Each team won five bouts, but Wisconsin got bonus points with a pin and a major to secure the victory. The Badgers actually erased two deficits, winning the dual's final three bouts to erase a Penn State advantage. The match began at 174, where junior James Yonushonis (Philipsburg, Pa.), fresh off a 3-0 performance at the Pa. Duals, downed No. 10 Kelly Flaherty of Wisconsin 5-3. Yonushonis used a first period take down and outstanding defense to post the upset win, his second straight over a ranked opponent. Yonushonis No. 7 Travis Frick of Lehigh last Sunday in Penn State's win over the No. 8 Mountain Hawks. Back to the top of the line-up at 125, Nittany Lion true freshman Brad Pataky (Clearfield, Pa.) found himself down 5-0 after one period to No. 17 Colin Cudd. Cudd scored his take down and near fall with under ten seconds remaining in the period. Near the end of the second period, Cudd scored another take down and three-point near fall to lead 11-0 heading into the third. Cudd coasted to a 13-1 major decision. After winning the first three matches and leading 9-0, Penn State found itself down 10-9 at the midway point, despite winning three of the five bouts. Freshman Jake Strayer (South Fork, Pa.) scored an early take down of Wisconsin's Zach Tanelli at 133, but the duo would end the first period deadlocked at 3-3. Tanelli chose down to begin the second period. Strayer rode Tanelli long enough to build up a 1:31 riding time advantage before Tanelli's escape game the Badger a 4-3 lead heading into the third period. With Strayer taking down to start the third, the Nittany Lion freshman escaped quickly to tie the score 4-4 while maintaining a solid riding time edge. Strayer scored a take-down with :35 left that was followed by a quick escape. Strayer stayed in control, added the riding time point and posted a 7-5 win. The victory put Penn State back up No. 16 DeWitt Driscoll (Connellsville, Pa.) posted a convincing 5-0 win at 141. Driscoll scored a late first period take down and rode Wisconsin's Tony Turner out to lead 2-0 after one period. Driscoll chose down to begin the second period, reversed Turner midway through the period and rode him out to lead 4-0 after two with a minute-plus riding time edge. Turner began the final period down but could not escape at all and Driscoll posted the 5-0 win. A battle of two nationally ranked grapplers took place at 149 with No. 14 James Woodall (St. Dupont, Pa.) of Penn State facing No. 17 Tyler Turner. With Penn State up in the dual scoring, Woodall scored two first period take downs to lead 4-1 heading into the second. Turner chose down to start the second period and quickly escaped. A Turner take down and a Woodall escape made the score 5-4 Woodall heading into the final period. Woodall chose down to begin the third and was let up. Leading 6-4, Woodall would nearly score two take downs, only to be held off by Turner. Turner would take advantage of the second chances to take Woodall down with seconds left to knot the score at 6-6 and send it into a sudden victory period. Woodall would shoot and nearly get a take down, but Turner's superb defense quickly turned it into a take down of his own, claiming a hard-fought 8-6 sudden victory win. The win cut Penn State's lead to with just two bouts remaining. Freshman Neil Bretz (Carlisle, Pa.), a 174-pounder, wrestled up at 184 as he filled in for No. 1 ranked Eric Bradley. Wisconsin's Matt Maciag jumped out to a 5-1 lead as the second period wound down before Bretz scored a take down and a three-point near fall to lead 6-5 after two. Bretz nearly pinned Maciag, getting a called fall just after the second period buzzer sounded. Bretz chose down to start the third period and immediately escaped to go up 7-5. Another take down and a two-point near fall gave Bretz a convincing 11-5 win and put the Nittany Lions up 6-0. Sophomore All-American Phil Davis (Harrisburg, Pa.), fresh off being named Big Ten Wrestler of the Week for three pins in the Pa. Duals last Sunday, put Penn State up 9-0 with a hard-fought 8-7 TB win over Wisconsin's Dallas Herbst at 197. Davis scored an early take down in the first and built up solid riding time edge before Herbst scored an escape as the first period ended. Leading 2-1, Davis chose down to start the second period, escaped and scored a take down to lead 5-1 heading into the final period. Davis got caught with a take down and near fall late in the third and the bout headed to an unexpected sudden victory period. After a scoreless one-minute SV period, the tiebreaker periods began with Davis choosing down and scoring an important escape with just seconds left. Davis then held Herbst down in the second TB to post the hard-fought 8-7 TB decision. Senior HWT Joel Edwards (Upper Darby, Pa.) found himself in a battle with Wisconsin's Kyle Massey. Edwards scored a first period take-down, which Massey reversed out. Tied 2-2, Edwards chose down to start the second period. Massey rode No. 19 Edwards through the first half of the period before pinning him at the 4:11 mark. The six points pulled the Badgers to within three, 9-6, four bouts into the match. Another match-up of ranked foes took place at 157, with Nittany Lion Nathan Galloway (State College, Pa.), ranked No. 10, facing No. 15 Craig Henning of Wisconsin. After a scoreless first period, Galloway chose bottom to start the second, escaping easily eight seconds in to lead 1-0. It was the only scoring of the second period. The third period began with Henning taking down. Galloway let Henning up and the score was tied 1-1. A scoreless third period sent the crucial match to sudden victory, which was also scoreless. Galloway chose down in the first of two tie-breakers but could not escape. With Henning taking down, Galloway needed to keep the Badger down. Henning reversed Galloway, Galloway reversed Henning and the match went to a second SV period tied 3-3. No scoring in that period sent the match into a second TB, with Henning choosing down and once again reversing Galloway. Leading 5-3 in the final :30, Henning rode Galloway out to post a 5-3 TB2 win and put Wisconsin up Freshman Phil Bomberger (Port Royal, Pa.) needed a win over No. 20 Jake Donar of Wisconsin at 165 to secure a win for Penn State, Donar scored an early first period take down and added more than two minute's worth of riding time as he rode Bomberger out. Donar took down to start the second period and quickly escaped to a 3-0 lead. But the Nittany Lion freshman was game, scoring two take downs to knot the score at 4-4 heading into the deciding third period. Bomberger chose neutral but was take down and trailed 6-4 with 1:20 left. An escape with :39 left had Bomberger down 6-5 and a twoplus minute riding time disadvantage. Bomberger had a near-take down with :18 left but was held off and taken down with seconds left. Two back-points as time expired and an RT point made the final 11-5 and gave Wisconsin the win.
