Coming off a stellar home weekend, winning the Florida State Invitational 3-0, the Seminole volleyball team heads into a tough schedule as they take on No. 23 Long Beach State on Thursday, Sept. 4, and welcome North Florida and South Dakota State as they host the Seminole Tri-Tournament on Sept The last meeting with the ranked team from the west coast was last season at the Long Beach State Tournament on September 8. Florida State fell in three sets, extending the 49ers all-time streak to 4-0 against the Garnet and Gold. The Seminoles dominated at their home tournament last weekend, sweeping Florida A&M and Stetson and downing Bowling Green 3-1. In a ive-way tie for second in the ACC, Florida State currently leads the conference in team hitting percentage (.392) and service aces (2.40/set) and is second for assists (13.73/set), kills (14.91/set) and blocks (2.60/set). In the individual ACC rankings, Florida State Invitational MVP Jordana Price tops the league with a.610 hitting percentage while fellow junior Nikki Baker is tops for assists as she averaged per set over the weekend. Following the LBSU match, FSU begins its second home tournament, the Seminole Tri-Tournament, with the irst match against North Florida at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Ospreys will then take on South Dakota State at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday before the Seminoles face the SDSU Jack Rabbits at noon on Sunday. 3 SEMINOLES WIN INVITE ONCE AGAIN... The Seminoles opened the season hosting the Florida State Invitational on August and for the third straight season walked away with the tournament crown. FSU downed crosstown rival Florida A&M in a perfect 3-0 sweep Friday night before taking on Bowling Green on Saturday. The Falcons put up a good ight but were no match for the Noles who went on to win 3-1. Sealing the lawless weekend was a 3-0 win over Stetson with FSU taking the irst set 25-2 with junior Nikki Baker going on a 17-serve streak. FACING RANKED OPPONENTS IN Facing off with top-ranked opponents is nothing new for Florida State as they competed against a handful of Top 25 squads last season. In 2008, the Seminoles irst ranked match-up is against No. 23 Long Beach State on Sept. 4 at Tully Gym. Last year the Noles fell to the 49ers 3-0 at the Long Beach State Tournament. Just four days after the LBSU match FSU will welcome the rival Florida Gators (ranked No. 8) to Tully in a Sun Sports televised match on Monday, Sept. 8. NEW LEADER FOR NOLES IN Florida State volleyball welcomes head coach Chris Poole in the 2008 season. Poole comes to FSU after 14 successful seasons at the helm of the University of Arkansas volleyball program where he led the Lady Backs to 11 Southeastern Conference Western Division titles and nine SEC tournament titles. Arkansas made 11 postseason appearances under the guidance of Poole and held a record. Poole has 21 years of coaching experience and garners a career record. DJURIC LIKELY TO REDSHIRT THIS YEAR... Senior Mira Djuric is a probable redshirt for the 2008 season following shoulder surgery she underwent in December of In her irst season as a Seminole, the outside hitter led the team with 438 kills and 83 aces which is now second for all-time season highs in the FSU record book. BARRY AND DJURIC MAKE PRE SEASON ALL ACC TEAM... For the second consecutive season, Florida State placed two athletes on the preseason All-ACC team. This year junior Brianna Barry makes her second appearance on the list and senior Mira Djuric earns a spot, but will likely take a redshirt season following shoulder surgery. THE NEW CLASS... The 2008 season brings in ive newcomers: Alliya Drzewiecki, Drew Dudley, Rachael Morgan, Abby Niekamp and Courtney Zuber. Leading the freshman class will be Drzwiecki and Morgan at the outside hitter position and Niekamp, who played for FSU in the spring season, at middle blocker. Dudley, who also gained experience playing for FSU in the spring, and Zuber will both contribute as defensive specialists. Drzewiecki (Toledo, Ohio) was a four-time member of the USA Junior National Team ( ) and set the Ohio state record for career kills with 997 in Morgan (Tauranga, New Zealand) was the 2007 Australian Nationals MVP and placed ninth at the World Beach Volleyball Competition in Poland that same year. Niekamp (Celina, Ohio) set school records at Marion Local in six categories and was named Player of the Year for her district in SEMINOLES FIFTH IN PRESEASON ACC POLL... The Atlantic Coast Conference announced on Tuesday, August 12, the 2008 preseason volleyball poll as decided upon by votes from the league s 12 head coaches. Florida State earned 84 points and is tied with Virginia for ifth while the 2007 ACC Champion Clemson is once again favored to win the conference title this year. The Seminoles ended the 2007 ACC campaign in ifth with a 13-9 record and look to improve on that performance under new head coach Chris Poole. Junior Nikki Baker returns this season as the sole setter for the Seminoles with the departure of sophomore Lauren Rosenthal. Earning ample court time in 2007, Baker averaged assists per game and 873 overall. In ACC action she was averaging assists per game and was third on the squad last season with 184 digs AT TULLY GYM... The Seminoles played 13 matches at home on Lucy McDaniel Court in 2007, including the season opening win over UNC Asheville at the Florida State Invitational on August 25. Of those 13 home events, FSU won 11 with two losses coming at the hands of ACC opponents Clemson and Duke. Duke was ranked #14 in the nation at the time and Clemson went on to win the conference title. 3

