Welcome and Grüezi mitenand In less than 200 days, the starting whistles for the first preliminary matches of the 2013 European Championship Women will be blown in Zurich, Dresden, Halle/Westphalia and Schwerin. While players, coaches and team staff are still busy with their respective club teams, behind the scenes people have been working tirelessly for over a year to make sure that volleyball will have the best possible stage at the most important European team sport event of the year. In September, volleyball will be given an extraordinary platform in Switzerland and Germany to present itself in its very best light. For nine days, we will benefit from great public attention and thus have the chance to get a large audience and of course also the media enthusiastic about our wonderful sport. We definitely want to seize this opportunity! The best way to drum up enthusiasm is, of course, with good results, i.e. victories of the home teams. However, enthusiasm can also be boosted by offering the fans and media a great event besides these high-class athletic performances. Volleyball should be fun, volleyball should be a great experience! The national cup finals in Halle/Westphalia and Bern are excellent examples of how volleyball can be presented in an attractive manner. Therefore, not only our national teams but also we from the organising committee are called upon to give our very best. However, the European Championship should also leave its marks on Swiss and German volleyball beyond this September. It is therefore of great importance to us to be able to get tomorrow s volleyball players fascinated with this sport. Particularly for children and adolescents it is an unforgettable experience to be able to see the star players live and from close up. There is no limit to the euphoria with which they often emulate their great idols at home and in their club afterwards. To whet your appetite, we are providing you with plenty of interesting facts on the women s Euro 2013 in this newsletter. This time, our focus is on the venue of Zurich, where the preliminary matches of Pool B and two playoffs as well as two quarterfinals will be hosted. You can find more interesting information on the official EC homepage at and on Facebook at Enthusiastically, Hubert Martens & Stav Jacobi (VONOC Executive Vice Presidents Germany and Switzerland) Hubert Martens (left) and Stav Jacobi hope for a lasting effect of the Euro 2013 in Germany and Switzerland. 3 Zurich: A golden opportunity for Swiss volleyball Financial and sports capital Zurich will host the preliminaries of Pool B as well as two playoffs and quarterfinals (Photograph: Zürich Tourismus). By René Hauri (Tages-Anzeiger, Zurich) Until very recently, Zurich was inconceivable as a venue for a European volleyball championship. In autumn, however, many a Swiss female player s dream will come true. They have prepared for nothing other than this highlight of their career for the last three years. In the legendary Hallenstadion stadium they will make history. A women s European volleyball championship in Switzerland? Up until quite recently 2010, to be more precise such a scenario was utterly unthinkable. There was no competitive national team to speak of. The second and last time Switzerland participated in a European championship was 39 years ago. Swiss women s teams have never competed in World Championships or Olympic Games. There were hardly any professional Swiss female players. At least not in indoor volleyball. Beach volleyball offered a more profitable alternative. But then, three years ago in June, the national association and the wealthy league side Volero Zürich together launched a base project. During the season, the athletes play in their clubs and during the three summer months, the team is being trained under the direction of the Zurich club, preparing for their great goal the European Championship in Germany and Switzerland in autumn this year (6 through 14 September). For most Swiss female volleyball players, this will quite simply be the peak of their career. The Hallenstadion stadium located at the city border of Zurich will be the venue for this major event. It was built in 1939 and is one of the largest multi-purpose halls in Europe. It hosts the local ice hockey team, the ZSC Lions, the Zurich Open tennis tournament as well as the legendary Six-Day Race in track cycling, and numerous international music stars perform there every year. The Swiss team will play its preliminary matches at this historic site. Additionally, there are two playoffs and two quarterfinals scheduled here. In 2007, another volleyball event took place in the Hallenstadion: the Champions League Final Four with Volero Zürich as its host. 3,000 spectators went to see the games every day. For the EC, 20,000 fans