Coaching History: Overall Conference Year W L W L Totals Head Coach Julie Torbett, the 2002 Big South Conference Coach of the Year and UNC Asheville s all-time winningest volleyball coach, will begin her 14th year of service to the Bulldog program this season. She has been UNC Asheville s head coach for 13 years after serving as an assistant in the 1993 season. Torbett did an exceptional coaching job last year. She led the Bulldogs to the third best record in school history with a 25-7 overall record. Torbett guided UNC Asheville to three in-season titles and posted impressive nonconference victories over Louisiana Tech, Memphis and Florida International. In the Big South Conference, the Bulldogs finished with a 10-4 league mark, good for third place in the final league standings. UNC Asheville advanced to the Big South Conference championship game for the second time in three years. In addition, junior Elif Unlu became the first UNC Asheville volleyball player to earn Honorable Mention All- American honors and be named All-Region first team. In 2003, Torbett guided the Bulldogs to their first Big South Conference championship game in 11 years. UNC Asheville finished with an overall record and in fourth place in the big South with a 9-5 league mark. The Bulldogs played their best volleyball at the end of the season as they knocked off Birmingham-Southern on its homecourt in the opening round of the tournament and then shocked top-seeded Liberty in the semifinals of the tourney. Torbett s club just missed going to the NCAA Tournament as it took defending Big South champ Winthrop to five games before falling in the fifth game. The 2002 season was a special one for Torbett s program. The Bulldogs were a preseason pick to finish in last place in the Big South. Instead UNC Asheville shocked everyone by producing one of the best turnarounds in NCAA history. The Bulldogs went from a 7-21 campaign in the 2001 season to a 26-8 record. Asheville won its first Big South Conference regular-season championship in 10 years with a 12-2 league record. The Bulldogs claimed the Mercer Invitational and finished runner-up in the High Point Invitational. At the end of the season, Torbett was a unanimous choice for Big South Conference Coach of the Year. In addition, senior libero Leslie Whitfield led the nation in total digs and was an Honorable Mention All- Region performer. Torbett has been with the UNC Asheville program since 1993 when she joined the staff as an assistant coach before being elevated to the head coaching position in During her tenure in Asheville, the former Penn State standout has produced a consistent and winning program. The Bulldogs have never finished lower than fifth in the Big South Conference and during the 2000 season, she became the school s all-time winningest coach with a win at Appalachian State. The Pennsylvania native has a career record at UNC Asheville of In her second year at UNC Asheville in 1995, the Bulldogs finished with a overall record and a number 10 ranking in the South region. Torbett s club opened the season impressively by winning the UNC Preview championship at UNC Charlotte and then set a school record by winning eight straight matches to open the season. In 1996, the Bulldogs finished with a overall record and another third- place finish in the Big South Conference. Torbett s club finished second at the UNC Preview, Furman Invitational and Campbell Invitational. The Bulldogs 18 Asheville Volleyball

2 enjoyed non-conference wins over Appalachian State, UNC Charlotte, East Tennessee State, Furman and Western Carolina. UNCA also enjoyed a win over Big South power UNC Greensboro for the first time in four years. In 1997, a young UNC Asheville squad finished with a overall record despite playing the toughest schedule in school history that included a trip to Penn State, the number one team in the nation and Torbett s alma mater. The Bulldogs still enjoyed some great victories, including wins over Appalachian State, UNC Charlotte and an upset win over Big South regular-season co- champion UMBC. Asheville also took home second place in three different tournaments that season. The 1998 season was another winning season for the Bulldogs. UNC Asheville had one senior and eight freshmen on its roster but still finished with an overall record and advanced to the semifinals of the Big South Conference tournament for the first time in six years. Torbett s charges captured the College of Charleston Invitational without dropping a game and produced the program s third winning season in four years. In 1999, the Bulldogs finished with a overall record but were 8-6 in the Big South Conference and in a tie for third place. UNC Asheville advanced to the semifinals of the league tournament for the second straight year and also knocked off regular-season champ Radford to give the Highlanders their only league loss of the year. The Bulldogs also captured the Mercer Invitational. Student-athletes have really developed under Torbett s guidance. UNC Asheville has had 25 players earn all-conference honors during her time in Asheville. She has also coached two Big South Rookie of the Years. Her teams also do a great job in the classroom as the Bulldogs team GPA is consistently above a Torbett was a middle back defensive specialist for the Penn State University Lady Lions from While at Penn State, she helped lead the program to four consecutive Atlantic 10 Conference championships. The Lady Lions were ranked in the top 20 and made it to the top 10 her senior year. She played for one of the top coaches in the country, Russ Rose. Rose is very proud of the job Torbett has done at UNC Asheville. I am proud to have had a small part in the development of Julie Torbett into the successful volleyball coach at UNC Asheville, commented Rose, who led Penn State to the national championship in Her committment to being the best she could in both academics and athletics were evident when she was a high school athlete and it continued through her college years. The university community and its athletes are especially fortunate to have Julie directing their programs, and I would continue to expect great things from her into the future. Torbett earned a bachelor s degree in exercise and sport science in An Atlantic 10 Academic All- Conference performer her junior year, Torbett was on the Dean s List for three