1 National Curriculum Focus: Volleyball Year Group: 3 This unit of work aims to introduce children to a new net game. Children will work systematically through the key principles of the team game as well as the fundamental shots and movements in order to successfully compete in small-sided competitive games. The unit will allow children to explore and In pairs, demonstrating basic throwing and catching skills. Groups of 5- Try not to drop the ball. Understand that if the ball touches the floor that my team would lose a point. Begin introducing rules and terminologies that can be applied in Volleyball. Demonstrate throwing and catching the ball over a net Focus on moving to the flight of the ball with children encouraged to have their knees bent and have their hands in a diamond shape. Groups of 5- Practice catching the ball, pushing it up like a set shot and then another learner to catch it. 1v1 across net/relay style. Demonstrating the correct hand position for the set shot and applying it in a competitive game. Re emphasise the rules and terminologies. These include knees bent, hands in diamond shape, elbows out. Show a diagram of a 3/3 formation in volleyball. In teams of 6- Demonstrate an understanding of the 3/3 formation. Demonstrate using the set shot within a match situation. Children to have an opportunity to discuss how they plan on keeping the ball up in their teams. In pairs- Practice throwing and catching. Then throw, set catch. Then set to set. 2 v 2 s- Demonstrate increasing control of the volleyball to try score points. Self assess your current level in volleyball Demonstrate advanced ball handling skills across a net. Show increasing control of the set shot in conditioned games. Use the set shot technique to catch and throw the ball to try to score a point.

Children will work systematically through the key principles of the team game as well as the fundamental shots and movements in order to successfully compete in small-sided competitive games. The unit will allow children to explore and Introduction to volleyball. Brief about experience/knowledge of the sport. Pacman warm up game- developing basic movement required within volleyball. Basic throwing and catching- reiterating in volleyball, must keep ball off the floor. Games- practicing throwing and catching. Progressing to above head and then attempting to volley ball without catching it. Pacman warm up game- focusing on importance of facing one direction and use of sidestep without having to turn body. Introduction of the net and throwing and catching over a net. Introduction of set shot, technique- diamond shape with hands, catch above head and push back over net. Pacman warm up game repeated with inclusion of a ball. 1 v1 throw and catch games across net. Encourage use of set shot within game. Apply appropriate level of challenge- allow bounce. Progression- 1 v1 set and then volley over net. Brief look at formation on court and how rotation of players works in a game situation. Main focus is understanding formation and importance of players maintaining their position on the court. In groups of 5/6 the class will learn the 3/3 formation. Phase of play to begin with bucket throw, catch and throw to the setter to set the ball for another player to volley over net. Relook at technique for set shot if needed. Make game competitive. Recap of throw-catch-set-volley in partners. Introduction to pop serve- front foot facing net, point arm outstretched with ball in palm- swing other arm back and then forward in a straight line resulting in ball being popped from hand over net. 2v 2 games. Children to begin to look at levels and a possible individual target for the remainder of the topic. Recapping the shots learnt so far, practicing the set and dig shots. In teams of 5/6, throw and catch over the net in a 3/3 formation without dropping the ball. Throwing the ball to someone on your team, who sets over the net. Underarm throw over the net- with intentions of making it difficult for the opposition to catch the ball. Games applying the rules.

The unit will allow children to explore and 6 teams of 5- Basic ball handling skills- catch and throw the ball to each other. In 3 s- Demonstrate the correct technique for the set shot. Introduce the rules and terminologies; this may include diamond shape hands before contact with the ball, knees bent for power. In pairs/3 s, Demonstrate the correct technique for the dig shot. Understand why the dig shot is used. In teams of 5- Match play- Re emphasise terminologies and rules- Palms together and wrists up, contact the ball with wrists, arms straight from knees to shoulders. In lines of 4/5- Demonstrate the correct technique for the spike shot. Demonstrate an understanding of the 3/3 formations. Matches applying rules- Bucket serve from the right player. Progression- Explain rotation when you win back the serve only. In groups of 5/6- demonstrate the correct technique for the block shot. Demonstrate increasing understanding of rules and formations. During matches in todays lesson- keep score, two umpires discuss fair play and rotate roles every 2 minutes. Demonstrate the correct technique for the under arm serve- Knees bent, front foot facing net, back foot facing the side, ball in outstretched hand, hit ball with heel of hand. Self assess current level. Recap and perform a range of shots in competitive games. Select the appropriate shot to play in different games. Refine techniques of important shots in competitive matches. Matches will have different conditions- Ask learner s questions and enable discussions about techniques required.
