3 Laguna Niguel Senior Games Pickle Ball Tournament Saturday, March 10, 2018 Crown Valley Elementary School Pickle Ball Courts, 9:00am-2:00pm Approximate Timeline 8:00am Staff arrives 9:00am Morning Session Begins Women s Doubles 3.0 to 3.5 Men s Doubles 3.0 to :00pm Afternoon Session Begins Women s Doubles 4.0 and above Men s Doubles 4.0 and above 2:00pm Tournament Complete, award presentations Participants Expected maximum registration will be up to 64 players. Timeline and bracket may be adjusted to accommodate a smaller registration. Tournament will be open to both men and women to play on two person teams. General Rules The tournament will be composed of two-person teams. Each team will play 7 matches, each to 11 points. Match scores tracking explained by tournament director. Total points determine awards for Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals in all 4 categories after completion of matches.

4 Teams A team on the court has 4 players maximum (2 stationed at each end of the court) with each player throwing 2 balls. Players are not allowed to switch ends during a game. A team without all players present at the scheduled game start time forfeits the game with zero points and the opponent is awarded 11 points. Game Play The Serve The serve must be made underhand. Paddle contact with the ball must be below the server s waist (navel level). The serve is initiated with at least one foot behind the baseline; neither foot may contact the baseline or court until after the ball is struck. The serve is made diagonally crosscourt and must land within the confines of the opposite diagonal court. Only one serve attempt is allowed, except in the event of a let (the ball touches the net on the serve and lands on the proper service court; let serves are replayed). Service Sequence Both players on the serving doubles team have the opportunity to serve and score points until they commit a fault *(except for the first service sequence of each new game). The first serve of each side-out is made from the right-hand court. If a point is scored, the server switches sides and the server initiates the next serve from the left-hand court. As subsequent points are scored, the server continues switching back and forth until a fault is committed and the first server loses the serve. When the first server loses the serve the partner then serves from their correct side of the court (except for the first service sequence of the game*). The second server continues serving until his team commits a fault and loses the serve to the opposing team. Once the service goes to the opposition (at side out), the first serve is from the right-hand court and both players on that team have the opportunity to serve and score points until their team commits two faults. In singles the server serves from the right-hand court when his or her score is even and from the left when the score is odd. *At the beginning of each new game only one partner on the serving team has the opportunity to serve before faulting, after which the service passes to the receiving team.

5 Double-Bounce Rule When the ball is served, the receiving team must let it bounce before returning, and then the serving team must let it bounce before returning, thus two bounces. After the ball has bounced once in each team s court, both teams may either volley the ball (hit the ball before it bounces) or play it off a bounce (ground stroke). Non-Volley Zone The non-volley zone is the court area within 7 feet on both sides of the net. Volleying is prohibited within the non-volley zone. This rule prevents players from executing smashes from a position within the zone. It is a fault if, when volleying a ball, the player steps on the non-volley zone, including the line and/or when the player s momentum causes them or anything they are wearing or carrying to touch the non-volley zone including the associated lines. It is a fault if, after volleying, a player is carried by momentum into or touches the non -volley zone, even if the volleyed ball is declared dead before this happens. A player may legally be in the non-volley zone any time other than when volleying a ball. Line Calls A ball contacting any line, except the non-volley zone line on a serve, is considered in. A serve contacting the non-volley zone line is short and a fault. Faults A fault is any action that stops play because of a rule violation. A fault by the receiving team results in a point for the serving team. A fault by the serving team results in the server s loss of serve or side out. A fault occurs when: * A serve does not land within the confines of the receiving court * The ball is hit into the net on the serve or any return * The ball is volleyed before a bounce has occurred on each side * The ball is hit out of bounds * A ball is volleyed from the non-volley zone * A ball bounces twice before being struck by the receiver * A player, player s clothing, or any part of a player s paddle touches the net or the net post when the ball is in play * There is a violation of a service rule * A ball in play strikes a player or anything the player is wearing or carrying * A ball in play strikes any permanent object before bouncing on the court

6 Determining Serving Team Players use a coin toss to determine who will serve first. The winner of the coin toss will have the option to choose side or to serve or receive. Referees/Tournament Director The referee has the final word in disputes. The official referee has the option to eject a player for continued rule violations, arguing, or disrupting play which would result in game loss for that player s team.

