5 2009 SWATCH FIVB World TourMen s & Women s Highlights & Schedule Highlighted by the SWATCH FIVB World Championships and four Grand Slam events, the 2009 SWATCH FIVB World Tour calendar began in April and concludes in November. Here are 2009 SWATCH SWATCH FIVB World Tour highlights. The total prize money for 2009 is US$7.39-million. The calendar features 19 sites in 15 countries within three FIVB confederations (Asia, Europe and South America). The 2009 calendar includes 12 double gender events. Italy (Rome and Roseto degli Abruzzi) and, Poland (Myslowice) have hosted or wil stage men s only events. Japan (Osaka), Korea (Seoul), Spain (Barcelona) and Thailand (Phuket) have hosted or will stage women s only events. The 2009 SWATCH FIVB World Championships were held June 25-July 5 in Stavanger, Norway. It marked the fifth-time that a European country has hosted the event. The 2009 calendar includes four SWATCH-FIVB World Tour Grand Slam events with total prize money of $2.4-million. The Swiss Alps village of Gstaad, which hosted the 2007 SWATCH FIVB World Championships, was the first Grand Slam event followed by stops in Moscow, Marseille and Klagenfurt. The 2009 SWATCH FIVB World Tour calendar lists three new sites, including Brasília (Brazil), Rome (Italy) and The Hague (Netherlands). The Finnish event in Aland returns to the 2009 SWATCH FIVB World Tour calendar after not being held in 2008 due to the Beijing Olympic Games. 7 2008 SWATCH FIVB World Tour Highlights & Results Highlighted by the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and six Grand Slam events, the 2008 SWATCH FIVB World Tour calendar began in March and concluded in November with total prize money of US$8,325-million. The calendar featured 25 sites in 19 countries in three FIVB confederations (Asia, Europe and South America). The 2008 calendar featured 16 double gender events, including the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. With the addition of an event in Moscow, the 2008 calendar contained six SWATCH FIVB World Tour Grand Slam events with total prize money of $3.6-million. Other Grand Slams were staged in Berlin, Paris, Stavanger, Gstaad and Klagenfurt. A total of US$8.615-million in prize money was available in 2008 as the FIVB sanctioned 12 Challenger/Satellite events. Overall, the 2008 campaign featured 53 combined tournaments for men and women, including the Olympics, 39 major events and12 FIVB Chalenger/Satelite events. In addition, the FIVB sanctioned the youth and junior world championships for men and women in Netherlands and Great Britain, respectively. The 57 events attracted competitors from 67 countries from all five FIVB confederations as the total participation number featured 1,287 players, including 730 men and 557 women. Leading the way was the SWATCH FIVB World Tour where 911 competitors from 59 countries vied for a record $ milion in prize money at 20 men s and 19 women s events. The FIVB sanctioned six men s and six women s Chalenger/Satelite stops where 424 players from 41 countries competed for $290,000 in prize money. The youth and junior events in The Hague and Brighton attracted 265 players from 31 countries.
