3 SEASON OUTLOOK We re ready to be relevant again on the national scene. So says third-year USC men s volleyball head coach Bill Ferguson about his 2009 Trojans. It s been a while since the storied USC program has caused a stir on the collegiate landscape. During the 15-year span from 1977 through 1991, the Trojans appeared in 11 NCAA Final Fours, winning 4 NCAA titles and finishing second 6 times and third once. In the 17 seasons since then, USC has never advanced out of its conference tournament. Ferguson feels like a return to the Trojans glory days is just around the corner, perhaps even coming as soon as We now have a roster that expects to compete for conference and national championships, and to win them, he said. We re past our goal from my first 2 years of just getting into the conference tournament. We re ready to take the next step. And if the Trojans performances in the fall of 2008 are any indication, Ferguson might be prescient. USC captured a pair of pre-season tournaments, first winning the Can-Am Challenge by going 4-0 against top Canadian colleges (becoming the first NCAA team to go undefeated in the tourney since 2003) and then claiming the Hawaii Fall Tournament with wins versus Hawaii and BYU. If the fall is indicative of what s to come, we should have a very successful year, he said. We now know how to win a tournament and string together wins. In Canada and Hawaii, we faced everything from blowing out inferior opponents to battling toothand-nail in order to win a match to bouncing back from a difficult loss. USC sandwiches two more trips to the Hawaiian Islands around its always-challenging Mountain Pacific Sports Federation schedule, beginning its 2009 regular season at the Outrigger Hotels Invitational in Honolulu (opening against defending NCAA champ Penn State) and then concluding league play with a pair of matches in the Warriors home arena. Progress has been steady at USC under Ferguson. In his first season in 2007, he guided the Trojans to their most overall (12) and MPSF (9) wins, their highest MPSF finish (eighth) and their first MPSF tourney appearance since As a point of reference, in the previous 5 seasons before Ferguson s arrival, USC had won a combined total of 36 matches and finished no better than 11 th in the MPSF. USC improved again in 2008 by going overall and in the MPSF for another eighth place finish and conference tourney berth (its first back-to-back appearances since a 3-year streak from 1999 to 2001). There were some historic wins along the way. In 2007, USC won at UCLA for the first time since 2000 (the 3-game sweep was its first over the Bruins since 1991) and also snapped a 12-match losing streak to Hawaii (doing so in Honolulu, its first win there since 1999). Last year, the Trojans won both UCLA matches, the first time USC defeated the Bruins twice in a row since 1991 and the first time since 1990 that USC recorded consecutive wins at Pauley Pavilion. And USC had a 5-game victory at 2008 NCAA finalist Pepperdine (USC s first victory in Malibu since 1999, snapping a 9-match losing streak there). Several cornerstones from last year s squad outside hitter Juan Figueroa, setter Jimmy Killian and middle blocker Andrew Vernon, each a 4-year starter have graduated. Respectively, they own the USC rally scoring era career records for kills (1,627), assists (4,820) and blocks (362). Figueroa was a 2-time All-American second teamer, Killian was a 3-time USC PAGE 1 Hunter Current captain and Vernon hit.399 in his career. Murphy Troy But Ferguson feels confident in his 2009 Trojans, despite their youth. Seventeen of the 23 players are underclassmen (including 9 freshmen), and there are only 3 seniors. We have a great mix of what I call young veterans, he said. We have an experienced sophomore class and a competitive group of newcomers. I feel like we ve turned the corner to fielding a team that is selfmotivated and mature beyond its age. Headlining the returnees is 6-8 sophomore outside hitter Murphy Troy, who might also play opposite hitter. The 2008 All-American honorable mention pick has been a starter from the moment he stepped on campus and should contend for All- American first team notice this season. He led USC in aces (35), was second in kills (430) and third in digs (144) last year while hitting.287 and adding 65 blocks. He ranked 19 th nationally in points (4.83) and tied for 19 th in aces (0.34) in He also was a key member of the USA Junior National team that won a bronze medal at the 2008 NORCECA Junior Championships. Murphy is the real deal, said Ferguson. Although he s already one of the best players in the nation, he has a tremendous up-side. We ll ride him this year. Another honors