1 S C O R E December 2014 Volume 7 Issue 3 CVAC makes mark in provincial events The Central Valley Athletic Conference (CVAC), which includes all Prairie Spirit schools and the four affiliated schools within its boundaries, enjoyed success in provincial competitions this fall. Please look inside this newsletter for more information about each event. The newsletter also includes information about the results of CVAC competition and results in Junior sports. 2 CVAC District Sand Golf championship September , Waldheim Regional Park The 2014 CVAC Sand Golf Championship took place at Waldheim Regional Park split over a blustery Wednesday, and a pleasant Thursday. Only four boys, all from Waldheim, entered the playoff this year, which was a bit of a disappointment. However, having two Grade 10s and two Grade 9s in the mix means that Waldheim is building toward strong entries in 2015 and 2016, if sand golf remains an SHSAA event. When the playoff round was completed, Joel Schultz had captured the championship. Because there were no girls entered, a school team could not be entered into provincials, only the top three male finishers. Therefore, Coach Pauls and Joel were joined at provincials by Waldheim teammates Ryan Enns and Andrew Pauls. The provincial championship took place in Radville on September 26 and 27 with 27 boys and 12 girls entered. The event was totally dominated by Strasbourg School who won the team title based on its four male entrants placing first, second, third and fifth, with the championship settled on the first playoff hole. Joel Schultz had the best finish of the CVAC golfers, finishing in fifteenth place, followed by Andrew and Ryan. It was a good experience for these young golfers as they all return with at least two years of eligibility. Joel Schultz Thanks to Coach Pauls and his willingness to give his Waldheim students the option to compete in this event. We will find out later this school year whether it is realistic for this event to continue to be offered based upon its ever-dropping numbers. Regardless, our student athletes are to be commended for the effort they put forth, and we look forward to seeing them competing within CVAC next year, whether on sand or grass. CVAC District Grass Golf championship September 16, Valleyview Golf Course, Delisle The 2014 CVAC Senior Grass Golf Championship took place on September 16 at the Valleyview Golf Course in Delisle on a beautiful, wind-free day. Twenty-eight boys challenged the 6410 yard, par 70, blue tee course, while only two girls played the 5620 yard, par 72, red tee course. Although the numbers were low, the competition was there, as the course made it interesting with its elevation changes and speedy greens. When the playoff was completed, Justin Laskowski from VCA emerged as the boys champion shooting for a winning score of 79. On his heels was Ashton Cameron from Stobart, in second place with an 82 (39-43). Third place was claimed by Tyler Heidt from Clavet with an 84, with the top five rounded out by Jax Gipman from Martensville and Kole Lind from Clavet who shot 85. Due to a conflict, Tyler was unable to advance to provinmaycie Gardipy cials, so Jax jumped in as the third CVAC provincial representative. On the girls side, Maycie Gardipy (although only in Grade 9) played consistently and emerged as the girls champion, shooting a 122 (60-62). She was the only girl able to advance to provincials as a CVAC representative. Justin Laskowski In team play, six schools vied for the championship. The three best school scores on each hole are totaled, with the school having the lowest score being declared the CVAC champion. This year, with a score of 270, VCA finished in third place; Delisle finished second, shooting 266. Consistent team-wide play helped Clavet capture the team title with a score of 262. Unfortunately, due to previous commitments, the Clavet and Delisle teams were unable to advanced to provincials, so the VCA boys team joined their teammate at provincials in Nipawin on September 26 and 27. 