1 2016 Casas Del Rio State Tennis Championships Robertson Wins Third Straight Tennis Title The Robertson Cardinals captured the blue trophy for the third consecutive year at the 2016 Casas Del Rio Girls A-4A State Tennis Championships, winning the team and doubles titles. As a team, the No. 1 seeded Cardinals defeated the No. 3 seed Mesilla Valley Christian SonBlazers 5-2, dropping just three matches during the entire event. Overall, it was the fourth blue trophy for the girls tennis program in school history. Robertson defeated the No. 8 seed Desert Academy (9-0), the No. 5 seed Hope Christian (5-1) and Mesilla Valley Christian on their way to a third straight state title. In singles competition, the No. 2 seed Victoria Speziani of Hope Christian faced off against the No. 1 seed Patty Borunda of Mesilla Valley Christian in the championship match. Speziani won in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6 (4). Speziani beat McKenna Craff of Bosque (6-4, 6-2), Makenna Takeshida of MVCS (6-2, 6-2) and Borunda. She became the first Hope Christian girls tennis player to win a state title in singles action. Anne Ikard of Mesilla Valley Christian placed third with a 6-0, 6-4 win over teammate Makenna Takeshida. Robertson would win the school s second ever doubles title in 2016, as Brandelyn Fulgenzi and Lauren Fulgenzi defeated their cousins Jaci Fulgenzi and Jenese Fulgenzi in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2. Brandelyn and Lauren, the tournament s No. 1 seed, breezed through the tournament with straight wins in every match, dropping just four sets the entire tournament.
2 Albuquerque Academy Wins Eighth Blue Trophy For the first time since 2006, the Albuquerque Academy Chargers captured the blue trophy in girls tennis with a 5-0 victory over Farmington at the 2016 Casas Del Rio State Tennis Championships. The win marked the eighth time the Chargers won the state title, as the Scorpions had won the blue trophy six of the last seven years. Albuquerque Academy dropped just one set during the team competition beating Artesia (8-1), Centennial (5-0) and Farmington. In singles action, the Chargers Melissa Pick, the No. 1 seed, won her fourth individual state title defeating teammate and No. 2 seed Dani Apodaca 6-0, 6-2. Pick became just the sixth player to win four individual state titles in tournament history as any classification. Emily Nguyen of Farmington finished third with a three set win over Sidra Hsieh-Ratliff of Los Alamos (61, 3-6, 6-4). In doubles play, the No. 1 seeded doubles team from Centennial, Carrie Alberson and Christa Alberson won the school s first ever doubles title with a 6-3, 7-5 win over the No. 2 seed from Albuquerque Academy, Lily Dang and Rachel Homan. The Alberson sister cruised through the first two rounds of the tournament before a hard fought three-set match about Los Alamos Anaya and Skurikhin. Albuquerque High Repeats as 6A Champions The Albuquerque High Bulldogs captured the 2016 Casas Del Rio State Tennis Championship for the second straight year with a win over the No. 2 seed La Cueva Bears, 5-2. The Bulldogs defeated Cibola (5-4), Sandia (5-0) and La Cueva. The win marks the second blue trophy for Albuquerque high in school history. Ivana Corely of Eldorado captured her second straight individual state title with a 6-1, 6-2 straight sets win over Caitlenn Dennis of Hobbs. Corley dropped just four games the entire championships, beating Arianna Calvillo of Hobbs (6-1, 6-0), Megan Sampath of Alamogordo (6-0, 6-0) and Dennis. Mikayla Herrera of La Cueva placed third with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Sampath in the third place match.
3 Madelynn Chavez and Abigail Nielsen of Albuquerque High captured the doubles title for the second straight year with a straight set win over Sarianna Kuuttila and Christine Roerick of La Cueva, 6-4, 7-5. Chavez and Nielsen won all their doubles matches in straight sets. The team of Lydia and Hannah Boisvert took home third place with a three-set thriller over Seay and Jones of Hobbs, 6-7, 6-2, 6-2. Bosque School Captures First State Tennis Title The Bosque School Bobcats defeated the Robertson Cardinals in the A-4A Casas Del Rio State Tennis Championship match to win the school s first-ever boys tennis title. Bosque won 5-3. It wasn t easy for the No. 1 seeded Bobcats, beating Taos (6-3), NMMI (5-2) and the 2015 champions, Robertson. It marked the first time since 2010 that a team other than Robertson or NMMI has won the state title. In singles action, Robertson s Warren Fulgenzi breezed through the singles bracket, dropping just five matches. Fulgenzi defeated Will McDermott of St. Michael s, 6-3, 6-0 to win the second singles title for Cardinals since 2007 and the 18th in school history. On his way to the singles title, Fulgenzi defeated Ian Watson of St. Michael s (6-2, 6-0), David Atkins of Sandia Prep (6-0, 6-0) and McDermott. Will Katzman and Niel Katzman of Bosque School earned the school s third ever doubles title and the second straight title with a 6-1, 6-1 win over teammates Cameron Wall and August Voelker in the A-4A doubles championship match. The No. 1 seed Katzman/Katzman won two of their three matches in straight sets, beating Desert Academy(6-3, 6-2), Mesilla Valley Christian (7-6 (6), 4-6, 6-4) and their own teammates from Bosque.
4 Chargers Hoist 20th Blue Trophy Albuquerque Academy continued their dominance in boys tennis, winning their state record 14th consecutive championship and the school s 20th blue trophy. The Chargers went a perfect 19-0 in the team competition, defeating Los Alamos in the championship match, 5-0. Albuquerque Academy beat Centennial (9-0), Piedra Vista (5-0) and Los Alamos. No. 1 seed Malachi Coleman of Albuquerque Academy won the school s 30th singles title in two sets over teammate Henry Collis of Albuquerque Academy, 6-1, 6-4 On his way to the title, Coleman beat Sol Rascon of Farmington (6-0, 6-0), Ned Merrion of Farmingtom (6-2, 6-0) and Collis. In doubles action, freshmen Coleton and Hunter Hootman of Albuquerque Academy won the 25th doubles title in school history over teammates Jack Keller and Abraham Yohannes in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. It was the second straight year the Hootman s won the doubles championship. The Hootman twins cruised to the finals with wins over Los Alamos (6-1, 6-2), Farmington (6-0, 6-1) and Los Alamos (62, 6-2). Bears Grab 13th Blue Trophy The La Cueva Bears won their 13th state team title at the 2016 Casas Del Rio Boys 6A State Tennis Championships, 5-0 over rival Eldorado. It marked the third straight title for the Bears, who won in 2014 and 2015 and had a nine year winning streak from 2001 to La Cueva cruised through the tournament on their way to earning the blue trophy, beating Cleveland (9-0), Carlsbad (5-0) and Eldorado. No. 2 seed Michael Mounho of Eldorado High School became the school s eighth singles champion with a straight sets win over No. 4 seed Sagar Patel of Hobbs, 6-3, 6-0. Mounho had wins over Nick Conkle of Valley (6-0, 6-0), Ryan Jimenez of Hobbs (6-1, 6-1), Gavin Korsan of La Cueva (6-1, 6-2) and Echt-Wilson. In doubles action, the No. 1 seed doubles team of Kyler Kunzler and Tyler Paddor of