candidate is 6-8 junior Hunter Current, a.340 career hitter who likely will start at middle blocker for his third season in Last year, he had 154 kills while hitting.343 and posted a team-best 98 blocks. Hunter is one of the better offensive middles in the league, said Ferguson. He s an experienced performer and is coming off a great fall. Luke Morris, a 6-2 senior, is in line to start at libero for his fourth year. He has 727 career digs, including 259 in 2008 when he tied for 11 th nationally in digs (2.43). Luke is an experienced, instinctive player who passes well, said Ferguson. He has worked really hard and put in a lot of time in the weightroom, which led to him having his best fall showing ever. Vernon s replacement in the middle should be 6-8 sophomore Austin Zahn, who started 17 matches in He hit.390 (tops among USC s regulars), with 85 kills and 60 blocks last season. Austin should be one of the best middle blockers in the country in 2009, said Ferguson. He had one of the best off-seasons of anyone on the team. He was a leader on the court and in the weightroom. Taking over the setting job for Killian will be 6-2 Riley McKibbin, who saw action in 21 matches as the backup in He got his sophomore campaign off to quick start, as he was named the NCAA MVP at the preseason Can-Am Challenge. He has a strong Trojan background, as his uncle and aunt played at USC (and his younger brother has signed with the school in 2010). Riley is one of the best young setters in collegiate volleyball, said Ferguson. He s a pure setter. He s a good floor leader, has outstanding natural instincts and is very competitive. Several players are competing to fill Figueroa s outside hitter spot. And if Troy moves to opposite hitter, both outside jobs would be open. Tony Ciarelli, a 6-6 true freshman whose parents played and coached the game, had an impressive showing in the fall and has an edge to start on the outside. He was a prep All-American second team and All-CIF Division I first team choice at Huntington Beach (Calif.) High last season, then was named MVP of the 2008 Junior Olympics 16-and-Under division and placed second at the FIVB Youth Beach World Championships. Luke Morris

4 SEASON OUTLOOK I m excited about Tony s prospects, said Ferguson. He ll be one of the top freshmen in the country. He has an extremely high volleyball IQ and is one of the most competitive players on our roster. Other outside hitter possibilities each with various amounts of experience include 6-4 sophomore Tyler Stevens, 6-5 soph Tri Bourne and 6-4 senior Matt Pavlovich. Stevens, whose mother is an assistant for the Women of Troy, appears healthy now after being bothered by a back injury the past 2 seasons (he saw brief action in 10 matches in 2008 after transferring from Ohio State). Bourne, who struggled through the fall with a sore back, started the last 8 matches of 2008 at opposite hitter, and could also work at that spot again this year. He had 59 kills, 99 digs and 24 blocks in 16 overall matches last spring. Pavlovich has 15 career starts, including 12 times in 2007 when he had 97 kills, 51 digs and 31 blocks. He has played in 49 matches at USC (he saw time mainly as a serving specialist in 2008). He also could play some at opposite hitter. Tyler appears to be completely healthy now and had a great fall, said Ferguson. He s competing for a starting job. He serves well and plays good defense. He s also a fantastic leader and role model who provides our team with great direction and attitude. Tri might be our most important player because of his versatility and his character. He was limited in the fall because of his sore back, but I m hoping he will gain momentum in the spring. Matt has had some really good moments on the court and is a very competitive player. He just needs to become more consistent. He s good enough to help us at two positions. If Troy remains on the outside, 6-5 sophomore Sean Dennis might start at opposite hitter. He saw action in 8 matches in the first half of the 2008 season, notching 30 kills and 11 digs. Sean started throughout PAGE 2 Austin Zahn our fall season and did a nice job, said Ferguson. He hits with a lot of range and he s a good defender. Plus, he s a real positive player and that rubs off on his teammates. Five other returning players are pushing for playing time. Jon Hackett, a 6-9 junior who is a USC captain along with McKibbin, is an opposite hitter who is also working now at middle blocker. He has appeared in 22 matches in his career. Ian Wright is a promising but untested 6-7 redshirt freshman middle blocker. C.J. Schellenberg started at opposite hitter the last 3 seasons, but the 6-7 senior was hampered throughout this