years and earned a 4.0 gradepoint average her sophomore and senior years. She was in the University Scholars Program and the Golden Key National Honor Society. She was a three-sport letterwinner at Eisenhower High School in Russell, Pa., in volleyball, basketball and track and field. Julie lettered in volleyball for four years, was an all-conference performer every season, was team MVP her last two years, and helped lead the school to three league championships. A standout in basketball and track and field, she holds the school record for the 100-and 300-meter hurdles. In April of 2002, Torbett was honored in her hometown by being placed in the Pennsylvania Hall of Fame for Warren County. Torbett doesn t just coach volleyball at UNC Asheville. She is the school s Senior Womans Administrator and works with the Student Athletic Advisory Council. Torbett was also heavily involved with the athletic department s recent successful certification by the NCAA. 10 For more than 20 years, the Big South Conference has been a progressive, NCAA Division I athletic Conference reflecting the energy and growth of the Southeastern United States. Founded in 1983, the Big South has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence both on the field of play and in the classroom. Based in Charlotte, N.C., the Big South Conference s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic league is evident by competitive success on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased football and basketball television packages, the enhancement of the quality of the student-athlete experience, and strategic planning that has carried the Big South through the first decade of the 21st Century. Now in its 23rd year of existence, the Big South Conference continues to emerge, providing quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. The League consists of nine member institutions: Birmingham- Southern College, Charleston Southern University, Coastal Carolina University, High Point University, Liberty University, UNC Asheville, Radford University, Virginia Military Institute and Winthrop University, while its geographic breakdown features Alabama (1 member), North Carolina (2), South Carolina (3) and Virginia (3). Two new members will join the Big South footprint in Gardner-Webb University, an associate member in football, will become a full member, joining Presbyterian College, which is beginning its transition to Division I athletics in The League sponsors nine championship sports for men: baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, indoor/ outdoor track, and tennis, as well as nine for women: basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, indoor/outdoor track and volleyball. Again this year, Big South champions in men s and women s basketball, men s and women s soccer, volleyball, men s and women s golf, baseball, softball, men s and women s tennis and men s and women s track & field will receive automatic bids to NCAA Championships. The Big South continued its growing achievements in , as the League experienced Top 15 rankings in the national RPI in baseball, softball and women s basketball, as well as Top 20 ranking in men s basketball and volleyball. Big South members defeated the No. 1 football and baseball team in the nation (Coastal Carolina football vs. James Madison and Winthrop baseball vs. North Carolina); the Big South had its first-ever national finalist for NCAA Woman of the Year (Winthrop s Janiva Willis); Liberty s Josh McDougal became the first Big South athlete to receive All-America honors in the three running sports in the same season (cross country, indoor track and outdoor track); the Big South placed two teams in the NCAA Baseball Regionals for the fifth time in six seasons; the Conference went 2-1 in its first-ever participation in the ESPN BracketBusters men s basketball event; Coastal Carolina men s golf reached the NCAA Championship for the second-straight year; the Big South had more than 20 All-Americans, including Big South Staff six first-team selections. Last year s academic success mirrored the on-field achievements. A total of 32 Big South student-athletes were named Academic All-District, four of which earned Academic All-America accolades. In football, Charleston Southern s Adam DeGraffenreid was tabbed the I-AA Athletic Directors National Scholar-Athlete of the Year, the second time in three years the award was bestowed upon a Big South football player. In celebrating its 20th anniversary in , the Big South inducted its inaugural Hall of Fame class, which included 11 former student-athletes and administrators who were an integral part in the Big South s early development and vitality. The Hall of Fame now stands at 20 members, as five more individuals were inducted in the Spring of In addition to the Big South s athletic accomplishments, the League also recognizes and honors academic excellence. Each year, the Presidential Honor Roll and the George A. Christenberry Awards honor student-athletes outstanding work in the classroom. The Christenberry Award recognizes student-athletes graduating with a 4.0 grade point average. Furthermore, the Conference s Sports Information Directors annually select a Scholar-Athlete in each Conference sport, plus a male and female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry initially began recruiting members into the Big South. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. The League s seven charter members were Armstrong State, Augusta, Campbell, Charleston Southern, Coastal Carolina, Radford and Winthrop. In 1989, George F. Buddy Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner. Under Sasser s leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the finest teams in the nation. Sasser was so integral to the growth and foundation of the League that in 2000, the Commissioner s Cup -- the annual award given to the institution with the most successful athletic year -- was renamed the George F. Sasser Cup. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser, who would continue to serve the League as Director of Athletics at Coastal Carolina until his retirement in In his 10 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference, including the development of the Big South Marketing Group, which has resulted in increased revenues and exposure for the Conference and its members.
