The Universiade is an International multi-sport event, organized for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). Hughes and Day joined forces to capture a pair of silver medals - the first beach volleyball medals ever for the United States at the World University Games. Day and Hughes made it to the gold medal match, where they fell to Germany s Karla Borger and Britta Buethe, 21-19, It was the second time that the pair had faced the German team, defeating Borger and Buethe in the third round, 21-14, 17-21, Day and Hughes advanced to the s final by defeating China s Jin Jieqiong and Miao Chenchen in the semifinals, 18-21, 21-19, No stranger to working together on the beach, the duo made history in 2007 when they became the lowest-seeded team to advance from the qualifier to an AVP event. ROAD WARRIORS After playing just nine of 30 matches in 2010 at home, LMU will once again spend the majority of the schedule on the road. 4 LET S SETTLE THIS ON NEUTRAL GROUND LMU has been extremely impressive in matches played at neutral sites, in which neither team is playing on their home court. Despite a pair of losses at the BYU Molten Classic, LMU was 6-2 last year on neutral court, and is 33-8 (.805) over the last 10 seasons. LMU has posted perfect neutral records in five of the last 10 seasons. Over that span, the only year in which LMU did not manage at least a.500 record was in 2004, playing to a 0-2 mark. Hensley earned a spot on the honorable mention All-WCC squad, while also taking home All-Freshman team honors. Hensley burst onto the scene in 2010, collecting 258 kills at a rate of 2.50 per set. She hit.290 over the course of the year, second on the team in that category and 10th in the West Coast Conference. Hensley also hit.322 with 149 kills (3.04 per set) in West Coast Conference matches, claiming seventh in both categories. A native of San Diego, Calif., she totaled three block solos and 54 total blocks en route to 289 points. Hensley s 258 kills placed second on the team in that category, while her hitting percentage was tops amongst freshmen on the LMU roster and second only to San Diego s Freshman of the Year winner Chloe Ferrari in the conference ranks. PCH CHALLENGE Separated by 19.1 miles of scenic coastline, longtime cross-town adversaries Loyola Marymount and Pepperdine have come together in an effort to boost their decades-long rivalry with the creation of the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) Challenge. The series, which is in its second year, serves as an annual scorecard for the NCAA-sponsored athletic contests between the Lions and Waves, and challenges each institution to rise above the other within the West Coast Conference. LMU and Pepperdine will be represented by over 12 of their intercollegiate athletic teams through both regular and post-season competitions over the course of the academic calendar. Any head-to-head competition, including matches in the post-season and tournaments throughout the year, will be counted toward the scoring and added to the scorecard as they occur. For the sports in which the two teams do not meet head-to-head, the teams will battle for points that will be awarded on the basis of overall finish at their respective post-season championships. The Waves have won each of the first two competitions. To learn more about the PCH Challenge and view the current scorecard, please visit: REMEMBER...IT S JUST A NUMBER The Lions are scheduled to play 10 matches this year against teams that at least received votes in the 2011 AVCA Division I Coaches Top-25 Preseason Poll. The ranked foes waste no time making their presence known this year, as the Lions open the 2011 season against tournament-qualifier and vote-receiver Cal State Fullerton. Non-conference adversaries UCLA (#11), Long Beach State (#22) and Kentucky all at least received votes, as the Lions third match of the year will be against the Bruins. WCC-foe San Diego ranks 20th according to the preseason poll, while Pepperdine and Saint Mary s also received votes. LMU played four matches against ranked foes last year, finishing 0-4 in those contests. Rankings have been nothing short of perfect in the recent past when predicting LMU s fate against ranked opponents, as the Lions have dropped 26 consecutive matches against those teams. The last Lion victory against a ranked opponent came on October 5, 2006 at Santa Clara, as the Lions earned a sweep of the then-no. 12 Broncos. GET OFF ON THE RIGHT PAW Despite going down in straight sets last year to then-no. 10 USC, the Lions have had a knack for coming out of the gates strong in recent memory, having won 12 of their last 14 season-openers. The only other loss over that span came in 2007 to St. John s. In addition, LMU has recorded seven sweeps and won in four sets on four occasions. AND THE SURVEY SAYS According to the 2011 Coaches Preseason Poll, the LMU volleyball team is picked to finish fifth this year in the newly expanded West Coast Conference. Pepperdine received seven first place votes and a total of 62 points to earn the top spot in the preseason poll. The Waves finished third last year, but will be returning the most Preseason All-Conference selections of all nine teams. Saint Mary s and San Diego split the remaining first place votes, with the Gaels expected to finish second again this year, in front of reigning WCC champion San Diego. Last year s fifth place finisher Santa Clara came ahead of LMU and newcomer BYU, securing the fourth place spot. The Lions secured fourth place in the WCC last season, while BYU also finished fourth last season in its final year with the Mountain West Conference. Portland and San Francisco shared the seventh place spot in the preseason poll, while Gonzaga landed in ninth. 4

