Wake Forest senior outside hitter Kylie Long was named the tournament s MVP The Deacs traveled west to Colorado last weekend and went 1-2 in the Omni Invitational. Kylie Long and Caitlyn Della were named to the Omni Invitational All-Tournament Team SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS William & Mary has recorded a 2-5 record early in 2017, after going 8-21 in The Tribe are under the direction of second-year coach Melissa Ferris. USC Upstate is off to a 2-4 start to 2017, but has won two straight matches after dropping their first four. UMES is 5-2 in its first seven matches of the season. The Hawks have won four straight matches and just took home the championship of the St. Francis Brooklyn Terrier Invitational. Junior Lucia Babic was named the tournament s MVP. LOOKING AHEAD The Deacs will head north to take part in the Penn State Classic next Friday and Saturday, Sept in University Park, Pa. The Deacs will play three matches, starting Friday, Sept. 15, at 5 p.m. against Ohio. She is one of 12 Demon Deacons to record over 1,000 digs, a milestone she recorded her sophomore season. Wolf aso ranks third in program history with 4.36 digs per set. Senior outside hitter Kylie Long is currently eighth all-time in career kills, with 1,213. Only 10 Demon Deacons have ever recorded over 1,000 career kills. Long is eighth in team history with 3.13 kills per set. Last season, Long s 447 kills were fifth on the all-time Demon Deacon list for most kills in a single season. Her 1,302 attack attempts rank second. ACC LEADERS Demon Deacon players found themsleves near the top of the ACC in a number of statistical categories a year ago. Kylie Long finished 2016 fifth in the ACC with her 447 kills. In her freshman campaign, Caroline Rassenfoss was ninth in the ACC with 420 kills. In her first season with the Deacs, Bailey Shurbet ranked sixth in the conference with 9.84 assists per set. Libero Caroline Wolf s 4.21 digs per set placed her seventh in the ACC. Both Long and Rassenfoss finished 2016 inside the top 10 in the league in points per set. Long ranked fifth with 3.98, while Rassenfoss placed ninth with HOME AWAY FROM HOME For the second season in a row, Wake Forest volleyball will be away from Reynolds Gymnasium, as the team s usual home continues to undergo massive renovations.. After splitting up their home dates between the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum and The Summit School last season, this season the Demon Deacons will play all of their home matches at the LJVM Coliseum. HEAD COACH BILL FERGUSON Bill Ferguson begins his second season as head coach of the Demon Deacon program. Ferguson joined the Demon Deacons after a year as the women s volleyball assistant coach at Cal State-Los Angeles. He was also a TV analyst on volleyball broadcasts in the ACC, Big 12 and Conference USA. In his first year with the team, Ferguson led the team to five ACC wins and nine wins overall. He also helped Caitlyn Della and Caroline Rassenfoss to the All-ACC Freshman Team. Off the court, Rassenfoss and Kylie Long were named to the All-ACC Academic Team. From 2005 to 2015 Ferguson served as the head men s volleyball coach at the University of Southern California, compiling a record of He led the Trojans to three NCAA volleyball Final Fours and a pair of runner-up finishes in 2009 and He was named the American Volleyball Coaches Association National Coach of the Year in 2009 and Ferguson s teams won two Mountain Pacific Sports Federation regular season titles and one MPSF Tournament championship. He coached a pair of National Players of the Year in Murphy Troy and Tony Ciarelli. A founding director of the Southern California Volleyball Club, Ferguson has an extensive club volleyball coaching resume. As a club coach, Ferguson has coached boys and girls and men s open club teams to 13 USA Volleyball gold medals and has won more boys club championships than any other coach in the country. His boys club teams reached the USA Junior National Volleyball Championships for five straight years from Ferguson began his coaching career in 1991 at the club level and won multiple national championships.