past fall with shoulder and ankle injuries that could limit him this spring. In his career, he has 827 kills, 294 digs, 191 blocks and 57 aces. He was third on the Trojans in kills (198) and aces (19) in 2008, and also had 72 digs and 42 blocks. Then there are redshirt freshmen Brad Keenan, a 6-4 libero who sat out 2008 with a knee injury, and 5-11 setter Vince Altamura, whose siblings played at USC. Jon is invaluable to us in a number of areas, said Ferguson. First, he s a real team leader. And he can contribute effectively at two positions. Ian is one of our hardest workers and boosts the level of competition in practices. He s in the mix for playing time. C.J. is one of our most experienced players, but he really struggled with injuries in the fall. He s working hard to get back into the lineup, but he s got some challenges ahead of him. Brad is very much a possibility at libero, adding valuable competition and depth at the spot. He s one of our most competitive players and we have confidence in him, as he was on the floor during our championship victories in the fall tournaments. Vince is a young, developing player who runs our offense well and is a good competitor. He s fighting to be the backup setter. Riley McKibbin The play of junior college transfer Matt Knutson, a 6-5 junior outside hitter from Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa (Calif.) who also played at Irvine (Calif.) Valley College, has attracted Ferguson s attention and he could battle for action this spring. Matt has been a very pleasant surprise, said Ferguson. He s added great depth to our outside hitter position with his play, and he s a positive force on the team with his attitude and character. Beside Ciarelli, there are 5 true freshmen who are challenging to get into the playing rotation: 6-7 Steven Shandrick, who was a 2008 prep All-American second team and All-CIF Division I first team selection at Santa Margarita High in Rancho Santa Margarita (Calif.) in addition to being a 2-time Junior Olympics All-Tournament team member, could be the first middle off the bench. 6-3 Jeff Carlson might be the backup setter. He earned prep All-American second team and All- CIF Division II first team honors at Corona del Mar (Calif.) High last season and teamed with Ciarelli to win the silver medal at the 2008 FIVB Youth Beach World Championships. 6-5 opposite hitter Tucker Peleuses, a 2008 prep All-American first team and All-CIF Division I first team honoree at Newport Harbor High in Newport Beach (Calif.), is rounding into form after being slowed in the fall with a thumb injury. 6-6 Steven Mochalski, a promising outside hitter, was the Co-MVP of the All-CIF Division I first team and was a prep All- American first teamer at 2008 CIF Division I titlist Mira Costa High in Manhattan Beach (Calif.). His father started on UCLA s 1982 NCAA championship team. 6-1 Clay Knapp, a 2- time All-CIF Division II second teamer at Laguna Beach (Calif.) High, is a developing libero. Shandrick could emerge as one of the top young middle blockers in the MPSF, said Matt Pavlovich Ferguson. He had a great showing in the fall and should be in the playing rotation this season. Jeff was our backup setter throughout the fall and played really well. He s learning the position very quickly. Tucker is one of the strongest players we have, but he s still learning the game. He ll supply quality depth at the opposite hitter position and has a bright future. Mochalski has a great future here, too. He s an incredible server and a good blocker. As he matures, he ll really help us out. Clay has the best natural ability and instincts of any of our liberos. As he gains experience, he ll be a very good player in the MPSF. Two Trojans will redshirt in 2009: 6-4 sophomore middle blocker Jimmy Hirschmann, who is recuperating from shoulder surgery, and 5-10 soph libero Andrew Pizula, who transferred to USC after playing at 2008 junior college state finalist Orange Coast College. There are some changes on Ferguson s coaching staff in Joining third-year assistant Brad Keller, who will serve as the offensive coordinator, will be newcomers Chuck Moore and Rocky Ciarelli. Moore, who also was a Trojan assistant in 1999, has coaching experience on the club and AVP levels. He ll be USC s defensive coordinator. Ciarelli, who will be a volunteer assistant, had a noted 27-year career in the high school ranks, including at Huntington Beach High where won CIF titles with the boys and girls teams and also coached his current Trojan freshman son Tony. We have a really solid staff now, said Ferguson, and they blend perfectly with our players. The ingredients, then, are there for the 2009 USC team to be relevant again.

