1 USA Volleyball THEORETICAL EXAM Form D USA Volleyball (USAV) develops exams in coordination with PAVO that are specific to each rules code. However, the Form D exam is utilized only by USA Volleyball for 14 and under junior players for training and educational purposes. This is the USAV Form D examination for 14 and under junior players. Exam Instructions and Information: Read each question completely and write your answer to each question on the attached answer sheet using the current rules from the USA Volleyball Domestic Competition Regulations (DCR). Any USAV shaded boxes in the DCR take priority over the same FIVB rule (non-shaded), and the USAV rule should be used when answering each question. Important referee techniques and points of emphasis are also included in the DCR under the Techniques, Mechanics & Procedures section starting on page 95, the Basic Procedures for Conducting a USAV Match section starting on page 195, and both sections can be used in these examination questions. The following points are important unless other conditions are noted: No sanctions (team or individual) have been assessed other than those specifically described in the question. Requests for interruptions (timeouts, substitutions) or lineup checks have not been acknowledged (whistled) by the referees. Decide whether the statement is true (T) or false (F). Write either T or F in the space provided on the answer sheet. Assume no other special rules exist except those stated in the question. 1. Touching the net mesh during the action of playing the ball, as seen below, is illegal. 2. All time-outs requested by either team last 60 seconds. 3. The height of the net will be different for 12 and under play, than it is for 13- and 14-year old play. 4. After setting the ball, player R4 begins to move to another position on the court, but brushes the bottom of the net with an elbow. This should be whistled a net fault. 5. A Libero in the front zone makes a team s third hit. The ball is contacted below the top of the net, and goes onto the floor of the opponent s court. This is not legal. 6. A volleyball tournament match is won by the team that wins two out of three sets. 7. In the picture below #9 in the purple jersey is the second referee. She has moved to the blocker s side of the net to see the blocking action of the team with the white jersey. To be on the blocker s side of the net during play is the correct position. Page 3 of 5

4 8. Jersey numbers must be clearly contrasting and centered on the chest and upper back. 9. The head coach may stand and instruct the team during the match, as long as they are at least 5 10 from the sideline. 10. Line-ups must be turned in at least two minutes before the end of the warm-up period, and at least 30 seconds before the end of the time between sets. 11. As the picture shows below, the player on the right side of the court in the red jersey has made a play near the center line. The position of her foot over the center line would require the referees to call a center line fault because of safety concerns. 12. All sanctions remain in force for the entire match. 13. The Libero, who is standing at the net, jumps and reaches above the top of the net to block the ball, but does not touch the ball. This play is legal and play continues. 14. The head coach must sit in the chair or on the bench closest to the Scorer table. 15. The Libero may not be the game captain. 16. In the picture below, the scorer is giving the correct signal to the second referee at the end of a regular game interruption (like a time out). Page 4 of 5

Before each match begins, the warm-ups will include two minutes for ball handling for both teams on their side of the court, then four minutes for the serving team on the entire court, and then four minutes for the receiving team on the entire court. 18. In every match, the teams have the right to assign up to two defensive players called Liberos on the line-up sheet. 19. For 14 and under competition, a player has five seconds to contact the serve during the first attempt as seen below. 20. During service, a player does not have to release the ball from their hand(s) before contacting the serve with one hand or arm. 21. When playing on SportCourt at tournaments, all substitutes may sit on their team bench or stand off the court in their warm-up area at the end of the bench. 22. Each team is allowed 12 substitutions per set. 23. The Libero uniforms do not have to clearly differ (contrast) in color with the team player s uniforms. 24. A team must have six players to play at any time. 25. Whenever one team requests multiple substitutions, the substitutes shall enter the substitution zone all at once to be authorized to enter the match by the second referee. Page 5 of 5
