Mr. Jizhong Wei, FIVB President T he year 009 marked the 0th edition of the World League, a milestone that called for an equally impressive quality of play and world-class venues at which to host the premier men s tournament. We got that and much more. From the opening matches to Brazil s eventual triumph in the final in Belgrade, we were treated to some of the finest Volleyball matches ever played in some of the most accommodating and best-prepared locations around the globe. We also saw the fascinating interplay between veterans and young guns as the teams experimented with their lineups at the beginning of the new Olympic cycle. As I presented Brazilian superstar Giba with the World League trophy following his team s impressive victory over runner-up Serbia, I recalled a number of other great triumphs he has savored over the years. But after greeting some of the fresh faces on the gold-medal squad, I was also reminded of all the great young talent the future stars of our sport that emerged at the tournament. Who will forget Cuba s then 15-yearold sensation Wilfredo Leon Venero scoring 18 points in his World League debut before going on to finish third in scoring at the tournament, for example? It is true we expected a lot of the 0th anniversary year of the World League. But I am extremely pleased to say my expectations were surpassed in almost every aspect of the competition. May the next 0 years be equally as successful or more so! Mr. Jizhong Wei, FIVB President World League champions Brazil The team wouldn t have to wait long. After crushing all comers in the preliminary round, winning 11 of 1 matches, the mighty Brazilians then went 4-0 in the Final Round in Belgrade from July -6 to win their eighth World League title in the competition s 0 years of existence. It wasn t a complete cakewalk for the team in yellow, however. 4 Beach Volleyball MEN & women Germans make history in busy month following Worlds It s been a busy month for Beach Volleyball players following the SWATCH FIVB World Championships in Norway that ended on July 4. The teams got right back at it from July 6-1 in Gstaad, Switzerland at the 1 to 1 energy Grand Slam, and followed that up with tournaments in Russia, France, Austria and Poland. World Volley News GSTAAD In Gstaad, Julius Brink and Jonas Reckermann became the first team from Germany to win back-to-back SWATCH FIVB World Tour events when they defeated legendary Brazilians Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos for the gold medal. The 1-15, 17-1, win in 60 minutes over third-seeded Rego and Santos validated Brink and Reckermann s gold medal success at the 009 SWATCH FIVB World Championships in Stavanger, where the Germans claimed their first-ever SWATCH FIVB World Tour title together. The wins helped the Germans climb to No. 1 in the world rankings. On the women s side, Brazil s Talita Antunes and Maria Antonelli scored a 1-17, 16-1, 15-1 win in 58 minutes over thirdseeded Brazilian rivals Juliana Felisberta Silva and Larissa Franca to capture their third international gold medal. The vic- Brazilian Emanuel Rego (left) gets in the face of Spain s Pablo Herrera at the Grand Slam in Gstaad tory snapped a personal five-game losing streak to their Brazilian rivals, as Antunes and Antonelli had dropped three SWATCH FIVB World Tour matches and two domestic-circuit meetings to Silva and Franca. MOSCOW Brink and Reckermann continued their impressive run of form in Russia s capital from July 14-19, putting their names in the men s SWATCH FIVB World Tour record book by winning their third-straight international Beach Volleyball gold medal. They tied the mark for most consecutive match wins by once again defeating Rego and Santos (4-6, 1-18,16-14) in the finals of the US$600,000 Grand Slam Moscow 009 presented by SEAT. Silva and Franca made up for their loss in the Gstaad final by beating compatriots Renata Ribeiro and Vanilda Leao 1-18, 1-19 for gold in Moscow. Silva and Franca maintained their perfect record in Russia, having won all four tournaments they ve played in the country, including the 005, 006 and 007 titles won in St. Petersburg. Germany s Sara Goller watches partner Laura Ludwig bump the Mikasa in Marseille MARSEILLE From July 0-6, the SWATCH FIVB World Tour settled down in France, where the single-elimination format suited two pairs from the United States very well indeed. Reigning Olympic champions Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers duplicated the efforts of compatriots Jen Kessy and April Ross in capturing the men s and women s gold medals at the US$600,000 World Series 1 Grand Chelem. Kessy and Ross defeated Vassiliki Arvaniti and Maria Tsiartsiani of Greece 1-16, 1-17 in the 4-minute women s finale on the Plages Gaston Defferre centre court, before fourth-seeded Dalhausser July Women s Grand Slam Gstaad, Switzerland - Podium Finish 1 Talita / Antonelli BRA Larissa / Juliana BRA Branagh / Youngs USA July Men s Grand Slam Gstaad, Switzerland - Podium Finish 1 Brink / Reckermann GER Ricardo / Emanuel BRA Herrera / Gavira ESP July Women s Grand Slam Moscow, Russia - Podium Finish 1 Larissa / Juliana BRA Renata / Leão BRA Goller / Ludwig GER July Men s Grand Slam Moscow, Russia - Podium Finish 1 Brink / Reckermann GER Ricardo / Emanuel BRA Laciga M. / Bellaguarda SUI 4 FIVB World Volley News No. 4 August 009

5 Becchara Palmer of Australia won the Most Outstanding Player award in Stare Jablonki and Rogers captured their first SWATCH FIVB World Tour gold medal this season by defeating seventh-seeded Adrian Gavira Collado and Pablo Herrera of Spain 1-8, 1-14 in 5 minutes. Todd has been telling me that the singleelimination format is very good, said the 9-year old Dalhausser, who was named the SWATCH most outstanding player for the World Series 1 Grand Chelem. I think the format gives you a chance to focus on the matches more and eliminate concerns about who you might play if you lose like in a double-elimination format. KLAGENFURT Dalhausser and Rogers were at it again the following week in Austria, winning the gold medal at the US$600,000 A1 Beach Volleyball Grand Slam presented by Volksbank. The thirdseeded Dalhausser and Rogers scored a 1-19, 1-1, 15-1 win in 64 minutes over second-seeded Alison Cerutti and Beach Volleyball Harley Marques of Brazil to share the $4,500 first-place prize. On the women s side, the third time was the charm for Juliana Felisberta Silva and Larissa Franca as the Brazilians captured their first gold medal in three attempts in Austria to win the women s title. The silver medal winners at the 006 and 007 A1 Beach Volleyball Grand Slam, Juliana and Larissa scored a 1-1, 1-15 win in 9 minutes over fourth-seeded Nicole Branagh and Elaine Youngs of the United States. STARE JABLONKI In Poland, Benjamin Insfran and Pedro Salgado completed a Brazilian sweep of the Beach Volleyball gold medals by winning the men s finale at the US$80,000 Mazury Open as each player claimed their 10th SWATCH FIVB World Tour title, but their first championship crown together. Silva and Franca started the Brazilian success with a 1-14, 1-16 gold medal win in 8 minutes over Louise Bawden and Becchara Palmer of Australia. Benjamin and Salgado finished the Mazury Open trophy chase with a -1, 1-16 gold medal victory in 55 minutes over Julius Brink and Jonas Reckermann of Germany.