6 COACHES Third-year head coach Bill Ferguson, one of the game's top young coaches, was promoted to lead the USC men's volleyball program on May 16, In 2008 in his second season at Troy, he led USC to its most overall and league wins since 2001 and its first back-to-back appearances in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation tournament since a 3-year streak from 1999 to USC was overall and for eighth place in the MPSF. His Trojans swept UCLA (ranked fifth and fourth going in)--it was the first time USC defeated the Bruins twice in a row since 1991 and the first time since 1990 that USC recorded consecutive wins at Pauley Pavilion--to give Ferguson a 3-1 coaching mark against UCLA. 25 HISTORY Since volleyball scholarships were first awarded at USC in the school year, the Trojan men s and women s teams have combined to become a dominant force in the sport. The men have captured four national titles and played in 11 Final Fours in the last 32 years, while the women have won six national crowns and played in 10 Final Fours since The men have a winning percentage of.620 in that span ( ), while the women are at.744 ( ) : After the Trojan women won the national title in the fall of 1976, the men made it a USC sweep when they won the NCAA championship in the spring. The Trojans finished 18-1 with a team that included future Olympians Celso Kalache and Dusty Dvorak, and future coach Bob Yoder. This was the year that volleyball scholarships were first awarded at USC : Though the women won their second straight national crown, the men fell short of a second straight title when they were stopped by Long Beach State in the NCAA regionals and finished : Ernie Hix s squad rebounded to reach the Final Four again, where Troy downed Rutgers-Newark but fell to host UCLA in the final. USC began the season with wins in its first eight matches and finished 23-5 overall : The Trojans avenged the previous season s NCAA final loss to UCLA by beating the Bruins in the title game this time. Tim Hovland, Dusty Dvorak and Pat Powers all were named first team All-Americans as the Trojans won their second NCAA crown in four years. Troy was 22-6 overall : For the third straight year and the fourth time in five seasons, the Trojans made an appearance in the NCAA title match. Their bid for a second straight crown fell short, though, when UCLA won in five games, the fifth The Trojans were 21-5 overall in Ernie Hix s last season as coach, winning the California Intercollegiate Volleyball Association title along the way. USC s women won the national title that season : Under new head coach Bob Yoder, himself a former player at Troy, USC reached the Final Four for the fourth straight year. Though the Trojans were stunned by host Penn State in the semifinals, Yoder s first team still finished overall and third in the nation. The Women of Troy, meanwhile, captured a second straight national championship : USC found itself in the unusual position of rebuilding, and for the first time in the decade failed to make the NCAA Tournament, finishing the season The Trojan women were second in the country : USC rebounded from its mediocre 1983 season, winning its first six matches en route to a overall mark. Only a loss in the finals of the NCAA Western Regional kept the Trojans from another Final Four trip : After a two-year hiatus, the Trojans returned to the Final Four and finished second in the nation. First team All-Americans Bill Yardley and Adam Johnson led USC to a 28-9 record and a spot in the NCAA title game, where Troy was stopped by Pepperdine, 15-13, in the match s deciding game : After the Women of Troy finished third nationally, Yoder s squad began its season with a loss at UCLA in the Kilgour Cup, then ran off 27 straight victories, including an unprecedented 20 without a blemish in the CIVA. Only a heartbreaking five-game loss to Pepperdine in the closest NCAA final ever (the fifth and deciding game was 16-14) kept the Trojans from a national title in a 27-2 season. College Player of the Year Adam Johnson led Troy, which was in the Final Four for the seventh time in 10 years : For the third year in a row, USC was the NCAA runner-up, losing in the final to UCLA (no other school in the country had been to the Final Four each of those years). Featuring three-time All-American Adam Johnson and second team All-American Dave Yoder (the coach's brother), USC s 29 victories (29-11) equalled a school season record : After three straight second-place finishes in the NCAA tourney, USC won the national championship (the school s third). The Trojans set a school victory record by going 34-4 and were led by the likes of College Player of the Year Tom Duke, All-American Jen-Kai Liu, College Freshman of the Year Bryan Ivie and third team All-American Chris Martz. The Women of Troy, after a year layoff, advanced into the NCAA tourney : For the first time in five years, USC didn t advance into the NCAA Final Four. The Trojans, overall, finished in a fourth-place tie in the WIVA and lost to Stanford in the NCAA regional qualifying tournament. Although all but one player returned from the 1988 NCAA titlists, injuries to three starters hampered Troy s hopes : Although it lost in the semifinals of the WIVA Tournament, USC was selected to an NCAA tourney berth... and made the most of it. The Trojans, 26-7 overall, won their fourth NCAA title. Under the guidance of firstyear coach Jim McLaughlin, USC s senior-less team was led by College Player of the Year Bryan Ivie, second team All-Americans Dan Greenbaum and Kevin Shepard, and Freshman All-American Jason Perkins. The women also had a new coach, Lisa Love, who