are expected over the five days of the event, thus providing a setting no Swiss volleyball player is used to. The national team had a foretaste of what is to come during their first participation in the European League last summer, where they were also able to play before a home crowd in Fribourg and managed to achieve a remarkable result against Turkey with 2:3, although they did not score any other points thereafter. The European League was one piece of a jigsaw on the long and difficult road towards the Euro For this highlight, the Swiss women have put everything aside in favour of their sport during the last three years. Now they intend to reap the rewards for their hard work if not in the form of victories, then at least with a successful and probably unique volleyball festival in their home country. René Hauri is sports editor and volleyball expert for the Tages-Anzeiger in Zurich and is going to report for the newspaper during the Euro 2013 as well. (Photograph: zvg)
Zurich: A golden opportunity for Swiss volleyball Infobox Zurich & Hallenstadion Zurich is Switzerland s largest city with almost 400,000 inhabitants and at the same time its financial and economic metropolis. The Hallenstadion is the largest unsupported hall in Europe and renowned well beyond the country s borders as a venue for major sporting events and concerts of international top stars. This listed building was inaugurated in 1939 and has been Switzerland s most modern event hall since its comprehensive renovation in 2004/2005. During the EC, the Hallenstadion will be the arena for the preliminary round of Pool B as well as for two playoffs and two quarterfinals. The Swiss national team will play all its preliminary matches here and, should they qualify, also the playoff and quarterfinal. The listed Hallenstadion is Switzerland s most modern event arena. (Photograph: picture library of the AG Hallenstadion) Top 5 tips for Zurich and its environs 2) Hallenstadion The Hallenstadion is almost like a second home to me. I cannot remember how many times I have skated across the ice here. At the beginning of February, I performed in the Art on Ice show for the eleventh time already. This show is always a highlight and very special for me because there are many friends and acquaintances among the audience. What I particularly appreciate about the Hallenstadion is the fact that the temperatures are quite comfortable compared to the usual, chilly ice rinks. 3) Starbucks und Co. I am a true coffeeholic. I feel at home wherever they serve good coffee or even better yummy cappuccino. That is why you will often find me in one of the great coffee places in the historic centre of Zurich or in one of the Starbucks cafés. Sarah Meier, 2011 European figure skating champion, lives in Zurich and has participated in countless shows and competitions in the Hallenstadion. (Photograph: Art on Ice Production AG) In each newsletter, a celebrity from the city or region will present his or her Top 5 tips. Where do I need to go, what places should I visit? Sarah Meier, 2011 European figure skating champion, presents her favourites for Zurich. 1) Downtown Zurich There is always something happening in Zurich, so it is very convenient for me to live right in the city centre since I love to go out and have been doing so more often recently than before my retirement from competitive sports. Whether I feel like dancing, going to see the latest blockbuster in the cinema or going to a concert, I can always find something to my taste in Zurich. If I want to relax, I also often leave town and visit the Zurich Unterland region. Pretty Eglisau on the Rhine, for example, offers excellent places to go for a swim and you can even go for a ride in a dragon boat with your friends. 4) Frau Gerolds Garten One of my absolute favourite restaurants! Not only its name is special (Mrs Gerold s garden); everything about it is unique. The centre of Frau Gerolds Garten is the ship container terrace with adjacent openair restaurant and a view over the rails and of the nearby Prime Tower. As an athlete, I appreciate the fresh and seasonal dishes, of course. Speaking of which, Mrs Gerold is not only a cook but also a gardener. The harvest from her urban garden, which belongs to the restaurant, frequently ends up in her dishes. 5) Sport, Sport, Sport Zurich is known as a city of sports and not by coincidence. If I wish to be a spectator for a change, I naturally feel more attracted to ice hockey than football. I support my home team EHC Bülach on a regular basis, of course; my daddy is the club president there, after all. But I also regularly go to see the ZSC Lions, who likewise play in the Hallenstadion, or the Kloten Flyers. I won t tell which team I favour, though, because I have good friends playing on both teams.