3 Provincial Grass Golf championship September , Evergreen Golf Course, Nipawin The provincial grass golf championship was held at Nipawin s beautiful and challenging Evergreen Golf Course. Sixty-nine boys and 37 girls, competing as individuals and as 14 boys and 9 girls teams, battled for the individual and team provincial titles. A practice round on Thursday in hot wind-free weather was followed by two days of competition in progressively cooler temperatures. VCA s team scores, drawn from Justin, Jared, Cole and Spencer, were consistent both days, varying by only two strokes, placing them ninth in the team competition. In individual competition, Maycie Gardipy handled the pressure of senior play with cool consistency, finishing eighth overall, with three years of eligibility remaining. On the boys side, the CVAC individual reps played solid golf over both days. Ashton Cameron finished in twenty-ninth place and Justin Laskowski finished twenty-sixth while Jax Gipman, playing very consistently, finished thirteenth overall. CVAC greatly appreciates the efforts of each participant. The 2014 high school season is over, and we look forward to seeing how our student athletes will fare next year with provincials in 2015 taking place in Yorkton. Thank you to all the coaches and their athletes who took the time, and put forth the effort, to represent CVAC at every level. CVAC Cross Country September 24, Delisle For the first time in district history, the CVAC cross country meet on September 24 in Delisle took place in hot weather beneath sunny skies. Almost 500 athletes took part in the day-long meet, enjoying their run and the weather, meeting old and new friends. 4 A. D. Provincial Cross Country October 4, Kamsack At provincials in Kamsack on the first weekend in October, CVAC runners put themselves up against the best provincial competition. The senior level produced mixed results, as not all of our top runners were able to attend. The senior girls and boys categories had 91 and 82 runners, respectively, competing in the 4 km and 6 km races. While our senior girls did not fare all that well, Jayson Childs from Clavet placed top 10, finishing eighth overall. The midget boys race, 4 km in length, was contested by 81 runners. While CVAC did not place all that well, the race itself was won by only one second! In the midget girls competition, 101 entrants took part in the 3 km race. Jasmine Fehr from VCA finished an excellent race in second place, only two seconds out of gold and comfortably ahead of the bronze place finisher. Kaycee Schroeder At the junior level, CVAC really made its mark. Kaycee Schroeder from Hanley moved away from her 67 competitors over the 4 km race, winning gold by eight seconds, while Austin Grismer from Rosthern Junior College battled past his 43 fellow runners for 5 km to capture his gold medal by two seconds. Six races: two gold, one silver. Wow! If we can only carry that over to provincial track in spring. Another year has come and gone. Never have we had better weather for our district championships, and we only hope it happens again in CVAC thanks everyone for all they did to make this a positive, successful year for our students and we look forward to being there to support you again next year. The portal is accessible to staff and the public, and only Athletic Directors have permission to make changes to the information presented. The portal provides a complete CVAC calendar, the CVAC Executive, a list of the Athletic Directors in all CVAC schools and upcoming tournaments. In addition, all sports are listed on the left side of the portal, each with the names and s of all the CVAC coaches for that sport, by age classification (junior/senior) and gender (boys/girls), where applicable. Other information includes rules, league, tournaments, forms, officials lists, clinics and awards. Page 4

5 Provincial Soccer October The 2014 high school soccer championships began on a fall weekend unlike any in recent memory. Gone were the snow and biting temperatures and, in their place, sunshine and shorts-wearing weather. Even finals weekend, October 24 and 25, was a memory maker weather-wise, allowing the athletes skills to be properly demonstrated. In the 2A 11v11 boys regional playoff, Martensville and Warman both lost to Lake Lenore, the eventual provincial champion, but Warman advanced to the eight-team provincial final as the host site. At the championship, Warman was an excellent host, providing quality facilities and officials, but was unable to advance in play, losing to Yorkton, the second provincial finalist, and Se Se Wa Hum. In 1A girls or 7v7 regional playoffs, CVAC was represented by an ever-growing number of teams. VCA and Waldheim advanced from the totally-cvac central regional, eliminating Stobart and RJC, while Martensville and Delisle advanced from the south regional to the eight-team provincial championship at Middle Lake. At the championship, in relatively pleasant weather, the four CVAC schools made their run for the medals. In quarterfinal play, VCA crushed Maymont 8-3 and Waldheim slipped by Delisle 3-1, while Martensville lost an agonizingly close 2-1 contest to Lake Lenore. On the B side of the draw, CVAC schools rebounded well, with Martensville scoring a solid 4-0 victory over Maymont and Delisle defeating Ahtahkakoop 6-2, putting them up against each other in the B side final Saturday morning. In the match, Martensville