led them into the NCAA playoffs : USC spent all year ranked No. 1 nationally and had a schoolrecord 30-match win streak en route to a 34-2 record (tying the Trojan season win mark), but Troy lost in the NCAA final to Long Beach State. USC, the nation s top hitting team, lost only 21 games. Bryan Ivie won College Player of the Year honors again and Dan Greenbaum was a first team All-American. PAGE 23 AN ERA OF EXCELLENCE : For the first time since scholarships were awarded in the sport at USC (1977), the young (no seniors, four frosh/soph starters) Trojans finished with a sub-.500 record (11-13). It was USC s fewest wins since The Women of Troy, however, went 23-8 to advance into the NCAAs : For the second consecutive year, USC didn t advance to the NCAA Final Four (only the second such two-year occurence since scholarships were awarded in the sport at Troy in 1977). But the Trojans were improved, posting an overall mark. Sophomore Jason Mulholland, who set NCAA records for most kills in a match (55) and highest kill average in a season (7.67), was a second team All-American, while Jason Perkins closed out his career with USC s highest all-time hitting percentage (.430). USC s women went 21-9 and were an NCAA tourney team : USC started off 10-0 and ranked No. 2 nationally, but leveled off to finish with a 17-7 NCAA mark (23-8 overall). It was the first time in the school s scholarship-era history that it went three years without a Final Four visit. Jason Mulholland and Chris Underwood were first team All-Americans. The Women of Troy, 22-9 overall, advanced to the NCAA second round : USC with just one senior began the season at 11-5, but won just five of its next 17 matches to finish at overall (11-14 NCAA). USC s women went 22-8 and made it to the NCAA regional finals : For the first time since 1983, USC didn t qualify for a berth in the conference tournament. The Trojans were overall (10-12 NCAA). The Women of Troy were 18-9 and advanced to the NCAA regional semis : Pat Powers the one-time USC All-American, Olympic gold medalist and pro beach star took over as Troy s head coach. He guided the Trojans to an record (12-12 NCAA), but they failed to advance to the conference tourney for the second year in a row. USC s women went 21-9 and made it to the NCAA regional semifinals : In Powers second season, USC finished (11-15 NCAA) but missed out on the MPSF Tournament by one game. In the fall, the Women of Troy made it to the NCAA Pacific Region semifinals and had a record of 23-6, the squad s most wins since : A senior-less USC team came within a victory of advancing to the NCAA Final Four, losing in the MPSF Tourney championship to host and top-ranked BYU. But the Trojans finished strong with wins over No. 7 Hawaii, No. 4 Pepperdine and No. 2 Long Beach State before the BYU loss. USC finished (17-11 NCAA) and ranked No. 7. All-American setter Donald Suxho's 63 aces was a school season record and Brook Billings was the MPSF Freshman of the Year. USC's women went 24-6 in the fall and made the NCAA Sweet Sixteen : For the second straight year, USC was 1 win away from the NCAA Final Four, losing in the MPSF Tourney semis to Pepperdine. Troy went 26-6 overall (No. 4 in final poll) and, for the first time since 1991, won a share of the MPSF Pacific Division title at USC went 14-0 at home, was ranked No. 1 nationally for 2 weeks near season's end, twice beat a No. 1 team (Long Beach State and UCLA, to break a 13-match losing streak to the Bruins). The Women of Troy went 21-9 and got into the NCAA's second round : The Women of Troy went 29-3 and advanced to the NCAA Final Four for the first time since 1985, losing in the semifinals. The Trojan men, with 5 starters returning, then went and qualified for the MPSF tourney with a 10-7 record : USC's women were 25-4 and got to the NCAA regional final. USC's men struggled through their most difficult season, going 6-22 overall (and finished 11th in the MPSF with a 3-19 mark). Troy set school records for most losses, as well as most consecutive overall and MPSF losses (11) : The Women of Troy went 31-1 and captured their fifth national championship, while Turhan Douglas took over the men's program and went just 6-25 (a school record for losses in a season) in his first year : USC's women had a perfect 35-0 season en route to their sixth national title (second consecutive). The Trojan men posted their third straight 6-win season (this time 6-23) while tying school records for most consecutive overall and MPSF losses (11) and setting the consecutive home loss mark (8) : The Women of Troy went 23-6 and advanced to their third consecutive NCAA Final Four, losing in the semis. USC's men, hampered by injuries throughout the year, were : After USC's women forged a record and advanced to the NCAA second round, the Trojan men posted an mark (their best since 2001), including wins over UCLA and Pepperdine to break 6- and 5-year losing streaks to those teams : The USC women went 27-5 and made it to the NCAA third round. The Trojan men, under new head coach Bill Ferguson, had their best season since 2001, going overall and 9-13 in the MPSF for eighth place to qualify for the conference tournament. Along the way, Troy had its first 3- game win over UCLA since 1991 and first win at Hawaii since : The Women of Troy made it to the NCAA Final Four (losing in the semifinal match), finishing at USC's men had their most overall (13) and league (10) wins since 2001, their first repeat MPSF tourney visit since 2001, their first victory at Pepperdine since 1999 and their first consecutive wins over UCLA since 1991 (and first consecutive wins at UCLA since 1990).