4 FSU IN SEASON OPENERS... Florida State has won its season opener for six straight years since 2003 and a total of 27 times in the program s 32 years. The last time the Seminoles fell at the start of the season was in 2002 when FSU lost 3-0 to Illionois State at the Illinois State Tournament on August 30. The Seminoles have started their season in Tully Gym 18 times since 1976 and have won 16 of those matches. The two losses came back in 1981 to Ohio State and in 1985 to Georgia. 6 The 2008 volleyball season brings a new face at the helm of the Seminole program in head coach Chris Poole. Poole brings a wealth of knowledge and experience after heading the program at the University of Arkansas for 14 accomplished seasons. Poole started the University of Arkansas volleyball program in 1994 and was not only successful, but led the Lady Razorbacks to 11 Southeastern Conference Western Division titles. Add to that, 11 postseason appearances - two NIVC and nine NCAA - along with the SEC Tournament title and numerous individual player honors. Upon arriving in Fayetteville in 1993, Poole personally handled every element of building the program from buying the irst pieces of equipment, hiring the assistants and recruiting the players, to renovating the court and building locker room facilities. With head coaching stints at Arkansas, Arkansas State and Arkansas Tech, Poole holds a career record in 21 seasons and has been named conference coach of the year seven times and was pegged the South Region Coach of the Year in In 24 years of collegiate coaching, including three seasons as an assistant coach at Arkansas Tech, Poole has won 19 conference or divisional championships and has been to the inals 17 times in 22 conference tournaments. He has also taken his teams to a postseason tournament in 19 of his 24 years. During his 14 seasons at Arkansas, in which he compiled a record, Poole produced two AVCA All-Americans, three AVCA honorable mention All-Americans, 24 players with 44 All-SEC honors, three SEC Freshmen of the Year and 25 AVCA All-District/All-Region honorees. In addition to the success on the court, Poole s teams excelled in the classroom as well with 67 SEC Academic Honor Roll selections, 10 CoSIDA All-District selections, two H. Boyd McWhorter Scholar-Athlete inalists and one McWhorter winner. Poole certainly made his mark in the SEC as well. Since 1994, he guided Arkansas to a record in the SEC regular season for a 71 percent league winning mark. Poole and the Lady Razorbacks were even more impressive against the Western Division winning 11 of 14 titles. Poole spent an entire year away from competition preparing for the Razorback s inaugural season in 1994 and it was time well spent as he led Arkansas to a overall record, a 10-5 SEC mark and a SEC Western Division title with a perfect 10-0 divisional record in the irst year of competition. The Lady Razorbacks inished third overall in the league that year and played well enough to earn a postseason bid to the National Invitational Volleyball Coaches tournament in Kansas City where they inished seventh in a ield of 20 teams. Poole was selected the 1994 SEC Coach of the Year while two of his players (Krystal Osborne and Jaimie Torromeo) earned All-SEC honors and one player (Osborne) earned All-District honors. Poole s ability to build was proven irst with Arkansas Tech then at Arkansas State. He took over days prior to the 1987 season at ASU and his irst team showed the effects with a dismal 8-24 record. But with one season under Poole s careful tutelage, virtually the same team was 41-1 the next year, launching a ive-year run of winning seasons for the Lady Indians. His 1988 team had a 33-match win streak, longest in the nation, and posted a schoolrecord 41-1 overall mark. The next year, ASU had a 34-match win streak, notched the Lady Indian record with 43 wins (43-6 overall) and was ranked ninth in the South Region. In his last season at ASU, the Lady Indians were 41-6 and received an automatic bid into the NCAA tournament in ASU entered the 32-team NCAA ield with the most wins of any team, but lost a tough four-game match to the Northwest Region s top-seeded team, Long Beach State. Prior to ASU, Poole was an assistant and later head coach at Arkansas Tech. In two seasons as head coach at ATU, he posted a record, winning the Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference title in 1985 as co-head coach and inishing runner-up as head coach in He started his collegiate career in as a graduate assistant for the nationally ranked Arkansas Tech Golden Suns. Tech was 58-9 and a perfect 24-0 conference mark in two seasons with Poole as an assistant coach. A native of Heber Springs in north-central Arkansas, Poole is a 1983 graduate of Arkansas Tech and earned a master s degree from Tech in He is a member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association and has served on the AVCA s All-American, All-South Region and All-South Region Ranking committees and is also an AVCA Top 25 voter. Poole and his wife, Toni, a former Arkansas State track and ield standout, have two children, son Joshua and daughter Taylor. 