Failure to make the shot called will result in an end of turn, however any sunk balls remain in the pockets. If the shot called is made, that player continues their turn. Any scratch results in the opponent having a ball in hand shot from behind the head string. An automatic loss will result if the 8 ball is sunk in any other pocket than the one called, or if there is a scratch while trying to sink the 8 ball. Combination shots may be hit, as long as the shot is called, however, a striped ball can not be hit into a solid, or vice versa.

20 Laguna Niguel Senior Games Bocce Ball Tournament Sunday, March 11, 2018 Marina Hills Park Bocce Ball Courts, 8:00am-2:00pm Approximate Timeline 7:00am Staff arrives 8:00am Welcome participants, Registration begins 8:30am Team Drawing 8:45am Tournament Play Begins 2:00pm Tournament Complete, award presentations Participants Expected maximum registration will be up to 24 players. Timeline and bracket may be adjusted to accommodate a smaller registration. Tournament will be open to both men and women to play together in an 6 team round robin format. Teams will consist of four persons. General Rules The tournament will be composed of six four-person teams. Each team would play the other 5 teams with games being to 11 points. The first team to score 11 points will be the victor. The tournament champion will be decided by the team that has the most wins and points scored. Medals will be awarded to the top 3 teams.

21 Teams A team on the court has 4 players maximum (2 stationed at each end of the court) with each player throwing 2 balls. Players are not allowed to switch ends during a game. A team without all players present at the scheduled game start time forfeits the game with zero points and the opponent is awarded 11 points. Game Play Begin the match with the flip of a coin between the captains of each team. The winner of the coin flip has the first toss of the pallino and chooses the color of the team's balls. The pallino is the first ball put into play and is thrown underhand from behind the pointing foul line. The pallino may be bounced off the sideboards. The pallino must end up across the center line and at least 12 inches away from the sideboards or backboard without hitting the backboard. If a thrower fails to do this, the throw goes to other team. If the second throw fails to place the pallino into play, the pallino is placed approximately in the center of the hitting foul line at the opposite end of the court in order to speed up play. If a player throws pallino and/or first ball when other team should throw the pallino, the balls are returned and the frame starts over. Once pallino is in play, the pallino can be knocked anywhere on the court except back over the center line or out of the court. The initial pallino thrower always throws the first bocce ball. All balls are thrown underhand. If the first ball hits the backboard without hitting the pallino first, the ball is removed and the team throws again until they have a ball in play. Each succeeding ball is thrown by the team that does NOT have the ball closest to the pallino. Balls may be bounced off or played against sideboards. A ball hitting the backboard without first touching the pallino or another bocce ball is a dead ball and is removed from play. If a player throws wrong color ball, it is replaced with a correct color ball after the ball comes to rest.

22 If a player throws when the other team should throw or throws more than 2 balls, that ball is removed from play If a player throws when other team should throw because of a miscall by the Referee, the ball is returned and the correct player throws. The person(s) doing the measuring must press and rotate balls and the pallino before measuring to mark their original position on the court surface. If a ball or pallino is accidentally moved while measuring, it is replaced to its original marked position. A bocce ball, for whatever reason, that goes out of the court is a dead ball and is removed from play for that frame. Volo shooting (lofting the ball in the air beyond the center line of the court) is not permitted. The official score for frame is determined after all 8 balls have been played and measured to the captains' satisfaction. One point is awarded for each ball of a team that is closer to the pallino than the opponent s closest ball. The team that scores in the last frame throws the pallino in the next frame and play continues as above. If each team s closest balls are tied, no score is made and play continues at the opposite end with the team scoring the point(s) in the previous frame delivering the pallino. The team that first scores 11 points wins the game. Referees/Tournament Director All IN determinations and measurements are made by the Referee. (Measurements may be made with any device that reliably and repeatedly indicates the difference between the measurements.) The referee determines the points for each frame and reports the point score to scorekeepers. The referee shall not give advice to either team or coach players as to where to direct their throw. The referee has the final word in disputes. The official referee has the option to eject a player for continued rule violations, arguing, or disrupting play which would result in game loss for that player s team.

At the end of each game, scores need to be recorded on score sheets with names of players and final score. Sheets will be collected at the end of each match. Flow of the Match First serve will be determined by coin toss. Each player serves two points in a row and then switch server. However, if a score of is reached in any game, then each server serves only one point and then the server is switched. After each game, the players switch sides of the table. Legal Serve The ball must rest on an open hand palm. Then it must be tossed up at least 6 inches and struck so the ball first bounces on the server s side and then the opponent s side.
