Introduction The present set of rules should serve as a first insight into the rules of volleyball. It is important to question these rules didactically before introducing them at school. Which rules are introduced at school depends on the grade, the performance level of the pupils, as well as the goal the teacher has in mind for the class. Game format Court dimensions Illus. 1: Court overview Net and posts The net is placed vertically over the centre line at the height of 2,43 m for men and 2,24 m for women. The posts supporting the net are placed at a distance of 0,50-1,00 m outside the sidelines. They are 2,55 m high and preferably adjustable. Ball The volleyballs circumference is cm and its weight is g. Illus. 2: Volleyball Page 3

Teams Each team consists of six active players on the field. Every time a team receives a serve after winning a rally that team must rotate clockwise once. The three players along the net are front-row players (4,3,2). The other three are back-row players (5,6,1). Illus. 3: Line-up and rotational order The game Game situations A team scores a point by successfully grounding the ball on the opponent's court, when the opposing team commits a fault and when the opposing team receives a penalty. Illus.4: Touching the line The ball is out when...it touches an object outside the court...it touches a person out of play...it touches the posts it touches the ceiling it touches the antennae it touches the net outside the side bands Scoring Point Set Match The ball is successfully grounded on the opponent's court The opposing team commits a fault The opposing team receives a penalty A set is won by the team which first scores 25 points with a minimum lead of two points. The match is won by the team that wins 2 of 3 sets or 3 of 5 sets In a best of 3 match, the deciding set is played to 15 points with a minimum lead of 2 points Page 4

Positioning When the ball is hit by the server, each team must be positioned within its own court in its rotational order. Each back-row player must be positioned further back from the centre line than the corresponding front-row player. Each left side player (4+5) or right side player (1+2) must have at least a part of his/her foot closer to the left (right) sideline than the feet of the centre player (3+6) in that row. After the service hit, the players may move around and occupy any position on their court and the free zone. A positional fault is sanctioned with a point for the opposing team. Playing the ball In addition to blocking, which is not a hit, a team is entitled to a maximum of three hits to return the ball to the opponent's court. A hit is any contact with the ball by a player in play even if unintentional. Thereby, the ball can be hit with any part of the body. However, it is prohibited to catch or throw the ball. The ball may touch various parts of the body if this happens simultaneously. The ball may not be hit by the same player twice in succession. Exceptions apply for the block, after which two successive contacts of one player are permitted. Faults in playing the ball A team hits the ball four times before returning it A player takes support from a team-mate or any structure/object in order to hit the ball The ball is caught and/or thrown A player hits the ball twice in succession or the ball contacts various parts of the body in succession Ball at the net The ball sent to the opponent's court must go over the net within the crossing space. The crossing space is the part of the vertical plane of the net limited at the bottom by the top of the net, at the sides by the antennae and their imaginary extensions and above by the ceiling. While crossing the net the ball may touch it. A ball driven into the net may be recovered within the limitation of the three contacts rule Page 5

Player at the net In blocking, a player may touch the ball beyond the net, provided that he/she does not interfere with the opponent's play before or during the latter's attack hit. After an attack hit, a player is permitted to pass his/her hand beyond the net, provided that the contact has been made within his/ her own playing space. It is permitted to penetrate into the opponent's space under the net, provided that this does not interfere with the opponent's play. This includes the opponents court. Illus. 5: Crossing the centre line Contact with the net between the antennae by a player who is participating in an action is a fault. Players may touch the post, ropes, or any other object outside the antennae, including the net itself, provided that it does not interfere with the play. Illus. 6: Mistake - Touching the net Service Which team executes the first service of the first set, as well as that of the deciding set (the 3rd or 5th) is determined by a toss. The other sets will be started with the service of the team that did not serve first in the previous set. The players must follow the service order recorded on the lineup sheet. The ball shall be hit with one hand or any part of the arm after being tossed or released from the hand(s). Before and during the service hit or take-off for a jump service, the server must not touch the court (the end line included) or the floor outside the service zone. If the serving team wins the rally, the player who served before, serves again. If the receiving team wins the rally they must rotate. The player moving from the front-right position to the back-right position will serve. Illus. 7: Mistake - Touching the court Page 6

Attack hit All actions which direct the ball towards the opponents, except for the service and block, are considered attack hits. A front-row player may perform an attack hit from anywhere, whereas a back-row player may not perform an attack hit from within the front zone. In the front zone an attack hit is only allowed if contact with the ball has been made within the player's own playing space (see 'Player at the net'). No player is permitted to perform an attack hit on the opponent's service as long as the ball is in the front zone and above the net. Block Blocking is the act of trying to intercept the ball coming from the opponent by reaching over the top of the net. Only front-row players are permitted to block. After a block a team is entitled to three hits to return the ball. Simultaneous contact with the ball by several blockers may occur, provided that the contacts are made during one action. The first hit after the block may be executed by a player who has touched the ball during the block. In blocking, the player may place his/her hands and arms beyond the net provided that this action does not interfere with the opponent's play. Illus. 8: Block at the net Page 7