Teams of Pool B SUI, ITA, BEL, UKR/FRA From 6 through 11 September, the teams from Switzerland, Italy, Belgium and the winner from the playoff match between Ukraine and France struggle for points and victories. Switzerland (world number 109) AAs a host, Swiss Volley is automatically seeded for the EC. It is for the first time since 1971 and only for the third time ever that a Swiss women s national team participates in continental championships. On the previous occasions they participated in European Championships, the national team came in 13 th (in Turkey in 1967) and 12 th (in Italy in 1971). However, the greatest achievement in the 55 years of Swiss Volley s history was at the prestigious Montreux Volley Masters in 1993, where the Swiss women beat Olympic silver medallist Russia with 3:1 and only lost by a narrow margin against the Olympic champions from Cuba in the semi-finals. In order for the current national team to be able to deliver another brilliant performance at the Euro 2013, they have been benefiting from the national team base in Zurich since 2010, where the entire squad is called together during the summer months. National coach Svetlana Ilic s team will enter the preliminary phase of the Euro as the underdog but with the support from the home crowd, we will give our very best to reach at least the Round of Sixteen, says national player Inès Granvorka self-confidently. Setter Lo Bianco and middle blocker Gioli have been crucial players for the Italian team for years. (Photograph: FIVB) Italy (world number 4, 4 th place at EC of 2011) It s still written in the stars how good the Italians will perform in the Euro The team s quality depends on which players will be among the starters for the World Champion of Over the last years, Italy always counted among the top nations thanks to players such as Eleonora Lo Bianco (setter), Francesca Piccinini (outside hitter) or Simona Gioli (middle blocker). They were supposed to top it all in London in 2012, but a surprising 1:3 defeat against South Korea in the quarterfinals put an end to all dreams of an Olympic medal. It might also have marked the end of an era: since the sensational gold medal at the 2002 World Championship in Germany, the Italians won numerous medals and titles such as gold at the European Championships of 2007 and In the Olympic Games of 2012, Italy ranked 5 th and therefore was the best-ranked European team together with Russia. Swiss national coach Svetlana Ilic says about the Italians: Italy has a broad squad with many strong players with international experience. Based on their recent results in major tournaments, Italy is the clear favourite not only in Pool B but also running for the title of European Champion. The Italians will be an interesting opponent for Switzerland, but probably also quite out of their league. In any event, there is a new boss at the head of the Italian team: the former junior women team coach Marco Mecarelli replaces Massimo Barbolini, who is now responsible for Turkey. Belgium (world number 37) The Belgian association s intensive promotion of young talents has borne fruit also for the women s national team. They missed the finals of the Euro 2011, but before that they achieved respectable results with eleventh (2009) and seventh place (2007) at their home Euro especially considering the size of this small country. The Belgians are great volleyball enthusiasts and were therefore ecstatic when their team qualified for the European Championship thanks to the decisive 3:0 victory against France, which was mandatory for them because the first qualifying match ended with 1:3 in favour of the French. The brain of the team is setter Frauke Dirickx, who is currently under contract to the Polish Champions League side Dabrowa Gornicza. For Svetlana Ilic, who used to be a player and then assistant coach of the national team in Belgium, this will be as special duel: The team consists of a generation of young players who continuously grew closer to each other since their great performance at the Euro They have been working at this success for a total of 15 years. Most of the team members are nowadays working as professional players abroad. Belgium thus serves as an example for Switzerland, showing us how professional volleyball could become reality here, too, even though their national league is not particularly strong. I am very much looking forward to this game since I have been part of the Belgium project for some years and accompanied many of these players myself. Winner from Ukraine vs. France (world numbers 50 and 41) The outcome of the final playoff match between Ukraine and France in early June seems completely open. For Svetlana Ilic, Ukraine is the great unknown factor: It is not yet clear with which team Ukraine will enter the last qualifying round and, ideally, the final round. Apparently, the players are not greatly interested in the national team at this moment. However, if the association manages to draw all the top players, Ukraine will be very tough to beat, both for France and for us. France came after Belgium only because they scored fewer sets than their opponents in the qualifying round. For Svetlana Ilic, they would be the preferred opponent: The French team has no great stars, but a strong collective and a broad squad. They play a fast game and have very good middle blockers. They slightly lack penetrating power on the outside and opposite hitter positions, though. I d say the French women are most likely within our reach.

