College is nearing their national championships and indoor club is almost finished with qualifiers. There haven t been very many nice days without rain or wind to get outside but those sunny beautiful days are coming. The 2017 summer has the most opportunities for junior beach volleyball in the Great Lakes Region than ever before. You can find tournaments that qualify you for USA, AAU, Rox, AVP, EVP and a new national tour ABT. The selection is endless. Pick and choose your dates based on when and where you want to play. Remember any sand tournament provides volleyball, friends, sand and sun, so have fun!! The following pages will give you a list of area tournaments, clinics, camps and highlighted questions often asked. This newsletter will be updated and continue once a month through the summer. 5 Questions and Answers Q: What is the USA Junior Beach Tour? A: This is the beach equivalent to the USAV Junior Nationals. The USA JBT host qualifying events all summer across the nation. If you finish in the top 3 or 4 of a Bid event you will qualify for a bid into the national tournament. Trickle down bids are also awarded. This year s national event is held July in Siesta Keys, FL. Q: Do I need to be an USAV or AAU member? A: Yes for the most part. Most all junior beach tournaments are affiliated with either USAV or AAU. To play in their events you will need a membership. If you don t have one both offer summertime membership at a reduced rate. If you were a member for indoor you do not need to register again. Q: What are some difference between beach volleyballs and indoor volleyballs? A: While beach and indoor volleyballs both weigh between 9 to 10 ounces, and are made of similar materials, there are a few things that distinguish them from one another. Beach volleyballs are generally more durable, and built to hold up to the outdoor elements. Beach volleyballs have a more textured, non-moisture-absorbent surface for easier handling in the outdoors. Beach volleyballs are generally more colorful for better visibility against the sun, and are less pressurized than indoor volleyballs Q: What are the health benefits of playing beach volleyball? A: Any activity that gets you moving, particularly if it's fun, can make a huge difference in your health and fitness, mental outlook, and overall quality of life. Add to that lots of sunshine and fresh air, what's not to like about beach volleyball? Other than a possible overexposure to sun and heat, beach volleyball could quite possibly be the perfect warm-weather pastime. And since beach volleyball is played on sand, it's much gentler on the body than other hard-surface sports. Q: What s the best sun protection? A: Your best defense against the UV rays is a good sunscreen with a SPF of 30 or more, and protective sports sunglasses. You may also consider wearing a sports cap or visor, and protective clothing if necessary. Sand shoes could be your best friend on days when the sun is scorching hot. What are the Coaching Rules? Coaches must be certified USAV members. Coaches may participate in warm up drill only prior to eh official 10 min warm up. During play coaches may observe from the player area Instruction may only take place during timeouts, between sets and (nondisruptively) during side changes Coaches may suggest a time out to their team captain. Coaches may not influence or question the officials judgment at any time No more than 2 coaches allowed per team. 5

6 Questions and Answers Q: What is Collegiate Beach Volleyball A: The NCAA took on the new sport after the AVCA nurtured it from infancy. Many schools have programs with developing budgets and have very limited scholarship opportunities, but some schools are pulling away from the competition by getting top recruits who have been able to specialize in beach volleyball. The AVCA ranks the top 10 schools during the Spring season. Schools have limited practice during the Fall, and have full schedules in March and May, with duals, tournaments, and perhaps Conference Championships and National Championships in early May. Q: How Do I play beach volleyball in college? A: There are athletics scholarships being awarded to athletes at schools across the country, and most of those players on scholarship took the initiative and contacted the coach of that school, usually with video footage to get their attention. Many athletes played beach volleyball through USAV and it's prestigious High Performance (HP) program. It is becoming more common for athletes on scholarship to specialize in beach volleyball at some point in high school, rather than playing both indoor and beach (however, a large amount play both). The majority of collegiate beach volleyball athletes are not on scholarship, and it is important to be realistic when pursuing your dreams Q: Can an athlete play both indoor and beach in the same year for a college? A: Yes, but scholarships are tricky in this situation. At present, players on an indoor scholarship can play indoor and beach volleyball at the same time, but players that receive beach scholarships CANNOT play on the indoor team due to. Many schools are using their indoor squads to fill out their emerging beach teams, so players are transferring their indoor experience to the beach game. If you want to play both, you need an indoor scholarship. (If there is no scholarship involved, players can play on both teams without conflict). Q: Why are there defender and blocker positions? A: Although beach volleyball players must be well-rounded, there is still some specialization. One partner will usually be the designated blocker because they are more imposing at the net, while the defender is quick and agile, ready to dig anything that comes past the blocker. That said, the chemistry between every team is different and some teams choose to "split-block", which means they switch defensive roles depending upon the situation. This usually requires two players of medium height, and can be successful in the right scenario professionally. 7 About the USAV Junior Beach Tour (USA JBT) Mission The mission of the USAV Junior Beach Tour is to be the premier junior beach tour in the United States. Tour Locations The tour has more than 60 events this year in 24 states and 26 USAV regions. Age Divisions The USAV Junior Beach Tour offers tournaments to boys and girls ages 10 to 18. The age divisions are 12-and-Under, 14U, 16U and 18U in Open and Club categories. Tournament Specifics Tournaments are 1-2 days with pool play and playoffs. Pools consist of 4-5 teams. Players referee the opponents matches. Tournaments normally begin at 8 a.m. and check-in begins at 7 a.m., local time. Some locations may have space limitations and/or weather restrictions so starting times may differ. Please check the individual event for times. About the American Beach Volleyball Tour (ABT) This USAV sanctioned tour is produced by the Regional Volleyball Associations (RVA's) in the USA. Our goal is to offer regional beach events for junior and adult USAV members, culminating with a tour championship event each year. Each RVA will be responsible to schedule and sanction their respective events to create a comprehensive tour schedule for participating teams. All events are sanctioned by the respective RVA where the competition takes place and they offer the best insurance and safeguard protections available in the US. Championship divisions for juniors include: HP, Open, & Club. Championship divisions for adults include: Open, AA, A, & BB Coaching is allowed under specified guidelines. Each coach needs to be a USAV member, background-checked and Indoor or Beach Impact Certified. The Molten Elite Beach Volleyball BV5000 will be used for all events. Team Specifics The teams are comprised of two male or female players, no coed teams are allowed. Each player receives a T-shirt. Uniforms are not required. The top three finishers per division per gender receive a medal. Bids and Points Players will have the opportunity to earn bids (invitations) to the USAV Junior Beach Tour National Championships. Open events give three bids per division per gender. Grand slam events give five bids per division per gender. Club divisions do not offer bids. The USAV Beach Junior Rankings System allows participants to earn an increased number of ranking points at USAV Junior Beach Tour events. 7
