. The Long Beach State ticket office has sold 150 men s volleyball season tickets, which is more than a 60 percent increase in season ticket sales from a year ago. A NEW ERA Long Beach State opens 2018 as part of the Big West Conference during its inaugural men s volleyball season. The Big West is the first NCAA Division I conference to sponsor men s volleyball making it the league s 18th sponsored sport. BIG WEST TOURNAMENT The inaugural Big West Men s Volleyball Tournament will be held April at Long Beach State s Walter Pyramid. All six teams will compete for the tournament title and an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. Long Beach State YEARS NCAA Appearances MPSF Tournaments As a student-athlete at LBSU, Knipe received numerous honors including all-conference (First Team, 1992), All-American (Frist Team, 1992; Second Team, 1991) and All-NCAA Tournament (1991) accolades. He also helped the Beach advance to the 1990 NCAA Finals. Knipe continued his playing career following his graduation from Long Beach State as he was a member of the United States National Team from He also played on the Bud Light 4-Man Pro Beach Volleyball Tour and won seven USVB National Open Championships with Team Paul Mitchell. In 1993, he was named the United States Volleyball Association Player of the Year. Two years later, Knipe played overseas for Spoleto in the Italian Pro League and played for the Zellik Club in Belgium the following year. In October 2006, Knipe was inducted into the inaugural Long Beach State Men s Volleyball Wall of Honor which recognizes former players who represented 49er men s volleyball with unparalleled success or achievement.