Follow us on Facebook! News to two years and Marichev has a clear idea about his work: My main job will consists of changing our game. Everyone knows it and everybody has adapted to it. Our current style is based on our tall players but we have to adjust it because Ekaterina Gamova is not available for the team. We have to play faster, form a block of three. The girls have to change their mentality. Turkey Turkey the EC all-time favourite has a new coach. In the future, Massimo Barbolini is going to be responsible for the third ranked team of the 2011 EC. The 49-year old Italian was the national coach of the Italian women from 2006 till 2012 and won with them, among others, two times each the EC title (2007 and 2009) as well as the World Cup (2007 and 2011). At the moment Barbolini is the coach of the Turkish top club Galatasaray Istanbul, which he will continue to look after. In addition, Barbolini, who has received a four-year contract, supervises the work and development of the junior and youth national teams. Opposite hitter Mandy Wigger (# 11) has recovered from her knee injury and is ready for the EC at home. (Photograph: m-press) Teams Switzerland The Swiss national player Mandy Wigger, who was out of action last summer due to a severe knee injury (cruciate ligament rupture), is now fully recovered. Wigger has already started gathering plenty of competition experience in the club team of Volley Köniz and will re-join the national team in spring. Joana Winter, on the other hand, once again had to undergo arthroscopic surgery on the left knee in February. The opposite hitter should have regained her old state of fitness by the start of the preparations to the EC in May, though. Inès Granvorka and Laura Unternährer will definitely continue their career as professional players after the Euro 2013 and will therefore bring some continuity to the national team. The two outside hitters have recently extended their contracts with the Champions League side Volero Zürich by two and three years, respectively. Russia Russia also has a new person responsible for the European Championship: Yuriy Marichev has been introduced as the successor of Sergei Ovchinnikov, who died shortly after the Olympic Games. At the moment Marchiev (52 years) is still coach of the men s club Dinamo Krasnodar but has already trained the women of his club for a one match period. The contract is effective up The Italian Massimo Barbolini (right) is to lead the Turkish women to the top, according to the wishes of the president of the association, Özkan Mutlugil (left). 8 News Events World Record Attempt At the EC, 36 matches will be played, supplying best entertainment at a high level for about 72 hours. Ten persons who are crazy about volleyball are going to indulge their passion by playing 89 (!) hours at a time from 3 to 7 April in order to set a world record which is officially titled as the Longest Indoor Volleyball Marathon Match and to become part of the Guinness Book of Records. 20 opponents have been looked for and found. The last team will be provided by the EC organisers since this event will also be a useful promotional platform. All information about the World Record Attempt is available at Montreux Volley Masters It is Switzerland against the world s top ten at the 2013 Montreux Volley Masters. The list of competing teams is complete three months from the start of the 28 th edition of this tournament. After a break of one year, the world s most attractive invitational tournament is back in splendid form. No less than seven of the top ten teams of the FIVB world ranking are coming together at the picturesque Riviera of Lake Geneva from 28 May to 2 June 2013 for the comeback of the Swiss team, which has been invited for the first time since The young Swiss national players have earned their ticket to this traditional topclass tournament in Montreux with hard work and great commitment. About three months before the European Championship in their own country, this meeting of the world s best teams is a welcome preparation and serves as a kind of final rehearsal for September, when they will play for keeps. The same goes for Germany, who Ten out of these twelve women and men intend to set a new world record in continuous volleyball playing. (Photograph: 89hvolleyball.de) European League The 2013 European League has a top class cast as at least five if not six teams are going to also participate in the European Championship. Top favourites for the participation in the final tournament in Bulgaria are the EC third-ranked Turkey, European Champion Serbia and Vice-European Champion Germany. Bulgaria as the host is seeded and Belgium takes part, too. Rumania, which will compete against the Czech Republic in the EC playoffs in June, might be a further EC participant taking part in the European League. It is played from 13 June to 12 July and the teams are divided as follows. Preliminary Pool A: Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania, Turkey Preliminary Pool B: Belgium, Germany, Israel, Serbia In Montreux, the Swiss players and coach Svetlana Ilic have the chance to compete against the world s best teams for the first time since (Photograph: m-press) have been an integral part of the high-class field of competitors in Montreux for years. Moreover, the organisers of the tournament pulled off a very delightful coup by securing Brazil s participation. The Olympic champions of Peking in 2008 and London in 2012 are probably today s most interesting women s team in the world. The following European teams are going to take part in the 2013 Montreux Volley Masters: Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Russia. More information about the tournament at:
Interview with Christoph Stern (President of Swiss Volley) Christoph Stern is expecting a positive and lasting effect for Swiss volleyball from the Euro (Photograph: VONOC) Christoph Stern has been responsible for the welfare of Swiss Volley since As a former NLA player and long-time international referee, he is looking forward to the absolute highlight of his term of office, the 2013 Volleyball European Championship Women, which is jointly organised by Swiss Volley and the German Volleyball Association (DVV). Christoph Stern, in less than 200 days, the starting whistle will be blown for the first EC matches. How excited are you? Christoph Stern: From an official perspective, the excitement is certainly great. We are, of course, eager to see what lies ahead of us and, in particular, how our national team will perform. On the other hand, I am also very curious to see how the broad public will perceive the EC. Can you tell whether some kind of EC wind has come up in Switzerland, yet? I d say the euphoria is still a bit restrained at the moment; after all, it is probably a bit early for a stiff EC breeze. I am confident, though, that this will change significantly until the start of the EC. The local organising committee with project supervisor Reto Hähnlein is doing a great job to spread the word of the European Championship everywhere. This is the first time in the 55 years of Swiss Volley s history that an indoor elite European Championship is hosted in Switzerland. How important do you think the EC will be for Swiss volleyball? From a historical point of view, the women s EC is, of course, a fantastic happening. I am proud that, after the Beach Volleyball World Championship in 2007, we can now offer volleyball fans an absolute highlight in indoor volleyball, too. But the European Championship is a milestone also from an athletic perspective. We finally get another chance to compete with the best. What effect do you expect the EC to have on Swiss volleyball? The Euro 2013 can have a great influence on the development of the game of volleyball in Switzerland. A lot has already been happening in the women s sector since we were awarded the organisation. Hosting the EC in our own country is a great chance to draw the attention of the media, politicians and sponsors to our sport. Of course I hope that we can trigger a boom for indoor volleyball thanks to the EC. From an athletic perspective, Switzerland is competing as a total underdog. What do you expect from your team? That they fight until they are ready to drop and that they give the opponents a proper run for their money even if they seem superior! Secretly, I am hoping for a surprise or two, of course. The Swiss women can achieve a lot with the support from the home crowd in the hopefully sold-out Hallenstadion and with bit of luck during the competition. How do you judge the balance of strength in Pool B? IItaly certainly is the top favourite and hopefully also a spectator magnet. Belgium and France or Ukraine, however, are not leagues ahead of us in terms of strength, even though they are clearly better ranked in the world ranking than Switzerland. Lady Luck definitely smiled on us during the draw (chuckles). >>
Interview with Christoph Stern (President of Swiss Volley) Why was the Hallenstadion in Zurich chosen as the venue for the matches in Switzerland? Of all Swiss stadiums only the Hallenstadion and the St. Jakobshalle in Basel fulfil the strict standards set by the CEV for European Championships. The fact that Zurich showed a strong interest for the EC from the beginning and also promised a considerable financial contribution spoke in favour of the Hallenstadion. Furthermore, the St. Jakobshalle is being rebuilt. At the time of the decision, there was no guarantee that the hall would even be available for the EC. But 5,500 spectators per day is a very ambitious goal for Swiss standards, isn t it? Yes, it is a quite an ambitious goal to fill the Hallenstadion for five consecutive days, but I also see the EC as a situation analysis to find out how greatly the grassroots sector is interested in topclass sport. Since it is the first time and probably also the last time for a long time that matches of an indoor EC are hosted in Switzerland, I expect that volleyball and sport fans will seize this unique opportunity. And, of course, we are also hoping for plenty of fans from neighbouring countries since, with Italy and possibly France, there will be two of our neighbours playing in Zurich, after all. Is Switzerland really a volleyball nation? Absolutely! According to a study called Sport Schweiz 2008 (sport Switzerland 2008), there are about 190,000 active volleyball players in Switzerland, 33,000 of which are members of Swiss Volley. Only football is more prevalent. But the question is: will these active volleyball players come to see the games as spectators. Swiss Volley is organising the Euro 2013 together with the DVV. Would it not have been possible to do it alone? Such a course would already have failed due to the lack of hall infrastructure. On the contrary, we are very lucky that we were able to get the DVV as our partner thanks to our long-standing friendly relationship. Germany is a first-class actor on the European volleyball stage and would easily have been able to pull this off single-handedly. That is why I am all the more pleased that we have managed to form this partnership. Our colleagues from Denmark and Poland are applying the same model for the organisation of the 2013 European Championship Men, for that matter. How is the transnational collaboration shaping up? The collaboration works extremely well on a strong partnershipbasis. It certainly helps that there are no language barriers. Naturally, we can profit in various areas from the DVV s great experience as organiser of European and World Championships. Our advantage is that we have already started with the preparations almost two years ago and were thus able to line up many things in advance, which is also to their benefit now. Can you imagine Switzerland becoming the venue for another indoor EC in the foreseeable future? I certainly hope so! But surely not today, nor tomorrow. It would, of course, be great if we could also host an EC for the men sometime, but for that we would again need a suitable partner. Last question: what would you wish for if you had one wish for the Euro 2013? That the Swiss win a game in the sold-out Hallenstadion Zürich! A great moment for Swiss volleyball: Christoph Stern (left) and the president of the DVV at the time, Werner von Moltke, sign the agreement for the jointly organised Euro 2013 back in (Photograph: Conny Kurth)