stepped up, as they had at the regional final, defeating Delisle 5-1. On the A side, VCA and Waldheim were both defeated in their semi-final matches. VCA was upset 6-5 by Lake Lenore, while Waldheim was unable to hold off Middle Lake, losing 4-1 to the eventual provincial champions. This pitted the two CVAC schools in a battle for the bronze medals. VCA also repeated their regional final result, this time coming back from a 4-1 second half deficit to defeat Waldheim 5-4 in overtime, and claiming the 1A girls bronze medals. In 1A boys play, CVAC sent four teams to their regional playoff. RJC was eliminated in early round robin play, while Stobart (the defending provincial champion) and Hepburn were eliminated in the semi finals. VCA finished second to Middle Lake, losing 3-1 in the regional final, but advanced to the four-team provincial playoffs in Maymont. At the 2014 provincial championship, VCA won their semi-final game, handily defeating Meadow Lake 5-0 and setting up a rematch with Middle Lake in the championship game. CVAC wishes the very best to all coaches, players, officials, and spectators who took part in the 2014 soccer season. We look forward to the junior season next spring and to hosting the 1A Girls SHSAA Provincials next fall. Page 5

6 Provincial Football November, 2014 Following the completion of their six-week season, CVAC football teams charged into their second season playoffs! From the 1A 6-man league, Hanley and Hague advanced to the playoff round. In the quarter finals, Hanley was defeated by Eastonia, while Hague lost a nail-biter to Lemberg Rosthern also advanced in the 2A 6-man playoffs, but were defeated by Hudson Bay. In 3A 9-man play, CVAC had three teams advancing to the playoff round. Martensville met Melville in their quarter final, losing Delisle was solid in their first round game, defeating Broadview 31-9, matching them against Melfort, the number 1 seed. In that game, a solid effort simply was not enough, as they fell to a very strong squad from the North. Warman, league champions and number 2 seed, rolled through their playoff run, destroying Yorkton Sacred Heart 53-0 and Melville 58-0, advancing to the provincial final against Melfort. As the host of the championship game, Warman tried to put playing on their home field to their advantage on a cold windy Saturday. It started well, with the Wolverines scoring the first touchdown of the game. Slowly, though, Melfort s balanced offensive attack exerted itself as its defence shut down the Warman running game. By game s end, Melfort had defeated the Wolverines 46-20, capturing another provincial championship. In 2A 9-man play, Clavet entered playoffs as the number 1 seed. This ranking was supported by their victory over Indian Head in quarter finals and a victory over Lumsden in the semi finals, pitting them against Humboldt in the final. Hosted in Clavet, the provincial championship was an excellent game between two very well matched teams. Played in a biting wind, Humboldt built up a 11-7 halftime lead, but Clavet responded in the second half, scoring two touchdowns in the third quarter. Throughout the fourth quarter, with the wind at their back, Humboldt pushed for the equalizer, but were unable to score against the tough Clavet defence. When time ran out, Clavet had defeated Humboldt 19-11, claiming the 2014 SHSAA 2A 9-man provincial championship. CVAC extends its thanks to all, from players to coaches to supporters, who worked to make the year a rewarding experience for everyone involved. 7 Provincial volleyball - CVAC runs wild! November, 2014 November 2014 was THE month to remember in Central Valley history as it pertained to senior volleyball. A number of excellent squads represented CVAC as they strove to capture their provincial championships. With entries in nine of the 10 championships, CVAC walked away with seven medals: four gold, two silver and one bronze. No SHSAA district has ever done as well as CVAC did in provincial volleyball in 2014 Girls volleyball Girls playoffs began on the November 8 weekend. In 1A girls conferences, Colonsay, East conference 3 champion, and Perdue advanced to regionals, as did Hepburn, East conference 3 champions, and Langham in 2A girls conference play. In 3A girls conferences, Hague, Hanley and RJC, the North conference 3 champions, moved on to regionals, as did Clavet to 4A regionals. At regionals the following weekend, the challenges only got greater as teams were now only one step away from provincials. Regardless, CVAC squads continued their strong play, as we advanced teams to provincials at every level. At the 1A level, it was Colonsay who moved on to provincials in Canwood. At the 2A level, Hepburn captured their regional championship and advanced, along with the host CVAC team, to provincials in Langham. At the 3A level, RJC moved on to provincials in Langenberg. At the 4A level, Waldheim once again captured their regional championship, advancing to provincials in La Loche. Finally, at the 5A level, Warman captured their first regional championship and proceeded to Regina for their provincial playoff. continued... 