7 2008 OUTLOOK THE 2008 FLORIDA STATE VOLLEYBALL SEASON BRINGS IN A NEW FACE AT THE HELM OF THE PROGRAM, HEAD COACH CHRIS POOLE. POOLE JOINS THE SEMINOLE STAFF AFTER 14 VERY SUCCESSFUL SEASONS LEADING THE UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS LADY BACKS TO 11 SEC WEST ERN DIVISION TITLES AND NINE NCAA TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES. In 21 years of coaching, Poole has garnered a record and received seven conference Coach of the Year awards. It s a wonderful feeling, Poole said. I m so excited to become a Seminole. I have always loved building programs and at three different universities I have been able to do that. At Florida State, I see a program that already has a good foundation and has the support of the new administration. I think the community is really excited about seeing the volleyball program climb again and for me, that s just a great situation to go into. THE SCHEDULE... JUNIOR BRIANNA BARRY ON THE SCHEDULE I think our schedule this year is more challenging than last season because we re on the road for most of September and the irst weekend in October. It s going to be a little intense. But I m excited for Long Beach State to come here this year and I m obviously excited to play Florida in Tully Gym. SENIOR ASHLEE MOON ON THE SPRING SEASON Our spring was amazing. As a team we grew so much on and off the court. We worked through a lot of mental bumps that held us up last fall, so that s our biggest success beyond winning the FSU and College of Charleston tournaments. 8 2008 OUTLOOK BARRY ON THE NEWCOMERS I think a big key for the new class is Abby being here for the spring. I think she s going to be a good leader for the freshman class because she s gotten her feet wet and has the experience from playing college ball with us during the spring season. Alliya, Rachel and Courtney are also very strong additions. We ve seen them play a few times over the summer so I m really excited to see how they re going to grow as collegiate volleyball players. BARRY ON BAKER Throughout the spring and summer, Nikki has matured a lot which is good for us. She really has that capacity to lead us this year, so I m excited to see how we can respond to what Nikki does for us on the court and how we can grow with her. MIDDLE BLOCKERS... The middle blockers look to be a powerhouse position in 2008 Brianna Barry will lead the middles in her junior season Barry topped the team in 2007 with 97 total blocks Newcomer Abby Niekamp joins veterans Jordana Price and Lauren Young in the front row in 2008 All four Seminoles in the middle blocker position have experience playing at the collegiate level. Junior Brianna Barry was a starter in both her freshman and sophomore years and will lead the position this year. Both Lauren Young and Jordana Price saw action on the court last season and newcomer Abby Niekamp got her feet wet playing in the spring season. BARRY ON LEADING HER POSITION As middles, we ve improved a lot from spring into summer and now coming into the fall. I feel that I am taking on the leader role with the middle blockers because I ve been here the longest. Lauren Young didn t play much her freshman year because of injury, Jordana came in last year and Abby is new, so I m excited to take on the responsibility of leading them. MOON ON THE MIDDLE BLOCKERS I m really excited to see Jordana, who is amazing off of one foot, on the right side since we lost Mira to a redshirt. I look forward to seeing her attack from back there and then Lauren Young is also a great blocker, so I m eager to play defense behind them. Nikki Baker SETTERS... Junior Nikki Baker is once again the lone veteran at the setter position in 2008 Baker started 19 matches as a sophomore and averaged assists per game With the departure of sophomore Lauren Rosenthal, junior Nikki Baker will control the setter position in Baker showed improvement last season as she averaged assists per game and contributed 28 kills for the Seminoles. MOON ON BAKER Baker loves being it. She s going to love being the only setter on the team. Of course we worry about her staying healthy this season, but from a mental standpoint she is going to be just ine. She loves knowing that she has to perform, but at the same time she knows she has a big task in front of her and that she may have an off day. 9 2008 OUTLOOK Lauren Richardson MOON ON THE OUTSIDE HITTERS I believe Lauren Richardson will take on a leadership role not only in the outside hitter position, but for the whole team both on and off the court. She s got great ball control all the way around and she stepped up and played all around in the spring and did a great job. Stephanie Neville also has a year of experience and if there is a hitter that can get around her, then they must be pretty amazing. BARRY ON THE OUTSIDE HITTERS With Stephanie and Lauren having experience, I think they re going to be the two to look out for this season. With the addition of Rachael and Alliya, both very tall girls, we re going to have a pretty tall front row and I m excited to get to work with the outsides and the right sides to set up bigger blocks. DEFENSIVE SPECIALISTS... Senior Ashlee Moon will lead the defensive specialists this season Sophomores Jenna Romanelli and Taylor Wilson and freshman Drew Dudley all bring collegiate playing experience MOON ON LEADING IN THE DS POSITION... I don t have a problem leading my position or the team. Whatever is needed of me, I m going to do. I m just looking forward to the opportunity. It s good to have Taylor, Jenna and Drew in the defensive specialist position with some experience. I think we de initely improved a lot on our ball control in the spring and I hope that carries over into the fall and we are able to see results from it. BARRY ON THE DEFENSIVE SPECIALISTS I think Ashlee is the one that lights the ire under us. She is going to be the one to help us through the matches, much like Summer [Weissing] was last year. I think the DS position is going to be a giant chunk of our team this year. OUTSIDE HITTERS...