7 HEAD COACH TOM BLACK Tom Black enters his second season as LMU s head coach after being hired on January 19th, In his inaugural season, Black guided his 2010 roster of Lions to an even mark and a fourth-place finish in the West Coast Conference after being selected to finish eighth in the 2010 preseason coaches poll. Black saw two of his athletes garner All-Conference recognition at the conclusion of the season as Jasmine Rankins took home first team honors and Alyse Hensley earned an honorable mention nod and a spot on the All-Freshman team. Including a record at Division II UC San Diego, Black has accumulated a record as a head coach in women s volleyball. The.747 winning percentage is the third-best mark in the NCAA amongst active head coaches with a minimum of five years as a four-year college head coach, but with fewer than five years at the Division I level. Most recently, Black spent the summer of 2011 as a consultant coach for the US National Team as it prepares for the 2012 London Games. The summer stint with the National Team was Black s second in as many years. Under his title, Black primarily assisted in the training sessions at the American Sports Center as the US National Team readied itself to compete in the Montreux Volley Masters event held from June 7-12 in Montreux, Switzerland. The US finished Pool Play with a 2-1 record and advanced to the bronze-medal match before falling to China in four sets. Before coming to LMU, Black served five seasons at the helm of the UC San Diego women s volleyball program. In all, Black coached four UCSD players to All-America selections, including a trio in Moreover, the 2006 Tachikara/ AVCA D-II Pacific Region Coach of the Year watched 20 of his student-athletes garner California Collegiate Athletic Association All-Conference recognition, capped by five selections in Over his five years, Black posted a career record of , good for a.799 winning percentage, and saw his teams ranked in the AVCA Top-25 of every week for his final four seasons. Black s 2009 Triton squad finished with an overall record of 29-3 and was ranked as high as No. 2 in the nation en route to a spot in the NCAA West Region semifinals. The Tritons 2009 trip to the postseason marked the fourth consecutive visit over Black s five-year tenure at UC San Diego, while the No. 7 final national ranking was the second top-10 finish for Black at UCSD. Black also saw three of his student-athletes earn AVCA All-America recognition in his final year, including Sylvia Schmidt, who took home a CCAA Player of the Year award, the second such recipient under Black s guidance. In 2008, the Tritons handed their rival, then-no. 1 Cal State San Bernardino, its first loss of the year and qualified for the NCAA Tournament. UCSD won over 20 games for the 25th time in school history that year, while Black guided Rebecca Bailey to the school s all-time career kills mark and her second consecutive All-American bid. In 2007, the Tritons knocked off the No. 2 team in the country on the road and advanced to the NCAA Pacific Region Semifinals. Also, the 2007 Tritons had an All-American and four studentathletes on the CCAA All-Conference squad. Just one year after taking the reins at UC San Diego, Black directed the Tritons back to the postseason in 2006, finishing the year with a 26-3 overall record, a NCAA Elite Eight appearance, a NCAA Pacific Regional Championship and a final national ranking of No. 5. For his efforts, Black was named the 2006 Tachikara/AVCA D-II Pacific Region Coach of the Year and CCAA Co-Coach of the Year. That season also produced the first of two CCAA Players of the Year under Black s guidance, as Nicole Courtney earned the honor. In 2005, Black took over as head coach for the UCSD women s volleyball program with six new starters, leading the team to victories over two ranked opponents as part of a 19-8 record on the season. UCSD had three players named to the All-CCAA team and one student-athlete earned AVCA Pacific Region honors. Before coming to UCSD for his inaugural year, Black spent two seasons as an assistant coach for the men s volleyball program at USC. Prior to his stint with the Trojans, he spent the 2002 and 2003 seasons as the men s head coach at Pierce Junior College in Woodland Hills, Calif. He also was an assistant in 2003 with the Pierce women s team. His men s squads won the 2002 and 2003 California state junior college crowns, finishing 15-3 in 2002 and 17-2 in On the club circuit, Black served four years as the co-director of the Santa Monica Beach Club team. He was the head coach of SMBC s boys 18s team in 2003, 2004 and 2005 after serving as an assistant in 2002 with the 18s team that won the bronze medal at the Junior Olympics. He also was the head coach of SMBC s girls 17s team in As a player, Black was a four-year varsity letterman for the UCSD men s volleyball program from , setting numerous hitting records and earning All-MPSF honorable mention notice as a senior in He was Volleyball Magazine s Small College Player of the Year in 1996, while also earning Small College All-America honors that same year. Black received his bachelor s degree in political science from UCSD in A California native, Black prepped at Crespi High in Encino, Calif., where he made the All-CIF third team as a senior in BLACK VITALS College Education: Crespi High School UC San Diego, Bachelor of Arts, 1996 Coaching Experience: 2010-Present Head Coach, LMU Head Coach, UC San Diego Assistant Coach, USC Men s Head Coach, LA Pierce CC Men s Head Coach, Santa Monica Beach Club Head Coach, Thousand Oaks HS Boy s Assistant Coach, Royal HS Boy s Recognition: 2006 AVCA D-II Pacific Region Coach of the Year CCAA Co-Coach of the Year Head COACHING CAREER RECORD (Women s): year overall pct.
