5 MISSION I The International Fistball Association (IFA) is a dynamic, modern and efficient sports association which, together with its member associations, stands for the following values and objectives: We provide everything that is required for our competitions to be held in an ideal manner and with high quality. We promote and develop the sport throughout the world by offering a broad and specific spectrum. We offer training programmes for the lasting development of players, trainers, referees and officials. We are committed to level-appropriate, open and professional communication both internally and externally. We generate and enhance people's awareness of the sport of fistball through appropriate measures and collaboration in the fields of sport, politics, business and the media.

6 MISSION II We support collaboration with international institutions such as the International Olympic Committee (IOC), SportAccord, the International World Games Association (IGWA), the International University Sports Federation (FISU), the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and other associations and develop these partnerships with constructive dialogue. 8 HISTORY When exactly the game of fistball was invented, is not known. What is certain, however, is that the roots lie in the southern part of Europe, perhaps in Italy. The earliest known written mention of the game is by Roman Emperor Gordian III and dates to the year 240. Rules for an Italian version of fistball were recorded by Antonius Scaiono in In the 16th century the game experienced a renaissance. However, it was seen less as a game of competitive nature and more as a pastime for nobles and gentry. In 1786, Johann Wolfgang Goethe mentioned fistball games between four noblemen from Verona and four Venetians in his diary An Italian Journey. It was only in 1870 that fistball was introduced to Germany, led by Georg Weber. The sport was mainly played by gymnasts and was soon seen as a gymnastic sport. During this time the sport spread to the surrounding, mainly Germanspeaking, neighboring countries, and German emigrants also spread the sport in all continents, particularly in North- and South America and West Africa. Today fistball is played on all continents.