8 At provincials on November 21 and 22, CVAC teams continued to excel. At the 5A level, Warman advanced as a regional champion, but went 1-3 at provincials, gaining valuable experience to build off of next year when they hope to host volleyball provincials. At the 3A level, a similar story unfolded, as RJC went 1-3, but also gained experience to put to use next year when they host the provincial championship in Rosthern. At the 2A level, Hepburn and Langham represented CVAC in Langham. As expected, Hepburn won their pool going 4-0, while Langham unexpectedly went 3-1, finishing second in their pool. Although Langham was eliminated in the first playoff round, Hepburn rolled over Strasbourg and St. Walburg, meeting Fox Valley in the final. Unfortunately, this is where their run ended, as Fox Valley scored an exciting 25-17, victory, capturing the gold medal and leaving Hepburn with silver for the second time in three years. They then battled through playoff matches, defeating Invermay and Englefeld on their way to the finals. In the gold medal game, they were once again matched up against Plenty, but this time Colonsay prevailed 25-21, 15-25, 25-22, winning the provincial 1A championship. Finally, at the 4A level, Waldheim, as expected, rolled through their pool, going 4-0. Their strong play continued into playoffs, where they defeated Yorkton and Tisdale on their way to the finals. Returning to the provincial final, they used the experience gained last year to their advantage, defeating Caronport 25-22, in the gold medal match to claim the 2014 provincial championship. CVAC had many of its teams advance directly to regionals on the November 22 weekend, but 1A Borden and 3A Waldheim captured their conference championship and advanced based upon their solid play. At the 1A level, Borden went 3-1, advancing to provincials in Mossbank. At the 2A level, Blaine Lake joined regional winners Hepburn and Colonsay in advancing to provincials in Edam. At the 3A level, Waldheim swept their regional, advancing to Bellevue for provincials. Finally, at the 4A level, VCA advanced undefeated to their provincial championship in Shaunavon. continued... 9 At provincials on the November 28 and 29 weekend, CVAC teams once again asserted themselves. At the 1A level, Borden battled to a 3-1 record during round robin play, finishing third in a tough, balanced pool. In the playoffs, they were unable to advance beyond the quarterfinals, losing a tight, tough match to Thunderchild. At the 4A level, VCA powered their way to a 4-0 record through round robin play. They crushed their opponents in their quarter and semi final matches, putting them up against a strong squad from Oxbow whom they had defeated 2-1 during round robin play. Unfortunately, they were unable to match Oxbow s consistency, losing the final 26-24, and settling for the A silver medal, one position better than last year. At the 3A level, Waldheim, last year s provincial 3A champion, pounded out a 4-0 round robin record. Their stellar play did not drop off as they cruised through their quarter final and semi final matches, setting them up to meet Sturgeon Lake in the final. Not having lost a set all weekend, they had no intention of this changing in the gold medal match. But it did, as Sturgeon Lake rose to the challenge. After a back and forth battle, Waldheim emerged victorious, defeating Sturgeon Lake and capturing another 3A championship. Finally, at the 2A level, three of the ten teams competing at provincials were from CVAC. Blaine Lake finished fourth in their pool, while Colonsay and Hepburn finished first and third in their pool, respectively, after Colonsay defeated Hepburn 2-0 in the final match of their round robin. After they both won their quarter final playoff games, with Colonsay defeating Blaine Lake and Hepburn beating Kincaid/College Mathieu in a tight match, the rematch was on. This time, Hepburn s players were able to draw from their previous provincial experience and upset Colonsay 25-19, In the third place match, Colonsay rebounded to defeat Medstead 15-25, 29-27, in an exciting match and captured the 2A bronze medal. In the final, Hepburn looked to overcome years of frustration, hoping to make this the year. And they did, defeating Edam on its home court 25-22, and 25-21, capturing the 2A 2014 gold medal. Amazing! CVAC entered teams entered into nine SHSAA volleyball championships and finished with seven medals - four gold, two silver and one bronze. No SHSAA district has EVER done as well. Congratulations to not only all these championship teams, but to every team that strove for success during the season. We look forward to seeing what successes next year will bring. 