26 HISTORY USC S SETTERS AND THE 5-1 SYSTEM USC was one of the earliest proponents of the 5-1 offense in college volleyball. Much of the Trojans success over the years four NCAA crowns, six runners-up placings and a third-place finish can be attributed to the 5-1 offense. The 5-1, which features only one setter handling the entire offensive scheme, has long been recognized internationally as the premier offensive system. With the success of the U.S. men s National Team, which uses the system, all of today s college teams have gravitated to the 5-1. USC began with the system in the early 1970s with Carlos Fonseca at setter ( ). Although three players shared the setting position in 1976 (Gary Fisette, Brent Peterson and Alan Rosehill), the Trojans have had only nine setters since then: Dusty Dvorak ( ), Bill Stetson ( ), Rudy Dvorak ( ), Mike Lauterman ( ), Dan Greenbaum ( ), Ty Price and Aaron Boone in 1992, Price and Steve Loeswick in 1993, Loeswick in , Donald Suxho in , Miles McGann in 2001, and McGann and J.T. Gilmour in The accomplishments of these setters are a testament to the efficiency and effectiveness of the system as employed by USC. During Dusty Dvorak s tenure, the Trojans won two national championships ( ). Under the guidance of coach Ernie Hix, and with the talent and creativity of Dvorak, much of the playset offense and quick transition attack was developed. The USC system combined the quickness of the Japanese and the playset options and back-row attack of the Polish teams (both were Olympic gold medal winners). The USA National Team adopted the system when Dvorak moved there. As the setter, Dvorak led the U.S. to international dominance and an eventual gold medal in the 1984 Olympics. He is still recognized as perhaps the best setter ever produced in the U.S. Bill Stetson set the Trojans to the NCAA Final Four in He proved himself internationally as the setter for West Germany s 1988 national champions. And Stetson was the starting setter for this country s most successful club team, Molten America, guiding his squad to several national championships. Rudy Dvorak, an All-American in 1986, brought USC back to collegiate volleyball prominence with two NCAA runners-up finishes in He has since trained with the U.S. National Team, and played internationally in Italy and professionally on the beach. Mike Lauterman, a walkon surprise, set USC in the 1987 and 1988 NCAA Finals, guiding Troy to its third NCAA title (1988) when he was named to the NCAA All-Tournament team. Dan Greenbaum took over the setting reins in 1989 and helped the Trojans win the 1990 NCAA crown. He was an All- American for the 1991 NCAA runners-up and then was with the U.S. National Team. First-time Trojan Ty Price handled most of the setting duties in 1992, while first-year freshman Steve Loeswick took over for Price in mid-1993 and continued on solely in 1994, 1995 and Donald Suxho of Albania started at setter for 4 years ( ), earning National Player of the Year honors in He was succeeded in 2001 and 2003 by Miles McGann (McGann and J.T. Gilmour handled the duty in 2002). Gilmour (along with Gio Altamura at times) was the 2004 setter. Freshman Jimmy Killian took over in 2005 through 2008 (Gilmour filled in at times in 2005). 27 HISTORY USC IN THE NCAA AND MPSF USC has been one of the most successful teams in college volleyball over the last 32 years. The Trojans won the NCAA title in 1977, 1980, 1988 and 1990, finished second in 1979, 1981, 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1991, and placed third in Four teams are selected each year to compete in the NCAA Championship. A representative is selected from the East, Midwest and West, plus one at-large team. The 12-member men's volleyball version of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation was a merger of the three largest conferences in the Western United States the Pac-10, Big West and Western Athletic along with several independents. The MPSF, formerly the Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Association, was formed in 1993 to pool resources in several nonrevenue sports and yet maintain a high level of competition. Schools play a 22-match MPSF schedule, playing each team twice, with overall records against MPSF teams counting toward selection to the postseason eight-team MPSF Tournament. The teams are seeded, with the tourney winner getting the West Region s automatic NCAA berth. 29 HISTORY USC'S 1949 USVBA CHAMPIONS USC s 1949 men s volleyball team, although not under the jurisdiction of the athletic department, captured the first-ever USVBA Collegiate National Championship. The event was held in Los Angeles that year and the Hans Vogel-coached Trojans beat Stanford in the final, 15-4, Dick Archer and Ray Solari were named All-American first teamers. USC'S 1950 USVBA CHAMPIONS USC followed up its 1949 USVBA Collegiate National Championship with a repeat title in Hans Vogel took his Trojans (still not under the auspices of the athletic department) to the final in Knoxville, Tenn., where they beat the University of Mexico, 13-9, Robbie Duron and Don Patterson made the All-American first team. The team disbanded in PAGE 27

30 HISTORY USC'S 1977 NCAA CHAMPIONS In the year that USC first awarded volleyball scholarships, head coach Ernie Hix's Trojans went 18-1 with a team that featured future Olympians Celso Kalache (Brazil) and Dusty Dvorak (USA) and future USC head coach Bob Yoder. After beating Rutgers Newark in the NCAA semifinal, USC defeated Ohio State in 4 games (15-11, 9-15, 15-10, 15-12) to win its first NCAA Championship. Kalache and Yoder were All-American first team picks, while Dvorak and Steve Obradovich were All-American second teamers. Kalache was the NCAA All-Tournament team MVP. USC'S 1980 NCAA CHAMPIONS The Trojans and head coach Ernie Hix found themselves in their third Final Four in 4 years. USC defeated UCLA in four games (15-7, 6-15, 15-13, 15-8) to win its second NCAA Championship. Troy (22-6), one of the best teams in college volleyball history, featured 3 future Olympic gold medalists (Dusty Dvorak, Steve Timmons and Pat Powers) and a 3-time All-American first teamer (Tim Hovland). Powers went on to coach the Trojans from 1997 to Hovland, Dvorak and Powers were All-American first team selections that year, with Dvorak earning NCAA All-Tournament team MVP honors. PAGE 28

31 HISTORY USC'S 1988 NCAA CHAMPIONS After being down two games to none in the NCAA Championship match, USC head coach Bob Yoder subbed Lawrence Hom into the lineup and Hom sparked one of the greatest comebacks in NCAA history as Troy won the next three games to defeat UC Santa Barbara, 15-17, 14-16, 15-10, 15-11, 15-9, en route to the school s third NCAA Championship (after three straight NCAA Championship runnerup seasons). The Trojans (34-4) were led by All-American first team honors and NCAA All-Tournament team MVP Jen-Kai Liu, All-American first teamer and College Player of the Year Tom Duke and College Freshman of the Year Bryan Ivie. USC'S 1990 NCAA CHAMPIONS The Trojans (26-7), under the guidance of first-year head coach Jim McLaughlin, were in their 10th Final Four in 13 years. Troy s lineup of future Olympians Bryan Ivie, Dan Greenbaum and Nick Becker defeated Long Beach State, 15-10, 12-15, 15-4, 15-6, to win its fourth NCAA Championship. Ivie was honored as an All-American first teamer, College Player of the Year and NCAA All-Tournament team MVP. Greenbaum, Kevin Shepard and Freshman All-American Jason Perkins joined Ivie on the NCAA All-Tournament team. USC'S NCAA FINAL FOUR APPEARANCES PAGE 29