10 CVAC Junior results Junior Golf September 18, Valleyview Golf Club, Delisle The 2014 CVAC junior golf championship took place on Thursday, September 18, at the Delisle Valleyview Golf Club on a sunny, wind-free fall afternoon. Forty-six golfers turned out to challenge the course, a beautiful ninehole gem located in the heart of Delisle. Playing to a maximum of double par as a score on every hole, it looked to be a tight battle in every category. In the girls championship, six girls entered to play, a slowly increasing number from year to year. After nine holes, only seven strokes separated the top score from the bottom score. In the end, Maycie Gardipy from Stobart slipped by Samantha Rorke from Vanscoy by one stroke to capture the championship. Interestingly, Maycie, a Grade 9 student, had captured the senior girls championship only two days earlier. Maycie Gardipy Brant Wiebe Kyrell Sopotyk Thirteen boys were placed in the newly created boys non-competitive division. Playing nine holes, scores ranged from the low 50s to the low 70s. After the smoke had cleared and the scores had been totaled, Kyrell Sopotyk from Aberdeen had edged out Liam Yanko from Vanscoy 53 to 54, winning by one stroke. Extremely tight finishes remained the norm in the boys competitive division. Twenty-seven boys battled over 18 holes to determine the CVAC champion. Scores varied more as we have just begun the data collection to establish an accurate entry score using the two division, double par max structure. The golfers met the challenge of walking 18 holes on hilly terrain, many playing an 18 hole round for the first time in their lives. At the end of the day, 11 of the golfers had broken 100, with Brant Wiebe from Delisle edging Brodie Girod from Clavet 85 to 86, making for another one stroke victory. The junior golf championship went very well in beautiful weather, with a great likelihood of returning to Delisle Valleyview next year. The double par maximum per hole and two boys divisions have been well received and will, hopefully, help to bring more athletes out. Almost all of the golfers were in their first tournament, on a course they had never played, with partners they had never met, something most of us have and/or will never experience. All entrants should be congratulated for stepping up and being willing to give it a try. Finally, thanks to the coaches who made it happen. Most of you have made June your month of instruction and the results are starting to show. CVAC depends upon you and your efforts are appreciated. Page 10

11 Junior Volleyball November 1, Osler + Colonsay The 2014 CVAC junior volleyball season came to a close on November 1, on a sunny day in Osler and Colonsay. Following a sixweek season, 26 girls and 17 boys teams entered playoffs in search of the district championship. First round playoffs were hosted by 16 schools on Monday, October 27 and Tuesday, October 28, advancing eight boys and eight girls teams to conference finals. In boys play, Dalmeny, Colonsay, Waldheim and Blaine Lake captured their conference titles, advancing to the final five in Osler. Play was very competitive, with teams splitting many of their two-set matches. Following the completion of the round robin, Dalmeny sat in first place with Osler and Colonsay finishing in second and third. The semi-final was a battle, but Colonsay advanced to the final with a victory over Osler. Pitted against Dalmeny in the final, Colonsay maintained their momentum, sweeping Dalmeny and capturing the 2014 title. The girls championship played out very similarly. Waldheim, Dalmeny, Langham and Warman captured conference titles, advancing to the finals in Colonsay. Extremely competitive play in the round robin concluded with Warman in first place and Dalmeny and Waldheim sitting in second and third. In the semi-final, Dalmeny defeated Waldheim 25-19, in two very tough sets. The final was even tighter, but Dalmeny rode their momentum to a three set victory, defeating Warman High 25-21, 15-25, 25-19, and emerging as the 2014 champions. CVAC would like to congratulate not only the 2014 champions, but every school which took part in the season. We continue to encourage staff and senior high school players to get their standing as coaches and CVAC-approved officials via clinics and exams offered during the season, as this is how the sport will continue to grow and flourish.
